Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

Sakho will be nailed on after some time, but atm, i don't think anyone can say with confidence that Toure will be straight out of the first team...

Agger, Mig and Johnson(if fit) the only three worth considering from their back line

I agree with the others. The problem is with creativity from the mf. If things happen then he is a very good option. But Lamela and Erikson could also vie for our attention given the up front options available elsewhere coupled with their price tags

Think the list of iffy players you're not selling is the biggie this week.

Currently for me, that includes Toure, Mirallas, Soldado.

I can't decide on Coutinho because he seems destined to go CAM sooner or later, but will I die of boredom in the meantime or will it even pay off?

Still, he was superb in GW1 creating a ridiculous number of good chances against Stoke. I know he's got a reputation as an inconsistent player but I think some of it is just Rodgers' tactics, in the Villa and United games he was happy to defend. They were probably meant to counterattack but didn't execute it very well, I think part of the problem is that when you're so deep you have few passing options. The puzzle really is Coutinho delivered the goods last season, what's changed.

  12. RVP Template Walk Through
    BigFatFrank
    • 14 Years
    10 years, 7 months ago

    Long boring post alert.

A walk through of what I see as an RVP Template

There has been a hell of a lot of good chat and analysis over these first three weeks and now into the international break on bonus points, new players and RVP to name a few hot topics.

I’m going to distil this to two basic points that have emerged and been reported here repeatedly (I do get the irony):

    1) Defenders (centre back in particular) are both performing well (clean sheets) and are picking up bonuses making them more valuable than in previous years.
    2) Creative playmakers (assists) are less profitable than goals

Based on these two principals along with the age old strategy of following the fixtures I going to build a template

So frisking the fixtures you can’t help but see of the big teams Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, Tottenham are favourable.
Other considerations are that City and Chelsea are far too prone to rotation and not worth the headache.

So with a little presumption I pick the only realistic options from each

Liverpool - Migs, Agger, Sakho, Toure, Enriquez, Sturridge
Arsenal – Schezney, Koscielny, Wally, Ouzil, Giroud,
Man U – Vidic, Fellaini, RVP
Tott – Lloris, Vert, Kaboul, Dawson, Paulhino, Soldado

From these I will pick the core of my team.

STRIKERS, perhaps the easiest decision - The best 3 strikers based on form, fixtures and pedigree are Giroud, Sturridge, RVP. Sorted.

DEFENDERS, based on point 1 above, I want two decent defenders, preferably centre backs. I’ll go for Vidic and Agger as these two seem the best bets for clean sheets and are nailed on. The other three spots will be filled with bargains…. Pick from, Shaw, Clyne, Turner, Collins Yanga-Mbiwa, Whittaker (or similar) depending on budget and personal taste / collective bandwaggon pressure / price rises.

GOALKEEPERS I think that it has emerged to popular reception that Migs is undervalued, performing well and has great fixtures, you cant look past him. So pair him with a solid playing cheap option (Boric) and Im sorted for 10.3 mil

After picking 3 top strikers at nearly £32m and 2 top deffenders at £26m, 10.3 for the GKs this leaves 31 mil for 5 midfield players. I think this is the trickiest part. So I’ll strait having a go.

Midfielders - Too risky to get in any of the new signings so my first pick is Wallcott who has great fixtures and should benefit from the arrival of Ozil. 22 left. I think I have to concede that I need 2 cheap options so pick from 4.5/5.0 offerings (Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Barkley, Brady). This leaves £12.5m left. Bearing in mind I am likely to want to play 4-3-3 I will swing towards another cheap option leaving £7.5m to spend. Not an easy bracket to buy from so pick from Nolan or Barfa.

DONE. 2 weeks off now. Wake me up when this boring window has ended.

    Any chinks in the logic?

    Sorry to bore, welcome discussion….

That's what the 'RVP team' I am looking at looks like.

The dilemma I have is more fundamental in that I'm not sure whether I want RVP at all. The team is so much more balanced without him.

