Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Norwich and Stoke

We roll out the third piece in a series of articles which analyse potential rotation pairings for the season ahead this morning. Having cast an eye over the West Ham/Southampton and Hull/Crystal Palace combinations, we now take a look at the prospects offered up twinning Norwich with Stoke.

The Fixtures

In a situation similar to our previous couple of examples, both Norwich and Stoke alternate perfectly on a home and away basis across the entire 38 Gameweeks. Over the first half of the season, the run of home fixtures on offer look strong and include four games against promoted sides, with just five fixtures against any of last term’s top six.

This applies to Norwich on three occasions – Gameweek 1 at home to Everton, Gameweek 7 against Chelsea and Gameweek 19 when United roll up to Carrow Road, while Stoke face City and Chelsea in Gameweeks 4 and 15 respectively. For those Fantasy managers eyeing up a three-way rotation, Fulham look the best fit with a schedule that reads (sun, WBA, STO, AVL, hul) over those five particular Gameweeks. Indeed, the Cottagers also rotate with Norwich over 36 of the 38 Gameweeks, offering a viable alternative to the “perfect” home and away rotation offered by the Potters. However, it’s a pairing that breaks as early as Gameweek 8 with two away trips, followed by a daunting Gameweek 10 that serves up a choice of a home fixture with United or an away trip to City.

The Norwich/Stoke partnership looks more inviting over the first half of the season, with the season climax looking a little more problematic. Between Gameweeks 20-28, this pairing would entertain Everton, Liverpool, United, City, Spurs and Arsenal over a run of nine matches, while home games against Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal from Gameweek 35 onwards is again a little tricky and may prompt changes for the run-in.

Defence

Stoke
The departure of Tony Pulis and subsequent arrival of Mark Hughes could well have a knock-on effect on how we assess the Potters’ main Fantasy assets for the season ahead. Stoke had the seventh best backline in the Premier League last time out – 45 goals against were just two more than United and Liverpool, for example – but Hughes’ determination to introduce a more attacking brand of football could prove detrimental to their ability to keep out opponents.

Certainly, Asmir Begovic should remain nailed-on for the Staffordshire outfit but after finishing 2012/13 on 144 points, joint-second for keepers, it would be a real surprise if his price is less than 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League. Having started last term at 4.5, the Bosnian was a budget sensation but with a loftier price tag attached, his appeal is likely to somewhat diminish. Robert Huth may be one to profit from Hughes’ installation. The big German has admittedly failed to justify our faith in the past couple of campaigns but he’ll be hoping to replicate the displays of Brede Hangeland, who racked up six goals under the Welshman at Fulham back in 20101/11. Although he managed just a single goal last term, Huth’s price is likely to remain at 5.5 due to Stoke’s defensive record, though the likes of Ryan Shotton and Marc Wilson may be cheaper at full-back, having started just 20 and 19 games respectively last time out. However, with reports of an approach for PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters, it appears that we could be in danger of losing Wilson as an option, unless Hughes looks to utilise his versatility and deploy him elsewhere.

While Stoke produced seven clean sheets at the Britannia, they were relatively resilient on the road and kept out their opponents on five occasions, with Begovic unbeaten away to the likes of Liverpool and Spurs. Indeed, in terms of goals against they were almost identical – Pulis’ side shipped 22 in front of their own fans compared to 23 away from home.

Norwich
The Canaries, on the other hand, were a little more predictable when it came to home and away returns. Eight of their 10 clean sheets arrived at Carrow Road, with Chris Hughton’s side keeping out the likes of United and Arsenal in front of their own fans and with both their away clean sheets arriving against relegated QPR and Reading, the decision to bench Norwich’s backline assets on the road was relatively straightforward.

Price-wise, John Ruddy is likely to benefit from the knee injury that forced him out of 23 of his side’s league matches last time out. The Canaries first-choice stopper may very well continue at his 2012/13 starting price of 4.5, given his lack of minutes – such a scenario would boost his prospects considerably and could bring Begovic into the equation, for those Fantasy managers willing to spend around 10.0 on a pair of keepers.

