Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Tuesday

Papiss Cisse helps fire Newcastle to victory in his first appearance of the summer. Cardiff fall to defeat at Brentford, though Kim Bo-Kyung impresses with a goal and assist, Chris Hughton admits Seb Bassong may struggle to make the start of the season after undergoing minor surgery over the summer, Roberto Martinez discusses tactics, while Michael Kightly and Brek Shea grab a goal apiece as Stoke finish their US tour with a win:

St Mirren 0 Newcastle 2
Alan Pardew named a strong starting line-up for the trip to Paisley. The Magpies moved to a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa partnering Fabricio Coloccini at centre-half, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi were handed the flank roles as Papiss Cisse made his first appearance of the summer after resolving his dispute with the club. The Senegal striker needed just 19 minutes to make his mark, firing home thanks to an Ameobi assist before Mathieu Debuchy notched the second before the half-hour mark, with Vernun Anita supplying the final pass. Both Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye were given the night off as Pardew rang the changes as the second period progressed, making eight alterations in total as he continues to utilise the depth of his squad in order to boost match-fitness.

After the game, Pardew revealed he’s expecting progress to be made over the next few days as the club step up their search for a new forward. The Magpies have been linked with Darren Bent, Loic Remy and Bafetimbi Gomis over the past few weeks but, as yet, no deals have come to fruition – a situation their manager reckons will be resolved as he looks to rectify his side’s meagre 45-goal haul in the previous campaign:

“I’m hoping something happens before the Rangers friendly. I think that’s a realistic deadline for my team in the background to hopefully get something done. All I would say is that we’re keeping our options open regarding strikers because we can only do a deal that’s right. If a deal’s right we’ll do it, if a deal’s not right we won’t do it. You can only be as confident as the feeling that you’re getting and the feeling I’m getting at the moment is we’re pursuing and at the end of the day we’ll get something.”

Brentford 3 Cardiff 2
The Bluebirds fell to their first defeat in three pre-season matches yesterday evening. Worryingly for Cardiff, Malky Mackay fielded what many feel will be his first-choice back-four next term, with John Brayford making his first start at right-back alongside Ben Turner, Mark Hudson and Andrew Taylor, though Brayford and Taylor were amongst several second-half changes late on. Further up the pitch, Mackay omitted new boy Andreas Cornelius from the squad and handed Fraizer Campbell the lone striker role, with Craig Bellamy and Craig Noone on the flanks. Once again, though, it was Kim Bo-Kyung who was the Welsh outfit’s main man – the midfielder scored for the second successive match and also provided the assist for Campbell to fire the visitors two in front before Brentford clinched victory with an impressive comeback.

After the match, the Cardiff boss admitted he was keen to bring more new additions to the squad, though refused to confirm reports linking him with a loan move for Steven Caulker. The Tottenham man’s potential arrival may raise question marks over the starting roles of Turner and Hudson, with the former perhaps the likeliest to make way should the deal transpire:

“The group we have are at the fitness level we expect them to be at, so that’s important. but at the same time I still need to add two or three players. We’ve got various plates spinning. We’re working hard on it but they’ve got to come in and add to this group. We’re looking at good players to come in and we’re trying to improve in all areas.”

Brighton 1 Norwich 1
The Canaries recovered from back-to-back 1-0 losses to register a draw at the Amex Stadium last night. Chris Hughton handed new boys such as Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer starting roles, while Nathan Redmond was selected in the first XI for the fourth match in a row. Redmond supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s goal in a game that saw Gary Hooper make his Norwich debut after climbing off the bench to replace Fer with half an hour remaining.

Hughton – who made six second-half changes – was without many of his first-choice players for the clash, though, as Seb Bassong, Michael Turner, Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington all missed out. After the game, the Canaries boss explained the quartet’s absence and admitted Bassong may struggle to make the season opener against Everton, though refuted the recent speculation linking Snodgrass with a move to West Ham:

““It is very, very simple and I can set the record straight. It is a family issue. If he (Snodgrass) is not with us at Cambridge United then definitely at Braga. Any speculation is wide of the mark. It is a personal family issue and we look forward to seeing him again later this week….We’re hoping that Michael will play some part on Friday (against Braga). He is closer than Seb. Seb is maybe a week or two behind him. It is going to be very, very tight whether he makes the start of the season or not. We’re disappointed that we haven’t had them for the bulk of pre-season. Seb and Michael both had small operations in the summer and they are a little bit behind the rest. Pilks has got a slight knee problem but he will be fine. He has missed this game and he will probably miss Friday as well.”

