The Burning Question – Is Lukaku A Risk Worth Taking?

Next up in our series of Burning Question articles, we cast an eye over Chelsea’s in-form Belgian forward ahead of double Gameweek 1. Home games against Hull and Villa have Romelu Lukaku firmly on Fantasy radars – currently the third most popular frontline option in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 22% ownership, plenty are willing to take a punt as they look to get quickly out the blocks.

With both Demba Ba and Fernando Torres vying for a starting berth as Jose Mourinho’s lone striker, the issue of minutes over the pair of matches is something of a concern, bearing in mind there’s a trip to Old Trafford the following Sunday. Having racked up five goals and two assists over just 256 minutes this summer, though, Lukaku’s form gives our contributors plenty to consider.

Evs says….
Quite simply, I would say yes. I am not convinced Jose Mourinho is thrilled by a poacher such as Demab Ba, and will he really turn to a second-gear Fernando Torres? I’m not having it.

Unless a move for Wayne Rooney is fast-tracked, I see Lukaku as the only real option up front for Mourinho; he can hold the ball up, bring in Chelsea’s weapons in midfield and has the ability to turn and run at opponents. The comparison with Didier Drogba is lazy but it’s also a good fit.

Lukaku’s numbers speak for themselves: 31 goals in two seasons at Anderlecht (he scored 131 goals in 93 games at youth level) plus last season at the Hawthorns he netted 17 times in 35 games – again, a ratio of a goal every other game. In his year-long spell at the Baggies, the Belgian netted six times in 15 substitute appearances including a hat-trick against United, so no worries there.

I suspect he’ll start at least one of the two matches in Gameweek 1 but, even if he doesn’t feature in the first XI in both, I will settle for 20 minutes off the bench in either – he’s explosive enough to make the difference with limited pitch-time.

Tinkerman says….
No doubt Fantasy managers will be looking at the two very favourable fixtures in the first Gameweek and anticipating a slew of goals from Chelsea. Lukaku seems to have been handed his fair share of pre-season minutes and has responded well with goals, assists and some lively performances. Jose Mourinho will surely be mindful of the fact that the Belgian outscored both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in the league last season, despite having played over 500 minutes less than either of his fellow-forwards.

Judging by Mourinho’s comments, however, rotation is a real worry and I suspect he will make full use of his squad over the double Gameweek, especially given the importance of the fixture at Old Trafford on Sunday week. This would likely see Lukaku playing significantly fewer than the 180 possible minutes over the two Gameweek 1 fixtures, with a real possibility of him starting on the bench in one of the matches against Hull and Villa.

Many will point out that he didn’t need much game time last term to rack up the goals. Regardless of this, we have to take into account the fact that starting with Lukaku leaves us facing an additional tough decision: we either bench him in Gameweek 3 (as well as having a dilemma the previous weekend when he plays against United) or use a precious transfer to swap him for another player after one or two Gameweeks. I personally think he has the potential to score well in the opening Gameweek, but I’d rather pay more attention to the prospects of alternatives who seem guaranteed to get close to 270 minutes over the first three Gameweeks and who don’t require us to factor in the use of a transfer.

Spencer says…
Looking at the Blues’ fixtures for the double Gameweek, I feel that a Chelsea forward is a must have. No disrespect to their opposition, but Hull are newly promoted and Lambert’s teams have never been the best defensively. So who are the contenders?

For all his recent gongs – the Golden Boot in Euro 2012 and this year’s Confederations Cup – Fernando Torres still fails to convince on the Premier League stage. As for Demba Ba, his 38 goals in just 80 appearances in the Premier League is impressive but I question whether he play as the lone striker role in Mourinho’s preferred formation.

That leaves Lukaku. While 17 goals in 43 appearances is less impressive than his two rivals, he is seemingly ready-made to fit Mourinho’s tactics. Big, strong, and powerful, the Belgian has all attributes that Mourinho likes in his forwards and, for me, that will see him get the minutes that will repay Fantasy investment.

Applebonkers says…
For the double Gameweek I really think so. While he seems unlikely to get 180 minutes, paying 8.0 for a striker who looks good to start at least one of the games looks a bargain – particularly if that game is against promoted Hull. As a guilty recipient of his 16 points off the bench in Gameweek 38 last season, we’ve also seen how he can impact matches without earning starts.