In terms of attacking potential, Seb Bassong, Michael Turner and Russell Martin all notched three times apiece last time out and while the former two also chipped in with a couple of assists, Turner proved to be more of a bonus point magnet, with 10 to Bassong’s five and Martin’s three. Bassong rarely missed a game, however, and ended up with 121 points – having started last term at 4.5 as a squad player at Spurs, he should move to 5.0 at least and may well come in at 5.5, taking his consistency of starts into account. Indeed, with the Norwich defenders likely to move out the budget bracket altogether, Ruddy could be superb value if he remains in the sub 5.0 category.

Attacking Options

The Main Men
With 34 goals to their name all season (21 at home, 13 away) Stoke were dire going forward under Pulis – only QPR, with 30 goals, found the net less often. From a positive perspective, a change in tactics under Hughes suggests there may well be better value further up the field in the campaign ahead.

Jon Walters profited from Pulis’ decision to occasionally field him in “the hole” and with spot-kick duties also in his locker, he accumulated 141 points last time out, courtesy of eight goals, three assists and 16 bonus points. The only Stoke outfield player to start every match, Walters could, conceivably, be set for a slight price rise to 7.0 or 7.5, though question marks remain as to whether he’ll operate in such an advanced position under Hughes. If Peter Crouch remains the first-choice forward, his seven goals and 128 point FPL haul is unlikely to result in a price increase and, similar to last term, should come in around 6.5 – Hughes’ more offensive style of play could prove beneficial to the former Spurs man next time round.

For Norwich, Robert Snodgrass will surely remain the stand-out option. The Scot was head and shoulders above any team mate last term and finished with 152 FPL points – 31 ahead of second placed Bassong and ninth overall for midfielders, above the likes of Frank Lampard and David Silva. With that in mind, a rise in cost seems inevitable – starting last term at 6.0 following his summer move from Leeds, Snodgrass is likely to move to around 7.0 but with set-pieces and corners in the bag, could still offer strong value. New boy Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has registered 28 goals in his past two seasons for Sporting Lisbon and is anticipated to come in around the 6.5 mark – security of starts shouldn’t be an issue, given the substantial fee Hughton has shelled out for his services.

Mid-Price and Budget Targets
Hughes has already talked up the prospects of Charlie Adam next time out. Subject of a recent Sleeper article, the Scot could be expected to hog set-pieces and corners if he is established as a first-team regular and, having produced a mere 85 points in 2012/13, should come in around 6.5 or even 6.0. Similarly, Matt Etherington will be hoping his prospects get back on track following Pulis’ departure. The winger produced 146, 124 and 121 points in the three season prior to last year but failed to register any attacking returns whatsoever – a drop to 6.0 looks certain, with even 5.5 a possibility.

Anthony Pilkington has the potential to be an under the radar option for the Canaries. The left winger notched five times in 25 starts compared to Snodgrass’ six goals in 35 appearances in the first XI and, having missed a few matches with a hamstring injury, may even drop to 5.5 from last season’s initial 6.0. Hughton’s tactics should determine how we assess the rest of his offensive options. If he continues with the 4-4-1-1 formation from his debut campaign in charge, Grant Holt looks set for no more than an impact sub role from the bench late on in games but a shift to a two man frontline could keep him on the radar, after he notched in each of Norwich’s last three fixtures in 2012/13. Holt’s omission from the starting line-up would also leave spot-kicks up for grabs and while Van Wolfswinkel may be favourite, the Dutchman’s poor conversion record may see Hughton look for alternatives. With the Canaries linked with a move for Swede Ola Toivonen, though, it seems Hughton is determined to freshen up his attacking options after seeing his side notch just 41 times in his debut season at Carrow Road.

I like the look of Riether and Stekelenberg for Fulham. Riether of course proved himself while on loan last year. Stek, a well regarded keeper.

At a little over £7 mil for the two, seems like very shrewd business to me. Fulham fans must be chuffed.

I prefer to rely on teams that set themselves up to keep clean sheets eg Stoke, West Ham and West Brom are my favourite teams. I can see myself having one Fulham defender price pending.

Ful/New, for the opening 9 GWs maybe. Trouble being they'd both have to go after that.

My plans are definitely flexible.Could WC for GW10.

I think Stekelenberg is great, but they just don't have a good keeper combo. Their best rotations up till Jan WC are with Palace & Hull, neither of which look like great keeper prospects, so I'm thinking Riether may be the way to go.

