Scout Scribbles – Mata Set for Villa Return

Chelsea’s David Luiz will miss out but Juan Mata is ready to return for tonight’s Bridge encounter with Villa. Sandro steps up his injury recovery. Norwich’s Sebastian Bassong also edges closer to a comeback, while Arsene Wenger’s walking wounded get patched up in time for tonight’s Champions League playoff.

Luiz Remains Sidelined But Mata’s Back

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that defender David Luiz is still recovering from a hamstring injury. The Brazilian is unavailable for tonight’s game against Aston Villa and should return to full training next week.

“Normally David Luiz should be available for next week. He is not yet with the group, he is training with fitness coaches and physios. He is better but not yet ready.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Juan Mata says he has recovered from a minor muscle injury picked up during pre-season training in America and hopes to play a part in the Villa game. Mata explained:

“I came back, worked with the physios and on Thursday last week trained with the team for the first time, not at 100 per cent, but trying to get to my best and now I feel better and am looking forward to playing and starting my season.”

Significantly, Mourinho focused on his three attacking midfielders in yesterday’s press conference. Acknowledging that a lack of energy was obvious in the second-half against Hull, he went on to underline the fact that he has a trio of alternatives to swap in to help with potential fatigue issues…

“Because the score was 2-0 I didn’t want to change immediately but you could see when I put Schurrle and Lukaku on, the team gave a little push that made a difference to that second half – but we have to try because it is a style of play very adapted to the qualities of our players, not to three of them but to six because we play with three but we have Moses and Mata and Schurrle for the same positions, so even with a busy schedule we can use rotation and keep this same profile of players.”

The Scout Says: Luiz’s absence offers greater security for owners of John Terry and Gary Cahill who look set to continue in defence against Aston Villa tonight, while Monday night’s trip to Old Trafford also looks too early for Luiz. With no other injuries among the first team regulars, there remains a question mark over Branislav Ivanović’s place at right back, with César Azpilicueta now available. Ivanovic could shift to a central defensive role this evening, perhaps for Terry who could be preserved for Monday’s clash. Mourinho certainly can’t take too many risks in his rearguard against visitors Villa who, following the win at Arsenal, have scored in 10 of their last 11 league outings.

Mata looks a shoo-in for a substitute appearance in the Villa game at least, with Mourinho surely hoping the Spaniard can return to the first XI for Old Trafford. Mata’s return is likely to lead to a bench role for Kevin De Bruyne, who occupied the right wing berth at Hull. This is a position Mourinho has penciled in for the left-footed Mata. Eden Hazard’s start is also in question with Andre Schurrle available on the left and perhaps even Victor Moses a factor. However, with Oscar perhaps the more likely to make way, Hazard’s owners will go into tonight’s game optimistic that the Belgian will play some part. The same can be said for Romelu Lukaku who showed enough intent from the bench against Hull to warrant a start for tonight’s clash; Demba Ba does present another option for Mourinho, however.

Sandro steps up recovery

Brazilian midfielder Sandro played 67 minutes for Tottenham’s under-21 side as he continues his return to fitness from a knee injury that had sidelined him since January. The 24-year old earned an assist, which was watched by Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas and technical director Franco Baldini. This latest outing for Sandro follows a brief substitute appearance in Spurs’ final pre-season friendly against Espanyol.

The Scout Says: This run out for the Spurs defensive midfielder brings his inclusion in the first XI a step closer. A bench role looks more likely against Swansea this weekend, but it is not inconceivable that Villas-Boas may consider a starting role for the midfielder, who has made 62 appearances for Spurs since joining in 2010. This could herald a period of rotation in the Spurs midfield, which is already bristling with talent following the signing of Etienne Capoue earlier this month. If Villas-Boas continues with the 4-2-3-1 formation against Crystal Palace that leaves Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Sandro and Etienne Capoue competing for just two central midfield roles. However, Sandro’s return could also allow Villas Boas to switch to a 4-3-3 formation, meaning just one of that quartet will miss out with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s role behind the striker perhaps under threat from Paulinho who could be pushed further forward in a 4-3-3. Indeed, with rumours circulating of bids for both Willian and Erik Lamela amid the likely departure of Gareth Bale, Fantasy managers may decide to steer clear of the Spurs midfield until the transfer window slams shut and we are afforded a clearer assessment of the situation – in the meantime, Roberto Soldado looks the obvious option ahead of Sunday’s home clash with Swansea.

Bassong Close To First Team Return

Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong played the full 90 minutes against Aston Villas in an Under 21 clash this week. This was the centre-back’s second game for the Canaries’ second string side this month, having played an hour against Stoke’s reserves last week.

The Scout Says: With 150 minutes of football now under his belt, team captain Bassong is almost certain to reclaim his place at the heart of the Norwich defence this weekend when the Canaries travel to Hull. After leaking two goals against Everton last weekend, Norwich’s defence could certainly do with his presence. This could be bad news for Russell Martin or Michael Turner. Manager Chris Hughton’s options include shifting club captain Martin to right back, a move that would seem harsh on Steven Whittaker, who scored one and laid on another in the 2-2 with the Toffees. Alternatively, Hughton may decide to bench Turner against his former club to allow Bassong to return. Owners of Whittaker, Turner and Martin face a nervous wait for Norwich’s next teamsheet with the smart money on the recent Whittaker investors being disappointed.

