Moving Target

Moving Target – Oussama Assaidi

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his options on the flank earlier this week by snapping up Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal. The 25-year-old becomes the third summer arrival since Hughes’ installation at the Britannia, following the acquisition of defenders Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa – in an interview with the Potters official website, the Moroccan revealed he was much in demand before opting to join up with the Staffordshire outfit:

“I had a number of options available to me but I really feel that this is the best one for me. I am excited about what the season holds for us. I spoke to the manager here, he told me his hopes for the season and how he sees me fitting into the team and he made it a very attractive move for me to be honest. He plays football the right way, the way that I want to play, and it was quite an easy decision for me to make in the end. I came to the game on Saturday and watched the match and I was impressed. I feel I can fit in here well and help the team to progress.”

The History

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career began in the Dutch second-tier with Omniworld back in 2006. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he registered three goals from 36 appearances before making his way to De Graafschap ahead of the 2008/09 season. Assaidi’s first year at the club produced just a couple of goals from 16 appearances but after netting five times in as many games at the start of the following campaign, he was purchased by Heerenveen prior to the closer of the summer transfer window.

The Moroccan took time to settle in his new surrounds, with just one goal and three assists from 20 league games but stepped up significantly the year after. Assaidi racked up nine goals and 13 assists from 31 top-flight matches and followed that up with 10 goals and seven assists over 27 games in 2011/12. Having played a single match for the Dutch club at the start of last season, he was snapped up by Liverpool for a fee of around £2.4m but failed to impress new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers – all four of his league appearances arrived courtesy of the subs bench.

The Prospects

After falling firmly behind the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for a role on Liverpool’s left, the move to the Britannia certainly looks in the Moroccan’s best interests. Granted, Stoke have no shortage of wide men to provide competition – Matthew Etherington has started both league games thus far, while Michael Kightly and fit-again Brek Shea are also in the mix.

Crucially, though, Assaidi’s speed on the flank may help edge him ahead in Hughes’ thinking as the new man in charge looks to inject a little more urgency to his side’s play out wide. Upon completion of the deal, the Potters boss explained:

“He’s an exciting player, who has great pace and is very direct and will certainly add another dimension to what we already have at the Club.”

Certainly, Etherington’s failure to produce a single goal or assist over the entirety of the previous campaign suggests he’s at risk from the new arrival, with Hughes desperate to add more directness to his attacking options as he attempts to introduce a slicker, more possession-based approach to the Potters’ play. Assaidi’s stats across his last couple of full seasons in Holland certainly highlight his capabilities and, if given a run of regular games, may be one to consider. Already handed a 45-minute debut in last night’s Capital One Cup win over Walsall, his performance was hailed by Hughes, who has already tipped him to be a crowd favourite.

Coming in at just 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.2 in the Sky Sports game, Assaidi could potentially hand Fantasy managers a real budget option for their five-man midfields over the season ahead. At present, though, with more secure options such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham or Hull’s Robbie Brady in the same price bracket, we’ll be happy to keep our distance until Hughes’ intentions for the new boy become apparent. An upcoming run of matches which see the Potters play West Ham and Arsenal away and welcome City to the Britannia will certainly deter any initial suitors, affording us time to assess Assaidi’s impact before contemplating any possible transfer in.

another worry is they are linked with buying a CB (possibly Sakho) which could see Toure having to regain his place when he returns to fitness.

Just a comment on Team Value when on your wildcard...

The GW4 wildcard is a popular talking point right now for many and a key strategical decision for a lot of managers. Not for me though, I popped it this week due to overloading on DGW players (4) and then suffering the losses of Foster, Toure, Kompany and Anelka. 😳

It has rightly been pointed out that it is actually more difficult to make money when on wildcard than widely perceived. Increasing team value on WC is easy, increasing your actual budget not so much. You can increase your team value easily by 1m in a week but the majority of that will be made up of 0.1m rises. Team Values therefore end up seeming inflated because a team will have lots of 0.1m rises that hold no equity in terms of sales.

For example, my TV is up 1.3m but there are only two players I can actually sell for a measly 0.1m profit i.e. Silva (unlikely to sell) and Barkley (will possibly sell). If players are achieving 0.2m or 0.3m rises in any given gameweek, the likelihood is that these players have just scored very well and you're likely to keep them anyway. You actually need bad bandwagons that you will sell to capitalise on if you really want to "make money" and not just increase your Team Value on WC. Even then, while you are trying to capitalise on that bad bandwagon that will rise 0.2m or 0.3m, the future solid replacement you have mind could very possibly be limping to their own 0.1m rise negating your original ploy.

However I am NOT saying you shouldn't use the WC prior to GW4, I'm just saying don't do it for the "making money" reason. What has not been mentioned quite as much as the "money made" element of the wildcard, is the "money saved". We all know wildcards are used to fix a team in a desperate situation or to capitalise on DGWs, but some of the lesser known value of a WC is to save you money on players about to rise and to buy you time before deciding on your final team. One of the key advantages of your wildcard is therefore that you can (essentially) halt the price rises.

