Scout Report – Dwight Gayle

Ian Holloway’s search for a new striker saw the Crystal Palace boss snap up Dwight Gayle from Peterborough United for a club record fee of £4.5m last week. The 22-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a four-year deal and is the second player to bolster the Palace ranks this summer, following the acquisition of Stephen Dobbie from Brighton.

One of 12 managers reportedly chasing Gayle’s signature, Holloway lavished praise upon the new boy after securing the deal, indicating he’s likely to be a key figure for the season ahead:

“He’s got an opportunity now to go and enjoy his football and I think he’ll score goals at Premier League level, goals from certain people just keep happening, it doesn’t matter which level you start at, they just keep happening. I think the way he plays, the boy moves like a top player. It’s now about helping him deal with the top level against top defenders. My chairman went in with a brief – don’t come out of the room without getting him – and I’m thankful. He’s given us a goalscorer of the future in our team right now, which is priceless.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Gayle was released by the Gunners as a teenager and picked up by non-league outfit Stansted in 2009. Having scored 59 times for the club during 2010/11, the forward was then acquired by Dagenham and Redbridge but was farmed out on loan to Bishops Stortford, where his eye for goal came to the fore once more, with 42 strikes in a year.

Returning to Dagenham in August 2012, Gayle registered seven goals in 18 appearances before Peterborough acquired him on loan in November last year. The club then signed him on a permanent deal a couple of months later for a fee of around £500,000 but despite producing 13 goals and six assists in 29 appearances, Gayle was unable to prevent The Posh from slipping out of the Championship into League One.

The Prospects

With last season’s top scorer Glenn Murray potentially out for the season after sustaining cruciate knee ligament damage in the Championship semi-final play-off against former club Brighton, Gayle’s prospects of game time certainly look good, judging by his new manager’s comments.

Having featured in non-league football a mere 12 months ago, the Palace new boy is keenly aware of his turnaround in fortunes and is desperate to vindicate Holloway’s decision to hand him a top-flight chance:

“He’s a good manager and for him to point out my talent and my ability is a good feeling. I just hope I can repay him with goals for the club and help them stay in the Premier League. He’s built a very attacking side, which is what you need really…The chance came and I had to grab it because I might not get another chance. To be playing in the Premier League from where I’ve come from is a big achievement really. I’m just really looking forward to it and hopefully I can take the opportunity with both hands and do well.”

Towards the end of last term, Holloway utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, only opting for a couple of forwards up top when looking to inject a little extra attacking edge to his team’s play. Likely to be handed the lone role up top, Gayle has the fleet of foot and finishing skills to complement Holloway’s tactics, allowing Palace to sit deep and break quickly on the counter – in addition, his speed and work rate will also be essential in maintaining the high pressing game required.

With spot-kicks also expected to be part of his armoury in light of Murray’s injury, Gayle may well be targeted by Fantasy managers eyeing up a cheap third forward – granted, question marks remain over his ability to produce at the highest level but promoted forwards such as Grant Holt and Rickie Lambert have more than atoned for a lack of Premier League experience over the last couple of campaigns.

A price of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated and with home games against Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham in the opening eight Gameweeks, Gayle has the platform to pick up the points at Selhurst Park. With Holloway confirming he has no plans to bring Wilfried Zaha on loan from Man United, Palace enter this season without their two star men from the previous campaign – Gayle’s contribution looks more crucial than ever if his new club are to prove the doubters wrong and avoid the drop.

In contrast to FPL, are centre-backs better than full-backs (ignoring full-backs with lots of attacking potential) in the Sky game? Would make sense because of the passing and tackling bonus points. Perhaps more chance of getting MOTM too? Any Sky veterans got a view on it?

That's precisely why I am not playing the Sky game. It takes at least a season or even two to get used a different scoring system and I've never played it. One fantasy game is enough for my sanity 🙂

One could argue we could start this season so in following years we would be better at it, but then again, FPL is enough 🙂

Mainly playing it because of the prizes, plus it will let me get all those players I don't have the balls to get in FPL.

Defenders very rarely get any bonus at all for example last year Chico averaged bonus every 90.7 minutes and had a total bonus points of 26. He was the top scoring defender in terms of bonus and had the best minutes to bonus ratio... i really feel people are putting too much emphasis on the bonus points, when sky introduced this last season everyone thought it would be massive and even i had players like lucas in my team to very little effect. Goals and assist are still the best way forward, if they supplement them with the occasional bonus then great. On another note the players that do get bonus points reasonably regularly are only useful if you have them for the whole season as they amas there points over a long time. If you have itchy transfer fingers you will see minimal benefit from a player who scores 2,4,1,4,2,1,4,2,2 etc

Just reed post on last page about the Nigerian games.
    79-0. Hahaha.
I'm guessing Nigerian fpl is all about stikers and getting the right captain.

"I scored 350 points this week. Huge red arrow. Lost my cup tie by 742 points too. Knew that -4 was a bad idea". 😀

A player who's price I am quite interested in is the forgotten man Michael Essien. He was a beast in his Chelsea (Mourinho) prime. Could be available on the cheap...

