Pre-Season

Friendlies Round Up – Wednesday

David Silva gets amongst the goals and Edin Dzeko is at the double as City hit Milan for five in yesterday’s Audi Cup clash. Christian Benteke takes his tally to four in two starts as Villa net five for the second match in succession, while Kevin Mirallas notches once again for Everton as Roberto Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 against Italian giants Juventus.

Man City 5 Milan 3
Manuel Pellegrini’s side gave Fantasy managers a hint at what may potentially follow in the season ahead with a scintillating display against their Serie A opponents yesterday evening. Stevan Jovetic was handed his first start since joining from Fiorentina in the summer and was named in the first XI alongside the likes of Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Jesus Navas, while Javi Garcia and Joleon Lescott were afforded a chance to impress at centre-half in light of Matija Nastasic’s enforced absence.

Jovetic needed just three minutes to make an impact after teeing up Silva for the opener before full-backs Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov added further strikes, with Jovetic once again claiming an assist for the latter’s goal. Edin Dzeko continued his strong form by bagging a brace – with Navas and Yaya Toure providing an assist apiece – to take his tally to four in the last three matches.

Pellegrini made five alterations after the break, swapping Jovetic for Alvaro Negredo at half-time, but his side failed to find the net again. Sergio Aguero was named on the bench after a recent injury but was an unused sub alongside the like of Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta.

Dzeko’s form and upturn in confidence is already clear under the new manager after an indifferent period with Roberto Mancini in charge. Pellegrini’s show of faith at the pre-match press conference will not only have been music to the Bosnian’s ears but will surely pique the interest of Fantasy managers, given his relatively budget-friendly appeal as a route into the City attack ahead of a kind run of opening fixtures:

“The future of Dzeko has been decided a long time ago. He’s a top striker and a starter and he will have a high level of performance like he did all the years he played in Germany. I have confidence in him and the players who came in are only support for a squad that needs to have every place doubled up with top players. So there is no problem with the future of Dzeko.”

Post-match, the City boss called for his side to improve defensively after they almost let slip a five-goal lead against Milan. City arrived at yesterday’s game having previously registered back-to-back clean sheets but Pellegrini seemed none-too-impressed with the resilience of what was, essentially, his second-choice back-four:

“It’s not normal that we can be beating Milan 5-0 after 30 minutes. But I didn’t like the last 15 minutes of the first half because I thought we relaxed before the end of the game and in football you can’t do that. It’s better that this happens now though rather than in the Premier League so we can sort out these things before it starts.”

Walsall 0 Aston Villa 5
Paul Lambert’s side hit five for the second successive match as they pick up pace ahead of the season kick-off. The Villa boss rolled out first-choice forwards Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann in the front three, while Antonio Luna continues to look assured of his role at left-back after being named in the starting XI once again. With the visitors two goals to the good at the break thanks to strikes from Fabian Delph and Agbonlahor, Lambert made seven alterations to his line-up though afforded his front three until the hour mark before subbing them off. This gave Benteke enough time to notch his fourth goal in the last couple of matches – courtesy of a Weimann assist – before Jack Grealish and Gary Gardner completed the scoring late on.

With 10 goals in the last couple of games – albeit against lower league opposition – Lambert praised his charges as they gear up for a double Gameweek 1 away to Arsenal and Chelsea. The Villa boss also rolled out an injury update on a couple of new boys, going on to say:

“We play a passing game and we’re getting better and better. We definitely have goals in us, that’s for sure. It’s important if you can spread the goals around the team too, which we did. It could have been more. We were very good. It was pleasing that we kept a clean sheet too. We were solid throughout. We looked really good. The good thing was we were pressing throughout the game. We are getting better and better. There are a few weeks to go and it’s all about that Arsenal game….Hopefully Aleksandar (Tonev) and Jores (Okore) will maybe train Friday and then we will see how they are for the game. They are two big players for us who will hopefully come back shortly. Next up is Shamrock Rovers. We want to get more minutes under the belts of the players and hopefully get no injuries. Then there’s one more after that.”

