Scout Notes – Gameweek 17 – Monday

Santi Cazorla runs riot with a hat-trick and assist as Arsenal hit Reading for five. Theo Walcott celebrates his first start up front with a goal, and Lukas Podolski produces his biggest haul for the season as Reading’s defensive disasters show little sign of abating…

Cazorla Delivers a Masterclass
With just a single assist in his previous four, Santi Cazorla had somewhat stuttered heading into last night’s match but the former Malaga man unleashed a devastating display against Reading as the visitors recovered from their shock cup exit at Bradford. Three goals and an assist earned the Spaniard a 23 point haul and, with maximum bonus included, he’s sitting on 105 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – second only to Michu for midfielders and joint third overall, with Robin Van Persie the only other player to better his score. Yesterday’s news that Marouane Fellaini is set to be banned for the next three will see plenty Fantasy managers shopping for a new midfielder and Cazorla’s brilliance is surely set to see his 21% ownership rise further. With a strong set of fixtures to follow (wig, WHM, NEW, sou) the potential for points looks particularly enticing – with Wigan having shipped at least two goals in each of their last seven, the bandwagon looks likely to be in overdrive before Saturday’s deadline, though the Gunners are expected to announce later today whether their Boxing Day match with West Ham will go ahead in light of the tube strike – a postponement would make many think twice over Arsenal’s assets in the short-term.

Theo Up Front
He’s made no secret of his desire to move to a central role and last night Theo Walcott finally got his wish. Having recovered from a calf injury, Walcott propelled himself onto Fantasy radars by bagging the Gunners’ fifth in a rout at the Madejski and, at 8.5 in FPL, offers a possible option to Fellaini owners who can’t quite afford premium priced options such as Cazorla. Walcott’s pace up top could well prove beneficial to the likes of Cazorla, forcing opposition defences to drop deeper, thus allowing more space for the Gunners midfield to operate in further up the park. Certainly, it’s an alternative to the more laborious Olivier Giroud – the Frenchman had started nine of the last 10 but has produced just four goals and an assist over 1098 minutes so far; Walcott, by comparison, has returned five goals and four assists in just 686 minutes. On last night’s showing (and with Walcott still yet to pen a new deal) it seems highly likely that Wenger will keep things as they are next Saturday lunchtime. Wenger had this to say on Walcott’s showing, post-match…

“If you look at my statements two years ago, I said he will play in the middle. I think slowly it became his idea as well. I felt it was a good opportunity to do it tonight. On what I’ve seen in training, I thought he was ready to do it…I made my decision to play Theo through the middle based on training. He has shown ability in that position, the timing of his movements, and for his first game he did very well. The signs are very encouraging with Theo.”

When questioned whether Walcott would remain in the striker’s role, however, he remained suitably vague…

“I don’t know yet. It’s too early to say that just after the game.”

Podolski in the Points
While Cazorla stole the show and Walcott’s out of position prospects also caught the attention of Fantasy managers, Lukas Podolski helped himself to a 14 point haul against the Royals. The German international seems to have benefitted from a recent couple of first-team omissions –Wenger had left Podolski out the starting line-up in two of the previous three due to concerns over fatigue and his decision was entirely vindicated last night as the former Cologne man grabbed a goal and pair of assists, his best return of the season. With five goals and five assists, 8.2 priced Podolski has now moved up to 74 FPL points pre-bonus – that’s only three less than the likes of Steven Fletcher, for example, and with the festive schedule smiling kindly, he could well be set to continue his climb up the rankings.

Royals Defensive Woes
Brian McDermott may be reassessing his decision to continue with a 4-4-2 after last night’s home hammering. The Reading manager’s decision to draft in Kaspars Gorkss made little difference as Arsenal romped into a three-goal lead before the break, though a move to 4-5-1 after the interval allowed the hosts to salvage some pride and gives McDermott food for thought heading into Saturday’s visit to the Etihad. Having shipped 12 goals in their last four, the Royals’ dire defence looks set to persuade plenty Fantasy managers to draft in City’s attacking assets, with the champions seemingly set for a prosperous upcoming weekend. Post-match, McDermott was in a determined mood and left us with no doubt that he’s targeting defensive improvement…

“We’ve played Man Utd and scored three, we’ve got another two tonight, three against Fulham, we’re scoring goals so it’s obvious where we need to sort out our team. It’s another game with seven goals at Madejski Stadium and we want those goals to be in our favour.”

Whether he can achieve results ahead of the trip to City is another matter. Roberto Mancini’s side will be looking to boost their goals for column having struggled to reach the heights of last season in this area. For Fantasy managers, the trick is anticipating which City players will get the opportunity to take part in a potential duck shoot against the Royals.

