The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's about whether it's an attempted cross or shot in the first place.

Needs a save or rebound from woodwork for an assist. Neither happened for Dzeko so people were clutching at the "deflected assist" straw. They were also confused as the rule changed this year.

Usually along the lines, "I have player so he should be given the assist now" vs "I don't have player and don't want others to get any points for the assist." Can't see why anyone responds to those posts. It only encourages them.

Agreed. Just watched the Arsenal highlights, and I've no qualms at all about Walcott, despite his poor returns from the first two.

Lots of good positions, shots on goal and key passes.

I think you're expectations are a little too unrealistic.

You can feasibly hope Man United don't get in on the action through Robin Van Persie, but I'd be quite surprised if they didn't score at all.

didn't hear of anything out of that game, but makes me think of something that could be a cool feature.

Table of all subbed OFF for each game in the gameweek.
Little reference of whether TACTICAL, INJURY, or REST (i.e. job done, game won)
% of games/gameweeks this year subbed off.

could be good little reference point for non 90min players as well.

    To much in defense!

That phrase is no longer counted. Right now it is much more justified to own good defense than before because of baps.

I think midfield is overrated because of the game's history. "After" two gameweeks midfield brings up the rear if we talk about tally.

Clean sheets seem to be getting the BP recognition that they probably deserve - much more so than the scorer of the goal in the 1-0 win. But the goalscorers are still the prime candidates when both teams score - and this will be the same even if they're midfielders - it's just the MFs aren't scoring at the moment.

Not sure about Marshall yet, does he fill in the gaps when you won't want to play Migs as you will want to play him most weeks except against the top 4 clubs. Zabaleta and Shaw (if not inj) look good but I would want Coleman instead of Collins or Turner. HBA jury's still out despite nice fixtures, Zaha wait and see and Lucas not worth it, get in another 4.5 mid and save your Liverpool slot. Front 3 look nice and heavy.

Good morning all. Anyone having doubts about getting RVP? I could downgrade Ivan and upgrade Soldado but them 2 players are both giving me great returns. The defence this season seems solid and Ivanovic should give a good return along with Soldado?

I may wait to see whether Kagawa emerges as a first team player on monday and take a punt on him for utd cover.

Doubt and RVP do not go in the same sentence.

A bit when you try to hold to opposite pole magnets together.

1FT, 0.5m in bank.... Is getting rid of Ivanovic or Hazard the priority?

    Mignolet - Lewis

    Ivanovic - Collins - Turner - Ward - Chester

    Hazard - Coutinho - Walcott - Mirallas - Kim

    Soldado - Benteke - Lambert

Neither are ESSENTIAL to get rid of. You could save your free transfer if you wanted because you can still put a solid team out. In relation to your question, you need to decide if you want either long term. If you don't want either of them, I would go with Hazard > Silva/Yaya/Navas to get city cover for Hull.

Despite having a few concerns with my team so far I'm determined not to wildcard.
    - Coutinho / Miralles not performing
    - Foster (inj)
    - Benteke / Lampard (blanks)

So can anyone help identify which transfer I need to make to help deal with the above?
Was initially looking at replacing Lampard and benching Tekkers but its hard to find someone with only 8.4m in the kitty!

That's definately an option but I have a weak ass bench - Chester, Ward & Williams (CRY).
Palace have a home game so they would be most likely to be drafter in to cover and just have to hope the no performers like Cout and Miral step up to the plate.

Gonna be playing Boruc every week from now till January. Love all his fixtures apart from
GW 5, 8, 12, 13... (pool, manu, ars, che... all away). Worth spending 0.5 more for Speroni(SWA, FUL, hull, nor)/ Mcgregor(new, eve, CPL, POOL) or might as well save the 0.5 and get Davis?

I've backed myself into a corner, financially, and wondering if there is a viable 4m keeper to rotate with Boruc? Currently have Lewis, but he isn't playing.

...or should I take the nuclear option of selling RVP and building a better defence/keeper?

    Team is:

    Boruc (Lewis)
    Shaw / Hangeland / Coleman (Briggs/Whittaker)
Wally / Silva / Nolan / Barkely (Kasami)
    Soldadododaa / RVP / Aguerooooo

New Baps is strange - see Everton match. So, in theory, if several players, regardless of number, all end up with same (highest) BPS total they must all get 3 baps each?

How essential is RVP in GW4?

Obviously concerned he could go berserk against Palace, but already have Giroud and Soldado who have (sun) and (NOR) respectively, and quite fancy Benteke to terrorise the mags' defence that week. Not getting him would also allow me to sort out my midfield - looking to shift Ben Afri, Snodgrass and Mirallas over the coming weeks, so don't really want to lose Haz or Silva to raise funds for RVP.
