Spot the Differential – Gameweek 3

As the minutes tick away towards the Gameweek 3 deadline, our weekly assessment of some overlooked Fantasy alternatives is rolled out again. We’ve a trio of wide men with favourable fixtures for your perusal this morning, with a Tyne-Wear duo and north London option all worthy of our attentions.

Hatem Ben Arfa

It’s hardly been the best of starts for Newcastle. A couple of games into the season and the Tyneside team have yet to register a league goal, continuing a run that has now seen them find the net twice in their last eight league matches.

If there’s one person capable of putting a smile back on Alan Pardew’s face, though, it’s Hatem Ben Arfa. The mercurial Frenchman climbed off the bench in the midweek Capital One Cup clash against Morecambe and immediately made the difference, setting up assists for both the Magpies’ late strikes.

With a home clash against Fulham this weekend followed by showdown against Villa and Hull, Ben Arfa may well finally deliver on the potential that has seen him register eight attempts on goal thus far. At 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (5.9 in Sky Sports and 3.5 in Sun Dream Team) and with a 4% ownership, the fleet-of-foot-Frenchman looks a decent short-term punt heading into the deadline.

Adam Johnson

The Sunderland winger is another whose statistics suggest he’s been a little unlucky not to pick up the points. So far, only five midfielders have created more goalscoring opportunities for team-mates that Johnson, while his eye for goal has produced five attempts without any degree of success.

Nevertheless, his displays hint he could be set for an upturn in Fantasy output as the former City wide man attempts to return to the form that harvested five goals and nine assists for the Black Cats last time around. A trip to Selhurst Park, where he faces a Palace side without a point to their name, affords Johnson the perfect platform to finally get his campaign up and running.

At 7.0 in FPL (7.4 in Sky Sports and 3.5 in Sun Dream Team) and 3% ownership, he could appeal to those on the lookout for a one-week punt ahead of the international break – with Arsenal, Liverpool and United in three of the following four, however, the upcoming schedule is far from encouraging.

Andros Townsend

The typically high-scoring north London derby brings the Tottenham wide man onto our radar this time around. Having dazzled in last week’s Europa League win over Dinamo Tbilisi, Townsend retained his starting berth against Swansea last Sunday and provided the assist for Roberto Soldado’s converted spot-kick.

With Aaron Lennon still likely to miss out due to a foot problem, Townsend looks set to be unleashed against Kieran Gibbs on the flank in Sunday’s showdown against Arsenal – given that the previous five Emirates encounters have harvested 30 goals, a goalless game looks highly unlikely.

A price of just 5.5 in FPL (4.6 in Sky Sports and 2.5 in Sun Dream Team) and ownership of under 1% makes Townsend a real under the radar option before Erik Lamela and the incoming Christian Eriksen stake a claim for starting roles in the attacking midfield positions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Morning all.

Couple of selection queries at the back:

Mignolet or Boruc and Shaw or MTurner?

Currently on Mignolet and Shaw but could back the 0-0 at Carrow Road.

    What do you think?

Greeting and Salutations fellow Internet Users

Going through a bit of 'team envy' and at the moment.

Thought about swapping Snoddy or Gibbs as I have lowered my expectations for both Arsenal and Norwich for this week and beyond. Any ideas to improve? 0.2 in the bank.

    Boruc (Mannone)
Ward / Gibbs / Toure (Chester / Ivanovic)

Kim / Snoddy / Silva / Walcott (Oscar)

Anelka / Robin Van Traitor / Dzeko

    Cheers

I need a bit of help here lads. I have a pretty awful squad, but don't want to wildcard. Already used my FT this week but probably won't get out an 11 unless I take a hit. But how?

    £1.0m in the bank.

    Boruc (Foster)
    Coleman Toure Collins (Baker Chester)
    Mirallas Coutinho Walcott Silva (Morrison)
    RVP Anelka Lambert

Pretty much the same team as me

      You'll be fine.

The only move you'd want to make for a hit would've been Toure -> Collins, and you have Collins and it's marginal whether it's worth it.

Stay with your team. Even if Chester gets 0 points, it's better than a net -2.

Just pictured the city hull game in my head.. Man city dominatin possession and sitting in hull's half. Silva patrolling just outside the hull box trying to unlock the defense with innumerable key passes.. Then i picture the arsenal tottenham game. Tottenham with a new team and a new defensive resolve. Just cause history says it will be a high scoring game does not mean it will be. pretty cagey imo.. Silva captain for me

Both sides in arsenal tott game played midweek, that statistically has always prompted a weaker defensive response in the weekend game. Both play attacking stiles, both have bad defenders and defenses as a whole. At the same time both sides wont want to lose so that may affect them to play more defensive.

Late games are often more dramatic I hope that will be the case

That was my thinking right up to the point that I realised this Spurs team is going to play 4-3-3 with probably Sandro, Dembele AND Paulinho. At this stage a draw works for them and I think this NLD is going to massively go against the recent high scoring trend.

Too much at stake for both this early in the season = no one wants to lose.

Hopefully he will but I wouldn't be surprised to see Aguero and Negredo start..

      "No risk no reward"

And you can take minimal risk and have decent upside btw 😉

    Toure, Murner, Ward
    Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, Mirallas
    RVP, Dzeko, Anelka

Looks good to me, although long-term not sure I'm sold on your Marshall/Lewis combo 😀

        Ha, thanks.

Yeah. I really don't know why I went with him over Boruc..

Got silva as captain currently. Really tempted with Dzeko though. You?

I got Giroud, Wally VC. Dzeko it too much of a risk, stick with Silva/Wally IMO.

Yeah I agree. If Dzeko starts though he should comfortably outscore him IMO. But yes, too risky unfortunately.

I didn't see it, but Swansea struggled. Looks like Bony is back which might help but it's still pretty risky.

I've done the same. I just think this is the first game they could shine, especially with Myhill in goal. It's a punt, but I expect the NLD to be tight, against the recent trend. So it seemed the best chance for something significant, points-wise. Fingers crossed!

    Good morning mates!

    Please rate my team:

    Boruc (Foster)
Zabaleta - Toure - Coleman (Chester, Ivanovic)
    Walcott - Snodgrass - Mirallas - Silva (R.Morrison)
    Sturridge - Soldado - Dzeko

    - I've already used my free transfer (Hazard -> Silva)
    - 0,9 in the bank
    - Last chanches for Snodgrass and Mirallas?
    - Thumbs up for Toure
    - Who should get the armband?
    - Any suggestions for improvement?

    Thank you!!

    -------------------Hart

    Zabaleta---Nastasic----Lescott-------Clichy

    --------------Fernandinho------Yaya----------

    Nasri-----------Silva----------------Aguero-----

    ----------------------Negredo

I agree, but they play 4-2-2-2 with Aguero and Negredo on top together IMO.

So I have three city (zab, dzeko, silva) and they have an early kick off... Captain:

A silva - his stats are better
B wally - to spread the risk, might be more explosive..
