Scout Report – Nacer Chadli

Tottenham confirmed their second deal of the summer transfer window on Sunday, with the acquisition of Nacer Chadli from Dutch club FC Twente. The versatile 23-year-old Belgian joins up at White Hart Lane on a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m and follows Paulinho to the club, as Andre Villas-Boas bolsters his midfield options for the season ahead.

The Spurs boss was clearly delighted to announce the deal yesterday, with the new boy already joining his team mates for training ahead of tomorrow’s Barclays Asia Trophy match against Sunderland in Hong Kong:

“Nacer Chadli is a player that we have been following for quite some time and we managed to strike the deal in these last days. So we’re pretty happy. As a player he is extremely versatile, playing different positions up front. He has played with tremendous success on the left for Twente as a winger and as an attacker for Belgium.”

The History

Chadli’s youth career spanned across three Belgian clubs, including Standard Liege, but his big break arrived in 2007 courtesy of Dutch second division outfit AGOVV Apeldoorn. He spent a total of three seasons at the club and, having produced 11 goals and nine assists over 52 appearances in his first couple of years, stepped up a level with 17 goals and 11 assists from 37 games in 2009/10.

Snapped up by FC Twente in the summer of 2010, Chadli immediately became a key member of the first-team. His first two years at the club harvested 13 goals and 11 assists from 56 Eredivisie matches before he once again improved during his third season, with 12 goals and five assists from 26 games (including play-off matches). The Belgian also chipped in with six goals and six assists in 10 Europa League matches in 2012/13, a sign of his flourishing eye for goal. On the international stage, Chadli has turned out for his country on 14 occasions and has found the net twice.

The Prospects

Predominantly right-footed, Chadli’s adaptability means he can be fielded anywhere across the forward line, though his preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, cutting inside onto his stronger foot. Standing six foot two, his strength, pace and trickery down the flank, allied with a penchant for a long shot, could well see the Belgian quickly nail down a starting role in Villas-Boas’ first-team.

Far more significantly, his acquisition could be key to how we assess Gareth Bale’s likely position in the season ahead. The signing of Paulinho earlier this summer had suggested Villas-Boas was primed to move to a 4-3-3 with the Welshman on the flank but it now seems more likely that Chadli’s arrival will ensure Bale remains in the central slot behind a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1. Villas-Boas has utilised the likes of Clint Dempsey, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby on the left last term in order to play Bale in “the hole” but none of the trio offered the speed of Bale or, indeed, Aaron Lennon on the opposite flank – a problem for Villas-Boas, given how crucial the idea of quick transitions are to his tactical approach.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, it’s likely that Chadli will come in around the 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – putting him on a par with Lennon and Dempsey, and just slightly more than Sigurdsson and Paulinho at 7.0 apiece. Providing Bale keeps the central role, the Welshman looks almost essential after racking up 14 sets of double figures last time out but a hugely enticing run of fixtures could also bring the Belgian into contention from the off. With Palace, Swansea, Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa and Hull in seven of the first nine Gameweeks, doubling up on the pair could be a viable tactic for those who feel the idea of “coverage” is somewhat over-rated.

How is he proven though? Or more importantly how is his 1/3rd of a season playing well any more important that what Sturridge has done?

I dont see how he is any more proven than Sturridge but okay.

Sturridge scored two hattricks last season.

Luckily you are not Liverpool manager then. Sturridge is best played in the selfish pr1ck position aka centre forward.

That doesn't mean he will play CF over Sturridge though does it? Especially when Aspas doesn't often play as a lone striker (from what I've read - not trying to talk like I know what I am talking about with Aspas, unlike some...)

Sturridge a goal/assist per 78.375 minutes last season
                    Coutinho a goal/assist per 92.3 minutes

What's that got to do with it? Sturridge played more game time and STILL got a better goal/assist rate than Coutinho. And that includes Sturridge at Chelsea which was mainly, if not completely, from the bench.

His form reminded me a bit of Silva's 3 seasons back. Admittedly Silva took more time to find his scoring boots, but showed real signs towards the end of that season that he had found his feet; and the following season he was terrific for the first 2/3 of the season.

As with IMTHEDUDE, he was the first name on my teamsheet this year. I don't understand the argument that he's come in at 0.5 too expensive when he's likely to be involved in much of what Pool do going forward. Anyways, there's plenty of places where you can shave 0.5 across the rest of your 14 players.

