Scout Scribbles – Toure On Course for Liberty Return

Kolo Toure returns to training and is confident of making Liverpool’s trip to Swansea next Monday evening. Andy Carroll suffers a foot injury setback upon his return to West Ham training, Ian Holloway loses a couple of players to ankle injuries, while Villa new boy Jores Okore reveals he’s finally match-fit after sustaining a hamstring injury over the summer:

Toure Back in Training

Reports in the local press suggest Kolo Toure is in line to be fit for Liverpool’s Gameweek 4 trip to Swansea. The Ivorian missed the previous league encounter against United due to a groin injury but returned to training yesterday and with the Liberty clash not taking place until next Monday evening, is afforded plenty time for recuperation. His performances over the first couple of league fixtures have earned plenty praise from Brendan Rodgers, with the Reds boss saying:

“Kolo is the type of character that I love in a back four, an organiser and a leader. I think whether he’s playing with Daniel or whether he’s playing with Martin Skrtel, you need that leadership. Daniel’s a wonderful talent, he’s an international captain, he’s one of the best left-sided players in the world, so it’s two experienced players, but it’s important that you play together, and they’ve held us together really well.”

The Scout Says: Toure’s potential return gives Rodgers plenty to consider as he attempts to preserve the last 100% defensive record in the Premier League. New boy Mahamadou Sakho is pushing for a place alongside Daniel Agger, while Martin Skrtel impressed in the 1-0 win over David Moyes’ side – given that Sakho has been hailed as “a marquee signing” we may quickly get an idea of just where Toure stands in the pecking order. With a price tag of just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the former Arsenal and City player has afforded us a budget-friendly route into Liverpool’s defence but it remains to be seen if he can hold off the challenge of Sakho for a regular role. Rodgers has the alternative of fielding him at full-back if Glen Johnson is ruled out with a knee injury but the Ivorian’s comparative lack of mobility down the flank may see Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly favourite to deputise on the right.

New Setback for Carroll

West Ham have confirmed Andy Carroll has sustained another foot injury upon his return to first-team training yesterday. Having failed to feature this term due to a heel problem, the summer signing had been expected to return for Saturday’s trip to Southampton but according to the club’s official website:

“Although it is in the same part of his foot as his previous injury, it is a new injury and therefore there will be no prognosis until he has seen a specialist.”

The Scout Says: Having failed to add to their forward options towards the end of the transfer window, West Ham look drastically short of option up top should Carroll be set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. Sam Allardyce’s side have failed to score since the 2-0 home win over Cardiff back in Gameweek 1 and with doubts over both Joe Cole and Stewart Downing ahead of the St Mary’s clash, it’s likely that Modibo Maiga will lead the line once again, with Ricardo Vaz Te coming in from the cold to take a place on the right flank. With showdowns against Everton, Spurs and City in the next five, Carroll’s likely absence is a worrying sign for Allardyce’s side – with unconfirmed reports suggesting he could be out for up to three months, Allardyce is scouring the free agent market and is rumoured to be closing in on a deal for former Fulham forward Mladen Petric.

Okore Looks to Make His Mark

Aston Villa’s new centre-half Jores Okore has spoken of his determination to make an impact at the back after a hamstring problem curtailed him game time over the summer period:

“I hurt my hamstring in pre-season, but I am feeling good now and I’m feeling comfortable. I don’t feel anything in my hamstring any more. Now I just need to get some air in my lungs and then I’m good to go. I feel fine now and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Sidelined for the first match of Villa’s double Gameweek 1, Okore climbed off the bench to replace Nathan Baker for the following fixture against Chelsea. The Danish international was then afforded his first start for Paul Lambert’s side against Liverpool last time out and now looks in the driving seat to retain his place alongside Ron Vlaar in the heart of the midlanders’ backline ahead of both Baker and Ciaran Clark. Coming in at 4.4 in FPL, Okore could be one to watch if he can replicate the goal threat that saw him score four times in the league for FC Nordsjælland last season.

Injury Woes for Holloway

Crystal Palace were dealt a double injury blow yesterday with news that Jack Hunt and youngster Jonathan Williams are set for spells on the sidelines. Hunt –who has only just arrived from Huddersfield – has sustained a broken ankle in training for the Eagles, while Williams is reported to have picked up ankle ligament damage in Wales’ game against Macedonia last weekend could be out for anything between six weeks and five months.

