Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 30

You can only play what’s in front of you and, with that in mind, our updated Watchlist rankings consider only the next four Gameweeks with a couple of double fixtures confirmed in Gameweek 33. Arsenal’s assets are promoted with two fixtures looming and, while Robin Van Persie comes back into the frame ahead of a home clash with Reading, even the heralded Dutchman struggles to displace Golden Boot rival, Luis Suarez.

Goalkeepers

Once again the goalkeeper situation is a cause for consternation. Recent injuries to Pepe Reina, Julio Cesar and Tim Krul continue to produce uncertainty in this position, while John Ruddy’s injury progress now threatens Mark Bunn’s security of starts – or at least we’re led to believe it will in a fortnight’s time.

Such events cut our options and, with both Petr Cech and David De Gea offering seemingly secure routes into heavy-hitting defences, it’s those two which currently look the best options as new acquisitions between the sticks.

Home matches with West Ham and Sunderland, plus a trip to Southampton, offers some promise of returns for Cech, while De Gea’s form seems to have assured him starts in a United defence that has impressed with a recent run of clean sheets. There is just the suggestion that Anders Lindegaard could be given an opportunity to earn the two league appearances required for a title winners medal but, presumably, this will not be a factor until the closing few Gameweeks if/when that prize is secured.

Below these two, Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny has decent fixtures, including the confirmed Gameweek 33 double, although his prospects are somewhat dented by Arsene Wenger’s decision to rest the Pole for tonight’s visit to Bayern for the second leg of the Champions League tie. Compatriot Lukas Fabianski will get the opportunity to impress, although it’s expected that Szczesny will be restored at the Liberty Stadium at the weekend.

QPR’s Julio Cesar is still a doubt for the trip to Villa but, presuming he’s available, the Brazilian remains a worthy consideration as cover of a Rangers defence with strong fixtures and the motivation to earn results. Mark Bunn’s stock takes a hit with Ruddy now close to contesting a start in the Norwich goal, although in the short-term, Bunn should be clear for selection at Sunderland and Wigan of the back of a run of three clean sheets in five.

Villa’s Brad Guzan and Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi have the fixtures to warrant some attention, although their potential points are perhaps based on saves rather than assured clean sheet returns.

Defenders

In defence, we keep Glen Johnson on top of our rankings, despite Jose Enrique’s latest assist in the win over Spurs. While the Spaniard is clearly a very strong alternative, we’re going to go on backing Johnson’s superior goal threat in the hope that he can yet justify the extra outlay.

Chelsea’s David Luiz has a slight lack of security balanced out by his potential to be shifted to a midfield role, plus his threat at direct free-kicks which could well see him profit before the season climax. Like Johnson, he has strong fixtures in his favour over the next four, although his nine bookings is a concern: one more yellow and Luiz will face a two-match ban. Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole are the safest, secure alternatives for those who don’t wish to run the Luiz gauntlet.

With Kieran Gibbs now fit to contest the left-back role, Nacho Monreal is no longer a secure option, while at right-back, Bacary Sagna is still thought to be at least a week from a return. That leaves Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker as the two Fantasy options to consider, along with Szczesny in goal. Mertesacker gets the nod from us, with Reading at the Emirates and a double in Gameweek 33 his forthcoming highlights. Sagna would seem likely to earn the mantle as the preferred option when fit.

Chris Samba and Emmerson Boyce provide some attacking potential in the mid-price for those seeking a differential and that’s enough to see them hold off the claims of Rafael for a top five spot in our rankings – for now. Mathieu Debuchy is still our route into the Newcastle rearguard, having begun to show some profit from his strong attacking intent.

Both Leighton Baines and Pablo Zabaleta have obvious appeal, for very different reasons, with the City man returning six clean sheets in the last eight league outings. The duo have testing fixtures over the next four Gameweeks, however – Zabaleta also has a blank in Gameweek 33 to dent his short-term stock.

The likes of Southampton’s Jose Fonte, Villa’s Ciaran Clark and Stoke’s Marc Wilson compete for our attentions in the budget bracket lower down the rankings.

Midfielders

Despite testing fixtures, Gareth Bale’s form has him hold in top spot, with Theo Walcott his nearest rival. The Arsenal man cannot get close to Bale’s recent scoring spurt but has the fixtures to revive his fortunes over the next four. Santi Cazorla also climbs into our top five, with some Fantasy managers considering doubling on Arsenal’s two prime attacking prospects for their forthcoming run.

Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko continues to deliver and is pushing Juan Mata for third spot. The Chelsea man has shown disappointing form of late and his security of start is always a concern – particularly with Chelsea’s FA Cup replay with United looming. Nevertheless, Mata’s fixtures are strong and he just about holds off the claims of Eden Hazard and Oscar as our recommended weapon in Rafa Benitez’s midfield. That pair remain great alternatives, however.

Swansea’s Michu takes a tumble in our rankings following a big decline in strike-rate but remains simmering just outside the top five with two home games to come. Wigan’s Shaun Maloney and Liverpool’s Stewart Downing are your options for those seeking a real differential for the fifth midfield slot. Both have the fixtures and form to deliver profit over the next four. Lower down, there’s also a tentative nod to QPR’s in-form Andros Townsend – the on-loan winger looks to have cemented a spot on the right flank and goes head-to-head with the Villa, Fulham and Wigan defences over the next three Gameweeks.

Forwards

It’s impossible to deny the form of Luis Suarez right now and, with Liverpool’s 4-2-3-1 system keeping the Uruguayan in a central attacking role, there appears to be little sign of his recent consistency dropping off. Suarez retains the top spot, with team-mate Daniel Sturridge slipping slightly down our rankings as a result.

This opens the way for Robin Van Persie to make his claim for a spot back in our top two – the Dutchman will be expected to start against Reading having been rested for the FA Cup tie last weekend and, against the weakest defence in the league, Van Persie will be heavily backed to close the gap on Suarez in the race for the Golden Boot.

Villa’s Christian Benteke continues to show strong consistency at the foot of the table and with three crucial home games in the next four, looks primed to go on delivering for Paul Lambert and his Fantasy owners alike.

Tough fixtures deny Romelu Lukaku’s claims for a higher ranking, despite continuing strong form, while QPR’s Loic Remy and Wigan’s Arouna Kone present clear options for the third striker differential – their respective schedules suggest returns over the short-term and, in both cases, the confidence is there to suggest profits will arrive for those willing to invest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

could be decent pick but i'll go for Bale

litlle annalyse and stats back Bale Heavily

even Rooney has much better stats than RVP lately

and in my opinion RVP has been overpreforming

I agree with you, Bale's form is abundant and Fulham are not too impressive, especially on the road. Bale has such an insane % involvement in the goals, setpieces and general play the last few weeks, which edges it for him above RVP for me. The 5 point goals also helps.

Here's my problem.. shipped out RvP for points last GW.. To get him back = -8. Long term, it'll leave me with:

    De Gea
    G. Johnson, Martin R, ShawX, (Mariappa, Harte)
    Michu, Walcott, Bale, Sissoko (Maloney)
    RvP, Suarez, Lukaku..

Worth the hit? Also very little DGW cover..

Good day sirs! Let's get down to brass tacks here.

    A) RVP & 5.0-ish mid (Maloney/Townsend/whatever), -4 HIT
    B) Mata & Sturridge, SAVE FT

For me it's a bit dependent on if Mata is rested or not tomorrow. No doubt RVP will do well this weekend, but with Chelsea and Liverpool's upcoming fixtures I'm doubting if it's worth it looking at the longer term.

Hey Az. Yeah, my original plan was save. Just worried it might be a season-turner if RVP finds his scoring boots again and is nailed on. Then again, I think Sturridge and Cisse (the strikers I can lose for RVP, also have Suarez) can score decently given the fixtures they have.

What would you say is the priority transfer:

    1.Mignolet -> De Gea
    2. Kebe -> Maloney/Townsend
    3. Evans -> a definite starter
    4. Lambert -> a striker costing a maximum of 7.1M

Mig to DeGea is a goody based on fixs/form.

Can't see why you'd ditch Lamby, shown that if held over time, he rewards.

I agree that DDG is an excellent choice, but Mig is playing Norwich who can't for the life of them score and Man U are playing Reading. I don't see it as a priority transfer this week, even though Man U are excellent at the moment and Sunderland are in bad form.

I am leaning towards doing taraabt to 4.5, and Lambert to RVP for 4 points.
But I could otherwise do Lambert to Rooney for free.
I will captain whichever one I get, is RVP the better bet due to being more nailed on this gw?

So OOP that he's got 2 goals and no assists all season.

He's also picked up four clean sheets all season.

Even if he's out of position he should be nowhere near No. 5 and nowhere near anyones FF team. He's ahead of Rafael FFS who has 3 goals, 5 assists and 7 clean sheets.

I'm never quite sure what to make of the watchlist, although I like how it looks on the side of the screen. I just think it doesn't really work as a watchlist when you ignore the budget options...i.e the players you really would be 'watching out for'

Examples: Enrique and Carragher for value

Value is only relevant when you can't afford the best options though I guess. Watchlist is supposed to be the best options from each team ordered by upcoming fixtures. That's how I took it anyway.

it's not only relevant when you can't afford the most expensive guy.

