The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Looking at a plan B team with RVP this is the best I can come up with
    Migs Daniels
    Cuellar, Taylor, Ramage, Chester, Brayford
Walcott, Hazard, Michu, Coutinho, Morrison (WH)
Lukaku, Weimann, RVP ---- no cash left

Any comments are welcome (Cant decide if its better than my last team or not!)

As for Sunderland at 4.5, maybe Diakite is the way to go then, I want players from these teams to rotate....

Wait until Celustka is added to the game. Likely to come in at £4.5m and will be nailed on at RB as no competition. Brown and O'Shea will be first choice centre halves, but Brown's fitness will always be a concern. Don't go near diakite yet. He's hardly figured pre season due to injury.

I like this new fantasy football game that I came across a few days ago.

    http://fantasy.sportskeeda.com/default.aspx

The most interesting aspects of the game-

1.There are no usual captains for matchweeks (that's what they call it)
2.There's a salary system like real life and there's a salary budget of 2m in addition to the team budget of 120m.
3.Every player has a pre decided salary cap.
4.You can double/triple any player's salary (remaining within the budget of 2m) and that respective player's points get doubled/tripled as well. Which in other words mean you can have MANY CAPTAINS IN A SINGLE GW.
5.No restrictions on number of players from a single team. Would be awesome for DGWs.
6.The layout in not too bad either.
7.Similar to FPL on most other aspects.
    8. -3 for a hit.

If anyone's interested then I i'll set up a FFS league.

It was buying these players for inflated prices a few seasons ago that was bad, not the decision to get rid of them now. Sometimes it is better to accept that some decisions made in the past were mistakes and to take remedial action than to stubbornly continue to refuse to accept reality. Liverpool's transfers in and out during the current transfer window have been far more sensible than some of those made by other recent Liverpool managers (even if there is unfortunately still a problem with Luis Suarez).

Youre right about the inflated prices being the bad thing and more specifically it was having Damien Comolli and his moneyball statistics in charge of transfers that wreaked all the Havoc but Kenny was culpable too.

Getting Downing out os the right thing cos he's fairly rubbish but I think Carroll could have had his uses and a good season could have seen him go for 20m+.
Henderson may come good and give ye some good service over the coming years but its still funny to see sam get such bargains at your expense.

Apparently Carroll didn't fit the system, and I don't know whether we do actually want to sell Henderson. Peter Crouch was another who was considered not to fit the system, even though he was actually pretty successful at what he did.

Failing that I would go Mertesacker, I think he will give good value for money.

Glen Johnson is a great pick at 6mil.

LIV have a great first 10 weeks or so.
He gets forward & is certainly a threat on goal.
His price is also cheaper than most other 'heavy hitters' in the backline.

I'm not getting all this amour for Soldado. If Bale stays, Bale mops up the lions share of glory and Soldado lives off the scraps and becomes just another Defoe or Ady. If Bale goes, Spurs will surely not be the force they were last season and will end up competing with Everton for 7th place.

Ergo, Soldado is a Kone or a Jelavic in disguise but much dearer.

Include me out, I'll have Beasty Benteke until the cows come home (and at a discount!).

40 goals doesn't make anyone champions mate. I wrote an answer below, you are way off in your reckoning.

And theres no guarantee Bale will get another 20+, he may get 12 and 10/15 assists.
And however many assists he gets at least half of them will be for Soldado

          Q. Have you watched Soldado play over the last 5/6 yrs?

Bale CANNOT repeat what he did last year. If he stays, he needs help. He's pretty nifty with the pass and will be happy to have someone to pass to that can reliably put the ball in the net (something he's been missing for a good while).

If Bale stays, the conditions are clearly that Spurs make Champions' League this year or he is out. Levy has tried to spend enough to convince Bale it can happen. Tick tock.

      let's see now...

arguably best keeper in the league, certainly top 3 or 4.
thin defense, but vert arguably the best defender in the league (along with kompany and maybe one or two others) and have looked solid under AVB thusfar.
arguably the best midfield in the league in terms of strength in depth, at least alongside city and chelsea.
a top quality striker, massive upgrade on ade and defoe.