Prior to the game, summer signing Luna spoke of his determination to nail down the left-back role this term. The former Sevilla man – who was the only Villa player to be handed the full 90 minutes last night – also started the previous match against Crewe and continues to look a cut-price alternative to Matthew Lowton for those looking for a cheap route the Villa defence, with a Sky Sports price of 4.0, compared to Lowton’s 5.7, particularly appealing:

“I feel I have the characteristics to play here. I think I have good athletic abilities – I am quick as a player and that is important in a division like the Premier League. But I believe it’s good for me. Training has helped massively too, it is very intense and great fun. All the ball work is intense but it’s really, really enjoyable. It’s so, so fun. Football here in England is very quick, very rapid. It’s a complicated league. For my own view, regarding my skills, it’s great that this league is fast. I still need to adapt to things, of course, and feel I am all the time.”

Juventus 1 Everton 1 (5-6 pens)
Roberto Martinez started with a 3-4-3 system for the first time this summer as the Toffees edged out the Serie A champions on spot-kicks. Leighton Baines recovered from a slight knock to take his place on the left of midfield, with Seamus Coleman fielded on the right and Marouane Fellaini and Darron Gibson in the centre. Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar once again got the nod for the flank roles in the front three, though Martinez handed Victor Anichebe the chance to lead the line, having afforded Arouna Kone and Nikica Jelavic 45 minutes apiece in the weekend win at Blackburn. Mirallas – yet again – was Everton’s goal hero and continues to flourish in his new position, having scored for the third match in a row.

After the game, though, it was youngster John Stones who Martinez singled out. With Antolin Alcaraz omitted from the tour due to a hamstring injury, Stones was fielded in the back-three alongside Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin and impressed throughout, heading against the post earlier on before coolly converting a chipped sudden-death spot-kick in an assured performance:

“I knew he was going to do it because the last three he has taken in training he has done that. The question was could he do it after Andrea Pirlo and at his age. It was incredible and I thought it was an example of his performance. He was composed throughout and it was a very useful game for himself and (he could be) a very important ‘new’ player for us going forward.”

        Fair doos 😉

Too many gambles really. Although I think Benteke is top value still. Sturridge's fitness will determine whether he'll be in there.

If Dzeko is a starter this season his value is indoubtable but I have to agree I don't like the competition for places.

Pick a 4.0 gk with less percentage ownerhip. Given is going to fall in price.
Again garrido might not starts and is less attacking than turner., its boring I know.
The rest looks solid. No Chelsea triple up however. Maybe try and sneak in lukaku.

If you had 2 million "in the bank" after building a team you like in FPL would you keep them for future use(a higher priced players starts doing great) or will you spend it getting defs of top6 sides???

    P. S. the team am talking about doesn't have bale or rvp.

Bale not gone, may not go, so £2m would help get vital player assuming he stays. RvP isn't necessary from the off. If you're happy, stick in bank, you've probably got a CHE player or 3, will come in handy to shuffle those over early GWs.

It seems a risky approach to take as you would have to assume all the 100m teams will have a better side than you going into the season so you will be using that 2m to play catch up. I think either spend a little extra to upgrade a couple of players or admit you need to squeeze RVP in there!

A £100m team isn't necessarily better than one worth £98m. It's a judgement call, if the cheaper players score more, they are the better ones to have.

Depends on the team (ie. what you can potentially do with that 2m), but it isn't a terrible idea to start the season with some money saved. It gives you flexibility when you need it most.

    Mignolet, 4.0

    Luiz, Coleman, Collins, Turner, Chester

    Hazard, Walcott, Mirallas, Snodgras, Jarvis

    RVP, Lukaku, Anelka

What do ye think? I'm wary of having any City players at the start, and will wait to see what happens.
Will prob transfer out Lukaku to Stuuridge so as to have Liverpool coverage and Luiz to Mertesacker. I can the do Anelka to JROD/ Ruiz.

