Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

I think I want Dzeko up front, alongside Giroud, and RVP. To do this I need a 6.0m defender (downgrading Cashley)...

With the DGW I'm thinking I should have a Chelsea player but the chances of them getting 2 games may be a little slim. Am I better off just going for a solid 6.0m defender from a team I think will get a CS, such as a Man City, or Liverpool defender?

The Chelsea options in DEF are Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta (already earmarked by some for 90mins only)

I think at least one of Terry and Cahill will start both, waiting on Terry's fitness.

If one of the defenders look like starting both games and carry the same/more attacking threat than Zaba, it's worth the gamble IMO.

Advantages of getting a 'risky' Chelsea defender:
      - They may well play both games so their points'ceiling' is much higher.
      - Both fixtures have great clean sheet potential so even 90 minutes may be enough to match/better the scores of other players.
      - Both fixtures have great attacking potential and the 3 defenders you named all regularly get amongst the points in that respect.

Advantages of getting a safe option elsewhere:
      - Chelsea's fixtures after GW1 are bad and you'd want an exit strategy meaning you'll burn a transfer, use your wildcard or have a 6m defender sitting on your bench for a couple of weeks.
      - You can get a Liverpool defender for 5m and use the spare 1m elsewhere.

It's all a matter of cost/benefit analysis. Do you think Chelsea defenders will score 4 (or more) extra points than the other options in GW1?

I don't think the extra cost is an issue, since we will be selling them after a week or two anyway.

I suppose it depends what the extra 1m could buy you in the meantime - it could be worth the extra points you talk about if it buys you a better goal threat. Even keeping it in the bank as a safety blanket might be a good idea as it gives you that little extra flexibility if there's a transfer you really want to get on in GW2.

It's an interesting argument and I'm not actually sure which side I'm taking!

Safety blankets are always good, nothing worse than being stuck with a couple of players that don't play in the first few weeks.

Yep, a little spare cash to upgrade is great. I don't like to use my wildcard early so having security of starts and flexibility of transfers is important to me, everyone plays differently though 🙂

Good post. Like you say it's mainly about the points ceiling, but that is based on them actually playing both games...

My plan was to chuck a Chelsea player in there as a punt, as I am planning on ditching for GW2. Will then probably get Toure, Erik Peters, or Coleman

Right, so basically it hinges on whether a Chelsea defender will outscore those players by enough to justify an extra transfer. If you price the transfer at 4 points then it's Terry vs Toure + 4 (or similar).

Put like that I think I'd go for Toure but something feels wrong 😕

Forgive me for asking but why exactly does Wayne Rooney want to leave united?

The only reason I can see is that he is not comfortable playing second fiddle to RVP, if so it's a pathetic and cowardly reason for not wanting to stand up and fight for it. Also it contradicts his first request a couple of years back when he said that united were not as big a draw for big players, then when United sign a high profile player Rooney throws his toys out having to share the lime light.

At united he has the chance to break bobby charltons years long record and put him right at the top of uniteds already rich history. I for one would hate for that to happen, if Charltons record is going to be broken it needs to be broken by someone who deserves to wear the shirt.....Rooney is not that man.

I must say at the time of his first transfer request I wanted to get rid and now even more so. He's not the same player and united need to get rid before any further damage is done to United, I would rather see him at Chelsea than united next season, preferably abroad but I can't see it happen.

when people like daniel taylor are saying rooney wants to leave, rooney wants to leave.

He hates fergie and thinks he still will pull the strings, but more importantly he hates him because fergie realises he's past his best, has a serious ego problem and is a poisonous presence in the squad.

There was a nice article on uniteds ex assistants saying Rooney could have been better than Ronaldo had he hit the weights more often. His fitness is his main concearn and I think even he reallizes this, If he was on his way out I see no reason he was in the best shape of his life before the pre season started(as united assistants were quoted on)

Well that was totally out of context IMO, his exact words were:

"Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we'll need him,"
"Wayne has got a major role to play, we need to get him as many goals as we can. Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in,"

If you read the entire interview it is more like Rooney will need to carry the team when RVP is out.

I think RVP has something in his contract about playing time; Fergie very rarely rested him.

Rooney was getting rested for the Madrid game 😯

I can understand him being pissed off about that!

When Ronaldo left, Fergie then turned to Rooney as the main man, Rooney feels he delivered, but was then dumped on his ass when they signed RVP.

