Scout Report – Marko Arnautovic

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his attacking options on deadline-day with the acquisition of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of five new faces at the club this summer along with Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Stephen Ireland.

Speaking to the Potters official website upon completion of the deal, Hughes admitted he’s been keeping an eye on the Austrian international for some time:

“Marko is a player we have been aware of for some time and I’m really pleased we have been able to add him to our squad. He has played at the highest level in Holland, Italy and Germany and is keen to make his mark in England with Stoke City.”

The History

A somewhat temperamental character, Arnautovic switched clubs five times during his youth career before finally settling with Dutch outfit FC Twente. After racking up the goals for the club’s youth team (22 goals in 24 games) and reserves (27 goals in 32 games) the Austrian made his senior debut towards the end of the 2006/07 season. The following year produced just a couple of assists from 14 league appearances before Arnautovic stepped up another level – 12 goals and six assists from 28 matches persuaded Italian outfit Inter to snap him up on a one-year loan deal.

Arnautovic’s time in Serie A was far from successful, though. A series of off-field indiscretions were not taken lightly by then-manager Jose Mourinho, who played him a mere three times in the league – the Portuguese boss reckons the player “is a fantastic person but has the attitude of a child”.

Picked up by Werder Bremen in the summer of 2010, Arnautovic produced 14 goals and 11 assists from 72 Bundesliga matches – with last season harvesting five goals and eight assists from 26 appearances – but his time with the German club was somewhat chequered; fights with team-mates and club suspensions for speeding backed up Mourinho’s previous claims. On the international stage, Arnautovic has turned out 37 times for his country, producing 10 goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Hailed as the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his move to Inter, Arnautovic isn’t short on skill or self-belief – a lack of application has been his downfall up until this point. A highly-talented individual, he was fielded almost exclusively on the right flank during his time at Bremen, though standing six foot three inches tall, he offers the Potters an intriguing option as a lone forward.

From a Fantasy perspective, his classification as a midfielder right across the games is particularly significant. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 4.9 in Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Austrian looks a budget-friendly proposition and will be fundamental to Hughes’ attempts to reform Stoke into a more attack-minded outfit after years of Tony Pulis’ less aesthetically-pleasing approach.

If Hughes has a midfield spot in mind for the new boy, Jon Walters’ owners have reason to be concerned. The Republic of Ireland international has played all three matches so far on the right and while he could be shifted to “the hole” behind a lone forward, Walters could also face competition from another new face, Stephen Ireland, for game time.

Alternatively, Arnautovic could take up the lone forward role – handing Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect as the Potters’ main goal threat. Peter Crouch started the first couple of Gameweeks but was dropped for Kenwyne Jones last week; the latter racked up a hat-trick in a recent Capital One Cup match but has been a peripheral figure under Hughes until now.

While back-to-back games against City and Arsenal will be enough to deter any would-be suitors for now, they should offer us a window into Hughes’ thinking and afford us the chance to assess where he intends to utilised Arnautovic. With three home games (NOR, WBA, SOT) and a trip to Fulham in four of the next five from Gameweek 6, Stoke’s upcoming schedule takes a turn for the better and, having grabbed six points from their first couple of fixtures, the Potters have been quick to adapt to their new manager’s approach as Hughes begins to prove the doubters wrong.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but here is a great article from Chemikills again on TotalFPL.com about the goals scored this season so far. Here is an

"In the last 3 seasons, the lowest goals per game in a gameweek across the Premier League season has been 1.80, thus the past 2 weeks of this season are the lowest scoring gameweeks in 3 seasons!"

    http://www.totalfpl.com/Articles/182/less-goals-this-season-yes-but-to-what-extent

Anyone switching to 5 at the back is absolutely insane. The goals will start to come and you'll be wishing you had another wildcard. I don't even see 4-3-3 as the way going forward but it could be useful some weeks with rotation. Slap some goal scoring mids in due to goals being favored to assists in bonus system with 3 heavy hitting forwards. Keep a nice, well-thought, "budget" defense. You'll be fine when the goals come around.

mmm but when a Holloway side is tight and an NLD is also a close affair then you know there's been a shift of sorts.

Would anyone have guessed that NOR and SOU defenders would feature in pre season plan this time last year.

More goals are on their way though.

NLD was always gonna be tight with Spurs loading the mid with the type of player they did.
Southampton and Norwich strenghtened by Wanyama/Lovren and Leroy Fer.. Norwich weren't too bad last year, anyway.

Where do you get the insane bit from. It has concluded that half of the downturn in goals is from fewer shots in box - which might be either less offensive play or better defending. It's silent on the rest but suggest this is just bad luck but could equally be better defending - more blocks - or it could be better keeping. More analysis is needed but as things stand we have a significant drop in goals and it could be equally optimistic to assume a return to normal.

Chiriches is a good ball playing centre back who's quick and likes to roam forward, bit like Vertonghen.
If it wasn't for dawson being captain I'd say he's likely to play. It may be a few weeks but would imagine he'll play more than Daws and Kaboul if everyone stays fit.

David Villa playing for Athletics in a fairly easy group. Adriano for Shaktar. Balotelli and El Shaaraway for Milan. I just put in a quick team but there'll be a few unknowns who'll get. A few. Anthony Stokjes, tough group, but he'll get a few and free cash elsewhere. Pick keepers from both game days so you can sub them and try and have a good split of players and captain options between both days. Mine, so far, is below, 1.5m in bank. Best of luck.

          Artur
          Maxwell, Alana, Garay, Ivanovic
          Mkhitaryan, Bender, Isco

3 goals in 3 games vs three of the best defences. Only behind Messi and Ronaldo in goals scored in 2013 in Europes top 5 leagues. I say hes just as good a pick as Boruc is in goal haha.

