Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

I suppose the good thing about having (an improving) Liv. players this season is not having the headache of European interference, with regards to rotation.

    or Team B)

    Parr Shaw Collins (Chester Brayford)
    Mirallas Snoddy Walcott Hazard (Kim)
    RVP Giroud Bony
    +1m

I've already gone off Lukaku, now i'm not sure Dzeko will get game time and i'm wondering whether Coutinho will flop.

I'm deffo sticking with RVP and Giroud and I'm tempted by Bony's form, and liked what i saw in Kim

    RE: Navas

Is Jesus nailed on? He might not score a lot of goals, but he sure loves a cross or two.

I fancy his career is due a resurrection. He could be City's saviour. I think he might crucify a few defences this season.

I see a lot of people have talked up Silva...but I'm not taking it as gospel.

I've been thinking of 2 strategies

    1 WC gw2
    2 keep WC

The use of the WC early will mean u will pick the best XI for Gw1 so probably getting a top 10k + rank.
Get an extra .5m + which would help make a better GK pair.
And pick all the form players that are on the up

    Or

Go in with a planned 15 that will rotate also including 3 Chelsea players.
Get rid of at least 1 Chelsea player gw2
Use wildcard for bigger problems or a Dgw with a lot of teams

    Using the WC would earn

    10 points
Extra cash even if it won't be much
    No Chelsea or vill

You could get an extra 10 million and still be far from top 10K after week one. No guarantees that getting your perceived best 11 out means you'll have a great week.

I know some people have success using the WC early on, but I don't like doing it. There are so many DGWs toward the end of the year, that I think the discipline of holding onto it can be rewarded.

The last few years I have gone for an early WC, but have equally regretted this and ended up taking hits in order to correct my "knee jerking" in order to have the best team, based on the previous results.

This has cost me dearly each season, so this year i'm planning to pick a team that will last the initial sprint for the first few games.

Then use the WC for double game weeks and when the squad has more red cards than feesable to play a full squad

    Ok guys
    RMT time.
    It's my 957th draft 😀
    Joke

    Migs (Davis)
    Toure Cole Collins (Chester Ward)
Wally Hazard Nolan Mirallas Coutinho or Silva?
    Lakaku Dzeko (j. Rod)

Got 2m in bank. Going for 5 in mid as theres more points if they score goals.
I have a few ideas for transfers for coming weeks.
    All thoughts and comments welcome.

    Thanks 🙂

When playing in classic and head to head league's, how do your tactics differ?
Over the past 2 seasons I've won my work head to head league, but overall position has suffered.
      2010/2011 finished 1035, past two seasons 30,000+.

      Long time follower, first post.

I've only been doing this 3 years now mate.
In my first year 2010/11 icame 4th in my work mini league 18000+ overall
        2011/12 I came 8th 36000+ overall
2012/13 I won my mini league 38000+ over all.
Your doing better than me mate.

I've used my wild card early on a couple of occasions.
I wish I could say I have some good tactics but sadly I don't but I feel a strong midfield and at least 1 strong striker is a good start.
Some guys on this site know their stuff and I just try and absorb as much from them as possible.
        Sorry if this isn't helpful.

        Later dude.

    Thoughts on the below folks?

    Mignolet (Mannone)

    Coleman Collins Murner (Brayford Shaw)

    Hazard Mirallas Walcott Sessegnon (Kim)

    RVP Berbatov Dzeko

    My thinking / concerns:
    - Defence too uber or does Mignolet save it (pun intended)?
    - Sess as a differential for first stretch and can pick up a surprise package in his place
    - Dzeko worries me as difficult to replace at price point

I think sess is a nice differential. Will play in the hole and has the capability of decent returns. I think he is worth the gamble.
Dzeko is a risk but probably worth taking it considering his price.
I'm not sure on Coleman. But plenty will disagree with me.
      Overall it's a solid team

lambert is my second option at 7.5 - I am going with RVP/Dzeko/Anelka to start - but would potentially upgrade anelka to remy or replace dzeko

At 7.0 there are a couple worth considering too

      I like it.

I'm not sure about Dzeko game time either but Remy should come in at £7m mark.

I'm a great believer in the £4.5m defence, not sure about Berba either

      defence is cheap but ok.
sess - nice to see a different pick
dzeko - plenty around his price point surely - lambert, berbs, kone, jrod - so shouldn't worry.

I reckon he's already their best striker now.

Definitely will score goals for them especially with service from Cabaye and Ben Arfa. Good signing.

If he stays a free man after his bail next month then he will be a very good signing for them.

Nah, he'll make the move permanent I reckon, as long as he avoids a stretch inside at Her Majesty's leisure.

Probably suit him better at NUFC anyway. If we are good enough to come back up I'd like to see us keep Austin and get a striker or two that actually want to play for us.

If we do somehow manage to get Defoe (I doubt it very much) and get promoted atthe first time of asking that would pretty much be our opening day strike force for 2014/15 anyway. AJ and BZ contracts expire at the end of this season.

I don't know, Tony Fernandes said recently that he expected two players to leave on loan as we want to keep them for the future, I assume those two are Remy and Adel.

No chance Defoe will drop a division especially in a World Cup year.

Loic can play wide, which Cissé is absolutely pants at. Remy is a better finisher too anyway, just imo an all round better striker and I'd say he's already their best forward now.
