The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

As the season heats up and the battle to beat the drop intensifies, it shouldn’t really surprise us that the most cool and collected player in the Premier League has led by example. With goals in each of the previous three Gameweeks, Dimitar Berbatov has engineered a climb up the climb that sees Fulham sit in tenth spot – just four points behind Swansea with a game in hand.

Reunited with former Spurs boss Martin Jol last summer, Berbatov’s impact was immediate. A brace on his first start against West Brom was followed by an assist away to Wigan – with maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus in both fixtures, he rocketed up in ownership from 6.9 to 7.3 over the space of a fortnight. Handed the role of lone forward, with Bryan Ruiz pulling the strings behind him, the Bulgarian’s form continued – three goals and a pair of assists over his next four appearances followed, with a 16 point haul in a Gameweek 11 draw at the Emirates proving the highlight of his season so far.

A hamstring injury to Ruiz in the Gameweek 12 defeat at home to Sunderland proved Berbatov’s undoing, though. The Costa Rican’s absence forced Jol into deploying Berbatov deeper, lessening his attacking potential, with the likes of Hugo Rodallega or Mladen Petric afforded the chance to lead the line instead. As a result, he failed to register a single goal or assist over Ruiz’s six matches on the sidelines – it’s no coincidence his strike partner’s Gameweek 19 return saw Berbatov in the points once again, picking up a goal and maximum bonus in a home draw with Southampton.

Since Ruiz’s return to the Cottagers’ first XI, Berbatov has hit the occasional stumbling block, though. This has mainly been down to his manager’s tinkering – Jol’s decision to play Ruiz on the right flank in a handful of fixtures resulted in a withdrawn role once again for the Bulgarian but, as his side edged ever-nearer to the drop zone, Jol’s decision to reinstate Ruiz behind Berbatov up top has proved pivotal.

Further analysing his recent form, Berbatov has now notched in four of his last five matches; the one game he failed to find the net – away to Norwich in Gameweek 26 – was due to Jol’s decision to move Ruiz out wide and drop the Bulgarian deeper. With Ashkan Dejagah now preferred on the flank, Fulham finally have a settled side and are reaping the benefits; only United have bettered or equalled their points haul over the last three matches.

Up next for the Cottagers is a home clash against basement-dwellers QPR and with a double Gameweek 33 affording a trip to fourth-bottom Villa and home clash against Chelsea, the prospect for points looks enticing. After that, Berbatov faces three home games in four (ARS, REA, LIV) and with such a kindly FPL price of 6.9, the bandwagon is underway, with the Bulgarian already acquiring more than 20,000 new owners – more than double the tally of all but one forward since the end of the previous Gameweek.

Certainly, with a 30 point lead over any other Fulham outfield player, his importance to the Cottagers cause is obvious, while a lowly ownership of just over 6% highlights his differential appeal and offers an in-form mid-price alternative to the likes of Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, Arouna Kone and Romelu Lukaku over the last few matches of the season.

This makes sense with the blank. It's effectively twice as many games in 3 GWs, assuming Lukaku doesn't get rotated.

Could someone explain how united and Chelsea play in the PL on Sunday 30th, then eachother in the FA cup on Monday 1st.

Would this not suggest entirely different XIs, so most likely De Gea, RVP, Rooney, Mata, Haz et al to be rested on the Sunday? Noone seems to be talking about this. It is highly likely also that I've just missed this chat

    @Tinkerman

Read your blog, nice stuff. I'm massively guilty of this at times (not owning Michu or Fellaini this season for example). The peculiar thing is that knowing about this doesn't seem to help me make the tough decisions - it's a bit like being 'pot committed' when playing poker - you know you've almost definitely lost the hand but you put the last of your chips in because you've already got so much invested.

    More soon please 🙂

      Thanks!

The different between this and poker though is that by folding, you stand to lose something (i.e. you're no longer in the pot). In FPL, by selling a player, you lose nothing, except perhaps the difference between the selling fee and the buying fee and -4 if it's for a hit.

I see your point though! You do sometimes feel somehow committed, more so that you should at least.

You could arguably say you'd lose the points you believe are round the corner and therefore your advantage over your opponents too but yeah, it's not an exact analogy.

      Arhh GW.

      I just got back.

Metro game is based on OPTA stats, it has the same auto-subs as FPL. No bonus points (thank God)

The points are scored on a more even basis to the overall performance of a player during the game.

Goalkeepers seem to come off worst and it's difficult to have a regular high scoring keeper.

Cazorla is currently by far the highest scoring player.

1 transfer per week which cannot be rolled over (use it or lose it)

2 mini wildcards at the end of each transfer window when an extra 5 transfers are added for use in that GW only.
Additional (hits) @ 25pts each any time over the free transfers.

I do indeed. I rate it more than FPL. It retains the crucial point hit element that a good fantasy football game needs but because it is based on Opta stats you can pretty much be safe in the knowledge that the top scoring players will be the top performing players.

Because of this there are certain players that fair far better on Metro than FPL. Cazorla is a good example as he scores, assists and has lots of accurate passes and touches. Rooney is good for this reason as well, as is Yaya Toure.