The Scout Says: Hunt’s absence merely underlines the importance of regular right-back Joel Ward for Holloway’s side. With left-back Jonathan Parr stepping up his fitness, Dean Moxey’s security of starts is no longer guaranteed, while the acquisition of Adrian Mariappa gives Holloway further options at centre-half – Ward, at 4.0 in FPL, looks the most secure of Palace’s cut-price defensive assets. Williams has been introduced from the bench in all three Gameweeks so far but with Holloway snapping up the likes of Jason Puncheon, Jimmy Kebe and Jerome Thomas in a 16-player shopping spree over the summer, his game time looked far from certain prior to yesterday’s news.

To all those seeking tenuous and non-statistically founded validation for the selection of Lamela in your teams, I dreamt that he scores this gameweek. So he's a shoe in.

    I have £15.3m to spend on 4th defender + 4th and 5th midfielders.

    Currently have Collins, Hernandez, JWP.

Are there better options in those price ranges?

RVP or no RVP debate. What a painful decision for an FPL manager to have to make. On the one hand, there is no better time to get RVP in than when you're on a wildcard and he plays Crystal Palace at home with a great run of fixtures to follow. On the other hand he is obscenely expensive and severely hurts the rest of your team.

I was thinking, surely it must be viewed as safer to not have RVP. A lot of people refer to him as a safety blanket, but with the amount of impact his price has on the rest of your squad, your team is completely relying on him to score well.

Lets say in the unlikely event he doesn't score against Palace or City. Obviously he will be captained, so with that coupled with the fact that the rest of the team has been severely weakened to accommodate him, the damage to your points total could be significant.

At least in a team with Giroud (for example) instead of RVP, you have the backup of another 9.0 mid and a 6/6.5 defender to make your points should Giroud not score (and there is every possibility that Giroud will score as much, if not more than RVP). With RVP in your team, you don't have that back up.

On the other hand, Van Persie is Van Persie and will most likely score loads of goals over the next 8 weeks. With him as your captain you have two Van Persies. This could land you with a huge points haul.

I'm still undecided on which route to go. I change my mind daily. But I dunno...something doesn't feel quite right with Manchester United and RVP at the moment. If Fergie was still there I wouldn't think twice about sticking him in. But with all this change going on at the club, its not out of the question that Robin may go on a goal drought. And they haven't injected any new blood into the team, with the exception of Fellaini (who should boost Man U defenders appeal but notsomuch attackers).

What do you guys think? I know that discussion of this topic is going on and on, and there is no right answer, but I'd love to get a collection of your views on this in one place.

If Fergie was there and Kagawa was playing behind VP both Kags and VP would be in my team. However none of that is happening and for that he won't be. A world class striker needs world class support.

For overall rank, you will suffer a lot if he goes wild with points. But relying on him so much is risky as you say, who will step up for your team if he blanks? I think not having him gives you more of a safety blanket this season.

the thing is, who are these good alternatives in the 9m range? Apart from Wally, and maybe Coutinho (but I dont see him scoring too many goals, just lots of assists), who are they? Michu another possibility I guess. But this is barely the essential holy trinity and it doesnt look like it's gonna compare to the Bale, Wally, Mata template of last season.

Silva has upped his goal threat quite a bit this season though. If he carries on as he started the season he'll have a lot more than assists in his locker. Fairly big 'if' though.

He's expensive but I don't think he has to ruin the team as I look at the 9.0+ mids and don't see anyone like Bale who can be relied on to bang them in. Walcott and that's about it.

So I'm having him in on a wildcard and if I do feel like Man Utd aren't the same and he's not worth it, then I'll sell. Far far easier to sell him than buy him on FTs.

Plus, if you subscribe to coverage, it would be enough to have a United defender plus a midfielder if one of their ridiculously cheap midfielders hits consistency, gets nailed on and has more than 30% goal involvement.

You make a good argument Bubz. But for me its comes down strictly to captaincy. If I were to captain Giroud, for example, and he were to do nothing i would feel a bit silly looking back on my decision. However, if I were to captain RVP and he were to do nothing I don't think I would be as aggrieved. The reason being, that it's always justifiable to captain him home or away. The headache of always trying to figure out who to captain ( perhaps the most significant part of the game) is made that much easier by having him and captaining him.

I think we have to realise that a team with RVP can actually contain other good back ups. I haven't started great this year but I still think I have a decent team with some good "back ups". As well as RVP,my team includes Benteke, Soldado, Walcott, Ozil (previously Cout) and Hernadez with a decent defence consisting of Coleman, Zab, Shaw and Collins. I'm sure you will agree that there is still plenty quality available fran RVP team.