Gunners Patched For Turkey Trip

Despite picking up knocks during the 3-1 Emirates defeat against Aston Villa at the weekend, Bacary Sagna and Keiran Gibbs should be available for tonight’s Champion’s League qualifier against Fenerbahce in Turkey. Gibbs has recovered from a cut above the eye and Sagna avoided serious injury after falling awkwardly. Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky have also shaken off knocks and long term absentee Nacho Monreal is expected to return to the squad.

The Scout Says: Despite these key players emerging unscathed from the Aston Villa clash the Arsenal squad is still threadbare going into this crucial Champions League clash and the weekend’s trip to Fulham. Long terms injuries to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mikel Arteta and Thomas Vermaelen together with Laurent Koscielny’s one-match ban for two yellows against Villa, leave Wenger woefully short of options. The Arsenal manager can ill afford to rest stars like Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla or Olivier Giroud for tonight’s first leg and you have to question just what impact this will have come Saturday. Arsenal are the first in action at the weekend, kicking off at 12.45 at the Cottage, despite having to endure the rigours of tonight’s clash and the journey back.

City Continue to Sweat On Kompany Injury

Man City were forced to postpone scans on Vincent Kompany’s groin injury and are still uncertain as to the extent of the damage sustained. Reports suggests that the City skipper may have suffered a tear which would keep the Belgian sidelined until after the international break. We are due to find out more later today.

The Scout Says: The optimistic view is that City have lost Kompany for at least a fortnight which will see him miss the matches at Cardiff and against Hull – two prime candidates for City clean sheets. With the international break, there is a chance that Kompany could be back in the reckoning for the Gameweek 4 trip to Stoke – hardly a fixture designed to ease a player back from injury. There is, however, the issue of Belgium’s World Cup Qualifier with Scotland which could spark a club vs country battle.

Kompany’s absence will come as a bitter blow to City and his Fantasy owners alike. Manuel Pellegrini can, at least, welcome back Matija Nastasic to training and he could even come into contention for the trip to Wales. With Micah Richards sidelined, the Chilean’s options are certainly limited and that may deter any investment in the City defence during Kompany’s absence, despite the clean sheet against the Magpies. Pablo Zabaleta remains the key target for those seeking to gamble on City’s rearguard without Kompany’s assured presence.

I think you should sell Cech when you have a chance to save 1.0 to 1.5m. HBA is a punt at best as Newcastle are going to struggle until their squad settles down. I can't see Aguero + Dzeko doing well against Cardiff, with Jovetic to come in and Negredo being slowly drafted in also.

Surely both Dzeko and Aguero are likely to start vs Cardiff? At worst Aguero start with Dzeko getting 20 minutes?

Cardiff looked completely out of their depth against West Ham last week, let alone Man City..

It's still up in the air at Man City as Jovetic and Negredo are being drafted in, which means one of Dzeko or Aguero will get less of a game, and Aguero still isn't 100% which may mean he still gets 60 mins. Just my opinion but Dzeko played well the other night but failed to take any chances.

Utd are such a one man team.

I look at their team & the only player that would get into the City & Chelsea starting 11 is RVP.

If RVP gets injured, they'd most likely get relegated.

            I'm a QPR fan and I disagree.

De Gae, Evra, Vidic, Kagawa, RVP and Rooney could all easily start for City and Chelsea. Indeed, Chelsea want to buy Rooney, I assume not to sit on their bench.

The City teams RONH's creaming his nappies over have failed miserably in Europe up to now, so hardly a shining example for him to point to in comparison.

If it was just about RVP then why did Arsenal never win the league when they had him and Cesc?

                Child, please.

Cech is not a million times better than De Gea at all.

General consensus was that by end of last season De Gea was playing better than any other keeper. Cech made howlers too last season. DDG has best part of his career ahead of him. Cech doesn't.

Cole is best LB in league but you could play Vidic over Terry or Cahill easily.

                Evra better RB than Ivan.

Even good players get rotated as Mata, Haz and Oscar owners will find out.

Lets not even go there regarding whether Rooney is better than anything Chelsea has up front. And if Dzeko starts for City Rooney certainly would.

Cech is better than DeGea, noone can question that at all.

Chelsea can rotate their players, as they have a great squad, Utd do not, I agree with you on that.

City's 4 Strikers are definitely better than Utd's 4 strikers!!

City and Chelsea got knocked out of the group stage,n Arsenal hmm i am not gonna comment much..done shit ?

