Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Need some help here. Still not sure what to do.

    Boruc 4M
    Luiz Collins Turner Shaw 4M
    Silva Hazard Nolan Mirallas 4.5M
    RVP Giroud Lukaku

Where do you chop off 0.5?

    a) 6M defender instead of Luiz (if so which one?)
    b) Compromise on Nolan/Mirallas? If so which one and for who?
    c) Anything else?

          For the first GW, maybe.

But Mirallas playing as a forward, is in hot form in pre-season.

Nolan is pretty much dependent on Carrol who's racing against his fitness. Will he even make the first GW?

this is the main problem with having RVP in your side, other lines tend to suffer.

You'll have 2 cheap GK's, 3 cheap backs and a cheap mid (will they play and cover Hazard GW3?)

          your 4 mids are fine.
Keep Nolan. I will be. Great first 5-6 games. Mirallas has had a great preseason.

I'd chop it off RVP. that's my opinion. I am taking a hard line on it. I think you can pick up Soldado, Sturridge or Benteke and have an excellent all round team without him.

Are you really going to ignore all those guys for the sake of RVP with those tough fixtures?

My two cents on Mirallas is downgrade to Snodgrass, Keep Luiz use 0.5 to upgrade to a 4.5 keeper that rotates with Boruc and pt the other 0.5 in your pocket.

I like Giroud this season, think he'll do very well.

      a) if you're looking specifically for a DGW defender, I think Luiz is your best bet, he's the most likely to play both games imo. If not, any defender from either arsenal or liverpool could be a decent option.

      b) snodgrass is a solid choice. I would probably lose nolan for him.

I don't like Silva. Saw a hot topic saying he was a good choice because he was involved in 24% of City's goals last year and the one before which shows he is consistent. To me though 24% isn't enough for a £9m as you can never captain him. Even if city won 4-0 you'd expect just 1 assist.

Do you want me to do a piece on Walcott? 🙂

I feel Walcott belongs in the elite midfielder group, he's earned it through consistency and explosiveness. In fact I think Walcott has the potential to be somewhat underpriced if he can fulfill his potential. On his day Walcott can be a terrifyingly great FPL asset.

I just wonder will Coutinho reach that kind of level? I don't think they are very alike as players. Walcott for me is more aggressively attacking, Coutinho has that flair and creative magic. But Walcott has that lightning pace and he desperately wants to be a goalscorer (he's constantly saying in interviews he wants to play as a striker)

So to me, that extra goal threat and experience counts for a lot.

Look at it this way...they are 0.5m apart in price but would you captain Coutinho? Maybe against weak opposition...but then you'd probably prefer Suarez/Sturridge over him anyway. But would you captain Walcott? Almost certainly...he has delivered before..he can explode at the right times and most of all he has been reliably consistent when he hits hot streaks.

Totally agreed. Thank you sir. You should have your own regular spot on this site! I've Walcott, though Michu would have been slap bang in my team if it wasn't for the unfavourable fixtures. Though he did score twice in each of the games vs. Man U. Would you care to discuss the case of Walcott vs. Michu?

            Thank you, kind sir! 🙂

I think I will work on a Walcott vs Michu piece if you like? I am with you there, I would love to go for Michu but the fixtures are very tough. Man utd then spurs! He certainly can score against anyone though. It feels so good having Michu in your team I must admit. But I may just resist him and get him after GW3 for when his fixtures get better.

I think there will be quite a few players who could fall in price because of tough starts. Michu is one of those guys...if he doesn't score in the first two games then people will jump ship quickly. So not owning him could be a blessing and not only that...you could get him for cheaper!

Morning all. I have woken this fine day with the resolve to have neither Bale (@ RM) or RVP in my team

Fab five of: Coutinho, Silva, Hazard, Mirrallas, Kagawa (from GW4)
Thab Three of: Soldado, Dzecko, Remy

Yes, someone half decent on the bench, but seeing as it has come to me in a dream, I am sure the hand of God is involved. Somewhere.

    Who's with me?

    Migs / 4m keeper
Mertesacker /clyne or shaw/ turner (nor) / Collins
    Hazard/ Walcott / silva / Thomas
    Giroud/ sturridge / lukakau

Would have 2m in bank to upgrade lukakau to soldado week 2. May even just start with soldado

Most are going 2 Chelsea but it doesn't necessarily mean it's the best thing to do!

If Lukaku looks like he'll start the first 2 games, I'll consider him, but as it stands he will probably get 120 mins max. Not bad, but I have to work out whether it's worth the extra transfer (probably a hit) to sell him.

If the bonus point system was established last year Cazorla would have got 272 point instead of 202. He gets goals, assist, and his pass completion percentage is also high.

That is an average though, and has no reflection on actual bonus points being awarded.

Walcott played over 1,000 minuntes less than Caz and only scored 11 points fewer. Any BPS he lacks, he'll make up for with attacking returns.

a few reasons have been outlined in good posts before so I'll paraphrase. firstly midfielders tend to be longer term investments you don't change as much, strikers blow hot and cold so you need the full three spots to be able to draft people in when they hit form. Secondly, there's much more options for a cheap midfielder to bench who will still play as opposed to cheap strikers. It's much, much better in terms of term flexibility. Mids get more over the course of a season in general, but even a striker who doesn't have a full great season can have a month where he outdoes every midfielder in the game.

I hear that but even a Benteke who has a great season as a striker will have 8 mids outscoring him.

The mids who play in an advanced position are the most important players in the game.

Not only are there goal threats like the strikers, they notch quite a few assists as well, and considerably more bonus points. They even have the benefit of picking up a couple cheeky clean sheet points.

From a fantasy perspective it really should be a no brainer

they'll outscore him over the course of the season, but there were some periods last season when benteke outscored every mid in the game, and getting strikers at those times is crucial. There's a reason every top team used 3-4-3 and will continue to do...it works.

The Mertesacker love has gotten out of control. I don't think Arsenal will keep a clean sheet in any of their first three games. He'll be good value over the season, but not right away. I'd much rather get cheapies with good fixtures (WHM, NOR) who can be trusted at home, or spend the extra cash on City, who could quite easily go the first 4 games without conceding.