So you're obviously one of those people who believe Mikel will go just because you've read it on twitter or whatever. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I remember reading a quote from him saying he's not intending on leaving, and he only signed a four year extension last December. I also think he's far and away our best defensive mid, but I'd still imagine Lampard, Van Ginkel and Rami are all ahead of Essien.

It also seems the meaning of the phrase "nailed-on" has been diluted pretty significantly on here lately. Saying things like "Van Ginkel is nailed on" is complete and utter rubbish at this stage of the season, I don't see how you could have any idea of that.

Ok fair enough, obviously the tabloids are always right regarding these sorts of things. Have you not seen the amount of these "done deals" fall through already this summer, and the Mikel deal hasn't even been reported as strongly as many of these other deals. Whatever, we'll see how they line up in a few months, just don't spread nonsense on the forum masquerading as someone who actually knows anything.

    Kone or Jelavic?

Its a really tough call. Both play firmly in the centre of attack according to the heat maps. There's enough doubt at the moment to avoid both, but considering his track record with Martinez I'd say Kone looks the favourite at the moment.

Whichever emerges should be a great prospect with Martinez's wingback style of play.

My concern with Jelavic is that Baines had the most crosses by far of any player last season which Jelavic failed to deal with. Perhaps Kone will have more luck?

look at season before? he was scoring machine and he scored majorty of goals for 1st touch

i think that he was in really bad form last year and if he can regain his confidence he can score like he used to do

cause most of his carrer he has been superb finissher

in paper, jelavic sounds like the perfect target man for crosses, but as I watch MOTD, seems like he receive not much crosses

I see Kone more of a 'through ball runner' than meeting the crosses, but who knows until the season starts

Martinez will start Kone but could start both if he deploys his 3-5-2 formation? Not really confident with Jelavic after last season's woes, however he could regain a bit of form

    For fans.... FWIW:

    By Chuck Schilken

    July 9, 2013, 7:15 a.m.

The obituary of Scott E. Entsminger describes the late Mansfield, Ohio, resident as a fun-loving guy and a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan.

That may explain a playful zinger aimed at his beloved team that was tucked in the middle of the obituary, which appeared in the Columbus Dispatch on Sunday:

"He respectfully requests six Cleveland Browns pall bearers so the Browns can let him down one last time."

The Browns last won an NFL championship in 1964, have never appeared in the Super Bowl and haven't made the playoffs since 2002.

Entsminger, described as an accomplished musician who loved playing guitar, is said to have written a song for the Browns and submitted it to the team every year, along with "other advice on how to run the team," the obituary said.

It also requested that those attending the funeral service for the 55-year-old wear Browns gear.

Team spokesman Zak Gilbert said Monday that the Browns contacted Entsminger's widow, Pat, and learned his favorite player was Hall of Famer Lou Groza. The family will be presented with a Browns jersey bearing Groza's No. 76 but with Entsminger's name on the back, he said.

No word on the pallbearer request, though.

I wouldn't be so sure. Gerrard got 38 BPs in 36 matches last year vs only 4 for Coutinho in 12 which works out to be about 5 goals over a full season. Gerrard also scored more goals per game.

Have to disagree with you on this one. If Spurs bought Douglas instead of Paulinho, then it would have been a decent buy-but at too high a price, imo.

Paulinho playing with Neymar (arguably the best Brazilian player at the moment) and Fred (almost the league's leading goalscorer) did wonders for him at Confed Cup, but I think he will be exposed at Spurs like he was at Corinthians.

Haven't seen anything of Douglas so have no idea on that one. I don't think playing with those players had too much to do with it, he just seemed to dominate the midfield from what I saw. Again, haven't seen anything of him except for the Confed so maybe he played above his normal level but he looked like a decent player to me.

What nonsense are you talking? He had a few sub appearances, you can't judge him on that as a "fail signing". We paid 18 million for him. He won the Belgian League as top scorer at 17! He was always gonna be a great player.

My personal take on the whole Thiago situation has been that he won't leave. I wouldn't be surprised if the obviously stupid Villa transfer was mostly fueled by the Thiago situation. Both Iniesta and Cesc can (and have) play in the front 3 alongside Messi & Neymar which would mean less competition and more playing time for Thiago alongside Xavi and Busquets.

The buyout clause was too low because he didn't meet an appearance threshold. In any event, both him and his brother have been with the team since they were kids so no one thought he would leave. Incidentally, his brother - who some argue is the bigger talent - Rafinha, just signed a contract extension.

Thanks, PBJ. At a club like Sunderland, you'd have to believe a 10m player is brought to be a starter. I don't know what that means for Fletcher (and C. Wickham). Wonder if PDC would play with 2 up top. In any case, I am staying well clear at least at the start.

A pretty convincing force in the Prem last year, when most teams knew he was Villa's only game in town he still found goals. I think he's a ways better than Giroud, although I think Giroud will have a better second season. Not sold on Higuain at all.

You've mainly included almost all new signings. Well here's my view.

Chelsea : Lukaku (if we don't sign another striker)

      Everton : Coleman

      Fulham : Kacaniclic

      Liverpool : Aspas

      Man City : Dzeko

      ManUtd: Kagawa

      Newcastle : Ben Arfa?

      Norwich : Wolfswinkel

      Southampton Lallana/Ramirez

      Swansea : Shelvey

      Sunderland : Manone

      Spurs : Dempsey/Lennon
