Scout Scribbles – Toure On Course for Liberty Return

Kolo Toure returns to training and is confident of making Liverpool’s trip to Swansea next Monday evening. Andy Carroll suffers a foot injury setback upon his return to West Ham training, Ian Holloway loses a couple of players to ankle injuries, while Villa new boy Jores Okore reveals he’s finally match-fit after sustaining a hamstring injury over the summer:

Toure Back in Training

Reports in the local press suggest Kolo Toure is in line to be fit for Liverpool’s Gameweek 4 trip to Swansea. The Ivorian missed the previous league encounter against United due to a groin injury but returned to training yesterday and with the Liberty clash not taking place until next Monday evening, is afforded plenty time for recuperation. His performances over the first couple of league fixtures have earned plenty praise from Brendan Rodgers, with the Reds boss saying:

“Kolo is the type of character that I love in a back four, an organiser and a leader. I think whether he’s playing with Daniel or whether he’s playing with Martin Skrtel, you need that leadership. Daniel’s a wonderful talent, he’s an international captain, he’s one of the best left-sided players in the world, so it’s two experienced players, but it’s important that you play together, and they’ve held us together really well.”

The Scout Says: Toure’s potential return gives Rodgers plenty to consider as he attempts to preserve the last 100% defensive record in the Premier League. New boy Mahamadou Sakho is pushing for a place alongside Daniel Agger, while Martin Skrtel impressed in the 1-0 win over David Moyes’ side – given that Sakho has been hailed as “a marquee signing” we may quickly get an idea of just where Toure stands in the pecking order. With a price tag of just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the former Arsenal and City player has afforded us a budget-friendly route into Liverpool’s defence but it remains to be seen if he can hold off the challenge of Sakho for a regular role. Rodgers has the alternative of fielding him at full-back if Glen Johnson is ruled out with a knee injury but the Ivorian’s comparative lack of mobility down the flank may see Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly favourite to deputise on the right.

New Setback for Carroll

West Ham have confirmed Andy Carroll has sustained another foot injury upon his return to first-team training yesterday. Having failed to feature this term due to a heel problem, the summer signing had been expected to return for Saturday’s trip to Southampton but according to the club’s official website:

“Although it is in the same part of his foot as his previous injury, it is a new injury and therefore there will be no prognosis until he has seen a specialist.”

The Scout Says: Having failed to add to their forward options towards the end of the transfer window, West Ham look drastically short of option up top should Carroll be set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. Sam Allardyce’s side have failed to score since the 2-0 home win over Cardiff back in Gameweek 1 and with doubts over both Joe Cole and Stewart Downing ahead of the St Mary’s clash, it’s likely that Modibo Maiga will lead the line once again, with Ricardo Vaz Te coming in from the cold to take a place on the right flank. With showdowns against Everton, Spurs and City in the next five, Carroll’s likely absence is a worrying sign for Allardyce’s side – with unconfirmed reports suggesting he could be out for up to three months, Allardyce is scouring the free agent market and is rumoured to be closing in on a deal for former Fulham forward Mladen Petric.

Okore Looks to Make His Mark

Aston Villa’s new centre-half Jores Okore has spoken of his determination to make an impact at the back after a hamstring problem curtailed him game time over the summer period:

“I hurt my hamstring in pre-season, but I am feeling good now and I’m feeling comfortable. I don’t feel anything in my hamstring any more. Now I just need to get some air in my lungs and then I’m good to go. I feel fine now and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Sidelined for the first match of Villa’s double Gameweek 1, Okore climbed off the bench to replace Nathan Baker for the following fixture against Chelsea. The Danish international was then afforded his first start for Paul Lambert’s side against Liverpool last time out and now looks in the driving seat to retain his place alongside Ron Vlaar in the heart of the midlanders’ backline ahead of both Baker and Ciaran Clark. Coming in at 4.4 in FPL, Okore could be one to watch if he can replicate the goal threat that saw him score four times in the league for FC Nordsjælland last season.

Injury Woes for Holloway

Crystal Palace were dealt a double injury blow yesterday with news that Jack Hunt and youngster Jonathan Williams are set for spells on the sidelines. Hunt –who has only just arrived from Huddersfield – has sustained a broken ankle in training for the Eagles, while Williams is reported to have picked up ankle ligament damage in Wales’ game against Macedonia last weekend could be out for anything between six weeks and five months.

