Scout Report – Marko Arnautovic

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his attacking options on deadline-day with the acquisition of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of five new faces at the club this summer along with Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Stephen Ireland.

Speaking to the Potters official website upon completion of the deal, Hughes admitted he’s been keeping an eye on the Austrian international for some time:

“Marko is a player we have been aware of for some time and I’m really pleased we have been able to add him to our squad. He has played at the highest level in Holland, Italy and Germany and is keen to make his mark in England with Stoke City.”

The History

A somewhat temperamental character, Arnautovic switched clubs five times during his youth career before finally settling with Dutch outfit FC Twente. After racking up the goals for the club’s youth team (22 goals in 24 games) and reserves (27 goals in 32 games) the Austrian made his senior debut towards the end of the 2006/07 season. The following year produced just a couple of assists from 14 league appearances before Arnautovic stepped up another level – 12 goals and six assists from 28 matches persuaded Italian outfit Inter to snap him up on a one-year loan deal.

Arnautovic’s time in Serie A was far from successful, though. A series of off-field indiscretions were not taken lightly by then-manager Jose Mourinho, who played him a mere three times in the league – the Portuguese boss reckons the player “is a fantastic person but has the attitude of a child”.

Picked up by Werder Bremen in the summer of 2010, Arnautovic produced 14 goals and 11 assists from 72 Bundesliga matches – with last season harvesting five goals and eight assists from 26 appearances – but his time with the German club was somewhat chequered; fights with team-mates and club suspensions for speeding backed up Mourinho’s previous claims. On the international stage, Arnautovic has turned out 37 times for his country, producing 10 goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Hailed as the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his move to Inter, Arnautovic isn’t short on skill or self-belief – a lack of application has been his downfall up until this point. A highly-talented individual, he was fielded almost exclusively on the right flank during his time at Bremen, though standing six foot three inches tall, he offers the Potters an intriguing option as a lone forward.

From a Fantasy perspective, his classification as a midfielder right across the games is particularly significant. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 4.9 in Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Austrian looks a budget-friendly proposition and will be fundamental to Hughes’ attempts to reform Stoke into a more attack-minded outfit after years of Tony Pulis’ less aesthetically-pleasing approach.

If Hughes has a midfield spot in mind for the new boy, Jon Walters’ owners have reason to be concerned. The Republic of Ireland international has played all three matches so far on the right and while he could be shifted to “the hole” behind a lone forward, Walters could also face competition from another new face, Stephen Ireland, for game time.

Alternatively, Arnautovic could take up the lone forward role – handing Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect as the Potters’ main goal threat. Peter Crouch started the first couple of Gameweeks but was dropped for Kenwyne Jones last week; the latter racked up a hat-trick in a recent Capital One Cup match but has been a peripheral figure under Hughes until now.

While back-to-back games against City and Arsenal will be enough to deter any would-be suitors for now, they should offer us a window into Hughes’ thinking and afford us the chance to assess where he intends to utilised Arnautovic. With three home games (NOR, WBA, SOT) and a trip to Fulham in four of the next five from Gameweek 6, Stoke’s upcoming schedule takes a turn for the better and, having grabbed six points from their first couple of fixtures, the Potters have been quick to adapt to their new manager’s approach as Hughes begins to prove the doubters wrong.

With Rooney probably out, Kagawa seemingly out of favour...

What odds on Fellaini playing "in the hole" against Palace, with Carrick and Cleverley in the double pivot?

attacking returns for Coleman are far more likely. Effectively, you are getting a decent winger, from a decent side for 5m (or so) with the added benefit of clean sheets = 4points instead of 1.

With Özil in Arsenal, Giroud will score even more. I can also imagine Özil taking the corners from the right side, curling it dangerously into the box to Giroud's advantage instead of Walcott's poor corners.
Also, more through balls through the centre to Walcott and Giroud's advantage. Arsenal's attack has improved a lot.

      Walcott, Mirallas, Silva, Michu, Jedinak

        Rip it to bits? Okay...

Sczezsny often looks terrible, flapping about and make ill-advised runs out of goal, but somehow manages clean sheets. He's overly reliant on the defenders in front of him covering his mistakes and that luck will run out. You tried too hard to be different when you should have just got Mignolet.

