The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League game has dominated discussion this week, as the community’s brainboxes leapt into action to help analyse the new prices and a change to the bonus points system. As well as assessing a tactical “bombshell” on the Sky Sports game, we also roll out our regular look at the community leagues taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

FPL’s revamped Bonus Point System has caused a lot of debate with the community’s eagle eyed members quick to work out which types of players are set to benefit and which will lose out.  Jack(off)Attack was on hand to let us know that defenders could be the immediate winners, with midfielders and attackers set to have to work far harder for their bonus points.

Bedknobs and Boomsticks then took up the baton for the bonus experts by working out which players will benefit. His analysis shows that support strikers like Fulham’s Brian Ruiz, creative midfielders such as Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and central defenders such as Phil Jagielka, of Everton, are likely to be among the biggest winners.

Demi was among the first to look at some of the best bargains in the FPL game. A tall and  handsome Bulgarian stranger from West London was among those he spotted in his crystal ball.

Some smelling salts was needed to revive  community members left in shock at a combined £26m price tag for Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale. Many are opting for just one of these heavy hitters but some community members have worked out a way to get both in their teamLateriser12 and SAB were among those to show that a credible 15 man team can be achieved with these two giants of the game on board.

Meanwhile, In Tommy We Trust has been using the ancient art of his alchemy to separate the gold dust from the fool’s gold within the FPL game.

Over the last week we decided to ask the community to share their expert advice regarding team selection and strategy in the Sky game. D1sable’s bombshell regarding the captaincy rules gave us more than we had bargained for. His news could prove a gamechanger for Sky players. We await official confirmation about his startling discovery.

Form over fixtures is one of those debates that is intrinsic to Fantasy Football  and when it comes to fixtures they don’t come tougher than Swansea’s. But should a poor opening schedule mean we overlook the investment and new faces in the Welsh side? Saniul certainly thinks a focus on fixtures could be overrated when it comes to a team on the rise such as Swansea.

Green Windmill has looked even closer at the fixture list and poses the question; are there any fixture proof players? Turns out there are quite a few as his excellent analysis shows.

When someone starts a post with ‘sorry for the long post but…’ it’s a sure sign that an epic tome is on the horizon. Pirate’s mammoth 2,500 word thesis on fantasy football strategy was exactly that, offering an armada’s worth of insightful thoughts on the game.

Fancy taking a punt on one of the new recruits in the Premier League? Let Pochettini guide you through their key stats up to now in other leagues.

Finally, McNulty’s look at goalkeeper rotation also caught our eye, especially his warnings about falling into a potential rotation trap.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation game reached its bartering stage  as teams look to swap their assets. A total of six deals were made last week. Chelsea led by Declan, Stoke run by Dynamic, Aston Villa under the guidance of Hvt and Swansea under Joga Bonito‘s leadership were particularly active this week. Big name players such as Radamel Falcao, Thomas Müller and Hulk found new homes. This week teams are bidding on defenders for the second time and submission of midfield targets must also be made by  23:59 (BST) on Saturday. Anyone looking to sign up for the game can do so here.

Aguero is not super cheap !

Too early to go for Anelka. Long might play up front on his own with Anelka on the wing

Surely your better to use the cash elsewhere then buy RVP when his price is slightly lower due to the firesale after his first 3 poor fixtures. At 14mil its foolish having him if he's not your captain

Yes he's does. But Swansea are no pushover at the Liberty, then its Chelsea and Liverpool. and if he doesn't score all the casuals will sell like crazy, especially if someone like Aguero or Sturridge ect have a hot streak early on.

It isn't always about captaincy though. Robin scored against Pool, Arsenal, Chelsea and City last season. He's a big game player.

Also, you need to see if the upgrade from your 10M striker to Robin is a greater one vs. the upgrade from your 6.5M midfielder to your 9.5M one. Whichever difference you perceive to be greater, go ahead with your choice.

That's true, plus they tightened up at the end of last season. Not sure they're worth ditching any of my 4.5m'ers for though.

