Scout Report – Diego Lugano

West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

Looks pretty fair to me Acqua. Don't forget they do every Cup and Europe game as well.
So solid picks may do better.
I have never done well in the Sun, usually miss a transfer window or two, and with only 12TFs over the season I think you need to get off to a flyer.
Also have no injuries or bans just after you put them in 😡

Their bonus points MOTM and 7+ scores are based on the reporter's view, so good luck with that. If you read the reports you may work out where their man love lies. 😉

Right, after sleeping on it I have decided that my strategy this year is go all in on the DGW in GW1, pick a team for one GW only and then wildcard to ride bandwagons from GW2.

So looking at GW1 in isolation who are the must haves?

    Hazard
    Oscar
    Cech or Chelsea defender
    Benteke?
    Liverpool players
West Ham players (Nolan and one defender)

Camzy - your long winded post the other day got me thinking on this track. Also, upon review, I have wildcarded in the first 3 GWs every year anyway (except last and look at my history to see how that turned out) so think its about maximising opportunity in GW1.

    Thoughts....?

I am also really considering this, great for getting on bandwagons, you get a feel of which players are going to be the starters, you get a great score in GW1 and you build your team value up a lot very early. I think it's a great option, I am really tempted, rather have Lukaku in than Oscar other than that got the must haves down

    RVP Lukaku Dzeko

    GW1 = Cole>Coleman

planning transfers in advance is dangerous (unless using a WC) as what happens if injury hits or there is a massive value adding bandwagon that you simply must get on?

Love the attacking 8 but would consider other options in place of Cole (Luiz or Ivanovic) and have heard Clyne is injured (Shaw a ready made replacement or consider M Turner)

fair enough, if a -4 hit is no issue than you'll be fine. Keep an eye on the Clyne situation as there is nothing worse than pick an injured player to start the season! Good luck

Good front line if Dzeko is nailed-on.I don't think he'll be nailed-on for long if at-all. I'd downgrade Dzeko and Cole now and upgrade some defenders because if you're just adding Coleman I can't see many CS there. Get 2 x 4.5m or a 5m and 4.5 m keepers who rotate and upgrade Snodgrass.

So... I remember pre-fpl opening and anelka transferring to WBA when every man and his dog said he'd get him in if he came @ anything below 6.5. Then there were some posts about him being old now and having a bad record the past couple seasons. Well he did appear from the subs bench most of the past 2 seasons and dint really get a lot of first team football. He's fit enough to train and play every preseason game(almost) and score goals and has come in @ 5.5. I gotta admit that i ignored him uptil now too.. but i gotta say i dunno why. if i want a cheap attacker it'll be him or kim. may start of with lukaku/benteke/dzeko and then swap one out for him after a week or two though

You're absolutely right about preseason. Playing against poor opposition, many fringe players playing above their usual form to try and avoid being sold on or going out on loan. I still can't see Anelka lighing up the PL and am hoping Shane Long is the West Brom mainman.

TBH, I think Long is the main striker. After all when Lukaku was in WBA, in the beginning he came from the bench though he scored a lot. Anelka is probably will get the same role as Lukaku

Who are the deadliest strikers in the league , and who has the potential to improve?

shot conv accuracy chances per minute

    Soldado 24...................57............apx 30 (2.9 per game)no good at maths
    Berbatov..... 18..................42.................37
    Van Persie...18..................45................23
    Benteke....... 18..................38...............28
    Lulaku.......... 17...................46...............22
    Sturridge......16....................46..............19
    Dzeko...........15...................40...............21
    Rooney..........14...................38..............25
    Suarez...........12...................37..............12
    Giroud............10...................35..............23.1

After compiling this list Giroud is now out of my team. He dosent create his own chances , relies on others and normally misses. Could argue there room for improvement , but it couldnt get much worse

Soldado clearly a top draw striker , although his stats are from a differnt league . Maybe they are given more space in the spanish league? Although only Messi and Higuain were his equal last season , so expect him to be very good if he adapts to the premier league

Suarez seems be a chance generating machine , if only he could improve his conversion rate

Berbatov clearly another who if given better service could prove to be a bargain , there no premier league player of note who is better at putting the chances away , but he dosent get that many. Wil Taabaat change that? Plus he isnt getting any younger , sooner or later the stats will decline

You should put in another column there Trigger, a motivation % column. It probably won't make much difference to FF points though? Berbatov always looks lethargic to me, if he misses a few chances his head will drop whereas Suarez will keep taking shots convincing himself that the next one will be lucky. Some PL players, like De Guzman, will be extra-motivated. They're in with a chance to get in their national team who are in with a chance of going to the World Cup. It's a World Cup season, standard of football should be up with players trying to catch the eye of their national management.