Philadelphia Union 0 Stoke 2

Mark Hughes shuffled his pack and made seven changes for the final match of Stoke’s US tour. At the back, the Potters boss handed Marc Muniesa and Ryan Shotton the full-back roles and gave Thomas Sorensen a rare start in goal, while further up the pitch Michael Kightly and Brek Shea patrolled the flanks, with Marc Wilson afforded a start in central midfield as Cameron Jerome led the line in a 4-5-1. The two wingers played a pivotal part in the victory, grabbing a goal apiece, while Kightly also supplied the assist for Shea’s strike in a comfortable win. Hughes made a number of alterations after the break and introduced Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones as he moved to a 4-4-2 but the visitors were unable to find the net again.

Stoke suffered an injury blow midway through the game after Shea was forced off following a rash challenge and according to his manager, the US international looks likely to miss the start of the new campaign. A livid Hughes spoke to the club’s official website as he awaits a clearer prognosis:

“It’s incredibly frustrating and hugely disappointing to lose Brek, especially in a game like this where you would expect players to look after their fellow professionals. I really have no idea what the lad was thinking about by going in for the challenge like that. Maybe he was trying to make a name for himself, I have no idea, but whatever he was thinking it was totally wrong. We have been waiting a while to get Brek back here, and up until the injury he looked very bright, very dangerous and appeared to have a real understanding of what his role was on the left hand side of midfield. He will go for a scan tomorrow, but we know that we will definitely be without him for a number of weeks. It looks fairly serious, but fingers crossed it isn’t anymore serious than we already know it is.”

In Other News
Roberto Martinez took time out to discuss his tactical plans for the season ahead the other day. The new Everton boss has mainly utilised a 4-3-3 formation since arriving on Merseyside but reports in the local press indicate he trialled a three-man backline midway through the weekend win at Blackburn, with a defence comprised of Sylvain Distin, Johnny Heitinga and John Stones allowing the Toffees to move to the 3-4-3 shape Martinez preferred at former club Wigan.

The Spaniard admitted post-match that due to the numerous options available in his first-team squad, he’s unlikely to stick to just one set formation for the campaign ahead – a suggestion that we cannot be guaranteed the likes of Seamus Coleman will be fielded as an out of position midfielder every weekend:

“I don’t want to be a team that can only play in one way and to do that you need to experiment and try things in pre-season. This is about making ourselves a bit more expansive in terms of how we play and that is going to be a real strength for us. I want the players to be flexible and take on many different systems. You can see that certain players are suited to certain systems and I think it is about picking the right time and moment to use those players in those systems.”

Martinez also rolled out an update on Antolin Alcaraz, after the Paraguayan was omitted from Everton’s US tour due to a hamstring injury. The Toffees boss expects the defender to be back in training prior to the start of the season, with the problem deemed not too serious:

“Antolin will be out for a couple of weeks, I wouldn’t expect any more than that. It was more beneficial for him to work at Finch Farm so we can make sure we get him fully fit as soon as we can.”

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted Matija Nastasic requires further tests on the ankle injury sustained against Sunderland in Hong Kong last week. City were expected to find out the full prognosis of the central defender’s problem earlier this week after he was stretchered off in the 1-0 win over the Black Cats but with the situation still unclear, the Chilean was a little downbeat in his assessment:

“We will have to wait to find out how serious the injury to Nastasic is. At this moment, we don’t know whether he needs an operation or if there is another solution but I have a lot of players that I can rely on. There are enough players who can come in to replace any that are missing.”

While the news could promote the likes of Joleon Lescott or Micah Richards as a potential partner for Vincent Kompany, a length of absence may force Pellegrini into the transfer market again. Reports in Italy suggest the agent of Cagliari’s Davide Astori is already in talks with the Etihad club, while the new City boss may renew his interest in Real Madrid’s Pepe, having been linked with the Portuguese player all summer.

Young player, even plays for England u20. I thought he would be loaned out this season but he hasn't been and is playing a role in Martinez's squads. If Heitinga is sold (likely) Stones will be able to compete for a place in the back 3. If he hasn't been loaned then Martinez must have plans...

I suggest keeping Lukaku for the first gameweek since it is a double. We don't know whether he'll play both games but its a better risk than Sturridge since Sturridge is injured and also lacking in match fitness

Something I don't understand, we moan when there are a lack of quality options in positions and we moan about rotation. I'm seeing a lot of comments about wanting Bale to go, why?