Celustka won't see a clean sheet for a long time between the bad schedule and nutty manager.

Brayford isn't getting off the bench anytime soon, lost his job to Connolly.

Figueroa? Everyone knows the Hull defender to own is Chester. Figueroa is not going to score from a free kick midfield again, ever, and there's no bonus points for it if he did.

Kolo lost his job to Sakho while laid up with a groin pull. Rude of Rodgers, but reality.

Zabaleta, a yellow card to be rotated later. Watch the England games and tell us how you can't see how much Hart stinks. Could spend comparable funds for a Chelsea defender that will get twice as many clean sheets and a few goals.

Walcott. Let's just hope he comes good before he gets hurt. It is Arsenal, after all.

Mirallas gets points for most use of hair gel on a mohawk and that's about it. Only good thing he will do for his team this season is convincing Lukaku to join the team to score the goals for him.

Silva is so two years ago. He gets one lucky header into the goal and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. He'll be assisting the assister more often than not, and assists are of no use with the bonus system.

Michu is firing blanks and you can just as well own Hernandez for Swansea coverage when their schedule turns good in another three weeks - why would you buy a Swansea player this early?

Jedinak runs up and down the pitch nicely. Will do nothing and is not earning you team value, which is the only use of a 5th midfielder anyway. Should have jumped on that Barkley bandwagon while you could. Brady's is still available.

Sturridge is made of glass and he's going to lose goals to Suarez. So he scored goals in the first 3 games of the season, do you think he's going to score 38? or is it more likely that his best games of the season are already past him?

Soldado can't score without a penalty. This has been established. How many more penalties do you think Spurs will get being as they got zero last season?

Lambert's in his early 30s already and the coach brought in Osvaldo to replace him. His prime was wasted in lower leagues because talent evaluation at the top levels is embarrassingly dreadful. Doesn't matter though. His prime is gone and its not coming back. Step aside for Osvaldo Rickie.

        Ah... that's it then.

I actually own Walcott, Soldado, and Michu. Defense does need the most work. Rest is good enough.

Aguero and Silva were bith removed early against Hull. He's got the players to do it and I'm pretty sure he said he was going to do it.

For the price of those players I want to know they're going to start, and finish, pretty much all matches.

Now your just implying that because they should start the majority, they should be considered, which imo is playing the coverage card. I don't think Navas or Yaya are strong enough fpl assets to be pissing 8m+ of your budget away with. Their stats really dont make for good reading. I'm not sure people are not having Silva. Lots do, as they think he's fairly nailed on. But some are ignoring, not because of rotation, but because they don't fancy Silva for FPL. Aguero has been in awful form, so he's right to be sold imo. If he can nail down his place, proof he's rotation proof, and find form again then lots will reconsider. 11m is too much for these uncertainties

Well, that's just a matter of opinion. City have been scoring goals, and they might well have attackers that will be first choice, when fit. If people don't fancy Silva for FPL, fine, but if the team is averaging almost 3 goals a game, then I'm sensing points from one of their creative players.

A 9.4, 11.0, 8.8 and 9.0 million player is too much hassle to have on the assumption they "might" play.

Something I disagree with is the "ozil will get walcott and giroud more points" view.

Not saying I'm 100% right but I prefer 1 man team players.

Last year; bale, rvp, michu, lambert, benteke, suarez
All significantly better than their team mates.

Teams with equal level players tended to share the points.
I prefer the likes of rvp, soldado, tekkers etc still as they will be by far the main goal outlet for their sides.

I actually could see giroud doing well this year, but I also think Podolski might a fair few get games up front to allow room for Cazorla Walcott and Ozil.

I'm pretty sure this question's been brought up several times already but I either haven't read the answer/have forgotten it (or the most popular answer anyway)

        LAMELA OR ERIKSEN?

I'm currently on team Lamela here but would like some input...

If I have no Tottenham coverage whatsoever, and have RVP, who would you pick:

        a) Walker

        b) Vidic

RMT is saying Walker is the better choice?

Is it me or is it a bit silly for players like Sturridge to get yellow-flagged if they have small knocks and become a doubt for international fixtures, even though there's nothing to suggest they wont be fit for the next league game?

After all it's called FPL not FTL[Three Lions], lol