I haven't made a cent from my wildcard this week but I have saved 0.7m on players I may well have bought later and players who I may well keep when the deadline arrives such as Zabaleta, Coleman, Silva, Nolan, Sturridge, Aguero. Next time you are on wildcard you should not put as much emphasis on "money made" and perhaps think instead of "money saved".

brill...as i commented earlier...11 players rising by 0.1 (101.1) is not as usefull as three player rising by 0.3 (100.9) or better still two players rising by 0.5 (101.0)...and even then it has to be realised TV value and not just player value.

Great read, some excellent points in there. I like the distinction between money made and money saved, it's an important one and easily overlooked. I'm still not sure how important team value is over the course of the season, there's probably too much emphasis put on it but the importance of getting in certain key players before they ever even rise is undeniable.

      Good luck with the wildcard!

Thanks Reedy. Yep, there is a distinction to be made IMO.

I think Team Value is reasonably important but there is no rush (or capability) to grow it right away. Also you can't become solely concerned with TV without ruining your team.

Like Fantasy Football in general, it's all about a healthy balance.

Great post, hope it gets stickied/hot topic-ed.

There are so many false economies and counterintuitive calculations with Team Value - the actual buying power is often far lower than you think. And as you say, if you have a player who has shot up in price and you're not going to ship him out anyway, his price rise counts for nothing.

Players do well, then their price rises. Successful teams have high value because the brought the players in when they did well and out when they didn't, not because they wanted to build team value.

Excellent post. I'd also add that a big benefit of an early wildcard is that you can dump players who are falling in price more quickly.

You only get half of any price rises, but you take the full hit for any price falls.

Team for this week, no w/c yet this season, 1FT 0.5 to use:

    Migs (Speroni)
    Zabs, Reid, Murner (Ivan, Brayford)
    Silva, Coutinho, Jarvis, Kim (Hazard)
    Dzeko, Giroud, Soldado

Figure the FT needs to be spent on either Hazard, Ivan or Brayford.

    A: Hazard -> Walcott
    B: Brayford -> Playing 4.0/4.5 defender
    C: Ivan -> Expensive defender
    D: Other

and that's what arsenal need. Someone to come in to that role when they have injuries (like now) and do the job. He is premiership proven and arsene and the fans can rely on him.

He has also won titles during his career which is something we are lacking, he's also a bit of a c*** and we need that to. Would much rather have him on 50k a week and save the 15 million we would have paid for gustavo (as well as the 120k a week Wolfsburg have reportedly offered him)

premiership proven 5 years ago, he's basically spent that time injured, and now he's almost 30. A strange one when they have just been getting rid of most of their half-bit nothing squad players

I would be worried about not fielding 11. Seeing as you still have 4 Che/AV players I assume you still have your FT. I would do Haz>Theo gives you a player who should score well all season and gives you a better chance at fielding 11 this week.

Kasami is a rotation risk with ruiz back from injury

Barkley may become a rotation risk with Gibson coming back

Hull might not get as creamed as we think by City, 1 CS at home to Norwich and only conceding 2 away to Chelsea is an indicator of a half defense defense (granted i haven't actually seen them play).
Didn't they have the best defense in the championship, or am I confusing them with another promoted team?

Arsenal fans - What's the fascination with spending money? Flamini is a free transfer and is a signing yet you still complain?

Would you rather arsene went out and spent £10m on flamini just to keep you happy

Yes tickets are expensive, yes you haven't won anything in 8 years but this is the first season in god knows how long arsenal haven't sold a key player and have added to the squad with flamini (and possible others)

Spend some money and pay over the top just for the sake of it. Utter nonsence and clear example of being brainwashed by the media

it's not about spending money, it's about buying top quality players to replace those that have left over the years. Probably they wouldn't be so annoyed if the board hadn't come out at the beginning of the summer boasting about how much money they have to spend.

*cut off. I like the bit of steel he brings but looking at the depth of the other teams in four competitions this season it is still an overwhelming task for the somewhat brittle group he has. Going for silverware is a war of attrition for a squad of 20+ as much as it's a testament to the most cohesive 11 or 15.

IF, if Bale doesn't join Real, and stayed at TOT, what will happen?

I mean they have basically spend £100m or so, before they well Bale.

So will they have a financial crisis?

The deal's already agreed. They wouldn't have spent so much already without an agreement in place.

They still have an asset 'worth' (assuming that's what Real are prepared to pay) £80m on the balance sheet.

Nah..Pool haven't conceded yet and the NLD/Citeh v Hull is too tempting.

But always a great safe (c) choice to have 🙂

Worth doing Toure>Walker for a hit? Or any other defender up to 6.5m for that matter.

Don't fancy WCing soon and next weeks FT will be used to bring RvP in, so won't be able to get rid for free for at least 2 weeks by which time he will have lost value. Figure I may as well get rid now because if Shaw doesn't start this week I'll have Chester playing away to City.