Who do you think will start up top for WBA? Fortune and Lukaku gone, Odemwingie looks like he's on the way out, so that just leaves Long and Rosenborg.

Chelsea have publicly denied offering either player in part-exchange for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, their No 1 transfer target.

And on arrival in Malaysia for the latest leg of the club's pre-season tour, Mourinho could not have been clearer that both Luiz and Mata are part of his plans for the new season.

Asked about the possibility of selling either, he said: "No chance. No chance."

So the rumours definitely weren't true after all.

Because Mourinho is going to accept the rumours and let Mata and Luiz know they are not required?

      Two scenario's to this.

      1) Stunt from United to give Mourinho a taste of his own medicine. Serve and returned.
      2) Some truth to this but no way Mourinho or Chelsea are going to publicly state they want to let go off these two.

Chelsea were never going to let Man Utd have Mata or Luiz. By buying Rooney they want to dent Man Utd's title hopes...not sort of balance it with throwing Mata and 10m at them. Ridiculous rumour.

Point is Mourinho has a lot of no 10's and for some ridiculous reason he's not Mata's biggest fan. Talks are he offered either during negotiation for Cavani too according to hunter. And these rumours crept up early pre season too. I'm not sure they are true are not but there are two theories. Either some truth to it or a giving it back from United to Chelsea. Either way, Che will always deny it. Always.

Indeed, but that is what I'm getting at. He has never said the words 'I am not the biggest fan of Mata'

But that's the idea people now have in their heads. A lot of this is Abramovich and his cronies imo more than Mourinho if anything.

Read a few articles about how these rumours work. Follow a lot of journalists on twitter, have my opinion on who i find reliable and who i don't. No smoke without fire. I hope its a leak from Utd though. They keep talking about Roo, i want them to know we can give it back in even measure.

When Michu came last summer and took the league by storm I thought how the hell have we not heard of him. I decided to look into the new midfield and forward signings' (poopular ones) stats from previous club league games and work out how many points they would have averaged per app if they were in the FPL game (I have assumed each app is over 60 mins). I understand this leaves out BAPS ad different leagues are different qualities but I thought it would be interesting...

    Forwards :

    1. Nicholas Anelka - 5.5 - 15.8% FREE
Last Year - Shanghai Shenhua This Year - West Brom
22 apps, Scored 3 goals, 0 assists and got 4 yellow cards.
Therefore he averaged 2.36 points each app...

    2. Wilfred Bony - 8.0 - 15.2% £12 MILLION
Last Year - Vietnesse Arnhem This Year - Swansea
    30 apps, scored 31 goals, 0 assists, 4 yellows
Therefore he averaged 6 points per app 😮

    3. Van Wolfswinkel - 7.0 - 8.4% £8.5 MILLION
Last Year - Sporting Lisbon This Year - Norwich City
    30 apps, 14 goals, 0 assits, 4 yellows
Therefore averaging 3.7 points per app

Mids: - used their new clubs CS

    1. Paulinho - 7.0 - 15.6% £17 MILLION
Last Year - Corinthians This Year - Spurs
    23 apps, 8 goals, 3 assists, 6 yellows, 9 CS
Therfore averaging 4.4 points per app

    2. Wanyama - 5.0 - 11.7% £12.5 MILLION
Last Year - Celtic This Year - Southampton
    29 apps, 4 goals, 4 assists, 2 yellows, 7 CS,
Therefore averaging 3.3 points per app

    3. Jesus Navas - 9.0 - 6.9% £17 MILLION
Last Year - Sevilla This Year - Man City
    37 apps, 0 goals, 6 assists, 5 yellows, 18 CS,
Therefore averaging 2.8 points per app

    Who is the best value?
I x their points per app by 100 and divided it by their price.
    Forwards - Anelka 43 - Bony 75 - RVW 52
    BONY IS THE BEST VALUE

    Midfielders - Paulinho 62 - Wanyama 66 - Navas 46
    WANYAMA IS THE BEST VALUE

I know that it is not very accurate but I thought it might be interesting to see... 🙂

    Hello all,

Some of you may remember I did some analysis on when FPL players played their wildcard last season, results which can be found at http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/18/sleeper-charlie-adam/?hc_page=12&hc_refresh=452#hc_comment_4983113

What stuck out was the proportion of top players who opted for the early wildcard - in the area of over 85% of the samples in the top 2K (more detailed breakdown is the post itself) There have been some excellent wildcard strategy posts around so hopefully this will add to the debate they started. Why the early wildcard was such a success last year, and is it a viable alternative this year?