If Stekelenburg comes in at 5.0 and Ruddy comes in at 4.5, and they rotate H/A 36/38, that seems like a really good pairing.

I really like Stekelenberg and I am OK with him as my default option in those difficult weeks when they both face top teams. With his size, I think he will be brilliant in the Prem. And it looks like Jol has tried to solidify his back pairing with the buy of the Spaniard.

Anyone have any familiarity with the Dane Cardiff are in for ? If he is priced at 5.5 . . . a 6'4" forward with good technical ability on a respectable promotion team . . . another Benteke or Lukaku ? Maybe as a 3rd forward in a rotation with a 5th mid like P.Hernandez or Routledge from Swansea in a 3-4-3/3-5-2 rotation ?

No idea. Sorry, i'm going for 3 reliable, proven forwards like usual. RVP Suarez Ba (before he went to Chelsea) served me well for most of last season. Not gambling on the any of the spots - unless he's a Benteke ( main man + peno duties + superb form).

I hear you, but with so many strong attacking midfielders, I was thinking about going for 4 high-end mids and cheating with a budget 3rd forward and 5th mid.

that's a decent plan, but never worked for me. maybe some good FPL players have done it, but i've never got a budget 3rd forward (Anichebe, ALF, Lambo) at the right time (form-wise). i'd rather play it safe with 3 strong forwards. i understand the strong attacking mids will be too much to ignore this season, but i think i'll make do with a snoddy/nolan in the team again.

that's still a mystery for now. i think he'll classified as mid, especially if they sign a striker to fill in the void left by Graham, like Lukaku. Bale was also OOP on numerous occasions last year, but still a Mid not a Striker.

But Bale never played as the lone striker, as Michu did on numerous occasions. I don't think anyone could say Bale is a striker, but Michu was clearly played in that position a good few times. I think he'll end up as a striker, and even as a mid he'll be about 9.0, and at that price, I won't be touching him I'm afraid

Questons about Fernandinho, the new City recruit.

    1. Described as ""a defensive midfielder with a box to box style of play, contributing in large part to the defense and the attack. Also with a powerful shot and great passing range". Pretty much like Yaya, IMO. Is this Brazilian signed to replace the big guy or play alongside him?

    2. Is he a decent City coverage for the nice opening fixtures? Or do we still need an Aguero/Silva, or even Nasri?

That's what i'm thinking. No point getting him despite his potential if he's still going to have more attacking-minded players playing with him.

      1. Haven't seen much of him (CL group games v Chelsea) but from what I've heard he'll sit quite a bit and if anything, his signing will allow Yaya to break forward a bit more, while he sits quite deep. I certainly won't be considering him as an FPL option

      2. No, imo. Aguero seems a decent bet, and is the only City attacking coverage I'll really consider, even if they sign another striker, as seems likely.

        Higuain, imo.

I don't say that Rooney is a bad player, but his wages are too high - would be bad for team morale if he earns twice the amount the other top guys earn.

Higuain, on the other hand, is younger (can't believe he is 25, seen him playing for ages), doesn't hog media limelight like Rooney, and would be much kinder on the budget. I seriously hope that Wenger goes all-out to secure Higuain's services.

will be very happy if he comes over. If we get Cornelius, Ince and Wanyama we are looking for a centre back (Yobo looks like he's coming over), attacking cover (Kuyt is supposedly locked in already) and another holding mid and full back. I'd feel a lot more confident with those additions to the squad.

He seems like a really exciting prospect. The header in that video at around 1:18 is monstrously good!

I've decided that if he's 5.0 or less, I'll get him as first sub in a 3-5-2. May end up playing him every week if he's as good some people are saying.

Hmm, if that youtube video is showing his best bits I won't be having him .. looks pretty average to me other than looking decent in the air.

I've got a rule that I don't trust youtube videos anymore though since I saw a couple which made Albert Luque look world class when we signed him.

That video is weirdly poor but I think he is better than that. I think there is an outside chance of him coming in at 5m, which makes him the best prospect I've yet heard about at that pricepoint.