Why is it so wrong that Rooney wants to leave to get more gametime? Why should players only be told to leave when they are surplus to the requirements, but not on his own choice?

He feels he is gonna play second fiddle to RVP again this season, and spend some time at least on the bench, as RVP is deemed more essential than he is. But a player of his caliber obviously thinks that he deserves to play at least in all the important matches, something that United doesn't agree with.

No player is bigger than united, in fact no player is bigger than any one single club.

That has nothing to do with it.

Rooney had the season of his life; then Utd say, thanks mate, then sign RVP & drop him...

They did the same with Berbatov; top scorer in the league, then gets dropped...

Are you telling me that he is a physically fit individual that looks after himself?

Nothing frustrates me more than the ability that man has, he is an unbelievable talent that for me doesn't look after himself....it's not just my opinion, it's everyone's. I never wanted him to leave and even forgave the first request, but now if he wants to go he should go....just be transparent about your intentions. By the same token he should also fight to be first choice...I honestly think he would have started every possible game next year if he stayed.

Bottom line for me as an individual that takes pride in his fitness it's frustrating to see an incredible talent not being utilised and being too moronic to see that. If I had 1% of his ability I would be happy.

To say Rooney is not fit enough is wrong.

This is the same Rooney that scored 27 league goals, got 8 assists the year before, when he was played as the number 9.

This season he was the number 10 & got dropped.

If Rooney signed for Arsenal, id be delighted.

But last season he had a few niggles and couldn't get the game time required due to those injuries and subsequent loss of form. I watched united last season and the only time he was actually dropped when his form was god awful.....he should fight for his place rather than jumping ship so quickly.

I think he's been wanting to jump the ship for some time. There was a transfer request, some time back in October, and then now.

United should let go of a player who is unhappy, cash in, and sign someone new. They have pleaded enough with Rooney, it's time to let him go.

If in any other profession, an employee wanted to leave an organisation for either better pay, more responsibility, a manager they were more likely to get on with, or even just a change of environment - we would not bat an eyelid.

In modern football, the concept of loyalty (from player to club, and club to player) is - perhaps unfortunately - becoming less relevant.

Hi guys payed for the membership yesterday and this is my first post,

What do you all make of this team.

    Mingolet/Harper

    Coleman Koscielny Amorebieta Jagielka Baker

    Hazard Hernandez Mirallas Coutinho Lampard

Lukaku Benteke Sturridge (Soldado when hes available)

I plan to change lampard in gw2/3 and im also considering getting Bony in for Lukaku depending what transfer business Chelsea do.

    Any advice would be appreciated

Hernandez has been in blistering form pre season and he scored a bucket load of points last season after only playing 2100 mins.

And no im not sure Lampard will start both fixtures but he will definately start 1 and feature in the other. But for a double game week for Chelsae what are my alternatives?

Weren't most of his points from playing in the hole behind Michu? Bony will play up front now and surely he won't start ahead of Michu. I'm also not sure how the Europe League will effect Swansea and their opening schedule isn't the best, so I'm avoiding them.

As you no doubt know, Hazard is your man for the DGW. The rest are all a punt I guess but I'm thinking of punting on Lukaku.

      2 EVR defs? Boot Jags.
Any team I see sans RVP gives me the jitters, sorry. That front line needs a booster.
      Walcott needs to be in.
Wouldn't have Hernandez given fix and Lamps is an uncertain starter.

They were narrowly beaten by a very strong Real Madrid a few days ago and according to the match reports they looked very good.

      Hi chris!

My main concern would be lampard's game time. Mourinho has mentioned that he's looking to rotate him so I'm not sure if he's that good of a pick. I personally favour oscar as a punt but even he's not looking certain to play both games.

        Hi Rubik

I understand your concerns which is why I am only putting him in for the first gameweek or 2

But like I said for the double game in week 1 I must have 2 Chelsea mids and realistically Hazard and Mata are maybe the only 2 mids that are likely to start both games (attacking wise)

Not a big fan of the Amorebieta/Baker picks in defence personally - Baker is unlikely to play so if the casuals drop him en masse you may be stuck with a non-playing 3.9 defender which is a bit of a nightmare! Amorebieta is a card magnet but if you trust the Fulham defence then fair enough.

Your spot on about baker but I was looking for a cheap defender who plays for a team that has a chance of keeping clean sheets. I think he will start as the managers philosophy is trust in the youth but if he doesn't in week 1 he is out!!

