Scout Report – Aly Cissokho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers added to his defensive options earlier this week by acquiring Valencia’s Aly Cissokho on a season-long loan. The 25-year-old’s arrival ends the Reds’ summer-long search for a new left-back, with the Frenchman following Iago Aspas, Kolo Toure, Simon Mignolet and Luis Alberto to the club as Rodgers bolsters his first-team squad.

In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Cissokho spoke of his determination to nail down a regular role on Merseyside:

“I feel extremely proud to be here and I’m proud of all the hard work I’ve put in so far throughout my career. I’ve always dreamt of one day signing for a really legendary club. I’ve been lucky enough to play for a few top sides and so to now get the chance to play for a club like Liverpool, it’s just fantastic. I hope to feature in as many games as possible. I know it’s going to be quite tough and I need to get to work as soon as possible as pre-season is over and we are into the league programme.”

The History

A product of the Gueugnon youth system in his native country, Cissokho’s career kicked off back in 2007. Having appeared 22 times for the club, he was sold to Portuguese outfit Vitória Setúbal FC after Gueugnon finished bottom of Ligue 1 at the end of the 2007-08 campaign.

After a mere 13 appearances for his new club, Cissokho’s impressive displays saw him snapped up by FC Porto in January 2009. His time there was just as brief, though; the left-back was afforded 15 games, helping his side to a league and cup double, before AC Milan came calling in the summer of 2009. Having announced the deal on their website, the Italians then cancelled the deal after the defender infamously failed a medical – Cissokho returned to his native country instead after Lyon agreed to match Milan’s previous bid and pay €15m for his services.

Finally settled, Cissokho nailed down the left-back role for the Ligue 1 club and made 91 appearances over the course of three seasons but, despite his marauding runs down the flank, produced only one goal and four assists before he was purchased by Valencia last summer. Cissokho failed to establish himself as an automatic pick for the La Liga side – he started just 18 league games (with a further seven off th bench) and registered two goals and a pair of assists. On the international stage, he has not been able to find a way past Patrice Evra and Gael Clichy in the pecking order and has subsequently turned out just once for his country, in a friendly against Norway in 2010.

The Prospects

Although it’s yet to be established whether Cissokho has been acquired as a first-choice prospect or merely gives Rodgers an experienced back-up option to Jose Enrique, the mere fact that any question marks now hang over the left-back berth will surely be enough to deter any would-be suitors from either player at the moment.

Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Enrique is certainly a little too pricey to invest in with a degree of doubt against his game time. With the similarly-priced Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger nailed-on at right-back and centre-half respectively, and new boys Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure easier on the budget, the Spaniard’s appeal has been significantly dented due to Cissokho’s arrival.

Given that Toure is as low as 5.0, though, many will be targeting the Ivorian if Rodgers fails to add to his central defensive options by the time the summer transfer window closes, though Cissokho (6.2 in Sky Sports) could find himself on Fantasy radars if he is listed at a similar cost to Toure in FPL. It may well be that Rodgers keeps faith in Enrique to begin with, though the Spaniard’s propensity for picking up niggling injuries could afford Cissokho a window of opportunity – from a Liverpool point of view, it also means Johnson wouldn’t have to shift over to the left to cover; a situation that unfolded last term.

With a trip to Villa and Swansea in addition to a home clash against United in the next three, immediate investment in the Reds’ backline won’t be a priority for many but from Gameweek 5 onwards, there looks plenty opportunity to rack up defensive returns. With six enticing home fixtures (SOT, CPL, WBA, FUL, NOR, WHM) allied with visits to the likes of Sunderland, Newcastle and Hull in the subsequent 11 Gameweeks, Rodgers’ side will be confident of mirrororing the resilience that racked up 16 clean sheets last time out.

For Cissokho, it’s a case of “wait and see” – Fantasy managers will initially turn to more secure options but if he’s kindly priced and turns out to be Enrique’s replacement, the Frenchman could be one to consider.

    Boruc - Westwood

    Toure - Shaw - Whittaker - Gabbidon - Chester

    Walcott - Silva - Ben Arfa - J.Cole - Barkley

Van Persie - Aguero - Sturridge

.... bit heavy on the forwards?

Whittaker isn't nailed on, gabbidon is terrible. How often do you want to play Chester?

So yes maye downgrade aguero to soldado and use 0.5 on 2 of those to upgrade.

Forward line is fantastic, but since we now know that its the centre backs making use of the new bonus point system, is it wise to play such a budget defence, don't get me wrong shaw and whittaker are good, but they're just bandwagons - i'd keep shaw and toure consider downgrading Aguero to Dzeko maybe and upgrading whittaker and potentially J.Cole or Ben Arfa

For a bit of fun I'm going to guess how many points each of my players will get for GW2 (ignoring bonus).

Boruc - 7pts. A clean sheet and 1pt for saves.

Zabaleta - 9pts. A clean sheet and an assist.
Toure - 1pt. No clean sheet, two goals conceded.
Chester - 2pts. No cleanie and one goal conceded.

