Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

        Coz i want Soldado

So it's Haz + 2 of Benteke/Lukaku/Chel def. Easier to shift one of the strikers.

I Loic Remy a fantasy option?

I've only seen him play once, he spend most of his time running offside but scored, had a good eye for the ball and good turn of speed.

    Anyone considering a cheap forward?

Will he get game time, what sort of formaton have the toon been playing pre season?

i think he's lacking match fitness atm and i've heard he's injured so you might wanna and see 🙂

he will either play upfront in a 442 formation or on the left wing in a 433/4231 formation

Slight risky and takes up a striker spot.

HBA is a decent mid option. He'll be feeding Remy and also having a few attempts on goal himself.

Considering the competition for his position, there are issues about rotation.

Also, I'm cautious of the legal allegations surrounding him, and that he is allegedly on bail until September, when he may have to deal with court proceedings.

    Morning all,

    Assuming Bale leaves...

    Migs, Boruc

    Kos, Coleman, Clyne, Collins, Chester

    Hazard, Wally, Coutinho, Nolan, Thomas

    Soldado, Giroud, Lukaku

1m in the bank and plan to swap Lukaku to whoever I can afford that seems to hit form by GW3. Prob Lambert, Bony or maybe Sturridge if he gets fit soon.

    Reasonable, right?

Not a good record against top teams. He scored 1 goal in 10 games against top 5 teams last season. I think that says more about Villa than it does about him but it's all the same for our purposes.

I really hope spurs, man utd and Liverpool keep bale, rooney and suarez. Whilst its always exciting when big players move, I hope the clubs hold their ground, force them to stay and then the players respond with respect and have a great season.. This will send out strong messages about the importance of contracts and give clubs like Villa a chance to hold onto players...

      Especially in Bale's case.

When he started at Spurs, he had a 20 something game losing stretch....and was a laughing stock.

Spuds stood by him, he should have a bit more respect for the club.

I agree entirely, but times may have changed.

I would prefer them to also stay in the league, if they must move - but their own fans may disagree on seeing a star turn out for their rivals. Having world class players leave your domestic league is rarely good.

The premier league has been guilty of attracting some the best players from other countries (through no fault of its own, and to nowhere near the extent that has been purported, you could argue) so I'm sure its just desserts now.

I don't like the question marks against these players right now when trying to build a team. So many 'what ifs'

What if Rooney goes to Chelsea...?

What if Fabregas goes to united...?

What if Ronaldo goes to United...?

What if Bale moves to Madrid...?

What if Kagawa stakes his place in the hole for United...?

What if Boselli turns up again...?

...and on top of all this a DGW in week 1

For center forwards (as opposed to second strikers) I tend to look at the ability to win headers and strength, followed by finishing ability and composure, then finally the ability to find space and spring the offside trap, and read your team mates' passes as an indication of how seamlessly a player will transition into the league.

Soldado is nowhere near as strong as Benteke or even Michu in the air, but he is still able to finish well. However a significant part of his game involves reading his team mates passes and drifting into space - and this is what many traditional center forwards struggle with when they arrive at a new team or move to a new league. The ones that rely on off the ball movements rather than on the ball strength have a more difficult time transitioning and take a little longer to settle. He will certainly not be in my team in Gameweek 1. If he does get the supply and settle in well, then he could be a contender. The fact that he is up against a newly promoted team will undoubtedly give him a boost of confidence.

I have all three and am thinking of dropping Ivanovic purely for the transfer headache it will cause me. Right now I'm gonna keep Hazard, drop Ivanovic in week two for zabaletta (as utd will prob score). That is unless Lukaka has been dropped, then it'll be a straight swap for him and Bony for me. Also depends if Zabaletta will start for City.

Then a couple of weeks of tinkering to get Snodgrass in the middle instead of zabaletta at back. Though I could stick with him if he's racking in the points.

Please take a look at my team and tell me what you think. Can't stop tinkering!!

    Mignolet (Harper)
    Luna, Ivanovic, McAuley (Pieters, Garrido)
    Bellamy, Hazard, Mata, Lingard (Diame)
    Anelka, RVP, Benteke

Using a home rotation plan in defense between Villa/WestBrom and Norwich/Stoke.

Also trying to take advantage of Chelsea double gameweek with the intention of swapping out Mata and Hazard for Bale and Michu for GW2. Maybe even Benteke out for Sturridge.

Team will then look like this after GW1:

    Mignolet (Harper)
    Pieters, Ivanovic, McAuley (Luna, Garrido)
    Bellamy, Michu, Bale, Lingard (Diame)
    Anelka, RVP, Benteke

Soo what do you think? Could avoid the 4 point hit in GW2 by having Michu from the start but trying to decide if he will get more points in GW1 than Mata playing 2 games and loosing 4 points.

Lingard = don't bother 98% of the time.

Thanks for posting in a friendly format.

Lingard is sooo cheap tho, can't find a 4.5 alternative. He can always auto-sub to bench for that 98% 🙂

Get Thomas. Not sure Diame is much better tbh.

I'm United fans and I'm 100% sure Lingard won't play in our first team. He will probably like Powell, play a few games. He's not ready yet. His balance, control, touch, pass are just not good enough for EPL big team level yet.

I like having both Mata and Hazard for the DGW, I can't see Michu getting above 6 points until GW7 so I'd stick with Mata. So you'd keep Benteke for a few game weeks?

Well I'll see how he gets on, plan was to bring sturridge in but not seen him pre-season. Would be nice to have a Man City but their rotation risk scares me.

Your team is a mess restart. So many bad options too many bandwagons. You are also firgetting bout the gwk 3 blank

    A) Toure + Giroud + Snod

    Or:

    B) Mertesacker + Anelka + Cout

I got: Boruc, Mannone, Coleman, Brayford, Collins, Turner, Hazard, Walcott, Thomas, Mirallas, RVP, Lukaku

    RM(hopefully nailed-on and boring)Team
    9m in the bank.

    Cech Boruc
    Merts Toure Shaw Collins Brayford
    Hazard Mirallas Nolan Snodgrass Thomas
    Lukaku Carroll JRod

I don't want to upgrade the benchers as there will undoubtebly be bandwagons and having the cash ready saves from unnecessary hits.ie the new Michu or RVP for gw4.

Three whm I know but Carroll and Nolan love playing against Newcastle and have CAR and STK either side of this.

9m in the bank is a bit excessive, perhaps switch Carroll to RVP so you can always downgrade him if he isn't performing?

I reckon Carroll with CAR new STK will outscore Rvp with swa CHE liv. I don't want to be forced to take him out GW1 if he doesn't score and there's a mass exodus.
