Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

    Uber-premium striker debate:

If Suarez stays in England then he will be in my team once his ban is lifted. This much I know.
If Rooney went to Chelsea, he will also make a strong case for being in the team (assuming Suarez has left the country).
Aguero was in my initial draft but the problem with City is nobody will be the main man this season - points will be shared amongst many.
And RVP the main issue is team balance; his fixtures are also poor. He is 3mln more than the others

All four of the uber premium strikers have clouds hanging over them, at least until the transfer window has ended (wk3).

Therefore the best strategy is wait and see. Build a team with a strong midfield and defence supplemented by budget/mid-price forwards until the air clears.
Then wildcard wk3 or wk7 once you are settled on the heavy hitting striker you want in your squad.

I've actually found myself liking a big 5 in MF (Hazard, Wally, Silva, Coutinho and Mirallas) with 2 decent strikers and cheapy. I currently have Giroud/Lukaku but haven't decided. using Gayle as my cheapy. Leaves you plenty of money to buy your defense...

just think Silva is safer than Dzeko (even though many on this board disagree), Coutinho is safer than Sturridge and Mirallas has more upside than the Kones, Hoopers, RVWs, etc.

Said another way MF/Gayle seems safer than Striker/Thomas out of the gate for me

Agree on the strategy part, but that you even consider fixtures when it comes to RvP - the most fixture proof player of all - is frightening.

      It's not that difficult really.

If you have a bunch of 9.0~ strikers and mids. You can downgrade one to a budget one like 6.5 (Bent, JRod, Snodgrass etc.) and use the funds to go 9.0 striker > 11.0.

RvP requires more deconstructing, but I think I can comfortably go without him for a good few weeks at least.

Each to their own. I don't.

Fixtures are very important, and there's no getting away from the fact ManUtd have abominable fixtures. Add on the growing pains under Moyes and you're stuck with a 14m striker who isn't going to be your captain for the first 3 gameweeks.

The only way he recoups 14m is if he's your captain and gets double figures on a fairly consistent basis.

i keep tinkering with this idea also.

however there are 3 fwd slots and i really would like to use all of them

        Suarez Sturridge x

where x = Lukaku (I think he is #1 unless Rooney comes - another reason to wait until the window closes), Bony (if form), Giroud (form and depending on Suarez), Dzeko (should he leave for say Arsenal)

Like the idea of J-Rod but would sure prefer one of those other 3, and downgrade a midfielder (say Silva --> Kagawa and a defender to make that front line as strong as possible

    Mignolet - Davis
    Mertesacker - Toure - Collins - Brayford - Chester
    Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Kim - Thomas
    RVP - Lukaku - Dzeko

    2m in bank.

-Considering Collins > Luiz/Ivan for the DGW.
-After DGW, Luiz/Ivan downgrades to Collins.
-2m to upgrade Kim to Nolan or Snodgrass, Lukaku or Dzeko to Negredo, Soldado, or Sturridge.

Any opinions or advice? I think my Mert, Toure, and Collins have a good shot at a CS, so should I just ignore Chelsea def and upgrade Kim > Nolan? Thanks.

And also not the FFS template which is better and cheaper. Mata and possibly Michu will miss GW1 due to Spanish friendly. Aside that Michu has poor fixtures. Colback....just no. Baker will not play. Baines too over priced, may not be OOP with Martinez. RVP not essential early on and too expensive. Ivan not nailed on, Cole safer, Luiz is better if you're going for a punt. Its obviously too early for RMT's but it is interesting watching them develop based purely on media spec and pre-season. Both measures, year-on-year, give us absolutely nothing to take into the competitive season.

Every early-season failure in my years playing, were based on paying attention to nonsense in the off-season instead of looking at PEDIGREE.

May seem obvious but its easy to fall into the trap. Btw Soldado HAS pedigree- it doesn't matter if he doesn't play friendlies.

Only 1.9% have Rooney right now...but are we all missing a trick ?

If he goes to Chelsea, he will be the main man...and if he stays at United, all the fuss will blow over and will still be a useful player to have.

Trouble with United, is that if you want some coverage (and it would be madness not to) then we are almost "forced" to have RVP, as he is about the only guaranteed starter. The only other players who will be nailed-on regulars will be Evra (assuming Baines does not come) and Carrick, who is defensive. We do not even know who the first choice keeper is ! Maybe Vidic will be regular...but it is anyone's guess who will be regulars in DEF and MID.

