The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Really don't get this Barfa love. So far he's been shit. And so have Newcastle going forwards. Does zero goals and only one shot on target in two games not spell it out loudly enough?

Should be, if you watched the game you must have liked his game. Was all over the place, lively, creating chances and on some set-pieces too. If I liked him, the coach should too, and the answer should be yes

Currently starting ahead of the underwhelming Ramirez.

It was notable that on Saturday when Soton changed the system to accommodate Osvaldo he moved back into central midfield. But then Schneiderlin was injured in training last week and went off at HT when Osvaldo was introduced.

If Soton play J-Rod, Lambert and Osvaldo I think JW-P will head to the bench once Schneiderlin is fit

Anyone done any analysis of budget midfielders on members area?

I did some quick research last night between...

Brady, Kim, Witts, Ramsey plus another I can't recall and despite Whittingham player a little deeper than in previous years he's still managed to fire off 7 shots. More than any other.

(I've not yet looked at Kasami, or Barkley as I don't want 2 Evertons mf)

This coupled with his set play duties is tempting me to get him over any other, Brady was my original pick, but if you take his goal (pen) out of the equation then things are different.

    Anyone done any work?

I feel like I almost have to take a hit and trade Hazard for Silva today. The former is likely to fall a couple of points pre GW4 while the latter will probably rise to 9.4ish..?
Dont see any other good options in mf for gw3 except Silva. I already have Walcott, Couthino, Nolan and Wanyama.
Is it worth it to take a hit now to protect team value?

Price rises are slower this year because it takes more transfers for a rise. Don't panic about the rises, probably won't rise three times in a week.

Hazard might fall a fair amount thanks to basically everyone selling him though.

we will sign one marquee LW - DiMAria or Lamela.

Pod/Sanogo will be used as backup for Giroud. benteke/dzeko could be a shock last day signing

will sign a GK (hopefully begovic)

will sign a defender either richards or sakho

flamini will be signed to cover arteta/rambo and diaby is "like a new signing", although we are also looking to activate kongdogbia clause also

      first team of
      Begovic
      Sagna Kos Sakho Gibbs
      Rambo Kong
      Walcott Cazorla Di Maria
      Giroud

      second team
      Woj
      Jenk Mert TV5 Monreal
      Arteta Flamini/Diaby
      Ox Jack/Rosicky Gnabry/Ryo
      Pod/Sanago

      and we are sorted.

Yeah that sounds sufficiently unambitious to be possible. Could well sort us out for 4th place. Although even that kind of assertion is questionable now.

Still, if you were to look at a team that has done our kind of business in the window so far, would you conclude we are going to do all that?

    My team so far

    Mignolet, Boruc
Mertesacker, Collins, Reither, M. Turner, Brayford
    Coutinho, Walcott, Hazard, Mirallas, Morisson
    Soldado, Benteke, Dzeko

    0.4m in the bank

Can someone please help restructure my defense. Turner, Brayford, and Mertesacker have just not kick started the season with Mertesacker taking up 5.5m

The most frustrating thing is that I didn't even think of getting him until the morning of the GW1 deadline and when I saw him in the scout picks I thought he would be my Norwich defender of choice (I wanted a Norwich defender but wasn't sure who)

But Olsson was a punt. We knew the risk compared to Turner but we took the gamble and lost. Only got ourselves to blame. I have bigger transfers to make and it wouldn't surprise me to see him in the team in a few weeks so i am holding firm.

Hazard's my only Chelsea player at the moment... I want to pick up Silva so I'm considering swapping either Hazard or Coutinho for him (I've got Sturridge for Liverpool cover)