Not an Everton fan but I would think their first choice line-up would be:

      ------------------------Howard

      ----------Mirralas --- Kone --- Pineaar

      I'd go with this.

      Howard

      Jags hietinga distin

      Coleman Fellaini Gibson Baines

      Barkley jelavic mirallas.

I wouldn't take much notice of that though because nobody really knows

Really really hard to answer because of the new manager. I would say the nailed on starters are:

Howard, Coleman, Jags, Baines, Gibson, Felli, Mirallas, Pienaar

Likely starts are Osman, Kone, Jelavic, Barkley, Distin,

Other players in squad likely to feature at some point are Deulofeu, Vellios, Alcaraz, Stones, Naismith, Anichebe.

But to be honest I am guessing as I don't know the system Martinez will favour. The line up verus Juve was: Everton
Howard Baines Stones Jagielka Gibson Distin Mirallas Pienaar Coleman Fellaini Anichebe

I think that is pretty close to the XI with Alcaraz & Kone to feature (one is injured other is fasting so isn't completely fit to play).

Great new look for the site. Good job. So this is my first attempt at this seasons starting team. How does this look? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Mignolet/Boruc
    Luiz/Kompany/Toure/Mertesacker (Turner)
    Hazard/Bale/Coutino/Zaha (Garvan)
    Benteke/Rodriguez (Maynard)

1mil in the bank. Still a toss up up between Bale and RVP. If Bale leaves looking to do Bale+Benteke>Lampard+RVP. Also not sure of Turner now that Caulker transferred.

    Any suggestions?

        Sorry, reply fail above.

For me, too much £££s in Def. 1X CHE Def plus one of Komp/Merte/Toure and £4m-£4.5m other 3, attacking players typically outscore defensives over the season.

Maynard looks horrible, I would want two very decent strikers, then a poss cheaper third, not two cheapies, that's too risky. Also Zaha might be too early. Tough fixs at start season, Moyes will go optimal to stay close to MC/CHE/TOT/ARSE etc, think he's a lad well worth watching, but I don't see him getting many starts early.

        Hope that helps a little.

Yeah, Nani has clear potential but, like Citeh/Chelski, there's little clear steer on starts. I will monitor early GWs, see who's starting, who's off bench etc, make judgement calls as wI go.

    SKY PLAYERS

From the horse's mouth, here's the confirmation you can have more than 2 captains a week.

"If your captain was already playing on Saturday, you could then change the captaincy using a captaincy change before the earliest scheduled kick off on Sunday and also score double points for your captain on the Sunday. This would use up your one available captaincy change for that respective game week and any further captaincy changes you try to make in that game week will only become effective from the start of the following game week.

However, if you use a transfer to remove your captain, the incoming player will replace him as captain and this will not use up the one captaincy change that is allowed for the game week. For example, if you had your existing captain already play! ing on a Saturday, he would score double points on that day. Y! ou could then transfer him out for a game on Sunday, before the earliest Premier League game played on the Sunday, and the incoming player taking over as captain would score double points. You could then use your weekly captaincy change to change the captain for a game on Monday and score double points again for 3 seperate players. "

He is great and first choice. However he's carrying a knock and we've just offered chambers a 4 year deal and he's started every pre season game and shone whilst Clyne has been on the sidelines. If clyne is if he plays, but shaw is fit and has very limited competition so at this moment is more nailed on....... They cost the same so why take the risk.

Weimann might get you a couple of points GW1. But with tough fixtures and him not being the most lethal striker in the club, I reckon you'll be looking for a way out pretty soon.

I like both Dzeko and Lukaku as picks, but still not entirely convinced by their playing time.