I get that he's expensive and freeing up the funds allows a 'nicer looking team' but the guy is fantasy gold. Fixture proof, better PPG last season than RVP and absolutely nailed on.

Well said. Having Bale means there's someone in your team you never need to transfer out unless he's injured. With Hazard/Walcott there'll be a period this season where people doubt them and get rid.

How boring is that, I would much rather prefer things being more complicated and having to take punts. With Bale you just have to have him and, that takes a bit of skill out of the game.

Don't agree with that. If there are no 12m+ players worth having then you can easily have loads of big hitting mids/attackers around the 9.5m mark. While they may not be as good or consistent as Bale they are certainly not punts. Being almost forced to have a 12m player leaves you taking punts on 6-7m mids/attackers. It can limit you to a choice between Hazard and Walcott whereas without Bale in the picture you can get both.

Good point from you too, but I still think there will be more differentiated teams with little or no big hitters. As there will be a low amount of mid priced guys who will perform over the season, but all the 9-10.5 mids will do the jobs in different times so rotating them will be a job as well. that extra cash will also help out your defense as well.

I just think not having those big hitters would mess up some strategies big time and force even great fantasy managers to rething their plans.

Of course it depends how you use the funds over the team but if Bale and RVP were out of the picture it would be very easy to have a midfield like say:

Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, 4.5m bench

The 4 big names may all have quiet spells but, without many alternatives (aside from Michu, the only others in that range play for the same clubs as the mid I've mentioned above) would you really sell them. You could just sit on them and wait for the points to come.

If you have Bale and RVP maybe you can only afford this midfield:

Bale, Hazard, Nolan, Snodgrass, 4.5m bench

Now, in this example Bale stays in the team barring injury/suspension. If Hazard is getting 2 points frequently you have a problem, do you switch to an in-form Walcott/Michu or another big hitting mid? You do this only to watch Hazard get a monster haul and you're new in form midfielder get 2 points. Then there's the 2 mid priced midfielders who we know aren't going to perform well all season and will need transfers to the latest 6.5m mid with good form/fixtures.

In purely Fantasy Football Terms (I struggle to see how any fan of the premier league would want Bale to leave, unless you were an Arsenal fan perhaps 😉 ) it's much better if he stays because the debate of RVP vs Bale is a good one and people are split into distinct camps already: those with just bale, those with just RVP, and those with both. Taking Bale out is not only going to reduce that to just two, but skew things very heavily in favour of RVP.

I much prefer to take part in something which favours taking chances and going on the offensive, even if perserverance and research are allied with blind luck. Much more rewarding than playing it safely and conservatively. In short, having Bale forces people to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to selecting teams.

So, is anyone else seriously considering Chadli?

His stats look cracking for a midfielder - I know it's the Dutch league but 53 goals in 170-odd games has got to be worth something? I'm sure there'd be a healthy number of assist too....

I can see him getting game time even if Bale stays unless Spurs can't get a couple of decent strikers on board in the next few weeks. If they sell Bale, you would imagine they'd go nuts up front, but Chadli would get game time in this scenario by virtue of being an attacking midfielder.

Are there any comments from AVB on his plans for Chadli?

He will get game time regardless. He's a fast attacker that can run with the ball and play anywhere across the forward 3. Could get debut off bench vs CPL, most likely Lennon/Bale/Soldado or Ade to be front 3 in that game.

Prob won't start vs Hull, Spain away in Equador. Mourinho has warned of this already, poss no Azpil, Mata, Torres.

I'm only looking at DGW, won't have expensive CGHE Defs long-term.

It depends if Dzeko will be playing. I don't see Dzeko and Negredo being partnered up top as they are too similar.

Likelihood is 4-2-3-1 with Dzeko/Negredo up top and Jovetic/Silva/Navas supporting. Or when he plays 4-4-2 then Aguero + Dzeko/Negredo/Jovetic.

It's anyone's guess at this point though.

Does it create more diversity though? Agreed on the captaincy point but the most expensive players like Bale and RVP put limitations on the other big hitters you can get. You might want Hazard and Walcott but because of Bale you're forced to choose just one of them and fill the other slot with one of many 6-7m players.

Thought for the day: why do we ever believe anything a manager says? They have literally nothing to gain by being open and honest about line-ups, tactics, transfers or really much else.

If you had a player who was mainly going to be a squad player for the season, would you come out and say "yeah, he's not as good as the 20m guy I've just signed, but you've gotta have a back-up" or would you say "he's a fantastic player, it's great to have competition in that position."

