The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

    Hey lads,

Just popped in to say hi. I'm in the top 2 percent already and I ought to be closer to my season goal of the top one percent if Chelsea keep another clean sheet. It's just a matter of staying up!

Quick question: Do y'all think Welbeck will be worth it in the long run? And could he rise above his historical high of 7.8?

    Kudos! 😀

He's one to watch definitely. There are just so many good options for those three spots up front. At the moment not taking a punt on him but as a non RVP owner he might make it to my team at some point.

I like Sturridge a lot. Coutinho is my Liverpool cover, for now. He and Oscar are little geniuses. It's great to see them pulling the strings.

I think Benteke got very lucky in his first game. Really, he should have drilled the spot kick but it was an easy tap in for a fella of his height. His second goal wasn't entirely convincing, for me, as Arsenal had well and truly self-imploded by then. For Tekkers, the proof will be in the pudding.

Soldado, on the other hand, is a bonefied scorer from inside and outside the 18-yard box. My only thoughts are that EPL defenders are markedly better than their Spanish counterparts. So, I'll probably just stick with Lennon as Spurs cover.

As for Lukaku, I think it's a bit early to tell. Torres looked really good at times but I think it's fair to say the Belgian will get his fair share of minutes. Lukaku seems to be a bit of a gamble. And I don't usually like gambles. Except when Mourinho is involved! 😉

God speed to you, good sir!

I know. I've seen that compilation.

However, he is a threat to break open the defense on the counter. That's what I mean when I say he's a threat from inside and outside.

He's not a long shot taker. Not by any means.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be out for the season with a knee injury. Massive loss as he was their best player vs Villa. Also goes his chances of featuring in the WC.

What I am thinking is Cole may be a viable cover for Chelsea to get the CS points. The other defenders are all rotation risk. So it comes down to Cole or Cech.

I have him and was surprised at the bonus. Guess he made a lot of blocks/clearances etc. But yeah, i'm keeping for the seaon, there won't be many teams keeping more clean sheets than Chelsea this year, he's nailed on, and went forward quite a bit yesterday, although not as much as Ivan.

Re-post (bottom on last page and only 1 reply)

No love for Joe Cole for that kind of performance?

Currently i have Nolan (my only big performer this week), but i think Hazard to Joe Cole, though it sounds too knee-jerky, is the best move for me for several reasons:

    1. WHU fixtures are very good that i think doubling on up their attacker is not a bad idea. Nolan & J.Cole are both nailed on, and if you watch the former's goal, he was in the striker's position while the latter is on some set-pieces as well.

    2. 2.5 itb + 4.0 from this transfer allows me to do direct Lukaku to RVP transfer later on.

    3. If i do Nolan > other on-form midfielder (if any) at his price range (eg. HBA, snod, SUN mids, kdb), i'd still have a WHU attacker.

    4. I tend to play with 3 strikers and WHU mid rotates perfectly with Kim, my 5th midfielder.

    5. i used to think that Hazard is a season keeper, but after watching the game yesterday, i think CHE mid is too much a minefield for selection and he can be so frustrating to own when he's off form. At 9.5m, i expect my player to be the key player in his team (Wally, Cout, etc.).

I know not many people will consider this, but i think players who have form + fixtures should be considered highly, despite his old age. Hey, even Ryan Giggs is not a bad shout now at 5.5m 😉

I think I'd prefer Jarvis to Cole. Based on what I've heard Cole's position is under more threat from Downing. I don't really know for sure though.

Jarvis is also a good shout, but it's him who paved way for Downing. People say avoid JArvis/J.Cole when Carroll is out as there's no one to get to the end of the crosses, but i think WHU players would do well in the next few GWs.

I'm thinking about bringing Mirallas in for Hazard/Lampard. I still think he'll be by far the best midpriced midfield option assuming a) He can stay fit b) one of the Manchester United options blows up.

So I was thinking whether or not it's worth bringing RVP in for GW 4. RVP + Kim = 19m, Soldado/Benteke/Sturridge + Hazard/Walcott = 18.5/19m, so about the same price if we consider the possible fluctuations. I reckon both pairs will manage about 45 goals and assists this season, but it would be much easier to choose your captain every gameweek, right?

Taking GW4 as an exmaple, without RVP (vs CPL), do you feel comfortable to captain Soldado (vs NOR)?

You just need to answer this question, then you will know what to do for the season.

