The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      I think at least one or two other strikers will deliver RVP's numbers or be pretty close to it. hard to tell who but I reckon at least one or two of aguero/negredo/soldado/sturridge/benteke/suarez will do that

      and rooney or welbeck (if either nails down a spot centrally) could be great differentials as well

      Aguero's next two fixtures are SO MUCH better but I'd still feel safer with RVP for them, both are just unrealistic at this stage. RVP is prohibiitively expensive. 🙁

      I doubt he will be a great fantasy player. He isn't a goal scorer and that was when he was playing in weaker leagues.

      He is awesome in real footballing sense but I dont see him as some one who will get too many FPL points, and definitely not more than Walcott.

          General rule of thumb: pick your team so that your players are never against each other. This raises your theoretical point ceiling.

          Therefore, start Chester. Benteke will score, anyway.

      Hazard didn't do enough in the DGW to convince me to play him against United. With a blank after that, I feel Nolan will perform much better in the two GWs.

      I will be transferring a Chelsea midfielder back in around GW 4-5, once I figure out which ones are sure starters.

        Hazard is getting better. I m almost sure he'll be returning attacking points against United.

          Maybe, but JM seems to love Lampard and he seems fit. I don't doubt that over the course of the season Hazard will comfortably outscore him, but for now, I like the flexibility Lampard gives me. It was Mirallas/Lampard or Hazard/Lallana/Sissoko/Taarabt. I really like Mirallas so I feel okay.

    2 week punt replacing Lukaku before I go to Tekkers:
    a) Dzeko
    b) Wolf
    c) Cisse

    I have Studge and Soldado as other strikers and already have SIlva as City cover. Given uncertainty over Dzeko and form of Newcastle I am actually leaning towards the wolf.

    still not sure whether to take Lukaku out ahead of Man U clash..
    I know Lukaku is down now to 7.9..

    Was thinking about Dzeko.. Many seems to think that Pellegrini might rotate him.. But somehow I feel that he may start this game week too..

    So anyone still feel that Lukaku to Dzeko swap would make sense?
    thoughts and opinions please.

          What I mean is, if you don't want Lukaku, you won't want Dzeko either, because he's the same deal.

            Yes I understand what you meant.

            Somehow still confused.

            I mean if Lukaku is starting then I can sense him giving his 100% for the man u game in order to impress the manager.

      I would do it. As you said, there is the risk of rotation but there are also points in favour.
      Pellegrini's praise, in-form pre-season, great fixtures, match stats sustaining his potential if given minutes.
      For 7.5 and for the next two GWs seems like a good bet.

        Yes, that is what i think too..

        But Lukaku against Man U, will he start?
        I mean neither Torres or Ba was that impressive in their games. So is there a chance that Lukaku might get a nod ahead of those 2 against Man U?

    Forgot about Lukaku droping tonight... I feel bad.
    Going for -8 pts hit with:
    Lukaku-->Soldado
    Hazard-->Nolan
    Anelka-->Dzeko

    Save FT in GW3, giving this for the next 2 GWs:

    Boruc, (Mannone)
    Toure, M.Turner, Chester, (Ward, Brayford)
    Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas, Nolan, (Kim)
    RVP, Soldado, Dzeko

          If you plan on bring Ivan straight back in for Lescott after the international break it is a great idea, go for it.

          Just be aware you are banking on one of Kompany & Nasty for being available for GW3 as Lescott is 3rd choice CB. How long is Kompany supposedly out for?

          It was common knowledge that he would only start one game at best. Hazard or Benteke with guaranteed 180mins was surely a better captaincy option. Lukaku was only a punt by comparison. Captaining Lukaku was always risky.
