Season Predictions 2013/14 – The View From The Scouts

We wanted to post this before deadline this morning but, due to our technical issues, we were unable to take that opportunity. Rather than waste the chance to embarrass ourselves, however, we thought we’d stick these up this evening, regardless.

Last season many of us were left red-faced thanks to our terrible predictions for the 2012/13 season.

I was left particularly embarrassed with my now laughable assertion that Charles N’Zogbia would be last season’s best differential. Meanwhile Granville’s predictions that Sam Alladyce would be the first boss to bite the bullet and Shinji Kagawa would be the season’s top assister also failed to materialise.

Credit though went to Anorak for correctly predicting that Michu would be the year’s star budget midfielder. Hard to believe the attacking midfielder was initially priced at just 6.5m at the start of last season. Mark’s prediction that Rickie Lambert would shine in the budget forward category also proved correct.

But enough of last year, here’s our thoughts on the season ahead for you to bookmark and use to embarrass/congratulate us as the season progresses.

Moderator Evs knows all about Top 5s, he was a top 5 player at the end the FPL 2012/13 season and was even in with a shout of winning the competition on the final day. Will his experience reap dividends when it comes to predicting the 2013/14 season?

Wow Triggerlips, our teams are so similar haha.

Exactly the same fund distribution. Only differences are:

    Sturridge v Benteke
    Silva v Coutinho

And differences in our bench fodder.

I'm swapping him for Coleman. I Everton are going to keep any clean sheets this season, they may come in these next few matches. And ultimately you're buying him for his attacking prowess, which as he showed today, can be rather valuable even when the team is conceding.

Unfortunately, I'm basically resigned to taking a hit either this week or next, otherwise GW3 I'm playing a 4-4-2 with several defenders away as a result of that transfer combined with my DGW picks.

Yeah that was tough luck but honestly, if I was doing it (Purely subjectively on who I thought were the three players) I would have given Begovic 3, Mignolet 2, and Sturridge probably 1. So I'm not too upset really. Mostly I'm just mad that I brought Sturridge in for Benteke 5 minutes before the deadline.

Haha ya that's the way I saw it too lol.

Ya I have no idea regarding Chelsea's lineups, I figured chances are that even if a defender played twice that they will only keep one clean, so I just went with the 2 safest attacking options IMO though I was leaning towards getting Oscar as well but decided to go with Silva instead.

I know there was a lot of talk about friendlies affecting picks, but these guys are professional athletes at the start of a campaign. I didn't think any team would seriously consider dropping a big name for the opening game, especially Arsenal with their relative lack of depth (compared to say City or Chelsea).

          I guess that's why i'm not a football manager.

So, assuming most of you guys have 3 Chelsea players at the moment, who are you looking to swap on and get in?

I've got Hazard, Lukaku and Terry. Plan is to drop Lukaku for Bony, Terry for a 4.5-5 (undecided who) and keep Haz. Of course, that is dependent on performances etc.

Was pleased to see Bony pick up a goal, if he's scoring against United he should be a good pick for the season. Did anyone see the United game? How was Bony overall?

A City forward. Can't overlook them with Cardiff and Hull up next following the Magpies game. Bony is in the cards but probably a little too soon.

Bony had couple of good chances. Overall, he did not too bad, I'd say.

Bony linked up well with Michu. He had glanced a couple well-timed headers wide right before scoring, which came from a first-time shot that was about the only open shot Swansea had inside United penalty box in the second half.

I really like Bony from what I saw in the two Europa League matches. This guy is competent in the air and hold the ball up front as a centre forward but also has good passing and an already-decent understanding with teammates. Should be getting 15-20 goals this season if he stays healthy.

Not at the moment. Might swap him with Lukaku or Dzeko in a couple of GWs. I think he will be more a Suarez than an Alves or Kezman because like Suarez, Bony is not just a finisher but understands and contributes to the goal-creation process as well.

It has nothing to do with sorting. Stragglers joining the league after GW1 deadline would have accrued 0 point for this fixture. Therefore the difference between your GW ranking and the overall ranking is likely the number of tardy managers.

Good punt as a 5th in that case, next 2 fixtures aren't too bad although a home game would be nice. Better than my punt on Ravel!

Coutinho over nolan and Giroud over Anelka. How can you even compare Anelka and Giroud?

Im not im comparing the combo. Coutinho will out score nolan, and giroud anelka but combined?? That was the question. Its really not that difficult to grasp!

"Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gibbs, Sagna. Gibbs has a deep cut. Sagna and Rosicky have problems. Wilshere - I don't know how he will respond after the full 90 minutes. Ramsey has a problem after a kick at his ankle."

Whoa that's potentially 7 players out of the 11 (incl Kosc) who started today.

      Whittaker I'd imagine:

      4.0
      90mins
      1 goal
      1 assist
      1 BP
      Hull next up.

            Nope. I also have:

            Koscielny, Wilshere, Giroud
            Mignolet, Toure, Coutinho
            Ivanovic, Hazard, Lukaku

            I'm a gooner.

Wow - so that's a tactic? Pick a team you think will have a good run and load up on the players? Is this a long term approach, or you're looking to WC to a more spread out team sometime soon?

                No.

I doubled up on Liverpool defense because I think they will be the meanest this season and Toure is great value. I think Coutinho is good value also.

I picked Koscielny because I believed in Arsenal's defense, and he's a goal threat. I picked Jack because I believe he will be the differential of the season and I picked Giroud because I believe he will be the top scorer this season.

I chose 3 Chelsea players because they have a double gameweek against weak opposition.

I chose RVW over Bony because he was cheaper than Bony and I needed the 1m to fund my midfield and Ivanovic. I chose Snodgrass because of his amazing numbers last season. I chose Ohlson because the scouts tipped him. I had Garrido. Wish I'd stuck with Shaw, who was in my team from the start until two days ago.

I'd get Mertesacker, but I worry about Arsenal's stability at the back with Jenkinson being their only recognised fullback and their star centre back being suspended. Anyhow, dropping to 2 Arsenal players will allow me to get Walcott in when I transfer Hazard out before the GW3 blank. I'll keep Ivan and Lukaku for the blank.

So, is there anyone better than Luke Shaw?

Sitting on 59 points so far with Soldado, Dawson, Hazard, and Benteke(c) still to go. Think it'll end up okay? Slightly worried that everyone and their uncle have captained Hazard, and have more double double gameweekers than me.
