Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

I've played around with ideas a bit on the transfer page but not done that much. Always end up thinking that I don't have a clear picture on certain issues and won't until after the season starts and the transfer window closes.

Well only 2 British professional sprinters have ever gone under 10 seconds over 100m. They had no ball under their feet either, whilst having to constantly look up, down and around. The pitch he ran on looked about 115mSo he went box to box in a flash.

They used to do this back in the early 90s. I have had a quick look on youtube but couldnt find anything.

Would be a brilliant thing to bring back - could do it in a stadium and all proceeds go to grass roots. Perhaps 1 player from every team in the premierleague.

How likely is Figueroa to get game time on the left of midfield in this formation that Bruce has rolled out? 4.5 for OOP even though there are cheaper options for hull, notable chester, is anyone actually considering him?

So RVP is 14m with tough fixtures over first 5 weeks, and currently has 36% ownership.

Lets say he struggles at the start of the season and his ownership drops, what kind of price drop could we realistically see?

Which team dus everyone reckon will be the top scorers next season?

    1. Liverpool

Brendans gna be playing 433. Coutinho Sturridge aspas suarez stays and maybe eriksen joins us. One of the most attackin teams last year and should repeat it

    2. Manchester city

Pellegrini is attacking and he's gna go with 4222 with negredo dzeko and aguero and jovetic up top loads of goals there. Plus fans and sheik want to see more attacking foorball

    3. Arsenal

If they sign another striker they'll smash it n if they dnt girouds gna do well. Cazorlas gna score and assist and walcotts gna tear it up too. Also they're an attacking team neway

    4. Norwich

Surprise inclusion lol but I read that hughtons gna go 442 like the gd old days lmao so hooper n rvw shud get about twenty goals each cus thy got snodgrass breaking down defences

    5. Chelsea

Wud put them higher bt mourinho lvs defending lol probably got hazard and mata tracking back so wnt probably score all that many goals they'll get lukaku battering through defndes and scoring frm set pieves

    Bottom 5

    15. Manutd

Moyes is defensive and he's not won nethin

Plus rvp is old and will probly get injuted

    16. Swansea

reckon bonys gna flop and michu looked knackered last season plus they have europa

    17.Sp*rs

now gareth bales gone who's gna score lol!

    18. Stoke

    Lol need I say more

    19. Cardiff

Reckon they'll struggle away from lol plus championship jst aint as gd as premier league

    20. Sunderland

Apparently they didn't scored for ages and will be too busy trying to defend against good teams so basically every1 else in the league lmao maybe jst get a handful against promoted teams

The thing I like best here is that Moyes is slated for being defensive and his lack of trophies. Pelegrini has won as much as Moeys, likewise Rodgers. And then there is Norwich.

Coutinho is crucial for this Liverpool team though - if he plays well, Liverpool will do well, if he has an off day, then Liverpool haven't got much else to provide the something special, Gerrard can't do that every week any more.

Basically Coutinho is at least as nailed on as Gerrard, and will have a far more attacking role than Gerrard, all Stevie has going for him is penalties. Gerrard has also occasionally player CAM in preseason, to try out different midfield partnerships without him, that won't be happening in the League

I really don't Pratik. There are compelling reasons why now is bad, next summer good:

For example, I would sell to him that he goes now, he's moving into Ronnie's backyard (in terms of he's THE man)- go next summer, Ronnie might be sold, better chance it being Bale's backyard. As Moddy showed, going there as one of the 'good' players doesn't guarantee game time or favourable tactics. Going there as 'THE man' will.

I also think there is a perception (incorrect to me) that Bale has only 'done it' for one season. A second like last... puts doubters in their place.

The 'once in a lifetime' pitch sounds like cobblers. Why would RM not be interested just the same next summer if Blae puts up the numbers/performances again? Also, another season like last culd open door to other options (MU, Barca, Bayern?). He's reported to love RM, but how really knows.

From Spurs point of view, we'll get close to record bid either now or next summer, so no rush. Obviously, one more season, poss CL for 2014/15, and more time to plan how best to use Bale funds.

I can see these arguments being put to Bale and him 'getting it'.

Still, what do I know, I don't write for the Daily Mail! 🙂

I will give the other point of view as a Spurs fan.....

I don't see Bale extending his contract, so he's just gonna have 2 years left in his contract. So despite a good performance this year, not sure if his value can even rise. What I do feel is that if the deal was done next summer, we could go into more structured planning on how to distribute the money.

Yet, Coentrao + 85million pound is a massive amount of money. Along with selling some deadwood in the team, we could raise a little more money. If we quickly re-invest the money in transfers we could honestly end up with a superb team.

Still, what do I know, I am not Daniel Levy. 🙂

Pratik, any chatter about RM players being thrown in looks a massive red herring... no way I can see Coentrao/DiMaria accepting a 'Lane' move, nor any others.

If it happens, now or next summer, it'll be a straight cash deal, with a % paid over time.

