Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

i wish him to stay in UTD and RVP benched but we all know that that wont happen

it would be better for him if he moves

fpl over UTD since i am not true fan and i just like them as club

    Mannone
    Coleman, Collins, Clyne
Snodgrass, Schurrle, Bale, Mirallas, Hazard (c)
    Aguero, Aspas

Boruc, Rodriguez, Turner (cardiff), Turner (norwich) + 1mil

And is Schurrle or Oscar the better choice?

Pretty standard team doing the rounds on here.

Don't like Schurrle, Aspas or J-Rod (not enough goals in him) myself.

Oscar the better pick of the 2.... Lamps a better pick than either imo.

Incidentally, Michu was mentioned as a 'fixture proof' player based on his performances against top sides. Great post about it earlier if you can find it. With Bony playing inf ront of him he may not be a bad choice.

I do agree with the GK comments though - the money would be better spent elsewhere. Clean sheets were thin on the ground - especially for the Manchester teams
          - early on in the season. Manchester City have a more attacking manager at the helm to make clean sheets even less likely. Bolster your attack, there are plenty of options this season. It may benefit your team even if the spare funds were to go in defence; under the new bonus points system defensive assets may provide value for money.

Calling all Man Utd fans (and others!) What price/deal do you think you should be getting for Rooney if said speculation is all true? Remembering that he is 27, has two years left on contract, which is astronomical, is "back up" according to the manger and will have submitted two transfer requests in the last few months. Early quotes in media were 25m... too low?

It's more of a hypothetical until we have some solid definitive news either way but with Real apparently wanting 35m for Higuain, Liverpool 40m for Suarez. Napoli sold Cavani for 50+.
It was Moyes wording that he was a back up that kicked this whole thing off...

The Mata deal isn't true, mourinho said this; The Mata bit is exceptionally heartening, as Jose clearly has a role in mind for him already. The Spanish media won't be thrilled to hear that, but it appears that Mata is Mou's "type".
With Mata, I need to get to know him better. I like sometimes to play with what I call 'wingers with the wrong foot' – right-footed men on the left and left-footed men on the right. He is the only left-footed player we have when we want to play with a winger on the right side, but the competition is hard.
He said that he wants to stay at chelsea.

The rest of the quote says...

"We will have Schurrle, De Bruyne, Mata, Oscar, Hazard and Moses for these three positions and so we have many more options than Chelsea had in the last year. These are crucial positions for me. I like these players to play with high intensity so to have five players for three positions is, I think, brilliant for me. It's fantastic." High Intensity is not Mata's style so that may make him Not Mou's type.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that these quotes can be taken any number of ways.

I dont want him to leave and he shouldn't, but i would pay 35m for Rooney happily 🙂

I think what a lot of people are forgetting about the Rooney deal is that Chelsea will gain a lot more out of the deal. They desperately need a world class striker and Rooney fits the bill perfectly. Chelsea will be a much tougher adversary with Rooney in the team and United isn't particularly interested in strengthening their rivals.

Likewise I don't believe Mata would add that much to the United team. We already have Kagawa who will play the #10 role in the absence of Rooney, RVP can play in that role as well if need be. It was the right call to reject the offer.

Exactly. Rooney is being greatly undervalued and underestimated here. He's much more worth than what people are saying. But if a better offer comes up with more cash, enough so that we can sign another midfielder like Fellaini, I think it would be fair to accept the offer then.

As much as I like Rooney, long gone are the days were Rooney won us the PL single-handedly. I think Mata and Fellaini would be good enough to fill the space that Rooney will leave behind. About Chelsea, if they aren't going to get Rooney they are getting some other top striker and Ibra at Chelsea scares me more.

I agree that we won't be much weakened by losing Rooney. However Chelsea will be much strengthened. How often have we seen Chelsea buy a big name striker only for them to fail so fantastically? I don't think Rooney is the sort of player that will fail. He is proven in the PL and will be a champion for them.

Yet he puts all the other AM's in front of Mata? I agree that it is a shrewd offer from Mourinho. Ultimately it will benefit Chelsea the most.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective - It's a sign of how highly Mourinho rates Rooney (and how much they need a top striker playing 4-2-3-1) that he'd sacrifice Mata or Luiz, for that matter

Put the deal in perspective; Rooney was unhappy and 'injured' for most of last season, but he still had a better statistical year than Cesc did at Barca.

Mata and 10 mil is close to nothing. Mata and 20mil is a fair discussion.

lol, you bring statistics into it and it makes it almost a fair swap, maybe even with Man Utd having to pay £5m + Rooney

I like everything except Aguero. I just don't see spending 11 mil on him given his disappointing display last year, new assets acquired up front, and uncertainty about the new manager's preferences. I will be plumping for RVP and I would wait a bit on Aspas.

    we should accept

    Luiz+Mata for Rooney,

then Luiz + cash for Fabregas

midfield of united then go from one of the worst in top teams, to one of the best