Im going with RVP for now. The premium midfielders seems like a bit of a lottery at the moment - none of us can say for sure which ones, except walcott, will be firing all season or are nailed etc. What's less of a lottery is whether RVP will score or not - of course he's going to score goals!

Plus, if you go with him and feel it's not working out, reverting back to a non-RVP team is much less hassle than the surgery required to transform your team into an RVP team.

    Migs Daniels

    Coleman Walker Kosh Burner Chester

    Eriksen Lamela Wally Lamps JWP

    Giroud Tekkers Studge.

My biggest concern is Ozil, despite what some say I think he's going to be a very big one for Arsenal. I know owning both Eriksen and Lamela is punty but I expect both to be nailed on and a very nice run of fixtures.

Agree that Lamela is ahead in the pecking order and will play this weekend. Eriksen only a maybe. I honestly think Norwich will get a result at Spurs though. They're more organised as a unit and Hughton will be telling them to take advantage of the lack of cohesion at Spurs.

They are that but I think Norwich have their own issues, namely struggling with goals. Still a side in transition, just further along the transition than Spurs are.

As for Coutinho, I unfortunately have a bit of a hang up with that lad. Having watched him all his career I know that he struggles with consistency and form dips so when I see him struggling a bit I automatically worry.

    PAULINHO

do u think paulinho will be the one to watch at 7mil and with a good scoring record, should spurs line up 4-3-3- with paulinho the most advanced of the 3 midfielders?

    thanks

With Capoue injured and Lamela and Erikson now in the squad, Paulinho is unlikely to play in an advanced role.

If they play 4-3-3 it'll be the reverse pivot, i.e.

      Lloris
      Walker Vertonghen Dawson Rose
      Paulinho Dembele Eriksen
      Lamela Soldado Chadli

with Dembele playing deep and Pauli & Eriksrn playing high

What do you guys think of this wildcard team?

    Mignolet--Lewis

    Coleman--Fonte--Yanga-Mbiwa--Evra--Chester

    Walcott--B.Arfa--Lampard--Michu--Ward-Prowse

    Benteke--Giroud--Sturridge

1.1 in the bank so if Sturridge is not fit will have enough to put Soldado in for him.

    Anything I should change/upgrade?

Thought Herd was a midfielder 😉 I remember seeing an article saying eventually he might need to give him some rest, but it didn't sound imminent.

“I don’t know if he needs a break yet, but sometimes it’s important you don’t put too much emphasis on him at every point."

RVP and Suarez in a front 2

a cheap 3rd striker as first sub

i can play 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 depending on fixtures.

Their both expensive yes but proven class and no real rotation risk.

How many are considering Swansea players at the moment?
I've got quite a few of them earmarked for a transfer but not yet. I need to see a little more from them as they still seem a little toothless and their fixtures are poor.

      All depends on RVP.

not bad at all, especially if you like what you have long term. I personally as a bias united fan would feel a bit naked with no Vidic/Evra or RVP

ok on the subject of WC team, what are the thoughts on the below??

    Before WC:

    Migs / Boruc
    Toure / ShawX / Coleman / Reither / Garrido
    Silva / Coutinho / Brady / Walcott / Morrison
    Lambert / Giroud / Soldado

    Current WC lineup without RVP:

    Migs / Boruc
    Evra / ShawX / Coleman / Reither / Chambers
    Walcott / Yaya / Lampard / Hernandez / Brady
    Lambert / Giroud / Soldado

    WC option 2 with RVP:

    1) Soldado > RVP
    2) Giroud > Fletcher 7.5m fwd
    one of
    3a) Lampard > 5.8m mid OR
    3b) Walcott > 7.2m mid

    any feedback appreciated - Cheers

    Evening all

According to the RMT tool the highest scoring 4.5m defender between now and Christmas is predicted to be Ron Vlaar of Aston Villa. I find this quite remarkable.

Yeah, he won't be. But Villa do look much more solid than last season.

    Current team:

    Mignolet Given*
    Zabaleta Koscielny Coleman Dawson Chester*
    Walcott Silva Lampard Hernandez Ward-Prowse*
    Sturridge Benteke Giroud

Am I spending too much on a core 12 (anticipating playing the fixtures to an extent to drop Hernandez or a 4th defender)? Would it be better to focus the money into a core 11? Any thoughts would help.