I've no doubt RVP will score heavily again this season and will probably be top FPL points scorer. It's whether that is worth foregoing 4 good midfielders and 3 premium defenders.

      thanks for the work!

i think a lot of the wildcarders should consider a 9.0mil goalie combo, like Boruc + Myhill at 4.5 each.

this saves a bit of money to upgrade a mid.

having a non-premium keeper isnt such a big deal imo, the goalies rarely get the BPs anyway so it's not a huge loss

4-3-3 is being touted a lot as the formation of the season, and the reasoning is persuasive. Increased bonus returns for defenders and a higher rate of cleansheets so far, coupled with reduced returns so far for premium midfielders all support the argument.

But how long can this continue? Once a few of the new acquisitions start to gel in some of the top sides, and strategies form for breaking down the so far resilient defences of newcomers Cardiff and Hull, goals will surely return to the Premiership.

So what do we do? Set up to reap the rewards of today or plan for the coming revolution?

I think the answer lies in rotating between formations. Setting up with a cheap rotating pair / trio in defence as well as a rotating pair in midfield allows us to shift seamlessly from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3, should the fantasy wind suddenly change again. Flexibility is key!

As I mentioned on the last page, my take on it is that the big hitters will, as usual get 15-20 cleanies per season. The difference is that each one is now worth 5-7 points instead of 4. So we're looking at 7-9 points every other game for them. You won't get that kind of scoring from similarly priced mids/strikers.

So 4-3-3 only if you invest properly in it. Do it with cheapos and it'll fail as soon as the goals come back.

You could also make the case to play 3-4-3 with 4-3-3 as your first sub formation i.e. a 5m defender could be first sub rather than a 5m mid, with better returns from defenders in that price range than mids.

I'm looking at the latter, I think it's fair to say the tweaks have made a 5m defender better than a 5m midfielder. Excluding the appearance of a new Siggy

Yes, the balance of your budget will be important actually. If the goals come back with a vengeance, even the top defenders will suffer till later in the season, but they should of course have a better chance of cleansheets generally. I'm all for rotating a few cheap mids and spending a little more at the back; it's a shame Toure is probably gone as a budget big hitter. I'm worried about Nastasic too with City's new signing. There will be a way to make it happen though!

Defences are harder to break down this season, the new promoted teams are simply more resilient, and the attackers aren't showing as much desire. I really don't think anything will change, it'll carry on for a long while. Every team seems cautious, like they have too much to lose.

I actually hope you're right, it's quite refreshing. I always felt FPL needed to do something to bring defenders back into the game, and now there's a worry they've gone too far the other way! But I think things will settle down...goals are coming...they may actually have called it just right.

I'm definitely looking to go 4-3-3 in the short-term to see how things pan out. As of now, using a cheap midfield in light of the apparent general consensus that investing big up top and at the back seems wiser at the moment.

I have wildcarded, and for GW am currently using:

      Migs (Harper)
      Ferdinand, Enrique, Ivanovic, Chester (Coleman)
      Ozil, Lampard, Brady (Ward-Prowse, Pennant)
      Giroud, RVP, Benteke

      0.1 mil left

I may get Sakho to replace Enrique come GW5 if Rodgers prefers him. Ozil is temporary, may swap him for Wally before GW4. Biggest question is whether I should swap Benteke for Sturridge. What do you guys think? Feel free to tear this apart 🙂

With the exception of Man C away, Van Persie has superb fixtures coming up, so for me naturally gets the armband. In that case you need to view 'B' as Brady, Lampard, RVP & RVP and compare to A and add in the player you would make captain if you didn't own RVP.

For me during periods of favourable fixtures for RVP, it is the time to have RVP and the £14m becomes less of an issue because of the Captaincy factor.

I ignored the selection of RVP for the first three games because of both Chelsea's double gameweek and tough fixtures for Man U, making it unlikely that I would have captained him. He will be coming into my side for GW4 and remain so while the fixtures are extremely favourable.