One of the best elements to it is the live scoring...you can watch your players gain/lose points before your very eyes.

FPL has a lot to learn from this...only drawback...the mobile app is pants.

Also take note of anything ILF says in this...he's doing very well indeed.. I'm a mere amateur in comparison with my top 1,000 placing in Metro (it has a tenth of the players of FPL so that's basically about 10,000)

I think Metro has a lot more committed players Jonty, so the top 2,000+ places are hotly contended.

Why aren't people treating the Walcott news, like other injury news, as if it's a joke? He's clearly injured, otherwise he wouldn't miss both England games to fly back home. Daily mail say he's going to have a scan but the early prognosis is 2 weeks out. Also he's not been ruled out for Reading, just a doubt, which is clearly logical.

Seems i can't do right for doing wrong...

No-one is treating the injury as nothing. It's just the tabloid's coverage of it...'likely to miss the Reading game'. But he's only just been reported injured and is going home for an assessment and the club (as they claim) are hoping it's only minor. They're just speculating about the injury. We'll hear more over the coming days about it's severity and whether he is really a major doubt for Reading.

Villa are looking half-decent of late and it might frustrate Suarez enough to pick up a booking and his ban... I've got nothing to play for apart from overall rank, so might just go for it. Plus, how cool is Berba?! 🙂

I think its an ok idea. Altough Suarez for one more week could be profitable, I also think he'll get the yellow against Villa but he has a good chance scoring against them as well.
The QPR game could turn tricky for Fulham so I'd be a bit wary of that.

My biggest problem with Berbatov is that he comes very close to big hauls and plays quite well, but it is always "close" rather than coming out with a point haul.

Suarez might be frustrating but he is pretty capable of putting some goals in against anyone and does so quite often.

I'm worried about Villa putting in another good display against Liverpool, Suarez firing a blank and also getting booked. Berbatov is frustrating to own, but when on form he's a decent asset.

Though hits can be pretty costly at this point of the season. I'll come back to it next week.

I have just had a terrifying thought.. What if Rafatation does actually work!?

Please bear with me while I try to get into the mind of Rafa.. Lets say that without rotation a Top Player can only be in form for 2/3 of the season due to fatigue. 1/3 of the season accounting for approx 12 consecutive game weeks. To counter this Rafa rotates the team; going down an 'it's a marathon not a sprint' route.

So without rotation (not taking into account; fixtures (both opposition and frequency) and changes in formation affecting player's role within the team) if a player starts well then dips in form he should bounce back for the last part of the season - Fellani/Tevez/Berba/The Stoke Defence? Likewise if the player had a slow start to the season he should be good until the end, Bale?

The exception to the rule would be the Top Top players who can beast it for the whole season Silva last year, not so good this year, definitely get him next year? Van Persie last season and up until recently, was a dip in form inevitable?

If we could fine tune a theory to accurately predict the upturn and dips in form we would have fantasy gold on our hands.

Is there any validity in this/Rafa's theory that fatigue kills form and are there any other players past or present that could prove or disprove the rule?

you can afford to bench him against some of the lesser la liga clubs surely. agree he can produce on poor form but why not have him fresher for the bigger games towards the end of the season if that is an option. not talking rafa style rotation but one game every dozen or so

        This

Until last season van Persie never made a full season without injury at Arsenal. When he played for Feyenoord he only had to play 34 games a season.

So he has never played well through 50+ games.

Suarez is a beastly street footballer who could play every day.

If Walcott is out for Reading, all the casuals will just swap him for Cazorla. How annoying.

Good point. I was really looking forward to having Caz over my ML rivals Walcott. Will be just typical of his luck

I'm not transferring Walcott out if he's only missing reading.... Still considering Mata to Caz though due to rafatation concerns.

This was my plan, but am now thinking Walcott to Cazorla and then the following week Mata to Walcott especially if Chelsea don't have a DGW, does that make sense or a wasted transfer?

waste unless your bench is really bad, plus you must lose fair bit of value in Walcott.

I'd just hold I think, even if he was confirmed as missing Reading.

Puncheon > Cazorla for me this week along with selling Sturridge (maybe to Berba) if his injury is serious.

It would give us an advantage over our rivals for out doubles team too.

I think you need to start playing a more short term hit taking fpl game. Your clearly never going to have a completely fit team, so just start rolling with it.

The patient, hit-free* approach isn't doing me any harm**!

          http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/6026/history/

*Apart from an ill-advised on in GW3.

**I regret not taking a hit to get Walcott for his DGW before I played my WC, but that's it.

My problems with fpl dont stem from my hit taking. The issue is very simple, I am incapable of picking a sensible 15 when wildcarding or at the start of the season. I always have a bad rank at the start of the season, and it always takes a nosedive when I wildcard.

Is Coleman (4.6m) a good pick? He's had 2 assists in his last two games, and one was against City. And Everton have a DGW.

    2) England team looks fine tonight. I would love a San Marino result, though...

so COULD be fit for Reading, but more likely WBA. I'll keep anyway I think. Depends on whether I go with a GW32 wc or a GW33.
