The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Ars. could actually have to play again to qualify If Fen. get thrown out! Bearing in mind like the Swans these extra European games count for points.

RVP is seeming harder and harder for me to keep. so basically i have come up with this.

    Migs, gazz
    Toure, coleman, turner, turner, chester

    either
    A)
    Mirillas, COUTINHO, wallcott, hazard (kim)
    ANELKA, RVP, Lukaku
    or
    B)
    Mirallas, hazard, walcott SILVA (kim)
    STURRIDGE, BENTEKE, lukaku

Thanks, would be awesome for some advice i still sway A but anelka doing my head in, is he good enough for a striker as i see them as key.

Would you take the over or under on 5.5 goals scored by Chelsea over the double?
Would you take the over or under on 1.5 goals conceded by Chelsea over the double?

Just curious about expectations for the Chelsea attack/defense overall, setting aside the rotation worries. I think I would probably take the under on both, something like 2-0 against Hull, and 3-1 against Villa.

That looks good, don't think Williams is worth 5m and certainly not with the fixtures - Clyne/Shaw/Turner for less

At the moment I still have Bale so come launch my strikeforce may be slightly beefed up. Anyway:

          Migs, Lewis
          Toure, Collins, Shaw, Turner, Chester
          Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Lampard, 4.5m

I am currently reading The Numbers Game by Anderson and Sally. Has anyone else read it and have any opinions or criticisms of it? For those who don't know it, they basically wrote a book on finding and utilizing patterns in data.

My bad, the original comment totally left out the fact that it is about the numbers game of soccer.
It advertises itself as the soccer version of Moneyball (or at least it certainly infers it), but the first two chapters at least read like a soccer-equivalent of the World is Flat when it comes to how teams score goals. However, they are both consultants for teams so I suspect they are trying to establish how soccer appears random if looked at a traditional level but some detectable and therefore pratical patterns can arise from the data if looked at the way they proclaim.

Very solid looking team I would say. I don't like Michu's fixtures enough to start the season but he will come good for sure.

I am championing picking Marshall as your back up to Migs not Boruc, reasoning below:

Has anyone had any FPL-related dreams yet this season? The other night I dreamt that Arsenal was down 1-0 to Bolton and I was extremely annoyed. It was only after I woke up that I deduced that it was not real. What a relief!
Trouble is, Arsenal will surely manage to lose to some lower-division side before too long...

To both questions above - M.Turner

Best 4.5 defender available until someone else steps out of the shadows of
        - not being nailed on (Collins of WHam, Olsson of Norwich, Yanga/STaylor of Newxastle, Sunderland - the whole mess, etc)
        and/or
        - possibly being hurt (Clyne/Shaw)
        and/or
        - being from a team destined for relegation (Crystal Palace, Hull)
        and/or
        - simply not being comparable quality (Amorebieta,, and ?)

Shaw, Clyne, and Andy Taylor at Cardiff (suspended GW1) are good 4.5s but none guaranteed for GW1

        That's my ode to Murner

        Turner is the 4.5

I can afford Ivan and Cole but I still have Terry I can't seem to shift him.. Azpi is away on international duties and imo is second choice RB to Ivanovic unless Mourinho shifts Ivan to CB role if Luiz is to leave. So Ivan will start RB against Hull. But with them playing 3 games in 8 days the latter game versus United, Jose wont want to lose that and will be putting out his strongest 11. Ivan wont play a;; 3 games in 8 days will he ? Will Ashley? Surely Azpi starts against Villa. Will Ashley play all 3??

    Mig Geezeriga
    Cole Toure Chezzy Brayford Amorabieta
    Haz Lamps Walc Snoddy Kim
    Soldado Benteke Studge

    Bank 0.5

For GW2, could either downgrade Lamps > Mirallas or upgrade Benteke > Negredo/Jovetic, depending on who's in the first team.

    Thoughts?

Think Fulham could be on the upsurge defensively with their latest signings. May not be the best fixtures, but Chezzy Bray and Amo rotate seem to rotate pretty well.

I don't know about the rotations, just have Collins, Shaw/Clyne and Turner as I think they'll all be defensively solid and they have good fixtures.

I've never confident about Fulham's defence with Jol in charge. He's an attacking manager and the clean sheets have dropped both seasons with him there. A team with Berbatov, Taarabt and Ruiz in it will be lacking in work rate.

Brayford might not be the best at defending but he is versatile. Hardly made any mistakes at Derby last season. Nailed on methinks

Even if he plays the home games, I'd take that as in a 3 way rotation that's where I'd play him.

Murner is nailed on, only risk is that the transfer window is still open. There was talk of Noriwch wanting a new CB a while ago but its gone completely dead so he seems fine. I reckon Collins is fine.

Shaw/Clyne might miss the start but barring any surprises its not a problem for me if they miss GW1. Need an update on them from the Friday pressers.

      Sorry but Lampard...?

Go with Davis. Don't listen to rookies, more players has him more need to sell him so when casual players lose interest Davis will still be high owned player. Gaz could drop in price and also is third choice. Davis could even come into contention sometimes in the season.

Even Evs gave up on Brayford, go Burner if u must. Chester there. Good. Amoraibeta magnet card mate don't go there. Fixtures not good defensively and are u sure he is first choice..?

      Other than that good.

p.s;. I am not the patient manager regarding Snoddy. U need to keep him for 10 weeks. Will u be able to do it..? In order to gain some pts from him.

You're a really smart lad Daniel. No doubt you're the Special One! Thanks for the feedback man.

Never thought about that point regarding Davis where he shouldn't fall, great one.

Who would you suggest instead of Snoddy? Have 6.5 budget for my 4th mid

Lambert & Michu? Last year this time, were there many on this site who predicted their performance correctly? Or had them in their squad pre-season?

I had Michu in from the start last year. Lambert about half way or so.

I think that both will have a good season. Might take a few weeks for Michu to shine, though, with his fixtures.

I had Michu from the start on FPL and I picked Lambert in my drafted league with an absolute hero 120th pick 🙂

I had Michu in a La Liga fantasy game 2 years ago so put him right in my team last year. Of course I also had Taraabt for GW1.

    Which is better

    A) Ivanovic, Kolo and M.Turner
    B) Terry, Zaba and Chester

      A.

Kolo is great value. Ivan should start more than Terry. Turner is better than Chester.

I'd say Ivan -> Zab after GW1, though.

Yea but I already have Migs and Coutinho. Even as a lfc supporter I'm a bit weary on tripling up on liverpool players and doubling up on their defence

Best of luck! What happened to getting Yanga-Mbiwa?
I think that is the first time that I've seen Barkley in any team. Pure bench fodder?
Rat is due to collins' injury, I suppose?
      Great team...
Out of curiosity, how different would it be if you had planned to keep the wc?