The Scout Says: Hunt’s absence merely underlines the importance of regular right-back Joel Ward for Holloway’s side. With left-back Jonathan Parr stepping up his fitness, Dean Moxey’s security of starts is no longer guaranteed, while the acquisition of Adrian Mariappa gives Holloway further options at centre-half – Ward, at 4.0 in FPL, looks the most secure of Palace’s cut-price defensive assets. Williams has been introduced from the bench in all three Gameweeks so far but with Holloway snapping up the likes of Jason Puncheon, Jimmy Kebe and Jerome Thomas in a 16-player shopping spree over the summer, his game time looked far from certain prior to yesterday’s news.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Solid for a RVP team but would change coleman to Gabbidon and Ferdinand to Evra for much better united coverage.

Don't take this the wrong way: it looks exactly the same as every other RVP team I've seen.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing but I wonder what fresh insight you thought you might get beyond looking at the responses to all the others?

I am being forced to play UCL this year or the school bully will duff me up.

Given that I know two fists of nothing about the European teams, I would greatly appreciate some help.

I need to find one or two cheap but playing for each of defence and midfield and cheap goalie.

Now when I say cheap, think in FPL terms 4.0mil Def, 5.0mil Mid. With about tuppence left for a goalie who must keep at least four CSs in the group stage.

OK off you go. Many thanks BTW. 🙂

      UCL Budget list

Skipped some teams where I saw no obvious budget players and where pen taker is obvious. When I have written 6/7 that means has played in 6 out of 7 possible games indicating to possible rotation threat. I also did not add pen taker where it was impossible to know for sure.

      Ajax- Poulsen, Enoh(4.5mid), Van Rhijn(4/5, 4 def) PEN- Sigurthsson(but not 100% sure)
Anderlecht- Bruno(4 mid/5 goals 2 assists in 6 games, leading scorer), 4.0 mid Luka Miliotevic, PEN- Gillet
      Arsenal- Koscielny 5.0 mil def
Atletico-Cortuois 4.5 mil keeper PEN- Costa
Austria Wien- Ortlechner(3.5 def), Daniel Royer 4 mil mid 6/7
      Barcelona- Masherano, Alba 6.5 def
      Basel- PEN- Schär
Bayern- Boateng 5.5 def 3/4, alaba 6 mil def on pens
Benfica- Djuricic- 4.5 mid 2/3 PEN- Cardozo
      CSKA- Zuber 4.0 mid
Celtic- Ambrose 3.5 def PEN- Commons
      Chelsea- Oscar 7.5 mid
Dortmund- Subotic 6 mil PEN- Lewa and Reus taken 1
      Juventus- Lichtsteiner 5.5 def
FC Kobenhavn- Wilan 3.5 keeper, Bengtsson 3.5 def, Delanay 4 mil mid Pen- Kristensen(1 taken)
      Leverkusen- Spahic,Toprac 4 mil defs,
Man City- Nastasic, Clichy 5.5 defs, Nasri 6.5
Man Utd- De Gea, Rafael 5.5,
Marseile- Mandanda GK 4 mil PEN- Andre Ayew
Napoli- Britos 5 mil def PEN- Hamsik(as he took them when Cavani did not last year, could be wrong)
      Olympiacos- PEN- Saviola
      PSG-Maxwell 5.5 def
Plzen- Horvath 4.0 mid takes pens 3 goals and 3 assists in CL Qualis, is captain too, but 5/7
Porto- Josue 4.5 mid 2 goals 2 assists in 3 games and on pens
Real Madrid- Diego Lopez 3.5 keeper, Marcelo 5.0 defender,
Real Sociedad- Bravo 4.0 keeper, PEN- Vela or Prieto both same amount last year
Shalke- Fuchs 4.5 def and Uchida 4 mil def both 3/4 games PEN- Farfan or Klaas
Shaktar Donetsk- Bernard 4.5 mid, The 3.5 keeper Kanibolotskiy is one to keep an eye on as he has been rotated places with Pyatov and played the same amount of games
Steua. Filop 4 mil mid ( 2 goals in 4 leading scorer)

No. Ferdinand is first choice and currently in the team but may be rested occasionally. Sakho I don't think will start on Monday so will have to work his way into the team. You don't want to have a non-starting expensive defender on your bench.

So having seen a couple of Rvp RMTs here, I thought I'd stick my one on. I know it could be better and Lukaku could come in soon to give the extra cash to upgrade other areas but as it stands...

    Boruc

    Coleman Zabs Shaw Collins

    Walcott Ozil Hernandez

    Rvp Benteke Soldado

    Bench: Davies. Barkley. Ward. Parker.

    Any thoughts?