As long as you're going in to it with your eyes open then it's all good 🙂 I prefer security of starts early on as there are always more pressing transfers than your cheap defenders but I'm also loathe to take hits which isn't a problem everyone else suffers! Good luck 🙂

One plays as a fwd, one a mid. Here we have two mids doing the same job. Mostly assisting...or in Caz's case, assisting the assister.

Not sure I agree with that... 13 assists a piece, 14 goals for Wally and 12 for Santi. Both chipping in with both, and if they were playing for different teams getting those kinds of results you'd be pretty chuffed I'd wager.

I'm not advocating getting these two by the way, I'm just saying I don't see the problem with having two mids vs a mid and a striker. Playing devil's advocate really. (aka being contrary)

It would be interesting I guess to see whether their goals/assists tended to alternate or whether they overlapped and all came at times when Arsenal had forma/fixtures.

The rumours are that Cazorla is set to benefit significantly from the new Bonus Points system. Most people have more than one player from a team, if they both happen to be highly effective in FPL, it makes even more sense.

One doing well does not necessarily preclude success for the other.

    Due to popular demand

Here is a repost of my poem from earlier 🙂

'Twas the night before GW1, when all through the forum
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The RMTs were hung by the wayside with care,
In hopes that St Robin(c) soon would be there.

The children and Ronh were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of triple-figure GW scores danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the forum there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen season
Gave the lustre of mid-day kick offs to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a tweet revealing the Chelsea lineup, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Bemba Da.
More rapid than eagles his coursers he came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and screamed OMG!

"No Azpi! no, Mata! no, Torres nor Ba!
On, Oscar! On, Hazard! on Lukaku and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

But I don't know about Barkley and I've got Anelka over JRod.

Also, I don't see the point in taking an unnecessary hit in GW2 when you don't have to.Why not just save £6m in the bank for Lukaku -> RVP and take out Luiz the week after?

220 players start gw1, but sometimes it seems that there are only about 20 to choose from on here, or worse, that players like snodgrass are guaranteed returns.

not particularly, just a bit of a starting liability.....

dzeko could be good for 1-2 gws but he's not going to be first choice for long.

It's not all about gw 1 though. Do you really think Dzeko and lukakau will play week in week out? If not you're going to need to transfer them out pretty soon. I can see the lure of lukaku's double game week but even then he's only going to play around 100 mins I reckon. Other striker suggestions would be soldado, lambert, giroud

I would personally prefer Paulinho..but for both of them we have to see how does AVB plays them...I suggestion I would like to give is play a 3-4-3 as defenders if they get points get a lot of point but many of the times they don't. Mid Fielders get good points so you can remove Heitinga because Distin has played well in the pre season and will not be assured of a starting place and get a midfield instead.

Can't believe theres so much confidence in Dzeko, Aguero is on hes way back and Negredo just brought in and Jovetic also in the mix. Would be great if it worked out tho.

Kun hasn't played any pre season. Not selected for Argies friendly due to injury.

Brayford is a Cardiff defender, attacking, nailed
Kim is a Cardiff playmaker on some set pieces, playing in the hole, looks quality
Ward is a Palace full back, he looks quality, nailed on

Read somewhere that the photo consisted of both Bale and Dempsey and with Dempsey gone they had to remove it. Doesn't mean Bale is confirmed gone

My favourite kind of transfer gossip. Obviously a club's social media team are involved in discussions at the highest level.

On a related note, I see Liverpool have removed 'In the air tonight' from their Spotify favourites... Steven Gerrard is leaving!

Please take a look at my team and tell me what you think. Can't stop tinkering!!

        Mignolet

        Luna (DGW)
        Ivanovic (DGW)
        McAuley

        Bellamy
        Hazard (DGW)
        Lingard
        Mata (DGW)

        Anelka
        RVP
        Benteke (DGW)

        Subs: Harper, Pieters, Garrido, Diame.

Using a home rotation plan in defense between Villa/WestBrom and Norwich/Stoke.

Also trying to take advantage of Chelsea double gameweek with the intention of swapping out Mata and Hazard for Bale and Michu for GW2. Maybe even Benteke out for Sturridge.

Team will then look like this after GW1:

        Mignolet

        Luna
        Ivanovic
        Pieters

        Bellamy
        Michu
        Lingard
        Bale

        Anelka
        RVP
        Sturridge

        Soo what do you think?