That leaves us with whom to chase? Within reason, all the money in the world won't get true world class players to The Lane while we're out of CL. Bale goes now, I'd hope AVB/Baldini/Levy take a serious look at Mirallas/Moses, both have potential in wide attack, both realistic targets for Spurs.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that though, eh.

Lambert will be on pens and free kicks. How much £ edge do you think that should equate to? I think they will play together this year, Lallana and Ramirez (or Puncheon) left and right, Wanyama and Schneiderlin sat in front of the back 4

Agreed. Rodriguez lacks Lambert's consistency. The latter is on pens and free-kicks and also got a goal and assist against top quality opposition in Besiktas.

Plus, if you go with Lambert, that gives you the budget to swap for Hooper, RVW, Jelavic, Kone, Berbatov, Aspas, Dzeko etc. if one of those guys explodes early on. Your options are very limited if Rodriguez struggles and you only have 6m to play with.

Laters, my instinct is that the upside potential is firmly with JRod. Be tough for Lambo to go better than last season, IMO, whereas more consistent starts for JRod could deliver much better points.

Don't know pre-season detail, but not sure it's terribly important anyway, only injury news is relevant to me, give or take, at this stage.

Have experimented with players/formations so far in pre season. Last couple should give more of an insight into how Poch will approach the start of the season.

I think its £1.5m vs Pens and set pieces

        Cech vs Mignolet

There's not a lot of love for Cech on here, which I find odd as he's the only truly 'nailed on' Chelsea defensive option. Chelsea defenders are all 6/6.5, not half as nailed on and cause a nightmare with defensive rotations. Even if we know Mourinho's 1st eleven it'll be a lottery to pick the defender that plays all 180 minutes with their fixture mash and international friendlies.
Cech's easy to rotate with say Boruc, which I know breaks golden rules of many by spending so much at the back, but if you have toure instead of mignolet for Liverpool cover that saves a 0.5 too.

For example many on here prefer Mignolet:

        Cech + Boruc/Mannone/Adrian/Robles + Toure 16m
        Mignolet + 4.5 + Luiz/Terry = 16/16.5m

Just my rookie way of thinking 🙂 ..

I disagree, from 6.5 you can get whoever you want. Cech could also have a terrible DGW and not suffer a price drop, whereas any chosen defender that plays the full 180 minutes may go down in value.

I get what you're saying but I think it's the idea of using a FT on a GK in GW2/GW3 that puts people off.

An unnecessary risk I reckon, in Mourinho's formation will the wing backs have much chance to get forward, I don't reckon. Terry from set pieces maybe

No idea until I see how he's actually going to play. Haven't been able to catch any of the pre-season games, just seen some highlights. I see your point with getting Cech for security though, but there's some sort of mental block against transferring keepers. I'll mull it over though, it does give you an advantage of easier benching in GW3.

I think ultimately Dzeko will be a substitute at best. Defoe could be a decent differential for first 6 Gameweeks, but arrival of Soldado may cloud things. Good defence, maybe too good. I also think you may regret no Hazard or Bale. Captaincy choice may be the bain of your FPL existence!

Seen a bit of chat recently about whether Pellegrini's "more attacking style" will allow Toure to roam forwards more this year. I've got bored of constantly moving Bale/RVP in and out of my team, so am now trying to focus on specific bits of research which might help me: the first of which is how Pellegrini works as a manager.

As far as Toure goes I'm not sure it's so simple as "Pellegrini is more attacking than Mancini, ergo Toure will be more attacking under Pellegrini." For one thing, despite arguably producing more exciting football, Pellegrini really isn't a 'we'll score more than we concede' kind of manager - a solid defensive structure is important to him.

One thing which might affect Toure specifically is that Pellegrini likes to get his fullbacks to go forward to provide width. In turn this means that his defensive midfielders will often be tasked with covering for them, possibly curtailing their attacking instincts.

The final thing I'd mention is Fernandinho. He's a similar kind of player to Toure and if played together I'd expect one of them to sit back while the other bombs forward - they'd presumably take this in turns during a match, but it does mean that Toure is no longer the only one playing that box-to-box role. The worst case scenario is that Toure actually gets rotated more under Pellegrini, with Fernandinho, Garcia and Barry all capable of filling that DM spot.

Nice post. I feel the City team is a bit unbalanced at the moment though, if Navas plays on the right he's an absolute winger. If Silva/Aguero play on the left they won't stay wide, they'll play much more narrow. You think Navas might play narrower to allow Zaba to overlap? Or will Silva/Aguero be told to play wider?

The attacking positions are very difficult to call. Pellegrini seems to be a very flexible manager, not scared of changing formations according to opponent or indeed within games. I think he'll be expecting Navas and Silva (and probably Aguero and Jovetic too) to vary between being more central and playing wider.
Truth be told though, my guess is as good as yours: they're going to be an interesting side to watch either way!

If Pellegrini is worth anything he will totally chuck out all historical managment and take a fresh look at every player in his squad on the training ground....Prices paid for players and reputations from two seasons ago should mean nothing compared to the evidence of his own eyes...If that is true...and i suspect it is... then the team at City is probably the hardest to predict given the sheer number of good players they have...