How many points was Bale worth to Tottenham last season? An inexact science I know but surely it must have been 9 or 10 at least? Possibly more? Therefore, without him, they were no better than Everton.

You cannot in any way argue that Loris is the best keeper in the league unless youre mad:)
top 3/4 is even a push
Vertonghen is good but behind about 8 others for best in league...
Midfield is crowded with mediocrity - Lennon, Sigursson, Holtby, Sandro, Livermore, Rose, Huddlestone, Townsend and the jury is out on Paulinho as far as I'm concerned...

The only difference between Spurs and Everton last season was Bale and next season......
Well a lot depends on Martinez of course but squad V squad theres little in it apart from Bale and now Soldado.

Way wrong. Way way way way wrong!

If Bale gets 20 league goals that will an awesome return for him, who you think is gonna score Tottenhams other 50 goals??? It wont be Adebayor, Dempsey is gone, Defoe never manages more than 10 (or thereabouts) and there isnt another goalscorer in the squad

This is exactly why Soldado was bought. If he stays fit its 20 goals guaranteed!!

If you give me the +/-2 and a minimum 2,850 minutes I take a bet with you 🙂

In my eyes 2850 mins is evens for 18 goals, 3000 mins is evens for 20.

I'm basing this on Benteke, Lukaku and Ba scoring 19, 17 and 15 last yr!

Probably only striker who has potential to top RVP, could quite easily get 25-30 goals with or without bale. Dont forget that Bale took a hell of a lot of shots from outside of box last season, if he stays then chance keeper saves/spills and he could mop up. If he goes then spurs will still create lots of chances

    Fellow late nighters.

I'm toying with the following combinations - either:

A/ Coutinho and Soldado - many on here think C is overpriced but if he gets the central role I'll want him in my team most of the season, S is not proven in PL but main man if Bale leaves blah blah
B/ Paulinho and Sturridge - I expect that Stoke will be soft early on away from home in particular and S could reap havoc gw1, don't know much about P tbh though

No other attackers from either team. I'm probably in the WC gw3 camp since I normally have a terrible start early doors.

What do you think - and ideally why?

    Cheers

        Mignolet & Davies
        Zabeleta, Terry, Mertesacker, Dawson, Coleman,
        Hazzard, Waclott, Mirallas, Couthino, Morrison
        Dzeko, Lukaku, Lambert

        Research complete & happy!

Nastasic will come in for Zabeleta as soon as he is fit saving 0.5M
Very keen on Ivanovic might still use him for GW 1&2 - will see who is regular starter
Will rotate with Shaw & Collins when needed - both cheaper by 0.5M
Mignolet rotated with boruc when need.

        Allow RVP

Coutinho looks great as a player and even tho I don't put a lot of stock in preseason he has done well. Soldado is away to palace and has a good chance of getting a goal against a newly promoted team.

Coutinho and Soldado would edge it for me over B,

Thanks Cheezy. I'm inclined to agree, especially over 4-5 gwks. Got a feeling Sturridge will rip up Stoke though

    This is my team currently.
    Migs (Lewis)
    Clyne Cuellar Mertesacker (Ward Brayford)
    Hazard Coutinho Walcott Silva (Thomas)
    Benteke Soldado Lukaku

    However, If walcott doesnt play...
A)I switch Cazorla with Walcott, and down grade a cardiff defender by .5
B)I swith Mata with Walcott, and downgrade Migs to the s'hampton duo
C)I switch Oscar with walcott, nd upgrade migs to hart

Which of these would you choose A,B, or C?
    Thanks in advance.

Out of the two I'd say A. Reason being is that paulinho is likely to play a deeper role. However I do have my reservations on soldado's prospects early on.

Now with Thomas injured, what are other nailed on 4.5M midfielder choices?

i don't think it'll keep him out for long, and nobody will be using him 'til at least week 3 anyway presumably, so i still vote for thomas.

Jedinak, Williams, Lucas and Meyler will all be nailed on but I prefer Meyler

@Chocolate Thunder... your team rating system yesterday was entertaining and quality. Are you still open for business?