It's relevant because sometimes players are genuinely overpriced for what they're offering. Especially defenders...because often their success is shared...so the cheap choice can often be the best choice as it's getting you the same results but for 1m cheaper.

Agreed but I think that is the case with Wilson as a pick but Mark is saying that GJ is the best option in that he will deliver the most points from the liverpool defence due to superior attacking potenital.

Looks great, this is a week I'm jealous for Dawson owners.

I can understand your concern about Lambert, it's basically Sissoko or Lambert for bench, I'd play Michu at home versus pretty much anyone. To me it feels pretty 50/50, Wigan are playing terribly at home (see Liverpool game), I'd probably bench Lambert.

I lost by 3pts and 1pt to Aatish! Where is the rule stating that I have to be the unlickiest player in UCL history?

In the first match I had Kebe with 15pts on my bench in first spot. In the second game I had Kebe on my bench with 1pt, but heavens above he autosubbed on.

Doos is in league 3, and looking like he is gonna get relegated too. So I suspect we will get relegated and we will find a new host in one of the higher leagues.

Have the same problem, I wouldn't mind having RVP but looking at this GW and the next few there's no one I can lose, let alone two players.

    Enrique's home PPG this season - 6.6 😮
    Johnson's home PPG - 4.7

They both share the same away PPG of 3.
Enrique is in better form and also 0.5 cheaper, if you were to get them now.

Enrique got most of those points playing on the LW so aren't really that relevant. Coutinho helps vastly though, whereas Downing just thwarts GJ's attacking ventures sadly.

Many but not all. You'd have to discard those matches from the data to get a fair result though.

The only thing Johnson has that Enrique doesn't have IMO is the ability to cut inside and score screamers with his weaker foot. Not sure how much that's worth in FPL. A goal every 20 games?

But the mere fact he takes those shots, even if not scored, leads to many chances for assists from rebounds etc. He is a vastly better attacker than Enrique is, but I think Downing limits his potential somewhat.

Haha, I think you are free to make your own judgement/disagree.

My look at the GJ versus JE situation is that even though GJ has better stats, the "quality" of his attacking forays is lower than JE. JE isn't a brilliant attacker or anything, but he has a better eye for a through-ball, cross and proper finish than GJ does, even though GJ does MORE of it. If that makes any sense.

JE > GJ if I was buying now (and I own GJ).

I'm sticking with Michu this GW, and doing Michu -> Cazorla next week.

I'm not sold on Lamps nailed-on-ness now that Mikel is back in action. Ramires looked very good versus Man U in the weekend, and Benitez might opt for Mikel/Luiz + Ramires in the middle in order to utilize Ramires in a more attacking role than he can when playing with Lamps + Ramires.

Especially worrying that he Lampard hasn't gotten a new contract either.

Hey lads, just a quick RMT (sorry, but necessary at this point)

    DDG/Bunn

    Zabs/Wilson/Clyne/Davies/Harte

    Mata/Sissoko/Walcott/Michu/Bale

    Suarez Sturridge Lukaku

What to do with this squad? Obvious move is Lukaku>RVP/Rooney, but which one? Would still have to bench one out of that stellar midfield. 1FT, 7.2 in the bank.

guys Im struggling badly over last few weeks..am happy with defence, but midfield and attack is:

    Michu – Punch – Gerrard – Bale – Walcott
    Suarez – Sturridge – Lambert

1FT and 0.5 in the bank

Clearly wanna get RVP in somehow with Suarez, Sturridge and either Walcott or Gerrard to go…getting rid of gerrard and sturridge gives me 17.7m in the bank. RVP is 13.7 leaving only 4m for a midfielder, obv not possible

so will need to make a 3 part transfer…

OR get rooney instead, along with maloney or SWP?

    Advice really welcome!

RVP is not in form and how much PL time is he guaranteed with the league won? Maybe Sturridgeand Lambert to Benteke/Mirallas/ Lukaku. Michu and Puncheon to the likes of Townsend and Fellaini.

            Blimey. Too strict! You think?

I think the new system will give us two things. One, mods can remove stuff quickly and easily and monitor user activity far better.

The flipside is, the community can vote on what they like so, in some ways, rules can be relaxed a bit because folk can sort by rating and not bother with the stuff that has been downvoted.

Lol not the new comment system. I think thats a fine idea. Im talking about now.

I feel it used to be alot more relaxed in terms of what we could talk about. Although I have only started posting after a long time out. Some things may have happend im not aware of that have led to this, as the sites gone global.