Cazorla knee jerky? I mean Reading played terrible, is he justifiable because of one game against a sub par defence?

bringing him in is possibly a touch knee jerky but if bale is out and mata plays full game tonight it doesn't leave alot of options at that price.

I was waiting for Bale to drop so I could do Fellaini>Bale but Fellaini was the one who dropped, should I wait for Bale to drop or just do the transfer? Here are some other options.

    A) Fellaini > Bale
    B) Fellaini > Mata
    C) Fellaini > Taarabt (Rotates well with Sterling)
    D) ?

2.5 In the bank 1 Free transfer.

Ok guys, who is with me?

Ba out (QPR, Man Utd, Arsenal, EVERTON)

Dzeko in (READING, Sunderland, Norwich, STOKE)

Those 4 games are with 12 days, chances are Ba will play them all, but surely he will get tired.

Dzeko is third choice striker at the minute, but he will certainly play over this period & there is a decent chance that he could start against Reading.

Surely it is worth a gamble until the WC?

Don't like a sure starter, Ba, out while at home to QPR for a big doubt to start, Dzeko.

It could be a glorious punt, Rohnny, or it could be utterly horrendous. (Ba double figures, Dzeko getting a 10-15 minute run out). Big gamble.

I need to improve my miserable defence:
Begovic / Etheridge (doesn't play, so esentially I have 1 keeper, but will sort out with WC)

    Gorkss, Shorey, Garrido, Baines, Cuellar

So 1 of the 2 Reading plyers has to go and will beef up with either GJohnson, Zabeleta or GJohnson to add some weight in short term and then in WC week decide if Baines stays or goes to free up funds and bring i in the likes of Clark to give me 1 big hitter and 4 cheap to mid price Defence.

Your midfield is too packed. Ditch Hazard for a Puncheon and upgrade Berba to RVP.

Next week though obviously because you can save a transfer and the Fellaini suspension

lost at bottom of last page

I have 2ft this week am thinking of doing 3(-4pt)

fellaini, sess and suarez > cazorla, yaya and tevez

i know alot of you wouldnt transfer out suarez but think tevez will easily outscore this week and i’m fed up with suarez, he’s got me 6points in the last 5weeks, anyway it’ll leave me with

    bego jussi
    enrique nastasic cameron davies shorey
    mata cazorla yaya michu sterling
    rvp ba tevez

    opinions please

Just watch City scrape a narrow win. It will be textbook.

I'm expecting as much, brought in Yaya for the sake of it but not going to go City mad.

Gorkss wont play as other CB's will be fit.

Karacan or Guthrie will partner Leigertwood instead of Tabb solidifying the midfield.

      Kebe will not start.

Although Cummings will still be playing RB so you never know.

This means nothing to me. I know nothing about the quality of Reading players.

Essentially its a massive upgrade, albeit from league two quality players to league one quality.

Also dont you have a suspicion that they might be very defensive against City

For sure. They will be away from home aswell so you'd think 'they'll park the bus.'

Save it. Then the following GW, with your 2FT, downgrade Sess and get Rooney for Suarez.

Alot of posts today about people dismantling their sides to get City forwards, which has snowballed after last nights game.

This is very risky imo. Rotation and the sharing of points is rife in the Citeh forward line.

Also, you could end up with a forward who'll not play 3 days later.

Get one forward for sure, but think about the next 3 games too.

Out of the Manchester FWDs, who won't get rotated though?

      Probably only Roonpig.

True. But if you already have RVP, you wouldn't sell him for the risk of missing one game. Taking hits to bring in Citeh forwards who will only frustrate you over Xmas is asking for trouble.

If you have Suarez, Berbatov, Ba, etc, they will play all the games during this time. With Citeh you know Mancini will rotate.

    Guys and gals,
Am I the only one considering playing their wildcards this gw???

    Bunn - Sczenzy
    Shorey - Demel - Clyne - Davies - Nelsen
    Mata - Silva - Cazorla - Michu - Puncheon
    RVP - Aguero - Tevez

Yes it is top heavy, yes I am banking on City to whitewash Reading, but subsequent transfers can change this...

    Opinions?

I know planning is a dangerous game, but how does this look?

    GW18 - Fellani > Bale/Cazorla (depending on Arsenal game and/or Bale fitness)
    GW19 - Fletcher & Sterling> Berbatov & Sidwell

ok as an Ageuro non owner and one who is shittting himself. iv come up with some logic to why he might not play lol.

tevez and dzeko have been rested alot in last month or so. ageuro has played every game Bar everton at home.

reading are pissss poor and mancini must know that. perfect time to rest his key striker before a tough trip to sunderland and norwich.

reading will definitely play 4-5-1 after last night and try to just keep it tight without attacking.

reading have been shipping goals due to crosses from their right side. man city play with little width and even if they are caught out from this again its silva who plays left wing role so il get points there.

    thoughts????????????????????