Re: Sturridge, personally I don't like him much as an FPL player, he's not consistent enough. For sure he can get a hatrick away from home one week, but he's also liable to follow it up with a blank against the bottom club the following week. (cue stats from someone to prove this argument is weak 🙂 )

How can you be so sure. We have Aspas, Assaidi and Alberto who are all unknown quantities. Plus the fact that I think Downing was starting to get some of his old self back.

Henderson looking for the CAM spot too. Rogers has his work cut out keeping everyone happy.

Aspas RW most likely, or up front if Sturridge injured. Assaidi is nowhere near first choice. Alberto will likely be a super sub – definitely behind Coutinho. Downing – meh. Henderson I doubt.

                        He's ahead of all those.

In the 13 games after Coutinho arrived he made 13 appearances, 1 arriving as substitute, 8 subbed off. So 4 full games.

In those games he scored 3 times and made 5 assists (by OPTAs reckoning which is what counts this season)

In the same period Sturridge scored 7 goals and got 3 assists.

and i believe midfield scores more points goal than striker.

Is that include a Sturridge penalty? 😉

                    3*5 + 5*3 = 30pts
                    7*4 + 3*3 = 37pts

Sturridge got more fpl points + way more baps.

Yes, sorry, do penalties not count now?

And even allowing for the extra points a midfielder gets for a goal Sturridge got more points over that period (despite missing 3 games through injury) More points in less game time. Do you see how that's a good thing?

      Sturridge if/when fit.

Both could be justified once they get up and running though, as Liverpool scored bags of goals last year, don't have proper Europe to worry about and their squad has the depth of a puddle. Studge and Coutinho are about as nailed on as attacking players get in any of the top goal-scoring teams.

If fit, Sturridge will simply be top goal scorer by many goals. A perfect fit for Liverpool's style of play with one of the world's best feeders of the ball. However, will he remain fit. Coutinho will probably end on 8-10 but sturridge should surely be hitting way past 20.

Snodgrass owners - will you be looking to play him every week?

I remember last year he scored better away from home than on his own dung heap (certainly the case for a large part of the season at least). Trouble I have with the mid-priced players is I don't feel comfortable playing them every week, but at the same time they are difficult to bench as well. I prefer to rotate cheaper players and splash the cash on the big names. Of course there will be a few great value gems that emerge early on that you can jump on early like Michu, Carrol and Adam in previous years but as a starting line-up, I tend to avoid them until the dust settles a little.

Problem is you have to be patient with players like Snodgrass in order to get the most points from him.

From an aesthetic point of view that makes sense, but from an "actually scoring fantasy points" point of view it doesn't, unfortunately...

Gayle is very good in price, but £5.0 won't give you any flexibility if you want to change him in the future (i assume you already used all the £100.0), so i think £5.5 striker at least is better. 🙂

If you're going to WC early on then pick players that have the favourable fixtures. Bony's fixtures are pretty dire from the off. I plan on using my WC early, possibly the first international break at GW3 or if things are going well the second break.

The three best defensive teams for fpl, appear to be arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester city (through analysis of clean sheets, prices, nailedonness, fixtures etc) . If then, you choose two or even three defenders or goalkeepers from these sides, you'd think you're on to a winner.

However, for the first few weeks of the campaign, these sides are home at the same time, and away at the same time. (with spurs and united alternating- Chelsea have been discarded from this piece due to fixtures). This means that you could well have weeks of three clean sheets, followed by you relying on James Collins and Michael turner, etc..

Therefore- should we risk a spurs or united player? Does it matter if your clean sheets come in one flourish? Is this post absolute b*llocks? Basically, how do we negotiate these clean sheets? I'm currently thinking just go for these three sides, and miss out on CSs 1/2 the time. Any thoughts on defensive strategy?

Just go for them and there's a possibility they'd get a cs away. In the end, whether they rotate home/away makes no difference to the total points they'll score.

I'd say that is very nice. Though what is your backline and GK?

One thing about Bale over RVP is that I think Spurs and Bale will be motivated from the start. Not only make a statement for their narrow 5th place finish but also Bale to prove he is indeed a world-class player still.

Whereas, I think there will be a lot of uncertainty and some cautious play coming out of United to start the year and even more moving parts and pieces than Spurs.

But lastly, getting RVP out of your team is a much easier task and, if it were to happen, would be quite fun to use those new funds 🙂