Beyond the double, Torres has the European experience (and goals last season) which Lukaku and Ba both lack – the Spaniard looks favourite to start the European Super Cup against Bayern Munich after Gameweek 2, adding more weight to Lukaku’s chances of going up against a United defence. We have to consider that Mourinho will have seen his hat-trick against the champions on the final day of 2012/13 and United’s rearguard will hardly relish an early re-union with Lukaku’s pace and power – as the most advanced central attacker, either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, he could still thrive on limited game time. After that, I’d consider other options. Sell for Chelsea’s blank Gameweek 3 and monitor the rotation policy.

Mark Says…
To be honest, I’m still smarting from pinning Lukaku to my bench for his final day hat-trick. Despite that, I have to consider revisiting the Belgian from the off given the double Gameweek prospects. As I’ve stated in the previous “Burning Question”, I don’t see too many of Mourinho’s men given more than 100 minutes over their two Gameweek 1 home fixtures. Even so, Lukaku has the confidence and weaponry to inflict plenty of damage given those minutes, fed ammunition by the likes of Hazard, Mata and Oscar.

I just wonder if Mourinho will opt for Lukaku at Old Trafford on Sunday week, or whether he’ll go for the experience of Fernando Torres. True enough, Lukaku’s fateful hat-trick in Gameweek 38 proved his ability to dismantle the United rearguard but the prospects at Old Trafford a week into the season look very different to that final day showpiece. If he’s kept out of that cauldron, we could be looking at limited minutes over the first three Gameweeks. With the blank to follow, a price drop could loom and suddenly, Lukaku owners will feel pushed into a change or risk losing early cash.

Having said that, Lukaku will make it into at least one of my Fantasy lineups – probably Sky Sports. I’m undecided whether that will translate to my Fantasy Premier League squad, as yet. Much depends on whether I find a place for Hazard in midfield. As I’ve mentioned previously, Chelsea’s assets come with a health risk – a ticket to frustration. I’m unsure if I want to opt for a double helping.

I find it hard to rate other peeps teams so generally kkep a low profile on that score but I can see the logic of peeps playing 6 players from the D/GW and playing the W/C straight after with there template.

If they pick 6 great scorers and get the armband correct and the other 5 non D/GW players do well then they will be off to a screamer. Why not?

Its a pity that there is only one viable AVL option... As this strategy could put you way ahead & with extra $ after only 2 GWs

        Luna? Maybe?

I half considered him for a few minutes before discarding the thought. With the initial matchups from hell, I wouldn't give anyone from AV a second thought except Benteke.

And even then, I don't want to play my WC until the transfer window closes. So I'm passing on him too.

To quote my friend the dictionary: IF - used for introducing a situation that MAY happen or may be real, especially when talking about its results...........

Firstly it is, in a practical sense, impossible to have 6 players get great scores because of a DGW when only two teams are involved. For Benteke to perform twice you instantly lose any clean sheets for Chelsea players, and vice versa if you are crazy enough to pick Villa defenders for two of their hardest games of the season.

Secondly a DGW is a DOUBLE game week..........but only if your players play twice and with none of us really knowing more than half of the Chelsea team for the first game there is no way of telling what it will look like by the second and so at this stage we are guessing.

Thirdly, who are you going to pick once you take them all out? Most likely you won't be onboard to pick up the top performing players value rises and secondly you will be judging your whole team on one weeks display and losing your ability and WC to either change this to account for any flukes and when required to take full advantage of an inevitable game week further into the season where you can have 11 PLAYERS all with a DGW.

But other than that no reason at all 😉

Yes that is clarity. I am still sure that some silly bugger will have picked 6 players from the D/GW players and will be P1 in FPL . But your post cracked me up so thanks for the laugh :):

Thinking of doubling up on Chelsea defense, which I know is not a new or groundbreaking idea, but it should allow me to upgrade a striker to RVP and downgrade my Che defenders to actually nailed on 4.5 defenders, like Mbiwa, Saylor, or Collins, when we have a better idea. Just thinking.

Just out of interest why would you put them in your team without doing the research.

We all have to put lightweights in our structure to fit in the big guns. The big difference to winning or losing your league is making a wise choice in the fodder brigade.

So I would say don't be lazy and do that research and then compare your analysis with that question.

    A. Lukaku (for the DGW)
    B. Sturridge (for long term)

Considering Lukaku for the DGW, then switching to Sturridge or Bony. If Bony scores two goals against United, I will get him, if not then it's Sturridge. I think Stoke would not be the easiest team to rip apart, so I may not miss out on too many points going with Lukaku.

