Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Friday

With plenty of clubs set to take part in friendlies over the next few days, Norwich were the only club on our radars last night. Gary Hooper bagged a brace as the Canaries snatched a draw against Braga, while elsewhere, Thomas Vermaelen is ruled out for the start of the season, Newcastle take a step closer to signing Bafetimbi Gomis and West Brom add to their defensive ranks with the capture of Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano.

Braga 2 Norwich 2
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Canaries’ trip to Portugal. Michael Turner returned to action for the first time this summer after a minor operation, while Ryan Bennett was named as part of a back-four which also saw new boy Martin Olsson feature at left-back. Robert Snodgrass started on the right as Nathan Redmond dropped to the bench for the first time in five matches, while Leroy Fer and Gary Hooper were also given the nod, with Wes Hoolahan tucking in behind the former Celtic man. Hooper seems to have wasted little time in carrying over his form at previous club Celtic – the new signing grabbed both the visitors’ goals before being subbed off as one of six second-half changes by Hughton. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel climbed off the bench at the break and partnered Hooper in a front two before the latter made way for Jacob Butterfield.

Prior to the game, Hughton revealed his delight after Turner had taken part in an open training session at Carrow Road the previous day. The Norwich boss also courted caution when discussing Seb Bassong, who has yet to feature this summer after he, too, underwent surgery:

“That’s probably the most pleasing one (Turner’s comeback). Michael has missed the majority of the pre-season, he’s been back in training now for over a week so it’s really pleasing to see him back…He’s (Bassong) had a very minor operation in the summer, which has set back his pre-season. We’re hoping he’s going to be training next week and for us of course it’s always that race to try and get him fit for that first game of the season. What is more important is that he makes sure he does his rehab in the right way because it’s very much about the whole season and not just one or two games.”

Hughton also made assurances over John Ruddy’s game time in the season ahead. The Norwich boss started Mark Bunn between the sticks last night but confirmed Ruddy will be his main stopper next time out:

““Yes, he (Ruddy) will be my number one. He is a quality goalkeeper. Last season was disappointing for him with injury but in Bunny we had someone who came in and did very well. That is another area you need competition, but John is a very good goalkeeper. The England is down to one person and all the players can do is perform well on a consistent basis to ask questions. I would expect any English player operating in the Premier League on a consistent basis to be knocking on the door.”

In Other News
Arsene Wenger rolled out a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Cup match with Napoli later today. The Gunners boss revealed Santi Cazorla will feature for the first time this summer after an extended rest due to Confederations Cup duties with Spain, while Wojciech Szczesny is fully fit after a recent back problem prevented him from playing in each of the last couple of friendlies. The Gunners boss also spoke on the fitness of a couple of defenders, with only a fortnight now until the new season kicks off:

“Vermaelen is out for six more weeks [at least before returning to training] and Monreal will start [light] training on Monday. Vermaelen is developing normally but he has a stress fracture in his back which takes time.”

While Monreal’s potential return is likely to deter many from investing in Kieran Gibbs, with the duo vying for the left-back berth, Vermaelen’s absence is set to afford Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the chance to continue the central defensive partnership established towards the end of the previous campaign. Given that Arsenal face only one of last term’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks, the schedule affords them plenty opportunity to rack up the defensive returns and replicate the resilience that saw them concede just 37 times in 2012/13, the second most impressive backline in the Premier League.

Uruguayan centre-half Diego Lugano took to twitter last night to announce he has signed for West Brom. The 32-year-old rolls up to the Hawthorns on a two-year deal and follows fellow free transfer Nicolas Anelka to the club as Steve Clarke continues to be somewhat frugal with his summer spending. Given that Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson both missed just two games apiece over the course of the previous campaign, Lugano’s game time seems far from assured, despite his wealth of experience – we’ll have more on the new Hawthorns recruit in an upcoming Scout Report over the next day or two.

Reports indicate Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Bafetimbi Gomis after agreeing a fee with Lyon for the forward’s services. The French club’s president Jean Michel Aulas revealed:

“We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is eight million euros (£7million), plus two million bonus. The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents’ fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.”

Yet to make a single acquisition since the appointment of Joe Kinnear, the Magpies have so far been thwarted in their bid to bolster a faltering attack that scored just 45 times in 2012/13. They are believed to have pulled out of a bid for Darren Bent – leaving Fulham as favourites for the Villa man’s signature – but Alan Pardew is still keen on QPR’s Loic Remy, with a season-long loan deal mooted. With Papiss Cisse back in contention after resolving his dispute with the club, and Hatem Ben Arfa a viable option on the right of a front three, it remains to be seen just what system Pardew has in mind if he manages to snap up both Gomis and Remy before the transfer window closes on September 2.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I currently have 3 doubles in my team :
    Walcott + Giroud
    Silva + Dzeko
    Coutinho + Sturridge

Taking fixtures into account they al seem pretty fool-proof (apart maybe from Dzeko who might not start but I'm taking a punt here).

I suspect what the answer is going to be but I'll ask anyway : am I putting too many eggs in my one basket?

I think the Arsenal double makes sense.

