Scout Report – Stevan Jovetic

Last Friday saw Man City make a couple of significant moves in the summer transfer market. Having acquired Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla earlier in the day, Manuel Pellegrini added to his forward options by snapping up Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina in a deal reported to be in the region of £22m. The 23-year-old Montenegro international is the club’s fourth signing of the close-season, following Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Negredo to the Etihad as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his first-team ahead of his debut season at the helm:

The subject of plenty interest over the summer, Jovetic is thought to have rejected the advances of both Arsenal and Juventus to join up at the Etihad. Speaking to the club’s official website, he revealed that City’s long-term pursuit was key to his decision, with City centre-half Matija Nastasic also playing a part in persuading him to make the move to the Premier League:

“Manchester City has wanted me for a long time, more than everyone else. They have a big project here and are always fighting for the Champions League and Premier League. This is the reason I came here. I also spoke with Nastasic who tells me good things about Manchester and the players and everything here. He sent me messages every week telling me to come. Now I am here and look forward to playing with him every week.”

The History

Starting his career as a 16-year-old for Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic produced 13 goals and 10 assists over 51 league games between 2006 and 2008, with a further 10 goals arriving in 10 European and domestic cup matches. His performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, with La Viola splashing out £8m for Jovetic’s services in May 2008.

The six foot one forward’s first season in Serie A was a transitional one, however, with just two goals and a pair of assists delivered from 29 matches. Jovetic stepped up a level in 2009/10, with six goals and 10 assists from 29 appearances, but his progress was halted the next year after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the entire 2010/11 campaign. Returning from injury, he racked up 27 goals and 11 assists over 58 Serie A matches in his final couple of seasons at the club.

On the international stage, Jovetic notched twice in six appearances for the Montenegro Under 21s and has turned out for the senior side on 27 occasions, finding the net 10 times.

The Prospects

Mainly utilised as a forward in a 3-5-2 formation at Fiorentina last term, Jovetic is a versatile type who has the ability to play in a number of positions under Pellegrini. While fellow new boy Negredo is a more one-dimensional, typical centre-forward, the Montenegro international summed up his all-round game by saying:

“I’m a forward who is good in one-on-one situations. That’s my best quality and I think my best years are ahead of me. I have played in a lot of systems. I can play as a striker, behind the striker or on the left. I think and I hope I can score between 15 and 20 goals in all competitions this season.”

Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system should prove beneficial to Jovetic, then, but with Aguero, Negredo, David Silva and Jesus Navas all vying for the four advanced roles, in addition to the options provided by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko, rest and rotation will surely come into effect.

With both Negredo and Sergio Aguero perceived as more natural goalscorers, it’s unlikely that Jovetic would get the nod to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation, for example, with a role in “the hole” or even wide left a possibility. His trickery in possession and eye for a killer pass may be more suited to a more withdrawn, playmaker role, thus reducing his appeal as a Fantasy prospect –indeed, as mentioned in the Negredo Scout Report, Aguero could still be the forward to earn most game time under Pellegrini, due to his ability to play either of the central roles up top.

Both new boys have yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, though a price of 9.5 looks likely for Jovetic and Negredo in Fantasy Premier League – less than Aguero but clearly more than the 7.5 priced Dzeko, who looks forced further down the pecking order on the back of Friday’s business. At that price, Negredo would likely be the better value due to his advanced role though much depends on just how much Pellegrini plans to utilise the depth of his squad over all competitions – it may well be that Fantasy managers are faced with the same dilemma posed by Roberto Mancini, where we’re anxiously awaiting the team sheets every weekend.

At present, then, it’s hard to see past Aguero as the man most likely in terms of security, though the remaining pre-season games will hopefully give us a window into the new manager’s thinking. With home games against Newcastle and Cardiff and a trip to Hull in the opening three, the platform is certainly there for Pellegrini’s side to rack up the goals and get their season off to a quick-fire start as they look to reclaim the title from neighbours United.

Looks like Toure could be nailed on at centre back for Liverpool (assuming Rodgers and Skrtel haven't made up).

        Doesn't refer to Toure.

He says he's looking for cover at left back and an attacker. I'm assuming this to mean he's not looking for a centre back. Previous rumours were with Papadopulos and Alderweireld.

Skrtel is out of favour for some reason, so I'm assuming Toure comes in as first choice along with Agger.

Skrtel, Wisdom, and Coates as backups.

        Too many assumptions?!

