Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Need to see bench as well really, but from what you've got; Kagawa is a risk if Rooney doesn't move on. Frontline is slightly punty but personally I like it. Is Sagna nailed on? Apologies if he is, I haven't looked into Arsenal defenders. Don't trust 'em 😉

    RMT

I'm pretty happy atm with it assuming Bale goes, haven't tinkered in a while now!

    Migs - Mannone

    Riether - Cole - Clyne - Chester - Parr

    Coutinho - Walcott - Hazard - Noble

RVP - Lambert - 6.5 (Hooper atm but we will say what happens with transfers, Reny hopefully)

Was thinking upgrading the 6.5 to Benteke and downgrading Cout?

I live in Hawaii and am still new to learning the sport. I have found this site to be an absolute gold mine of information in my second year of fantasy football last year. One thing that surprises me is that everyone keeps rehashing different combinations of the same players in these RMT's over and over again, yet one of the most critical issues is rarely discussed. The new Bonus Points System (BPS) could have a huge impact on the game, am i right? I would like to see more commentary on players in relation to this new scoring system. Like which players are projected to do well in this system based on their historical statistical output. For instance, I was reading how Paulinho is a high percentage passer. Does that make him worth the .5 over Snodgrass? My knowledge of the players is so limited that it's hard for me to know these things. While we're here, this is my current list of usual suspects:

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Coleman Mertesacker Parr

    Paulinho Mirallas Hazard Coutinho

    Van Persie Dzeko Lukaku

    Kim Brayford Chester

Winning is in the details and those that are quick to exploit scoring changes in a league usually have a leg up. While I am new to football (we call soccer cause our ancestors are megalomaniac a-holes), I am a veteran of fantasy games for almost 20 years.

Personally I think the new BPS will make a difference in a game that ends 0-0 but goals, shots and assists will still be the biggest influences on BPS points distribution. It might add value to your $5-6.5mil mids and influence who you pick as your 4th or 5th mid, but it's not going to affect you big hitter selection too much I wouldn't have thought.

      1. Love your name. Remender's X-Force is my shit.

      2. Keep in mind that the absolute maximum number of bonus points available in a given week is 10 (3 for the top scorer, doubled because he's your captain, and 2 each from two players tied for second most bonus points). If anyone manages that twice in the entire season I'll be stunned. More likely bonus scores week to week will be more like 2, or 0. As a result, no one's treating the bonus point system like it's a game changer, because it probably isn't.

My logic is flawed. Hypothetically one could score 42 bonus points in a DGW, if every player were the top bonus point scorer in their games (requiring rather comprehensive coverage), and the captain plays two games and receives 3 bonus points (doubled) in each. A highly unlikely scenario.

I've been saying for ages that the biggest flaw in the bonus system is the large number of bonus points awarded in the most boring games. On one occasion last season, 5 players in the same match all scored 2 BPs each in a 0-0 draw.

See my above comment, I was coming at the problem from the wrong angle entirely. 6, 7, or 9 bonus points are awarded *for each tie* each week.

Consequently, if you had perfect coverage, and 10 of your players were the top bonus point scorers in their respective matches and your 11th man were the second highest scorer in the one match where you had an overlap (either players on the same team or playing against each other) you would be awarded 35 points (2+(9*3)+(3*2)). If this hypothetical scenario included a DGW, the 11th man could be removed from the equation, and a perfect score would involve 3 points from each of the first 10 matches (one of which would count for six as it was scored by the captain), and another six from the captain in his second match.

All of which is virtually impossible. However, the fact that bonus points are available in each tie each week renders my claim that "bonus scores week to week will be more like 2, or 0" false. It's entirely reasonable to expect to score several bonus points each week (on average) so long as some of your players are in the top 3 bonus point scorers in their respective matches most of the time.

The maximum number of bonus points that could possibly be awarded in a single match is 28*3=84, if all 22 starters plus 6 subs each score the same number of BPS.

In a multiple DGW, where at least 6 teams have 2 matches each (which does sometimes happen), the theoretical maximum number of BPs would be 12*6=72.

If a treble game-week ever occurs, then even bigger totals would be possible.

Of course, none of this will ever happen.

