The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

RVP isn't essential of course but when you weigh it up like this I think he's worth it...

    Oscar + Benteke vs Ward-Prowse + RVP.

Oscar will probably do well, and maybe tomorrow will shed more light on how much he'll be rotated, and Benteke is knocking them in. But I think RVP and Ward-Prowse will outscore them, and helps with captain choices.

The looking at two player combinations is a little deceptive. There was an anti-RVP argument the other day, saying Soldado+Sturridge would be better than RVP+Weimann. The point is, there are 14 different slots to try to find the money for RVP or to splash the cash from going without. I prefer to look at the striking options and I feel that Soldado/Sturridge/Giroud/Benteke can produce more than 75% of RVP's production at about 60% of the price.

RVP has a permanent captain is a safe option, but it's not like he consistently scores more than other players each week, it's just that he's very consistent and scores most weeks. The cheaper options have the ability to outscore him in any given week, so if you pick the right one as captain, you'll be better off, although the degree of difficulty is much higher.

Fair point BG. On reflection it will probably have a bigger effect on other players, assuming that many will play the WC to add RVP rather than take the hits required to bring him in, it could see a mass dumping/uptake in other players.

Am reconsidering the wildcard on international break. Prices simply are not moving enough to make it worth it for the team value alone.

Figured out i can get RVP iin at minimul cost anyway

This week Hazard to a 5m mid Ivanovich to a 4.5 defender = -4 points
Next week Dzeko to RVP for free

That would give me front line for week 4 if

    Van Persie home to palace
    Benteke home to Newcastle
    Soldado home to Norwich

    Mids
    Walcott
    Courtinho
    Maralas

Week 5 kick out Court if still done nothing

Seems an alternative to using the wildcard

my only worry is that the cap for fallers has not changed

Im worried for a few players

        Courtinho
        Marallas
        Williams

If they do nothing this week they could fall by .3 each over the international break.
Guess i could always do a -4 over the break to lose court , has to be better value than wildcarding
Been lucky with my team so far , think i can avoid using the card

One of the highlights of the season so far is that there aren't any guarantees with teams as to who's going to consistently perform. The usual (top 6) will likely finish there again but it's refreshing that some of the smaller clubs are going to rattle the cage from time to time. If the top 6 get knocked off every now and again we could be in for an exciting year!

Ultimate message ... no such thing as a template team anymore ... which is great for this game!

that's pretty much Silva vs. Coleman straight up

maybe Coutinho edges Chester by a point or two, but unless Coutinho bags a goal, the new BAPS system is more likely to be kind to Chester than him

Interesting responses. I can either do Ivan>>Coleman or Coutinho>Silva.

The other consideration is price, already seen Coleman go up 0.3 if I don't get him this week, his price may get out of reach.

          that's different

think Ivan is better to keep for the season the way BAPS are going

and Coutinho looks useless the way BAPS are going -> early analysis suggest he's only getting BAPS if he scores, not for assisting

Coutinho -> Silva seems better for the long haul and minimizing more transfers down the line

    Next question

Who is going to be the 5m mid that replaces Hazard?

    Lets do some name gathering

    Cardiff

Whittingham looked good , takes the set pieces and that likely to be where they get their goals
    Gunnarsen also looked useful
    Kim another option

    Southampton

    Ward-Prowse

    Hull

    Brady
    Koren
    Huddlestone

    Fulham

    Kasami

    Villa

    Delph
    El ahmady

    Everton

    Barklay

    Anymore

if Fellaini goes away in the transfer window, Barkley

but seems more likely that Brady is the current winner for being nailed on, involved in set pieces and on penalty kicks

Morning dzzz all the way from south africa:)

those 10 mins from yesterday changed the structure of my ML, only 10 points behind now 😀

With regards to a monthly ML
    1) will the next gw be included for august as it starts on the 31st
    2) i was told that taking a hit in the first gw for a month doesnt get included in the monthly score but only overall...true? I
    3) If the above is true, would you recommend taking a hit in the next gw given that i am 10 points behind

    foster (boruc)
    ward murner coleman (chester ivan)
    miralas kim coutinho wally (hazard)
    soldado dzeko lambert

considering either ivan >> 4.5 or hazard >> 6m so i can do dzeko >> rvp in gw4