The Man City double is risky, as you said, but you seem to like the Dzeko punt.

The Liverpool double seems the least advisable, mainly because Sturridge looks like he's going to be struggling for fitness.

If it was me, I'd have W+G, Silva and Coutinho

But do you not think that most points are acquired through the midfields and strikers? Even a good defensive performance from a top team can be in vain if they just concede ONE goal whereas mids and strikers can score or get many assists..

quite poor defence, otherwise ok. Can you afford rvp and soldado? Dzeko is a good choice, i think as the second most mature striker at city with aguero injured he'll start the first few games against easy teams. Whether he plays against Man United I don't know.

Here's my final RMT for the day:

    Mignolet (Davis)
Lowton, A Cole, Collins (Parr, Brayford)
    Hazard, Silva, Snodgrass, Mirallas (Barkley)
    RVP,Aspas, Giroud

I know the defence is weak but I will shore it up in the first couple as long as Aspas is getting a game I shouldn't have much else to trouble me. My fingers are wrapped around the wildcard also.

I don't know who I would have ahead of RVP at any point throughout the entire season, especially from the Chelsea forwards. I'm saying, if it all goes tits up and say Barkley and Aspas both aren't playing, I'll change one of them. If it goes any more wrong than that I'd consider the wildcard. But there should be enough movements between people starting who are cheap that I can change them easy enough. The wildcard is a worst-case scenario.

I know it's a bit wishy-washy but I just feel in the 5.0 defender bracket I might as well get one who's playing two games and he will be among the first to go. I should really go all in if I'm going to wildcard, but I would prefer not to.

I have Barkley as there has been some suggestion that he could play a part, but at any rate, will be benched more often than not until a more useful cheap midfielder reveals himself.

According to your crystal ball, who scores more in week 1: Mirallas vs Nor (A) or Tonev Ars (A), Che (A)?

I have Tonev as my cheap 5th at the moment.

I reckon they'll both score poorly, but I think I'd play Mirallas over those and get another cheapie. Not sure Tonev is nailed on.

Not sure Mirallas will score highly first week, but I have him anyway.

I have 3 Chelsea players already and don't want to use my WC early, so having a Villa player as well is too much of a risk when it comes to changes for the blank week

I can't understand why so many people have the likes of Collins in there team? Luna is a nailed on starter for villa because Bennett is terrible. Luna is a bargin 4.5 mill and dgw. Am I missing something here?

      Villa defence is pathetic.
West Ham are solid because Big Sam is so defensive minded.

Villa have two hard fixtures and are generally shite at the back. Villa have no game in GW3 and dealing with that transfer could be annoying.

      1) Villa will concede goals in the DGW.

      2) If you have 3 chelsea players already for the DGW, having a villa player makes it too risky if you don't want to use your WC

      3) Collins starts with a reasonably easy home game and is nailed on

      4) West Ham rotate well with Southampton (Clyne, Shaw etc)

      2012/2013 Clean Sheets:

      Aston Villa: 5
      West Ham: 11

Aston Villa's DGW is against Arsenal and Chelsea, both away. Combined they conceded 12 goals against those teams last season.

Luna will probably end up on 2 or 3 pts for the DGW.

i needed a 5.0 midfielder that is likely to play, due to rotation with the DGW players i've picked, and there is no 4.0 southampton defender i can pick who will get game time, because my 3 other defenders are decided now, and that leaves 8.0 left for two defenders.

i could pick Januzaj but i don't think he'll play.

RMT please lads, need advice especially on the striking force, is lukaku worth the risk? Also my inclusion of Gerrard is to add an element of diversity contrasting to the popular option. Coutinho. Or is that just stupid?

    Boruc, Foster

    A Cole/Zabaleta/ Dawson/ M Turner/ Brayford

    Hazard/Jarvis/Gerrard/Walcott/Mirallas

    Lukaku/Jrod/Dzeko

Lukaku could be worth the punt for DGW... not a lot of good FPL options in the Chelsea attack department for DGW.

Gerrard could work out, but Coutinho's points pr minute is much higher than Gerrards.

Of the 5.5 fellas im looking at the hammers duo of Noble and Jarvis, who should I choose?

I see Noble is on pens and set pieces (but the hammers dont seem to win many pens)

and Jarvis is good for assists, but was dissapointing last season

    Any other good 5.5ers?

After I read some RMT and some comments in the past few days I must congratulate to you all lads. This was the quickest picking/ selecting of the template team AKA Power 5. At this time it is Power 4 in midfield only the 5th one is different, but wait no more when the season starts I assume we will solve that. Lets juts copy our teams we will "kill" in our mini leagues. Enough talk here is the actual Power 4. COPY IT !!!!

    Haz Cout Wally Mirr

    Get in !!!

P.S. I see Evs is promoting the 5th one 😉 Just saw hot topics

If Fabregas goes to United, do we see him playing deeper alongside Carrick or will be essentially take Rooney and Kagawa's #10 role? It just seems weird if their plan is to strengthen an area where they (at least at the moment) have 2 excellent options. RVP could even play in support of Chica which worked very well last season the few games they did.