However, it is not unusual for a fantasy team to score double-figure BPs in a GW.

Had to look at it twice to believe it was under budget. nice.
As far as the new Baps are concerned that's for you to decide if your players fit in to take advantage as outlined on the fpl site. Just might make it easier for you if you are undecided between two similar players then the "potential Baps" may swing it for you. gl.

I like the look of your team but Paulinho is likely to be playing too deep to be worthwhile and for that price there are better prospects. Otherwise the team is good but you are chancing your arm a bit with Dzeko who is by no means a guaranteed starter.

The movie plot sounds like it would be a terrible idea for whomever is "the most hated man in your work place!"

Can just imagine it: "hey Steve!" "So...The purge is tomorrow, and a couple of us were passing around a collection for you, and where wondering what you'd like us to do with your office effects"

Am sure everyone could think of a few people in their lives that would be targeted - mostly bosses I'd imagine! So here's a question - if you could "purge" anyone in football who would it be?

I'm with you on Baines. Vert, even if fit, seems a bit too pricey - he's not on anything special set piece wise.

I am leaning towards Zabs though for his CS and Assist potential. However, the nailed on option is Kompany. I have a decision to make here:

          A) Baines
          B) Zabs
          C) Kompany

I would say Johnson, I think the Liverpool defense both is terms of personnel and system will be a lot more settled this year and I rate his attacking potential higher than Kompany who would seem like the next most obvious pick.

Nah, it's Baines. I rate GJ and at £6m, he's a bargain but Baines will still outscore him.

Hmmm, so now Johnson is in the mix.

        Johnson 6 Last Year's Points: 142
        Zabs 6 LYP: 124
Kompany 6.5 LYP: 91 (but injured for a bit)
        Baines 7.5 LYP: 177

That's a hell of a lot of money saved not getting Baines. I think you're onto something with Johnson.

'Twas the night before GW1, when all through the forum
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The RMTs were hung by the wayside with care,
In hopes that St Robin(c) soon would be there.

The children and Ronh were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of triple-figure GW scores danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the forum there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen season
Gave the lustre of mid-day kick offs to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a tweet revealing the Chelsea lineup, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Bemba Da.
More rapid than eagles his coursers he came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and screamed OMG!

"No Azpi! no, Mata! no, Torres nor Ba!
On, Oscar! On, Hazard! on Lukaku and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Gameweek to all, and to all a good-night!"

    🙂

The season doesn't start until Bemba Da bellows his first OMG 😉

Looking good, however i'd downgrade Luiz/Baines. All the value lies up top....

          Cahill/Nastasic, Toure, Chico, Rat.
          Hazard, Cazorla, Coutinho.

Yeah will prob get rid of luiz and upgrade kim. With assists not counting, i think cazorla and coutinho wont get as many points as goal scoring mids (although they both get a few goals). Could be wrong though.

Both are very consistent players IRL and should be in the hunt for Star man points.

Compare walcott and cazorla points from last season and walcott played like 10 games less or something, funny coz in the sky game cazorla blew him out the water

I'd take Whittingham if game-time wasn't an issue. Bellers too injury prone. Kim probably the best option due to assured starts but I'm leaving Cardiff mids alone until we know more about who will play.

Just logged in for the first time this summer... What's with all the Dzeko love? Aren't you worried about Negredo taking his minutes?

+1. I would think that Aguero would be the safest (most nailed on)/best pick for a city forward. If one can afford it that is.

Ha, I can well understand your confusion. Basically Pelegrini intimated that Dzeko would be a 'starter' this season. Note, however, that could just mean he will play 90mins when he does play (as opposed to his former role as a super-sub), but could still be subject to rotation.

Interesting. Aguero is obv number 1 and I can't see him buying Negredo and not playing him much. Sure, Dzeko may start off the season in the team but with one bad game he could be dropped. The only forward I'd even consider is Aguero.

Yeah Dzeko's a risk alright, but the prevailing opinion is that at 7.5m, and with his manager's recent endorsements, he's worth the risk (I don't think he's a long-term consideration for many though).

That's one insanely low budget you've got there. For 6k, you're going to have to opt for a non-league player.
