The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Gameweek aside anyone else concerned about owning Chelsea assets ? Looking at all the options at Jose disposal there is going to be more than a hint of " rafa rotation"

Will hazard justify that 9.5 mil price tag ? Not on yesterday's performance and especially with lamps and probably mata hogging the set pieces.

Too early to tell. He looked alright, created a few chances but seemed to be pulled deeper and deeper when we stopped attacking halfway through the first half. THAT was the problem, not Hazard's performance.

        Thanks Dogba

You make a good point there. If Chelsea's style of play continues to be more defensive then it will have an impact on players such as hazard. Personally I would rather have JT than him at the moment.

The opening 25 minutes I thought Hazard was on course for a 20+ score and then he (and so did the Chelsea team) kind of died down, controlled the game and just saw it out really.

Having captained Lukaku (my lowest scoring player), am desperate to get rid - best option at £8m or less? (already have RVP/ Soldado).
Despite this, pleased with my 90pts (Oscar/ Lukaku left for DGW fixture)...

Utd bid for Baines & Fellaini 😯

I expect a lot of transfers over the next 2 weeks.

    Keep your FPL trannies.

Baines is now essesntial, OOP, winger!

Barkley will now be essential too!!

    Fellaini needs a haircut!! Essential!!

    BPS thoughts:
    - In general it looks like there will be many more BPS available to all players given the huge numbers of ties (a whopping 65 over the 9 games so far, eg 1.2 extra per game than the expected 6)
    - Defenders in particular seem to be favoured, particularly in terms of the multiple awards for joint 1st/2nd places

Does this raise the possibility for 4-3-3 being a genuine consideration for some gameweeks? Two cheap mids gives a route to RVP and also provides a way to bolster the defence slightly.

When do you think you'll WC? If not for a long time then I'd go Hart, but if, say, in 4-6 weeks you plan to do so, I'd go Krul.

thanks all. Don't fancy Boruc as will only have 1 keeper. Will wait until after tonights game in any case. No plans for wildcard, so it could be anytime. A decent display tonight from Newcastle could leave me further tempted by Krul, otherwise Hart may be the best option

    How's this 'RVP team' look?

    Mignolet (4.0)
    Toure, Coleman, Collins (4.0, 4.0)
    Hazard, Silva, Mirallas, Nolan (4.5)
    RVP, Benteke, Lambert

Any improvements needed? Whilst keeping RVP....

    Cheers

With regards to my CHE players, Lukaku out this week was always the plan for many people. It still is for me.

Having seen Jedinak perform, I'm more than happy for him to replace Hazard for GW3.

Good article, should also mention about JT making the XI.

On JT, the plans were to trade this week for Mert. However, I can't see our defense being so strong this week. Thus, is it right to jump on the Coleman bandwagon?

Does anyone else think Sigurdsson could be great value at 7.0? I can't see anyone else challenging his position in the hole. He could be a decent pick and alternative to Soldado with Spurs' kind run of fixtures over the next few weeks.

    - No point going with Mingolet when you can have toure for .5 less
    - Shaw not likely to start.
    - Collins is injured.
    - we can get Coleman in a few weeks.
    - Ivanabich will return more points ....
    - Nolan can't score without Carroll
    - Hazzard tips the captain poll with 67% ish ....
    - Lukaka is the new Drogba in Joses eyes
    - Man utd opening fixtures are tough
    - and therefore we don't need Rvp.

-I think 0.5m more is the price to pay for a nailed on player. If you look almost all the Goalkeepers of every team there are the highest priced defensive unit (Bar Liverpool and Everton: Baines).
Thus I think both Mignolet and Toure offer good value, 0.5m more is piece of mind knowing he will never lose his place.

-Shaw was injured yet he played? Don't think he would of been risked if he was injured

-Collins was injured and played? Shows how much Allardyce trusts him.

      -Agreed If he starts!

-Nolan can score without Caroll and did so through the first half of last season and 2010/11

-Polls are the lowest form of statistics

      - Agreed!

Is Koscielny worth keeping guys? I am thinking of transferring him out for Coleman..

He's banned next game and Arsenal are not looking as a team that will keep so many clean sheets this season considering they haven't strengthen their squad very well this summer so far and also have Champions League football to concentrate on.

I'm a little worried about the impact of Soton signing Osvaldo. Does this mean Lambert to be played a little more withdrawn and JRod reverting back to the wing, hence a negative impact on both?