The first thing to note is last season started with a Chelsea DGW, which did not occur the previous season. It would have been very useful to have done the same sort of study for the season before (11-12) to determine what sort of effect the DGW had on the correlation between rank and an early wildcard.

The start of a season is wracked with uncertainties. New imports to the league may flounder while others flourish, established names may flop while slow burners from the year before come to fruition. The top performers last season, by wildcard-ing early, hopped on to the early bandwagons and settled the numerous debates quickly. Hazard over Mata, Tevez over Aguero, RVP over Rooney, Michu over just about anyone. They also managed to capitalise on the price rises, a phenomenon that, for all its flaws, does benefit the early adopter. Furthermore, some did so with the intention of treating GW1 as a springboard, and starting again with a clean sheet in GW2; a tactic used by the FPL winner. This method not only allows players to have an extremely strong team for GW1 without worrying about the consequences, it also allows them to react quickly to first competitive game impressions and manager preferences very quickly.

Then there's the psychological impact, and this is where it gets more interesting. I had an earlier post about ghost teams and how well they did in randomly selected mini-leagues (my post history no longer shows this, but its out there. Worth a read if you're interested in the methodology used to generate the data in the rest of the paragraph) I did some superficial analysis on some of the data on the league members to follow a hunch. The data showed some interesting trends; one side effect is the amount of 'mistakes' trailing teams tend to make. Understandably these arrive in the form of differential captaincies, which at times tend to end disastrously. This goes some way to explain the importance of a good start. While having a good GW1 score is by no means a guarantee of a good rank overall, or even a good GW5 score, an early lead forces your mini-league opponents into making more mistakes.

The second, forced wildcard in January has indeed fundamentally changed the game from a few years ago. Holding on to the wildcard for the latter part of the year seems futile. Early season bandwagons have now grown wings and taken off, flying well beyond the reach of your now modest budget. Mid season discoveries and DGW's are catered for by the January wildcard.

If players are in the position of having a wildcard to play in the last third of the season, then - almost by definition - they will probably be trailing, by virtue of having missed early bandwagons, missing out on team value, and sticking to poor performers for longer than necessary. A wildcard played at this time, in the hopes of a sprint finish, often results in an teams that are unplayable for the Gameweeks after the wildcard has been played.

It appears that WC's are better used as slingshots for the start rather than booster rockets for the finish line.

Good post. I saved mine last season for the first time, and wished I hadn't. Unless you are able to pick all the gems from the start, the benefit of a reshuffle and getting players in cheap, plus the price rises in the extended GW have got me planning for a post GW3 WC. Latter DGWs can normally be planned for in advance, and the odd point hit or two can normally cancel out others' WC.

Agreed, I think pride gets in the way of an early WC, or the irrational fear that we might really really need to use it later.

Ugh, I hadn't realised I'd posted this at the bottom of the page. Well, it's there if anyone wants it! 😉

No problem, I'll have a look for it. I'm genuinely interested to know how the poster got those results and why mine are so different.

I would imagine there's a few teams that did very well that went pretty much untouched; think someone posted a GW1 team that could have finished in the top 1K without a single transfer or captaincy change!

The risks of taking a sample have struck I suppose! But even then, it would have to be reasonably bad luck to select 50 that were skewed so much.

Hey Maxi - I get your point but it's great that folk feel that they can contribute long article style posts in the knowledge that they will get some attention due to voting, stickies and Hot Topics. I believe there was this kind of stuff around before but it got lost and buried as the site was so fast moving. This kind of posts won't be to some people's taste but surely they just move on and read the next post and let the folk who want to absorb this enjoy it.