Sounds like people still think Sold without Bale is not worth it

re: Bale Leaving will improve Soldado's appeal. Everyone probably trying to find lame excuses to ignore Soldado.

Bale stopped running to flanks and putting in exceptional crosses the moment AVB took over. How often did he play through balls or assisted? (don't count the stupid FPL assists)

Soldado is a true centre forward as far as I have read. He is more likey to hook up with the mids and recieve a cross, reducing Bales need to fire them in from outside the area. He will also be there to pick up any saves and missed shots.

I think he will be good with or without Bale

Giroud, Lukaku, Dzeko - It's a popular attacking trio, but you do realize that none of them are guaranteed starters!!! If you are going to argue Giroud's case, he is nailed on, only till Arsenal find another striker, and after that he is likely to be on the bench.

Lukaku and Dzeko are decent options in my eyes.

Lukaku is an easy transfer out before the blank, and Dzeko IMO, is the best City cover to have over the first few games at least. Don't fancy Silva much as I don't see many goals in him.

Thats my starting 3, for the first few game weeks dzeko and Giroud look nailed on starters and could do very well. Lukaku is a punt but for a DGW will still get 100 minutes of playing time.

Walcott over Coutinho all day long,

Not sure I think Baines will perform like last year, in terms of FPL. I imagine less clean sheets for him. I am not sold on Giroud. I'd prefer Coutinho over Michu, fixtures and his Spanish friendly. I have the same bench 😀

    ok,

van persie scored more than one goal 3 times last season.

a hattrick against 19th place southampton, a brace against 17th place wigan and a hattrick against 17th place aston villa.

        It's okay i found it.

More than one goal in 8 matches. Even if he's not scoring like he's fixture proof, he's getting so many random assists, which just make it seem like he's a consistent source of points against every team = which is why people label him as fixture proof even if it's not literal.

Very puzzled why Gerrard is so low-down on selected midfielders. Looked where he finished last season - he is still great to have ! I guess the Coutinho effect is the reason, but let's stop and think a minute....Coutinho will do well, no doubt - but I predict now that come the end of the season, Gerrard will have as many - if not more - points than him. Gerrard will play every match, will Coutinho ? Coutinho will score more goals from open play...but Gerrard will take most of the set pieces, penalties - and do not forget the new bonus system will see him score many points for passing and tackling.

My money is on Gerrard over Coutinho any day....though I will not whisper too loud that everyone is missing a trick with overlooking Gerrard 🙂

Coutinho destroyed Gerrard at the end of last season. Played further forward, had more shots, more goals, more assists. Can't see that changing, especially with Gerrard used as more of a holding player.

Gerrard will be stuck with set pieces and penalties which is no laughing matter, but he's in effect playing more like an Arteta type player.

This is why I'm quite keen to go without. Throw the dice and get a few 2s and 3s along the way, combined with some "Cazorla last year" type picks.

Better that than just be happy with a run of games like last year where RVP kept things ticking over with an assist. Not enough for 14m really...

    Hello everyone,
have tried to put together a team which allows for some fence sitting as far as RVP is concerned:

    Mannone Boruc
Cole Mertesacker Collins Toure Yanga Mbwia
    Walcott Hazard Coutinho Snodgrass Thomas
    Lukaku Dzeko Rodriguez

    4.5 in bank
Gm wk #2 transfer Cole>Coleman 6m in bank
Gm wk #3 transfer Lukaku>RVP 0 in bank
If either RVP or Coleman price looks to be rising (keep an eye on FISO)during the week leading up to Gm wk #2 you could always take a hit and buy both at same time.
not sure what you boffins make of this strategy but any feedback will be welcome.

Will Diame start most games? And if so, has he got a goal/assist in him? Fancy him as my 5th mid....

Walcott/Silva over Michu for just the first two games? I'm not sure. Really like Michu. Class.

      Fixtures rule.

The first two are better picks to start the season.

Agree, to be honest. Just love Michu (professionally).

Congrats with the 84th finish a couple of seasons back, by the way. Respect.

Until Rooney is sold, I'm with Mirallas and Coutinho all the way. Got burned on Kagawa last year and he needs to prove it for me...

I've fallen in love with Mirallas and Coutinho. with Jelavic emerging a bit, makes Kone though and with Sturridge a bit banged up, Aspas in form and rumors of another buy (or Suarez return) Coutinho looks like the best way to play Pool's early schedule rule on the attacking side

Beginning to think all the Dzeko gametime and the "he's my top striker" comments was a clever ploy to keep the lad happy while he...sits on the bench all season 🙁