It depends on the structure of the rest of your team.

      Sturridge provides much more flexibility.

Lukaku provides a chance for some good points GW1, but then causes a headache come GW 2 and 3 (depending on how many other DGW players you have).

I'd personally go Sturridge (or any nailed on forward with decent fixtures).

Make sure Boruc has easy-ish fixtures when Mignolet plays the bigger sides.. waste of money if not.
      Good defence.
Not sold on Gerrard.. he'll score fairly well but I think Coutinho has the potential to do better.
Dzeko is a risk, but one worth taking - Oscar isn't I don't think. Rotation + Blank make him a problem I think.

Doosra seems to think Adrian will be in the mix so it's not worth the risk imo

Sunderland are at home to fulham whom are terrible away so you might end up with 2 clean sheets there, Coleman doubt he will get a CS GW1 so he only has small attacking returns chance and Dawson - will he even play at?

      So i'd say 13 pts.

But seen as there all cheap thats a good return- would think you'd put a Chelsea defensive player in there though then it would almost double.

Cout, he is going to be playing in the most advanced position. Gerrard is playing double pivot as standard. EVERYTHING is going through Cout this year in terms of attacking play from Liverpool. Gerrard is not getting any younger and last season was one of his first to put a whole season together without injury and BR will be taking more and more caution with him. Cout is slowly but surely taking over set piece responsibilities. Gerrard is a risk to get injured on international duty where as Cout by in large is not included currently.

Would it be complete madness to have a midfield four of Lampard Oscar Hazard and Walcott

    Front 7 of

    Lampard Walcott Oscar Hazard(c)
    Soldado Benteke Sturridge

Between the 3 chelsea attackers you have up to 540 mins of football, and they are home to Villa and Hull.

Im still not sold on Lukaku
Im still not sold on who plays at the back besides Cole and ...Cole...meh.

Post GW1 I/you could easily bench Hazard or Oscar, downgrade Lamps and upgrade somewhere else depending on trends, and quite happily be left with one of them (or two for the season).

    Well?

Could even do Mata Hazard Oscar/Lamps

They won't all play 180 minutes each. You're looking more realistically at 300 minutes of football between them all.

You could do it, but it won't be pretty and certainly won't be worth it.

Get the 3 you think will bring the most points. Its a complete crapshot with chelsea but perhaps consider mata as well if it looks like he will play a part. Lampard can do a lot of damage to these 2 sides if he plays - Oscar is more of a risk you might as well get lukaku instead. But if you want 3 mids it would be Hazard-Lampard-Mata.

Yes for my money. Up to 540 mins is a real stretch seeing as Lamps and Oscar play in the same position.......and if you don't personally believe this then that means that Lamps is an 8.0m defensive mid! It will either cost you any potential gains in hits or else you will be left with a shocking team for GW3 and equally lose any ground you may have made.

Interesting...never thought of that option, not quite madnesss. Only problem is that if you figure CHE getting at least 1CS your are passing up on 8pts minimum on Cole. I figure he is the safest bet. I share your opinion on Lukkaku.....not sold on him either.

I've had him from day 1, but I think he'll have to go unless there is some evidence he'll play both in the DGW.

I want some City cover but can't seem to find an offensive player at good value!

I'd hold off.....one of Negredo or Dzeko will be great value, time will tell which one!

Yaya is consistent and has the ability to bomb forward and grab a goal ever so often. Can't stretch an extra 0.5 for Silva somehow?

Paulinho is a better option than both

Yeah I agree but that would make it triple Spurs coverage and no City. Could end disastrously

They both play the double pivot as defensive midfielders - when in possession one will push forward while the other stays back and I expect them to take turns in doing this - but Yaya is known for doing it and scoring whereas paulinho is new but may be out to get his first goal for City.

I feel they are the most nailed on of any city mids/forwards but will still score less points than the rotating lot overall. Silva is worth the extra 1.5mil because he is the man supplying all the assists for this very attacking ManC team and I can see them scoring a lot.

Im liking it.....like the Lallana selection. Also lots of room to twist.

Must say one of the better teams ive seen.....only hole is Lescott....maybe Zabaletta? Even Toure?

Different perspective when sorting out Liverpool defenders.....and determining the best value!

Who will score more points over the season Mignolet (5.5) or Toure (5.0)?

Mig gets the save points, depends on Toure's goal threat and if he'll be nailed on.

I would think Migs over the full season will score more points. Probably enough to cover the price difference.