You can't argue that over the last few years United have had an overwhelming majority of 50/50's go their way

Partly ref's faults being influenced by the Man Utd badge and partly down to Fergie being able to pick and choose referees, not quite the conspiracy mentioned further up here but he definitely had a stronger influence than he should
But United won the league fair and square last year and were unlucky in the CL, although I think that Nani red card wasn't as ridiculous as people say, by the letter of the law it was a red card really, massive over reaction

We can all moan one way or the other but with fergie gone and the improving squads in the top 5 or 6 this year we're in for an absolute treat of a title race this year!

Aguero will be switched, maybe not as much as others. But he will be.
Suarez is a card magnet and as last season proved he can have major flops. Not a confident (C) for me.

I am going Sturridge, Benteke, Soldado.

Add into the equation (I think!):

      2 WC Qualifiers for Holland
      Palace at home
Champions League midweek (Moyes' first 'proper' CL game)
      Man City

Nice little spot for a sit on the bench is that Palace game...

But 4 home in 6 vs pish = captain default for safety.

Currently I have Aguero Soldado Lambert

Aguero will go to RVP week 4

Week 11, RVP will be out. Suarez looks appealing that week.

It is important to not go to far price away from RVP in my view.
Always have Aguero, Suarez (rooney even) or rvp.

I really don't care one way or the other.

But one week is not enough time to determine whether having him or not having him is going to be the better option.

People will be able to have more 'rounded out' teams without RVP for sure. No one is arguing that.

But that does not necessarily mean that the non RVP teams will score more points over 38 games than teams with RVP in.

For one thing, captaincy risks become more of a gamble without RVP. We all know that in the end the right or wrong captaincy choices will determine your season. Those without RVP are gambling that their captain choice is going to perform as well as RVP in any given gameweek.

This week, RVP is still outscoring virtually every "RVP replacement' player who had supposedly better fixtures than him, including guys with DGW's who still have one more game left and may still not match his score.

You pays your money and takes your choice, as Colin Welland once famously said.

Ive gone without RVP very deliberately, I want to see how things are looking under Moyes and I want to see where the value players are that will make having RVP a truly viable option. My plan is still to hop on for GW4, but this is dependent on the previous factors mentioned as well as price.

However, Im encouraged by City's display on Monday that another viable captaincy option to RVP may yet be possible.

The key thing for me is that his price hasn't boomed despite scoring 2 goals in the opener. My main fear in starting without him was that he'd become (even more) unaffordable very quickly if he scored in the first couple of games.

I'd be bricking it going into CPL without him - don't think he'll be rested early on - but as you rightly point out there are definitely other options. Great post.

Sessegnon is still being rumoured to be sold. Barkley will start against West Brom and is currently probably the best 4.5m. His price will rise which will make it easier if you want to sell, but Gibson will come back in and eventually retain his place. It depends what you are looking for. Nolan is better at 7.0m or Snodgrass at 6.5m.

    @Tomfysh

I have RVP Soldado and Dzeko at the moment. My mid is Brady, Noble, Snodgrass, Haz and Theo.

I think people forget that Snods outscored a lot of far more expensive mids last season and has better strikers to feed now this season. at his price he's perfect 3rd mid if you have RVP.

Noble is a decent mid who, if he stays fit, should score 100 points easily and on Wham pens and FK's. People just look at all the £9m mids and forget that there are decent options in the mid range bracket.

        Collins, Shaw, Coleman, Whitaker, 4.0

Lambert to be excellent value? Half reconsidering my want to do Lukaku > Dzeko. Thoughts?

I had always planned to do Lukaku > Lambert but my team has been rocked by Kompany's injury.

I think Lambert is still the best long-term option despite the Dzeko love-in.

Osvaldo signing most likely means they will switch to 2 out and out strikers, or Lambert will play deeper. It is a good punt but I think it would be more wise to see how Osvaldo is transitioned into the side and the effect it will have on Lambert's returns.

How many of you chaps are saving the FT?

I think I'll do just that. Got 3 who didn't play (Zaha, Ravel, 4.0 def) and 3 Chelsea players (Haz, JT & Lukaku) so plenty of reason to make a move somewhere. If forced, I'd look to get some defensive cover for Southampton and move Lukaku on for Bony or VanW (pending the AV performance/gametime).

But, I'm leaning towards the 'wait and see'. I want to see how Newcastle do against a normal team (i.e, not the football version of Harlem Globetrotters), see if Ravel gets some gametime, and just generally get a better feel for things.

I'm on 66 points with the 3 Chelsea boys to turn out, in the context of my leagues it's a very handy score. Anyone in a similar position, if so what are you thinking? Am I a wise old man, or risking potential ruin?

Lallana for the best returns, Wanyama for budget. Ramirez still doesn't seem to be able to nail down a regular starting role and Schneiderlin is 5.5m which is more than Wanyama but I think Lallana is your best bet.

Really struggling to pick between Aguero and Soldado.. If I'm still doing terribly after GW3 I'll be wildcarding anyway..

Aguero has Car HUL whereas Soldado has Swa, ARS.. Fixtures favour Aguero but Aguero is 1.5 more expensive and is likely to get less minutes over the next 2 games.. I also already have Dzeko.

    Still leaning towards Aguero though..!?