In my opinion, no. Don't really know who he is and with the current striking options at SOT I feel like he might be moved to the left like Ba was last season (Ba had an awful second half of the season) when Cisse came. Rickie, after all, is still the boss and will occupy the center.

Who to transfer lukaku out for? I have 1.5 in the bank

    Current attack is:

    Cabaye/Walcott/hazard/miraillas/Kim

    Sturridge/soldado/lukaku

    Ideas? Giroud? Lambert? Welbeck?

Was anyone else impressed with chadli's nose for net at Palace yesterday. He is quick, deft and has a cracker of a shot. ITs going to take a bit to sort out the prospects for the Spurs mid, will Sigurdson fill the 10 hole role, can Lennon get some quality balls in. But this Chadli kid wants goals.

hey DZ! how's everyone shaping up this week?

currently happy with my 71 points/34k rank, but never too early to look to the next GW

    Migs
    Terry Coleman Turner
    Hazard Coutinho Mirallas Kim
    RVP Soldado Lukaku
    Subs: Daniels Cabral Chester Turner

Like many others I'm looking for a Lukaku replacement...Lambert was looking like my top target but this Osvaldo transfer shakes things up. Welbeck is also on my radar along with Giroud and Sturridge if I can squeeze out some money from Terry/Hazard transfers. Too many striker options from City to make Dzeko worthwhile imo.

So Lukaku owners--who are you lining up as a replacement?

      well done.

I'm having RVP for that spot, especially if Dzeko (my other striker) gets to nail his place in the City forward line.

Who are you lining up as Haz replacement, if you must?

well played last season, that 5k mark gets harder to break into every year!

I just can't see Dzeko nailing down that spot, esp. with Pelligrini comments from earlier that "Part of [his] job is to manage the fitness and freshness of the players..."
Aguero nearing fitness and Negredo in the picture...Jovetic will get run outs as well.

As for a Hazard replacement...I'm waiting to see who establishes themselves as the big hitters in midfield. Glad I already have Coutinho--I think he's set for a big season. Walcott and Silva are on my radar, or I may downgrade to Nolan.

My plan as of now is to save a transfer and do Terry and Lukaku to Collins/Shaw and Studge GW3...

Was traveling right before the weekend started and completely forgot about my team.

3 of my players didn't play, 3 got 1 point, and the only thing that's keeping me close to the average is mistakenly (at the time I thought it was) captaining Cech.

That leaves me with 3 players that won't play, and 4 players without a fixture GW3. Unfortunately, I feel like my hand was forced on this one. WC played.

Not the best of starts, but we'll see. I picked Lukaku against my better judgement, but he's still got a game in him this week. With so many midfield and forward options I just feel like Chelsea is a fantasy Russian roulette. You're going to get it sometimes, but others you're going to get burned.

I'm thinking the cheaper midfield options this year might be worth a shout. Nolan keeping it up and if HBA hits the ground running it could make up for a rotating Chelsea midfield. Oh well. Off to the pub to drown my fantasy sorrows =P

Have 3 Chelsea and thinking now of banking the GW2 transfer. Don't see any obvious must-have fixtures (city if I can figure out who to get?) and two transfers gives a lot more flexibility. Plus there will be a whole new set of bandwagons by GW 3.

You can check on totalfpl and fiso crack the code, no need to worry. They need a few days or so to benchmark for the new season but even so they will tell you that you have kneejerked and there was no danger of RvP rising. He is about 20% of the way to rising.

Every southampton fan i've heard of is ecstatic that osvaldo has signed. Cant quite believe they managed to get an italian international! scored 27 goals for Roma in 55 games over the past 2 seasons and 20 in 44 for espanyol. Straight into my team with those fixtures. Unlike many on here it is'nt a shoe in that lambert will continue to be the main man and i'm pretty sure osvaldo will have a grand season

Every Soton fan i know are ecstatic that they managed to get osvaldo. An italian international who's scored 27 goals in 55 for Roma! come on.. tbh i think the reason fpl underpriced lambert is cause they were expecting a new striker to come in and i do believe osvaldo will be the main man and priced @ 8+ ... Now officially a wait and see with lambert but it's temptin to put osvaldo straight in

    A word of caution again

Wonder if saving the FT will be the best move this week?

    - 2FTs for GW3 is going to be like gold dust if Bale stays back or Rooney makes a move.
    - Give your fantasy assets some time to prove themselves
    - Take some time to observe the ones you don't have. The likes of Mata, Kagawa, Silva, etc haven't even featured yet.