Yeah perhaps.. just looks slow with a poor first touch to me but we shall see. I'd be surprised if he's better than Nicklas Bendtner and I wouldn't be getting excited if he was off to Cardiff.

Don't think I had a striker for less than £6m last season but I suppose if you're planning on going for 3 5 2 as you mention above, you probably need to find the extra £1m.

A hopefully useful ranking of the "hardness" of next season's teams' nicknames.

    1. Red Devils - bowel removal, burning, fork-pricking: a force to be reckoned with
    2. Gunners - devastating modern artillery
    3. Tigers - the most ferocious of the big cats
    4. Villains - vague, could range from 2 shoplifters to 600 murderers. I used a median of 50-60 assorted burglars, fraudsters and robbers for the purpose of constructing the table
    5. Hammers - as used by (4) above
    6. Eagles - they can carry off sheep, extremely threatening to a regular poster
    7. Swans - they'll break you arm you know
    8. Cottagers - either a devasting public toilet encounter or some geriatric holidaymakers
    9. Pensioners - deadly behind the wheel of a car
    10. Black Cats - unlucky
    11. Magpies - dangerous to other birds, plus Kinnear effect
    12. Bluebirds - harmless when not sung about by Dame Vera Lynne
    13. Canaries - lose points for useful gas detection ability
    14. Potters - mild-mannered craft enthusiasts
    15. Toffees - sight danger to fillings, otherwise innocuous
    16. Saints - powerful but as a force for good
    17. Baggies - inoffensive legwear
    18. Reds - sky in the morning, some danger - but sky at night cancels it out
    19. Sky Blues - pleasant and relaxing shade

I have left out Spurs as their nickname is probably something we don't want to go into.

The Super 6.5m Striker.(“SSS”) An endangered specie?

Very soon it will be that time of the season again when everyone will be trying to get as much value for their 100m FPL budget. Cost need to be cut and budgets juggled. Identifying a "SSS" could be crucial in achieving our FPL goals this season.

It seems we have been spoiled last season with three "SSS" scoring 150+pts. I suppose Michu playing OOP and later as one striker might have an argument for inclusion in the 2013 list but since he was classified as a midfielder I'm leaving him out. Going back to 2011 I found at least one "SSS" per season.

    2013: Lambert(187pts),Benteke(166pts) and Lukaku(159 pts)
    2012: Ba(165pts)
    2011: Odemwingie(171pts). Let's not forget Carroll(5m?) with his 135pts.

Yesterday Mathmo touched on the characteristics of successful centre forward in the PL. Who will be our "SSS" in 2013/14?

Glen Murray(C. Palace) with his 31 goals last season would have been a good bet. He is out injured though. Rumour is Holt might move to Palace as cover for Murray. Can Holt regain his 2012 form? Cardiff has just signed Andreas Cornelius, highest scorer in the Danish Superliga with 18 goals last season. Norwich signed Ricky v Wolfswinkel(28 goals in 55 games) from Sporting.

Will our "SSS" be one of these players or dare I say Crouch under new management at Stoke? Agbonlahor? Or is it someone still to be signed in the next two months eg Wilfried Bony?

Let's hope our "SSS" turns out to be an Indian peafowl and not a labrador duck.

We'll soon find out in pre-season. Right now i don't think we have clear indication about the pecking order of Liverpool forwards, especially if Suarez's leaving.

it doesn't matter, i think all of the players you mention will share points, hence i'm getting Coutinho 😉

I actually like Borini, great positioning and a very good work ethic. He's a good finisher when confident but i think he won't play enough to warrant long term investment. However by all means consider him during DGW's or if injuries arise.

Did well for "SSS" signings last season...I had Benteke/Lukaku/Miralllas from day one and kept them right until DGW 36....(without injuries Mirallas would certainly have been in the 150 pts bracket as well)....It afforded a very good nailed on heavy hitter defence. Not sure if the same opportunity will come our way this season though but if it does i'll be straight on the case...

I don't think Gabby will set the world alight unless Lambert goes 442, and even then he will probably be shifted even further to the left. He has got the ability, but won't be in the right positions to get the FPL points you want regularly.

I agree. Who is left at the 6-6.5m range? Fletcher will prob be 7m again and Sunderland don't score enough. Berba probably 7m again. I was surprised how consistent Crouch has been with 4 of the last 5 seasons resulting in 125+ pts.