2 penalties v Arsenal. Scoreless at home to Pool. One goal in open play in 3 games and you're comparing him to Ronaldo and Messi. He's good but he needs 10 games at least before you can see what his form is like.

How was I comparing him to Messi and Ronaldo? Those are the only 2 players that have scored more goals than him this year (Since January 1 - not since GW1) its not a comparison...

You think you can judge PL form after just 3 games ? Sorry, I thought you meant just this season by the way. It's impressive stats. I never said he was not bad meh. He's quality, but I don't have him so I'll be biased and say I'll wait. And I don't use the lol thing, ever !

he's not really comparing his actual ability, in fact he's specifically saying Benteke isn't as good

It's not about ability on fantasy is it it's about what goes on paper and on paper he has 3 goals in 3 games this season which is 12 pts plus bonus + appearance, is that not quite simple to grasp?

    nani got me thinking.
who is the player you know would score good points (or simply good for their price) if given regular starts, and therefore really frustrates you as you are desperate to get them but their manager is refusing to play ball?

i'll throw my main one out there:

    Gaston Ramirez

Perhaps not a strict gambler's fallacy. But it's fair to say that previous history of consecutive blanks does not have any bearing on the chances of a goal in a given game.

No, it isn't. It's an assumption on your part. It's very possible that his (and his team's) determination and ability to adapt to lack of recent success will have some bearing on the probability of him blanking again.

Sorry but that has nothing whatsoever to do with how many times in previous seasons he has had 3 consecutive blanks.

I understand what you're saying, and you're right, the 'due' argument isn't a case of gambler's fallacy. You could say argue both ways and say that two blanks would make him hungrier, or that the stats show that - across all players - more games following 2 blanks are blank than are scored in. It's too complex to make any cast iron cases from.

But saying that 3 consecutive blanks now is less likely because of previous blank runs is total balderdash, and falls into the same category of faulty reasoning as gambler's fallacy.

I didn't say he was more or less likely to blank the next game overall, I said it's possible his 'three consecutive blank' history could have a bearing on the probability of it happening. Which it could, because RVP isn't a coin toss or a die throw and neither is his team.

If he in fact does have an established historical tendency to avoid 'third blanks' more often than to avoid blanks in general (as OP implied), then it's possible it isn't entirely by chance and that he is actively responding to the first two blanks to avoid a third. If that is the case then it will have a bearing on the probability of him blanking the next game and it's not just a case of saying 'RVP blanks 1 in x games therefore the chance of him blanking the next is 1 in x'.

I'm not saying OP is right or wrong, but you are wrong to dismiss the idea out of hand as a logical fallacy.

Ok, I will concede 🙂 I think the idea that he has some property of being third-blank averse is borderline mysticism. If indeed the numbers show that he is less likely to blank a third time than any other, I'd say it was so much more likely to be coincidence than a real effect. As Christopher Hitchens said, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And hypothesising that he has that near-magical property is no way to make decisions.

But I will concede that it is not physically impossible, and the events are not necessarily independent 🙂

He'll do grand. Not worth 300 grand a week or his price tag and will probably face a lot of torment for that, when you pay 100 million for a player the fans expect him to literally be the best player in the world by some margin. He isn't and won't be unfortunately but I hope he does well for himself.

quick UCL question.....is Lopez still the number 1 at Madrid? 3.5 seems an absolute bargain

Would it be advisable to go for mignolet and a 4.0 ( as I should have at the start) on my WC to avoid picking the wrong rotator?

Go for whichver choice you think will score the most points, you didn't make a wrong decision, you should nearly always play the home keeper.

    Members table updated.

The most attacking players so far this year, sorted by shots in the box, still the best indicator of actual goal scoring promise.

Giving me some comfort I may not be barking up the wrong tree completely. Not that it matters too much - I have far more pressing issues at hand!

May have already been discussed... but I'm considering Nani for GW4 +. 😯

Why!?! I hear you cry... well here's my thinking:

    1. Just signed a new 5 year contract. Must have had assurances by Moyes. Maybe trusts him to get back to his best. Nani is a big confidence player.

    2. Moyes (a known task master) has been impressed by Nani's training and commitment. This points to a player determined to perform ahead of the World Cup.

    3. At 7.4m he's mid priced. Unthinkable a couple of seasons ago when he sat at 9m +.

    4. Covers United for their good run of fixtures if avoiding RVP. Young and Valencia have been underwhelming for a while. Nani could nail down a spot in the front 3.

    5. A deadly player on his day. Lethal from both feet. Share of set pieces. Good crosser. If he starts against Palace he could rack up a great score. Why not get in early..?

    6. Great differential. Owned by practically nobody (0.2%).

Is it risky? Maybe. But the upsides may be worth it. Thoughts appreciated?

Think you're dead right tbh, the only bad thing about it is whether he'll start and that's it. If he does which is fairly likely he has everything going for him.

Could be a great shout. Was a massive differential last season at the back end when I ended up getting him. Didn't do much. Just a couple of assists in the 5 matches that he did feature in.
I hope it goes well for you

I think it's a great punt. iirc he was looking sharp in pre-season before he picked up a knock.

He's had his 'off the bench' game and I expect him to start the next match.

Cheers for the input guys... thought I may get the "end of page..." silence. 😉

Going to monitor him over the Int games, but if the signs are he'll start GW4, think I'm gonna swap him for Miralles.

      Is it risky? Maybe.

It is definitely risky, but the rewards are huge. I'd say wait till gw6 before you get him. If he plays gw4 and gw5, you know you can get him in.