Walcott - 10pts. A goal and an assist but no cleanie.
    Oscar - 2pts.
Silva - 8pts. A goal and clean sheet.
    Mirallas - 8pts. A goal and a clean sheet.

    Benteke - 6pts. One goal.
    Soldado - 6pts. One goal.
Lambert - 9pts. One goal and an assist.

Totting up gives me 68 points (ignoring captaincy and bonus points).

What do you guys think? Just a bit of fun.

Some advice if you dont mind should i take a hit -4/-8 this week or just do one transfer and take the hit next week
    Hart, (Gazzaniga)
    Luiz, Cole, Kompany, (Ward, Chester)
Morrison, Hazard, Santi Cazorla, Walcott, (Jedinak)
    Sturridge, Aspas, Anelka

i can take out either Anelka or kompany for 1 transfer (most likely Anelka)and take a hit next week or Anelka, kompany and luiz for a -8 this week and aim for a better(points wise) team week 3.
    any comments or suggestions please

why the double chelsea DEF / arsenal MID / liverpool FWD?? definite overkill

    Hi All,

GW2 team as it stands, 0 transfers used:

    Hart
    Coleman MTurner Toure
    Hazard Mirallas Coutihno Walcott
    Soldado Benteke Lambert

Basically I've been mulling over whether I should use my transfer to take out Hazard, as I will be taking him out next week for the blank anyway.

So what do you guys think I should do?

    A) Keep transfer
    B) Hazard -> Michu
    C) Hazard -> Ben Arfa
    D) Hazard -> Silva

    Thanks!

    Non RVP owners!!

I think we'd all agree it's probably not worth major surgery to bring RVP in for his next 2 matches (CHE followed by liv), but my question is, is he a must have for GW4? I initially thought so, but on reflection his fixtures around that time make me think that CRY in GW4 could be the perfect time for Moyes (nearly wrote Fergie) to give him a rest. In addition, there are some great other captaincy options for GW4, such as Benteke (NEW) & Soldado (NOR)....

    1 Sep - liv
    6 Sep - Holland game
    10 Sep - Holland game
    14 Sep - CRY
17 Sep - Champions League Match
    22 Sep - mcy

Especially now Anelka's gone I think having two of the less expensive strikers such as Benteke and Soldado (just an example) will rack up as many or more points than RVP & a cheap, average striker. It certainly will be close and the Benteke/Soldado/Sturridge...etc lot will give you a more balanced side

Although RVP is fixture-proof, captaincy material, I think it's worth the risk of leaving him out this year

One Caveat, the CRY game (which lets face it every person would love to own him if he was playing) could still see him get game time. If things aren't going United's way he could easily get half an hour which would be enough for him to grab one or two. Overall though I agree.

My decision this week is Aguero or Dzeko - which do you think is best here?

      I honestly think we will be seeing Kagawa by then and RvP rested. Initally I was planning on getting RvP for GW4 but might now go with a front 7 for GW4 of;

      Wally/Miralles/Oscar/Kagawa
      Aguero/Soldado/Benteke

Of course I will completely change my mind again by then but hey what's the point in playing if we don't tinker 😉

i'm sure the non benteke owners have taken a bit of a pasting over the last few days so i'd like to stick up for them a bit.

both chelsea and arsenal reduced benteke to 1 shot in each match, that will be extremely rare this season. of course benteke only needed that 1 shot v chelsea and agbonlahor won him 3 more shots from the penalty spot v arsenal (2 pens and the rebound). overall though there was very much a sense of tough fixtures playing out so, even after the arsenal implosion.
talking of the rebound what are the odds that a penalty along the ground that is saved then loops up perfectly for a fairly easy header on the rebound? lampard and walters with the same low right-footed penalty to the left didn't get the reprieve (lampard's better struck, walters' however was equally mis-hit). then the penalty he scored, some refs wouldn't have given it.

fine lines as always, i don't think the non-owners should be lambasted too much, there was some logic in avoiding just as there was logic to jump straight on. a goal was always very possible, 2 goals not unthinkable but i doubt anyone would have expected an 18 pointer. 14 more points than dzeko with 3 less chances, or 6 less in open play.

for the future i saw a genuine assist threat for benteke on wednesday which i think will bode well for the season, it's the only thing he really lacked last season

p.s benteke deeney golden boot double 625/1. not unthinkable at all

I'm not letting myself off the hook that easy. He was guaranteed 180 minutes. The probabilities favor two really hard fixtures over one easy one, especially for a dude like Benteke. Of course, if Sturridge goes ape tomorrow then all's well that ends well for me.

I agree, a lot of this stuff tends to happen (i.e. Ivanovic shouldn't have been on the pitch for his goal).

My smugness was more based on dealing with those claiming Benteke was either a) worse than Lukaku or b) he was going to be a second season syndrome victim.

Right now it's on Tekkers. My reasoning is that some teams (Spurs for example) may have decent fixtures but need more time to settle. Villa are looking like they know how to play with one another. Silva is VC because City look comfortable enough with each other too. The rest I think need a bit more time.