What about Long? With Lukaku probably staying at Chelsea he might get more gametime?

One of the legion mistakes I made last season was getting impatient too soon. I don't think I held on to any player for longer than 3-4 weeks if they didn't score or at least assist.

When is it time to get rid? Is it as simple as ignoring the FPL points and waiting for the stats to dry up?

(This is not hulk-whoring btw, I genuinely find this the most difficult part of the game)

In reply to your actual post, I think it depends on the caliber of player you're talking about. A top player is worth hanging on to, as over the course of a season (or lengthy run of games) they will most likely produce for you. A lesser 'punt' is one that if it fails early I then move on from quickly; as with everything there are the exceptions that make you look and feel very silly, but often it's this we remember and not the times that the shifting on of a deadweight has helped your score (albeit in a more gradual way).

That's a good point, thanks iCon.

I'm going to try to bear in mind the dead team that Ryan constructed that would have done extremely well last year. All those players had long barren spells but over the course of the season produced plenty.

      Examples from last season:

      - Mata & Bale went after their early 3 games when they did nothing. Boy did I regret it, got them back a couple of GW's later.
      - Got rid of Michu a couple of games before his immense goalscoring streak, never got him back tho.
      - Cazorla does nothing for 7-8 gameweeks, then gets a monster score. Repeat.
      - Held on to Tevez when he scored like 3 pts in 7 games.
      - Got rid of DDG when he lost his place in the autumn, never got him back.
      - Got rid of Baines in Christmas, then he had an awesome spring..

It's quite hard to get it right.

well if you hold on Carzola for the 7-8 weeks for 2pts. you should have transferred him out after his 2nd 2pts. and get someone else in.
than that period, the player you got in could have easily outscored carzola's 7x2pts. + 23pts.

      Hi.

I had the same problem as you to be honest. I'll share my take on this and you make what you want of it. My rank is bad 😛

I made the same mistakes as you early in the season, transferring people out unnecessarily, hence dropping in rank. Mid season I changed my approach completely as I went full on into stats and developed different metrics for different types of players. I'd set when I'd pick them up, what cues I'd look for to let them go and what margins I had.

For instance, me picking up RVP was for his goal + assist potential, so I monitored simple things like the amount of shots on target, tactical changes and (most imptly) whether he was still on corners, which was where he got most of his key passes from (and goals, you have to realise that Man United were ruthless form corners).

Set metrics like that for your players and they'll do fine.

TL;DR - Pick/Drop players according to stats you think you want and adjust accordingly. You might not get it right first time but you eventually will.

Mmm ok I'll start with the most obvious, and see how much you agree with me.

I'll start with the attackers as they're the easiest to elaborate on (and the most comprehensively covered).

For my forwards, the most "obvious" attackers for me to get were attackers that were actively taking shots, as well as making chances. So the first new names on the team sheet were made: RVP, Bale, Walcott, Mata, Fellaini (iirc) and Suarez.

The punts/cheap players that revolved around these constraints were more about form (for attackers) and such. Usually, I'd try and identify trends from each of the games (documented on my temporarily idle blog) and I'd make plans on whether to monitor, hold or drop. But for attackers, basically I was looking for shot patterns that were leading to goals (such as Benteke/Lukaku) or pass patterns that led to assists (which weren't as fruitful unfortunately, players were very erratic)

For defenders, there were "form trends" that you could identify, such as say, Liverpool's home record or Swansea's defensiveness away from home. Usually for defenders, if there WERE a reason to drop them, something drastic would have happened: Stoke becoming less reliable (I used Experimental 361 for that), but last season was a unique case for me as I went 2 big and 3-pick-1 at the back (which were Norwich, Soton and Stoke for form + the cheapness of Wilson)

Hopefully that sheds some light on the thought process, I usually ramble way too much. Thank you SO much for the reply though, GWM and Absinthe have mentioned great things about you 😉

Thanks, I agree with looking at shots, although I get greedy and like to look at combined shots and chances created to see which players stick out that don't get mentioned on here as obvious targets to pick.