He did seem to be out of favor big time towards the end of last season... still feels a bit risky to put in Toure, but has a decent upside and saves 0.5 from getting Migs.

    Value.

More and more important this season I think.

For example, I don't think there is any value in any Utd attacking players as there is so much uncertainty this side of RVP. Similarly, at Chelsea you have to go big. City, well 9.0m is your starting point, unless you want Fernandinho who will play deep we can assume.

However, some chinks of value are present at Arsenal and Pool. We would all like to have all the big hitters, but budget obviously will no allow. We can adequately cover these teams with cheaper options in the form of Arteta and Aspas. Walcott/Cazorla/Coutinho may well score more, but the aforementioned two at 7.5/7.0m each offer a way into those teams at a mid-price that is simply not possible with Utd/City/Chelsea. This then frees up budget to go big on these other teams, along with one would assume Bale for Spurs cover. There is the obvious budget friendly move of taking Paulinho instead of Bale and saving 5.0m, I did consider this myself to allow funds for Aguero and RVP, but have since backed off this idea following the new City signings.

    Any thoughts?

      Oh my team as stands

      Mignolet
      Mertesacker Coleman Clyne Collins Chester
      Bale Silva Lampard Arteta Wanyama
      RVP Aspas Gayle

3-5-2, Clyne/Collins rotating. Mulling over playing both every week and not having Merte to upgrade Lamps>Haz. But Merte looks tremendous value!

I would disagree with thinking in terms of coverage. Arteta is one who could come good, but Snodgrass/Mirallas could outscore him no matter who they play for. Same tenfold with Aspas vs. Kone, Lambert et al at a similar price.

I agree with this. I'd rather have Snod/Mirallas/Nolan instead of Arteta. Sturridge was immense in terms of FPL last half of the season, think I'll shell out of the extra over Apas.

I don't think you will get much response on this site for TFF as it is predominately FPL but here are my thoughts.

At 3.5m Mignolet is a better GK pick. Not sure Coleman/Luna are the best picks for their price. Rat at 2.8m is better than Luna IMO. The midfield looks great, at 3.3m Gouffran could be great value. The two forwards are great picks and should bring plenty of points.

        Cheers fella,

Rat is definitely worth considering. I think Luna could give similar returns over the season, and is 0.1 cheaper, but West Ham's fixtures are better.

Coleman under Martinez is pretty much first on the teamsheet. Well, after RVP, Bale, Walcott and Sturridge...

Mignolet's not cheap enough to be essential for me. He's priced as Liverpool keeper.

With that in mind which is best? I had Silva originally in a 352, but tempted by negredo in a 343

    Really require some clarification here.

On the page it says Defenders get 4 BPS points for scoring, while 8 points would be given to a forward for doing the same.

    Where is the logic?

BPS means points that go towards the CHANCE of getting bonus points. A defender's job is not to score and so they are rightly given less credit for influencing a game via goals than a striker.

Well in Points (proper ones) its the other way.
And defenders get block points and stuff.
So I guess for bonuses its about giving points to the guys who do the job they're employed for.

      I agree with you.

Defenders should get more points than strikers when they score.

      But they don't.

Defenders are shafted in the bonus points.

I read some people on here saying that the new BPS favour defenders 🙄

a city forward will always be a gamble. Always. RVP is going to outscore every single one of them over the full season. But there will be some periods where having one of them could pay off hugely, and the very beginning, with no CL to worry about, with RVP having a tough start, is surely as good a time as any.

This is predicated on Aguero starting the first three games, which I think isn't too big a punt.

      I'm going with Mig + 4.0

      Justification is threefold:
      - I need the funds elsewhere.
      - I'm terrible at picking which keeper to play.
      - Mig should get some save points away from home even if he concedes. He's a great shot-stopper.

Yep I'm having a 4.0, the 0.5 you save is so useful. None of the 4.5 keepers are from a defensively sound team, the only time I'd ever play one is if Migs was away at the top 4/6 teams and I simply don't think that's worth the 0.5

Something similar happened 4 years ago with Man United, when they had to face Zenit, and they only 1 game that week.

It's important to note that last year, there were no English clubs involved in UCL Qualifiers, which resulted is no Televising issues. However, it is not the case this year...

      1. Jov, no. Negredo - this season's Dzeko. Will score four in a game and get dropped anyway. Get him at the right time, will mostly be luck.

Toure could be a bargain pick at 5.0 with a good opening draw for Liverpool. Thanks for the helps lads 🙂