I know sure, it have almost no bearing on FF points. The sports psychology of it interests me.Like Paul "The Guvnor" Ince telling the world how motivated he was to play against his former club and he had a lot of former clubs. Remember Adebayor's antics when he scored for City against Arsenal. That's just bravado.

But some players are just switched on, rippping down the dressing room door to get on the pitch. Vidic, Bale, Ronaldo. Then there's the other end of the scale. Mr Viduka, he used to get motivated at the end of March when his contract was close to renewal.

I suspect that the change of league will also knock Soldados down somewhat , but they should be at least the equal of anyone else, like i said before only Messi had better rates in la liga

Berba/Bony penciled in....Just have a feeling once Bony adjusts to the PL he might be more consistent then Berba(who can be very very frustrating to own)

Bony 49% accuracy 27% conversion rate (according to an obscure site)

Interestingly when Suarez was in the dutch league his conversion rate was only 13% very similar to his premier league rate , although he is a far better player now.

I would take Bony's with a pinch of salt , due to the poor league , but hes been scoring well for Swansea so who knows

Heres a table for the average goal conversion in the main european leagues (cant find total for dutch league)

            German league............14.9
            Spanish league............14.2
            French league ..............13.9
            Premier league..............13.7
            Italian league...................12.9

Not sure what it all means , italian defences the best or strikers the worst?

The goal conversion is the percentage of shots that are scored by the player
The shot accuracy is the percentage of shots that are on target
The minutes per chance are the time it takes for the striker to have a shot on goal

It nothing to do with creating chances for others , this is purely goal threat

I know , he looks shocking when you see the bare numbers , he dosent even have many assists either .Actually Walcott has a far better conversion rate. I may do one for the main midfielders tomorrow

Although as i have already tried to make clear these figures are all about goal threat and dont indicate the number of chances they provide for others , which could be the most important stat for the midfielders

Being generous you could put Girouds poor stats down to lack of confidence

Funnily enough when i looked to find his conversion rate before joining Arsenal i found the following, which shows the perils of trusting too much in stats from other leagues.

"just like Robin Van Persie. Olivier Giroud is extremely clinical in front of goal, and had a conversion rate of 19.8% by January end (Van Persie had a 19.2% conversion rate by then), before temporarily losing form."

imagine if Soldado had gone to Arsenal , or Higuain . They could expect a chance every 23 minutes or so , with their conversion rates they would get a massive haul.
Im not so sure Tottenham will be able to supply Soldado that many chances

This demostrates the obvious attractions of RVP and Suarez though RVP looks quite poor in comparison. Dividing 3rd column by 1st gives the following ranking of goals per minute.

Suarez/Studge/Soldado/RVP/Lukaku/Dzeko. Makes me a lot more confident about Sturridge/Lukaku picks.

      Giroud/Berbs/Roonpig to avoid.

Would be interesting to see Aguero's stats

Anyone thinking about playing a 3-5-2 with all the 9-9.5 midfielder talent available? Seeing as last year the top 10 total season scores were by 7 mids and only 3 forwards. Viable or risky?

After GW1 wildcard to something like this.

    Boruc ( Mannone )

Luiz__ Coleman __ Collins __(Parr, Brayford)

    Walcott __ Hazard(c) __ Coutinho __ Michu __ Silva

Dzeko (or Lambert) ___ Sturridge __ (Moore)

Good point.. I noticed last few seasons the more unknown players who topped the list such as Michu, Hazard etc started strong and looked good from their first game. So maybe after GW1 i can take a risk or 2 and replace one of those 9$ mids with a wildcard?