Looking at my own transfer history last season, I can see periods where I didn't hold for long enough, and periods where I held for too long. Problem is, I can't really see a pattern to indicate how I was supposed to know this at the time.

      A few specific examples:

      - I held Lambert for 4 weeks during which he got 7 points in 4 games, he went on to get 24 points in the next 4 games after I ditched him.
      - I held Baines for a period of 12 gameweeks early in the season. He did OK but his PPG of 3.8 during that period was some way short of his season PPG of 4.7.
      - Likewise I held Berbatov for a period of 19 gameweeks, during which his PPG of 4 was 0.9 lower than his season long PPG.

Seems the story of my season was right players at the wrong time.

Yeah, I agree PPG can be deceptive. I was using it as shorthand for the purposes of this post to indicate the issues I had.

I dropped Lambert because he just wasn't getting the points for me. His shot stats were looking OK before, during and after I got him, but I guess I got impatient after 4 weeks.

Which seems odd given how long I held on to Baines and Berbatov, but I think I was fooled by Lambert's cheapness and lack of track record at this level (I had him relatively early in the season), so was less prepared to cut him some slack.

Baines and Berbatov just weren't earning enough points to justify their prices. Everton weren't getting clean sheets during that part of the season and it seemed extravagant to own Baines just for his attacking points.

In the case of Berbatov, I held him right through his period of 6 consecutive 2-pointers and I would have ditched him had it not been for more pressing matters to attend to.

Well it's good to know that you've got a clear mind of what you gotta do next season lol. Let's just hope that the dynamics of the EPL don't change TOO much despite the musical chairs with managers.

Baines still mystifies me though. There are certain players I find in FPL that I struggle to pass judgement on because of the lack of data at hand, especially if their form/tactical positioning varies (see Baines from LB to LWB and Vertonghen).

Wouldn't blame you for holding on to Baines though, it was hard to see any alternatives to that (I went triple Stoke for the record, nearly paid off coz I only started sporting it in December, which was a bad idea)

Justifying price is also another issue I'm facing at the moment. I've heard many arguments over what people expect out of mid-priced strikers. What is your take?

I actually wouldn't mind so much of the dynamics of the league change a bit, it would keep it interesting and everyone would have to adapt!

I've been looking recently at the points per pound of cost as a metric. If you look at this for different positions and price ranges, you quickly get a feel for the sort of target figure you should be looking for.

For a mid-price striker, mid to high 20s is what I'd be aiming at for this metric based on last season's stats (which may well be exceptional given the players we had such as Lambert and Benteke).

However any player who is way down on this metric (say mid teens or lower) is probably one I would be looking to move on.

Dude, don't say that. If you can't get it right, what chance have I got? 😉

My dear rabbit, you shouldn't assume that just because I post a bunch of statistical-related stuff on here that sounds half intelligent, that I am some genius FPL player.

My record would suggest otherwise (one top 10k finish in 3 seasons). However my actual playing style is not as rooted in the statistics as my posting history on here would imply. I'm thinking that next season I will follow the stats more closely, which is why I found Berbagod's approach above interesting to read.

there is no pattern, simple as that.

stop over-analysing thing, every player is not the same

well the exact opposite for me.
I will ditch them for the 2nd week running of bad performance this season (accroding to MOTD and fpl returns)
imagine the pts. you can get instead of getting 3x2pts., you can get that easily if you makea decent transfer in 1 week

As a complete beginner last season, this was the hardest part for me. Contrary to logic, however, I did way better in the second half season once I stopped hanging on to players who looked like they 'really must score soon, but didn't' and instead starting swapping them out at early signs of poor form (2-3 weeks max) even if it involved hits. I know this is contrary to most peoples thinking and maybe I just got lucky, but will be really tempted to swap and change fast again, hits galore, and see how it plays out . . .

I'd be wary of that approach. I did it in my first season and it panned out rather well. I did it again last season and it was an absolute disaster.

I think the more you do it, the more you rely on luck, especially when it comes to hits. I've learned my lesson on that front.

          Fair enough.
Maybe the fact that this worked for me in the later part of the season is important, and a reflection that this style of play works better once you can be really familiar with the players? I might try it as a limited period experiment after the Jan WC, for example, just to satisfy my curiosity . . . I'll be reviewing the stats too, of course!
