Scout Report – Stevan Jovetic

Last Friday saw Man City make a couple of significant moves in the summer transfer market. Having acquired Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla earlier in the day, Manuel Pellegrini added to his forward options by snapping up Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina in a deal reported to be in the region of £22m. The 23-year-old Montenegro international is the club’s fourth signing of the close-season, following Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Negredo to the Etihad as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his first-team ahead of his debut season at the helm:

The subject of plenty interest over the summer, Jovetic is thought to have rejected the advances of both Arsenal and Juventus to join up at the Etihad. Speaking to the club’s official website, he revealed that City’s long-term pursuit was key to his decision, with City centre-half Matija Nastasic also playing a part in persuading him to make the move to the Premier League:

“Manchester City has wanted me for a long time, more than everyone else. They have a big project here and are always fighting for the Champions League and Premier League. This is the reason I came here. I also spoke with Nastasic who tells me good things about Manchester and the players and everything here. He sent me messages every week telling me to come. Now I am here and look forward to playing with him every week.”

The History

Starting his career as a 16-year-old for Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic produced 13 goals and 10 assists over 51 league games between 2006 and 2008, with a further 10 goals arriving in 10 European and domestic cup matches. His performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, with La Viola splashing out £8m for Jovetic’s services in May 2008.

The six foot one forward’s first season in Serie A was a transitional one, however, with just two goals and a pair of assists delivered from 29 matches. Jovetic stepped up a level in 2009/10, with six goals and 10 assists from 29 appearances, but his progress was halted the next year after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the entire 2010/11 campaign. Returning from injury, he racked up 27 goals and 11 assists over 58 Serie A matches in his final couple of seasons at the club.

On the international stage, Jovetic notched twice in six appearances for the Montenegro Under 21s and has turned out for the senior side on 27 occasions, finding the net 10 times.

The Prospects

Mainly utilised as a forward in a 3-5-2 formation at Fiorentina last term, Jovetic is a versatile type who has the ability to play in a number of positions under Pellegrini. While fellow new boy Negredo is a more one-dimensional, typical centre-forward, the Montenegro international summed up his all-round game by saying:

“I’m a forward who is good in one-on-one situations. That’s my best quality and I think my best years are ahead of me. I have played in a lot of systems. I can play as a striker, behind the striker or on the left. I think and I hope I can score between 15 and 20 goals in all competitions this season.”

Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system should prove beneficial to Jovetic, then, but with Aguero, Negredo, David Silva and Jesus Navas all vying for the four advanced roles, in addition to the options provided by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko, rest and rotation will surely come into effect.

With both Negredo and Sergio Aguero perceived as more natural goalscorers, it’s unlikely that Jovetic would get the nod to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation, for example, with a role in “the hole” or even wide left a possibility. His trickery in possession and eye for a killer pass may be more suited to a more withdrawn, playmaker role, thus reducing his appeal as a Fantasy prospect –indeed, as mentioned in the Negredo Scout Report, Aguero could still be the forward to earn most game time under Pellegrini, due to his ability to play either of the central roles up top.

Both new boys have yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, though a price of 9.5 looks likely for Jovetic and Negredo in Fantasy Premier League – less than Aguero but clearly more than the 7.5 priced Dzeko, who looks forced further down the pecking order on the back of Friday’s business. At that price, Negredo would likely be the better value due to his advanced role though much depends on just how much Pellegrini plans to utilise the depth of his squad over all competitions – it may well be that Fantasy managers are faced with the same dilemma posed by Roberto Mancini, where we’re anxiously awaiting the team sheets every weekend.

At present, then, it’s hard to see past Aguero as the man most likely in terms of security, though the remaining pre-season games will hopefully give us a window into the new manager’s thinking. With home games against Newcastle and Cardiff and a trip to Hull in the opening three, the platform is certainly there for Pellegrini’s side to rack up the goals and get their season off to a quick-fire start as they look to reclaim the title from neighbours United.

Not a RMT as such....as it'll change. But just tinkered and found what I think is a good balanced and flexible side for gwk1 and for the first few weeks with a few free transfers. So its a kind of share my team post (SMT).

    Foster- Boruc
    Collins - Mert - Toure - Chester - Turner(cardiff)
    Haz - Bale - Nolan - Coutinho - JTom
    Aguero - Giroud - JRod

Interesting coverage. Opting for Coutinho and Aguero over Silva and Sturridge .

But otherwise, it's as good a team draft as I've seen. Can't see any faults. It's just a matter of who you feel is the best for team coverage.

I'd take Silva and Sturridge over Couts and Aguero, but that's just my opinion.

I'm keeping an eye on pre season re both of them and will happily change.

Basically whoever plays support striker...in the hole in Pellegrini's side will likely benefit the most. Also Aguero's on penalties. That's a big attraction for a top four side player. I'd prefer Silva though as it frees up another 2m.

Coutinho v Sturridge is based on Sturridge being injured at the mo and his injury record in general. Coutinho's also a bit of a 'like him as a footballer' pick. I honestly think though they will probably score about the same.