If you were trying to offload a player for as much money as possible, would you say "I'm open to offers, frankly I've got my eye on a replacement already" or would you say "he's going nowhere, he's an important member of the team."

The obvious recent example is Pellegrini's comments about Dzeko, but there are numerous others, Mourinho on Luiz is another... In a different vein, I bitterly remember Fergie (the Master at this sort of thing) talking up Johnny Evans massively, shortly before rotating him for about 5 weeks in a row last year.

In a nutshell: be very, very wary of basing decisions on something a manager says, or is reported to have said.

In Mancini's defence, Aguero picked up quite a nasty knock at the beginning and his season was rather injury riddled.

There was someone on here who used to write Physio articles about injuries and recovery times, it made for excellent reading. Does anyone know what happened to them? They were extremely detailed so I'd wager it became too much of a time commitment for the author.

A manager saying something is much better than him saying nothing and guessing what he is thinking. Especially for the first gw we are in the blind it relates to lineups so if a manager gives and indication he sees a player as can key feature this season it's good info to start the season with. After if the player is rotated then we can assess.

Its difficult for the manager. He can't just come out and say "Dzeko is my 4th choice striker, I'll sell the donkey if a decent offer comes in." They have to put a positive spin on everything about the club, that it could mislead journalists or FPL managers isn't a concern.

They're the same quotes that have been posted over and over, and the source of all this Dzeko talk.

      Not buying it.

      (a) They're all based on a translation in an Australian paper from something he said in Spanish. The original, untranslated quotes aren't anywhere to be found.
      (b) Assuming the gist of what he said is correct, it still doesn't mean anything. Managers say a lot of things, not always with the intention of enabling us to pick the right player for our fantasy teams.

Does everyone find it difficult to balance their squad with home and away players?? No matter what I do, I seem to end up with almost all (H) players for the first gameweek. All the top teams have good fixtures!

I spent hours writing an article about Tottenham Hotspur and it didn't go green. I got lots of minus ratings and noone discussed it other than two people. So I will not waste my time doing something long again. Nice and short.

I think Norwich are going to play 4-3-3 they will probably sign another striker and have him and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel on either side of Gary Hooper. Robert Snodgrass will play in the hole. He is their best player and you cannot play him well in a 4-4-2. Something I learnt on my coaching course.

If they're going for a 4-3-3 then they might opt for Pilkington as one of the winger strikers (thats what I would do anyway if I was the manager of Norwich 😉 )

Perhaps it was poorly written, poorly research guff, Maxi. Have you considered the possibility?

Fair enough about NOR, but I'm not quite buying Hughton changing his spots. Built his rep at NEW by getting their Def solid, did much the same last season at NOR. Despite RvW/Hooper buys, I don't see NOR as big scorers this season.

4-4-2 is a classic british formation but it does not work against 4 2 3 1. Hughton is defensive so he might go for a 343 too.

I should mention my coaching qualifications more then people would treat my posts seriously.

And yes christina I fixed my email. Also here is my last article

http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=8#hc_comment_5131969 so no it wasn't poorly researched guff of whatever you are calling it. It took a very long time to make.

Non-FPL related, but if you're due to start a job at the beginning of September is it right to put the job on your LinkedIn profile now or should you wait until you start?

IT's like this most off-season, JT's Dog. Remember the RvP saga last summer, or Fab/Nasri year before. They're just the ones that spring to mind, were others.

It's part of the fun, unless it's Bale related, in which case its outrageous tapping up 🙂

Is anyone actually 100% happy with their team, if FPL began tomorrow?

If you are 100% happy, what is your team looking like? I have tried a dozen options and can't pick one.

If FPL started tomorrow I would happily go with :-

            Boruc (Mannone)
            Coleman Collins Cole (Chester M.Turner)
Walcott Hazard (c) Mirallas Snodgrass (Thomas)
            RVP Aspas Lukaku

            Currently happy

            Foster - Boruc
            A.Cole - Clyne - Turner - Collins - Chester
            Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Mirallas - Snodgrass
            Lukaku - Aspas - Gayle

            £4.5M in the bank

            GW1 - Cole -> Yanga
            GW2 - Lukaku - > RVP
            GW3 - Aspas -> Berba

Just gonna sit back and relax until I have a clearer picture of how teams will look immediatly prior to start of season. If you ain't happy with the options out there now, you will be less soon when numerous additions arrive to teams, plus ones that will leave.

So what are you saying? We shouldn't place too much faith in Liverpool against Stoke due to the randomness of opening day fixtures? I' still wish to double up, but wouldn't regret it if they conceded as on paper it's the right decision.