During less favourable fixtures I may well sell him - so RVP is not a season keeper, is not essential, but is blooming close to essential for the next half a dozen games. The defeat at Liverpool should also deter any rotation thoughts that Moyes could have had for the Palace game and for me he starts and looks good for 2 goals / 1 goal + assist.

Also consider the free-kicks and corners and he can pick up points where other strikers don't.

Robin Van Persie is essential for the next 3 gameweeks. Owners will no doubt captain him and if he explodes then non-owners (like me) are doomed.

    Discuss.

I have him but I'm thinking of captaining Benteke this week. Still a lot of good alternatives out there tbh.

Both could do well, but at some stage you have to consider it is a Villa player v a Man U player. Benteke in the main needs to score a goal to get points and the support he gets on this site is bizarre at times. He isn't going to be scoring over 30 goals a season so I'd worry about giving him the armband. I've posted separately the benefit of RVP taking free-kicks/corners (Penalties too, but then so does Benteke - perhaps Man U get more though). In a poor performance from RVP he could still assist twice from set-pieces and this is a great attribute to fall back on, especially when selecting a captain. So he scores goals, can assist and has the set pieces while playing for a top team with good fixtures and you have the facililty to have the equivalent of two RVP's in your team. £14m still too much.

For the record I have Benteke, as a result if the initial double gameweek, and he's proved to be better than I thought, so I could be calling this wrong, but if you have both RVP (C) is the way forward. When I wildcard for GW6 Benteke will also be coming out from my team, to make way for Suarez.

Thanks for the detailed reply, there's a good chance I'll bottle it and give RvP the armband. But I have been very impressed with the way Villa, not just Benteke, have started this season - and the opposite is true of Newcastle. Still, they'll probably aim to keep things tight against Villa, and surely Utd will have too much for Palace. I'll probably see sense before the deadline... 🙂

I think the major plus point with Benteke is that he has a history of scoring goals, and more importantly points, in the so-called no-go fixtures (Liverpool (A), Arsenal (A) etc.).

Most strikers playing for a relegation threatened/mid-table team and/or at that price simply don't get the points and rarely score in those games.

This is down to a few things, mainly, the way managers set up to have 10 men behind the ball against the top teams away from home.

Benteke bucked this trend last year and did so again on the opening day. If I'm honest though, in terms of who will get the most goals I think it will be RVP (out of the two). His set piece potential also, like you said, makes him a sure fire captain for me.

Next 3? Maybe not Man City, that game will likely be a low scoring draw. It's the fixtures after City I like, West Brom, Sunderland, Southampton, Stoke, Fulham, then it's tricky fixtures after that, though Arsenal at home could be good also...or a disaster.., it goes Cardiff away, Tottenham away, Everton at home...

Re-evaluate the situation after the Fulham game, although those tricky fixtures aren't that difficult in that there could still be goals even if Man U don't secure the points.

People thinking about going for expensive defenders, are you also holding RVP? Because there's a cheap midfield, and then there's a CHEAP midfield.

      My plan is RVP, Sturr/Soldado/Tekkers/Giroud

Midfield of Walcott(or other similar price), 2 cheaps 5mil max, and than either 2 about 7-8 mids(Lamps, HBA, Eriksen)- or this could be 9 mil and 6 mil

      Defense of 2 6 mil guys, 1 4.5 and 2 4 mil guys
      2 4.5 keepers

Always play the 2 expensive keepers but rotate the cheap mids and cheap defenders with some 4 defender lineups.

    Hi,

    My team is:

    Mig/Davies
    Vidic/Coleman/Sakho/Chester/Gabbidon
    Wally/Silva/Ozil/Brady/Whittingham
    Soldado/Benteke/Sturridge

Basically I'm going to play 3-4-3 (I don't believe that this CS galore is gonna last for long) but with Brady/Whittingham as my rotating mids I can easily line up Chester or Gabbidon if they play nice fix at home and shift to 4-3-3.

In any case, I'm not sure if Ozil and Wally isn't a bit of overkill?

    What do you think?