Like Giroud over Walcot (although many on here will disgaree), and i think Wilshere may become an option at 6.5. One tactic that has served me well where there are two viable options is choosing the cheaper of the two and Giroud over Wally fits the bill.

We all have those 'hindsight' moments where we think to ourselves "I knew I should have brought so and so in".

Looking at your draft now, can you imagine what that initial hindsight moment might be, and does it make you think about changing your draft?

For me I can imagine kicking myself for not getting in any Man City forwards when they inevitably go on the rampage.

Last season it was getting Mata and Terry over Hazard and Ivan.

This season it'll be not getting RVP in, when Bale gets 2pts and RVP gets a hattrick.

Godammit, bottom of last page, shameless repost

So, say Chelsea have their DGW planned for Gw2. What would people's strategies be?
My thoughts are that it would be mad to to in with three Chelsea players considering you would either have to have a damned expensive bench or take a hit in order to avoid expensive bench. On the other hand you would then be going into what could be a valuable start without the coverage, Hull, Man Utd, Villa as their opening fixtures. I know Man Utd will be a tough game but with Mourinho as their new manager, Moyes new system finding its feet, you would expect Chelsea to score against them and there are surely points in that game.
I think I'd be tempted to go in with the 3 players from Chelsea but instead of the expensive options like Hazard, Mata, Luiz, I'd go in with Lampard, maybe Azpi, etc to shave off the cash affording the option of either benching them or choosing to sell for the blank and leaving cash to upgrade to any early bandwagons.
    Thoughts?

    Here is my FFS wishlist

    1) That there was more than one podcast a week , maybe one after the weekend reviewing and one previewing before the next weekend. Ideally even more podcasts with some based around stats, analysis, transfer rumours, stories, news, community based etc.
    2) Every time any player is mentioned in any article they have their current FPL price added in brackets.
    3) That FFS showed how they had performed ie were transparent on how useful the information being provided was, whether the rmt is accurate or whether the scout picks did well or poorly etc
    4) That FFS always gave their view, it often feels like a lot of articles give information but don't give the sites view or a conclusion.
    5) That they build into a homecrowd an easy way to stop us losing threads we are interested in and don't have to keep finding them to check to see if someone has responded.
    6) That we have more regular facer articles he seemed to come and go for some reason last season.

There are other things but these are what I consider the most important, does anyone have any thoughts?

They were fanscinating but I'm not sure they helped that much. It allowed us to understand players' injuries a lot better but often we didn't have access to crucial info and we had to rely on managers/players telling the truth

      3) I agree that a full appraisal would be interesting, or at least the ability to go back and view historical RMT scores.

Some more transparency would be nice for RMT (e.g. more access to base values etc.) but I'm not sure they want to give too much away.

I think RMT is due some improvements anyway but I could be wrong.

Can I have a RMT please?

Fearful of ommitting RVP and Bale I have drafted the following team. I would be very grateful for your thoughts!

    Foster, (Boruc)

    Clyne, Collins, Parr, (Chester), (Baker)

    Bale, Hazard, Mirallas, Thomas, (Quinn)

    RVP, Giroud, Sturridge.

I don't think City bought Negredo for the bench. They already have Dzeko for the bench, who is of Negredo-mould.

I think Pellegrini believes Aguero isn't exactly a proper CS, much more comfortable behind the striker, and Dzeko isn't too good for the starting XI. Which is why Negredo arrives.

I'd go one step ahead and say that Jovetic is cover for Aguero, and Dzeko is cover for Negredo.

    Negredo IN for me 🙂

I was convinced that's how he's play when he joined Man City. ....not sure Mancini really understood his skills. He's a very unselfish player, quick runs but really delights in making goals as much as scoring them..he's the anti-Darren Bent.

I'm wagering Pellegrini will get the best out of him this season.

It's never that simple though. We don't know how the new signings will settle and whether they will be thrown into the team or given time to aclimatise.

We also don't know whether Pellegrini plans to stick with his best players for most games or rotate a lot.

He's playing all friendlies, and there is no reason why he won't be competition for Toure, even if Liverpool sign no one.

    Blocks of 4 weeks

    A) Zaba + Kaboul + snodgrass + Aguero
    or
    B) Nasty + Walker + Mirallas + Negredo

I really like Negredo as a 4 week punt. Got a feeling he'll be scoring more goals than Aguero who will play behind him.

Mirallas and Snoddie is a bit hard to divide for me. Value-wise Snoddie seems to better but my gut feeling says Mirallas since he's OOP.

Defensively it's pretty similar. B is a bit more stable due to Kaboul's unknown nailed-on-ity.
People are recommending Merte / Coleman but meh.. Fixture wise these two are better and Everton will be playing 3-4-3, yes Coleman is OOP but defensively it'll be worse for Everton.

For GW1 who do you think is going to be the ONE player who goes mental and scores 15+ points?

I think it might be Walcott