Whats your thoughts on Jarvis this season, especially the first gameweeks? He seems to be in good form in pre-season, and to me he seems like a bargain at 5.5.
Seeing the horrible away form that West Ham had last year, im thinking Ramirez + Jarvis might be a goodalue combo.

The best thing would be to have those two performing well and putting in Koren, but i fear that would make my midfield too weak, even if it means i get RvP.

I like the Jarvis pick myself. Lots of crosses las year, when he finds some form he could be an assist-machine. Good rotation with Southampton/Hull as well, so looking at a Koren/Jarvis-combo at the moment.

Levy is canny, he will buy before he sells...... You go to market when you've just received $80mil for bale and Soldado suddenly costs $35m+

Pah, hardly. Levy is canny but he's also notorious for last min deals (see last season's Demps, Ade after flogging Moddy). A striker was on the cards regardless of Bale, so Soldado joining makes no difference to Bale's future.

No, not linked imo. Spurs have needed a new striker for years now, they have finally made their move. Bale will still probably be sold though.

I don't think they are linked but I am not sure spurs would have spent 25 million + on soldado had the spurs deal not been around.

      Bales going anyway
      - Real Madrid
      - World Record transfer fee
      - No Champions League for Spurs
      - Spurs have never made a title challenge

He MUST go, it would defy all logic if he does not.
But Spurs must get part-ex on some Real players as they will not be able to find the quality is available elsewhere

Can just imagine how DiMaria/Conetrao will feel about forced Lane switch. Can also imagine regular and lengthly 'injuries' to both if they were to come, which won't happen.

If it happens, straight cash deal, but remains big IF.

I think there can be a line drawn between the two. Spurs will want to make sure they have all their business tied up before confirming income of around €100m.

Now that they've got their man, along with some other signings to strengthen the side (Chadli and Paulinho), I'd expect the move to gather pace.

    Hypothetical Bale scented quandary.
Ok, 16 days to go until our lives get a little better (or worse depending on scores). The likelihood is that Bale will be gone way before the new campaign starts, but lets just say he doesn't go by the 17th but almost all the paper work is signed but he can still play for Spurs.
Given that he has such a high price tag and the fact that the money could be spent elsewhere to even out your team, do you just not include him (or get RvP)?
The thought being that if you do still include him and he goes after 2 game weeks you'll have to do a lot of tinkering all over the park to get the team you might have chosen before. Will we see a sharp spike in early wildcards and is it worth it? Should fantasy managers just slowly spread out the extra wealth week by week? Or will there be more hits than a piñata at a Mexican baseball convention?
If you decide to not go with him from the beginning, there is of course a risk. It's easy to say that when a player is about to sign for another club his head will not be in the game, but I don't think this applies so much to such a professional as Bale certainly is. I think he would still play to his best abilities (assuming he gets picked) and could rack up some major points leaving those who haven't risked him getting left behind.
The decision would be made ever harder if we haven't received much information, the fact that a bid for £80M+ was made and the news came a week after it actually happened, shows that some things relating to Real Madrid can be at least a little secretive. Tottenham have still not accepted a bid (or have they?), they're just letting him talk with Madrid. So if no bid has been formally accepted by the club in 2 weeks time what is everyone going to do?
So who's bailing on him already?

      get him out
consider Soldado for the front 3 and Paulinho / Chadli for mid-price differentials and Kaboul as the cheapest route into the Spurs back line or Walker as an premium defender also with differential potential.

      that is all

If he starts for Spurs in GW1, he's in my team. Captain material for a start and when you transfer him out then you've got at least 2.0 to instantly upgrade another (so it's a 4 point hit at worst).

Lots have bailed on Bale, but not me. He's in my team if he's a Spurs player come GW1, simple as that, bar obvious injuries. I just don't see enough evidence in all the paper jabber to suggest anything either way, but what I do know from experience, Levy is ambitious and belligerent.

So I still think the scales are tipped towards him staying this season. Call me delusional, but that's how I see it.

      Hope that helps, Rupert.