I think the feeling here is that he gets so many assists, which he does, that he will be of more benefit to W&G. I think people are so focused on the assists that they may forget that heroes also find the net himself with decent regularity. He's the second name on my team sheet now and I think he will make a mockery of his 10 mil valuation come May

Thing about Whittingham (and Cardiff in general) is that they seem to play all the big teams at home this half of the season, and the crap teams away. Means it is harder to idenitfy the fixtures you should play them in.

2nd half of the season this will of course reverse and they'll be nice and easy to rotate in and out of your team

Yaya scores what he scores. He will probably, barring injuries or ACN, score the same this season as well. Owning him is problematic in the sence that you can never predict when his points will come. Therefore you need to have him all the time in order to get all his points, or, you would have to punt on him by not having him all the time. That could go either way.

While sitting here today very tempted to make a few transfers based on performances over the opening 3 weeks of the season, I had a quick look back to this time last year! Here are a few interesting facts I discovered...

After 3 games last season, Man City and Man Utd had both conceeded 5 goals each, with neither club yet managing a clean sheet. In fact City would wait until GW7 for their first one, yet ended up with the most in the PL, 18. United would later go on a run of 6 in a row!

Liverpool conceeded 7 goals in their first 3 games, but went on to provide us with 14 clean sheets over the season. Arsenal hadn't conceeded at all at this stage last season, prompting many of us on wildcards to go heavy on their defence..they then conceeded goals in all of their next 4 matches!

Those of us looking for budget defenders at this stage might have been impressed by Wigan keeping a clean sheet in their first away match of the season..but they followed this up with only 4 more, home or away, all season, the next one in November!

West Brom had already kept 2 clean sheets by now and their defenders looked good value..but they followed this up with only 5 more all season.

Spurs had neither won a game nor kept a clean sheet.

Stoke's attack/midfield looked promising as they scored 3 times in their first 2 away matches. They ended the season as the league's second lowest scorers.

Player wise, as has been well documented here already, Gareth Bale had neither scored nor assisted at this stage last season. Benteke (19) hadn't got on the score sheet either. While Suarez (23) and Lukaku (17) had scored 1 each.

Down at Chelsea, new boy Hazard was the must have player, especially for the opening double gameweek, while Mata was nowhere..yet the Spaniard ended the season with 2 more goals, 2 more assists and 22 more points than the Belgian. Torres already had 2 goals, prompting many of us to wonder if he was back in business...he'd score only 6 more in the league all season.

This is just meant as a fun lookback to where we were during the Sept break last season..but there is a serious point too I think and that's to try not to be too too influenced by the opening weeks of a season, which can throw up some strange results, form and apparent patterns, which can sometimes be misleading!

After all, this time next year a smiliar exercise would note that United and Everton both failed to score for 2 consecutive matches, Everton didn't win at all, West Ham kept 2 clean sheets, Spurs only scored penalties etc etc. I wouldn't mind betting things will change on those fronts and many more over the next few weeks!

Good Luck with your wildcards/transfers 🙂

The fixtures could well warrant it if they're all raking in the points

I currently have Walcott and giroud. But coutinho may make way for ozil if he doesnt start firing.

no as I think Giroud has been lucky, and Ozil wont get enough goals to be a FPL success. I kind of have a bad experience from every time using him in euro or UCL fantasy- always been shaite

lucky? he is main arsenal striker

wven if he is not world class he will constantly chip in with goals and assist cause arsenal is so atacking and creative

guys this is just my opinon. So I can be 100% wrong. But for me the first goal was genius, second goal he was lucky that his awful touch landed in front of him and vs Tott he was lukcy to have Dawson the slowest CB in the league covering him in a high line- huge defensive error

Giroud has scored with 3 out of his 4 shots on target. Last season he scored every 4th shot on target. And his shots to shot on target ratio has not changed. I see a huge downgrade coming here for him.

But I will be the first to admit I am wrong if he keeps scoring, but this is just the strategy I follow.

Got 2 of 3 atm, considering Ozil as the third Ars player. Not sure yet.

They can't all score. I'm Sticking with Walcott and leaving Ozil out.

I think i'm set in going without Rvp, even without him is a nightmare to choose 3 strikers. So i'm thinking this:
    Migs-4.0
    Walker-Chester-Vidic-Coleman-Yanga
    Ozil-Eriksen-Redmond-Walcott-Brady
    Soldado-Benteke-Giroud

gw6 i'm getting Suarez probably for Benteke(Villa-City). Going heavy with North London teams as i can't see massive rotation like City or Chelsea and they have great fixtures.

I like this but I keep getting criticism for the Redmond/Brady combo. I see you've gone for Eriksen - interesting. Have you seen much of him?

          Looks great!

he is a wonder kid, 8.0 bargain imo, spurs great fixtues also! Brady/Redmond seems better than Brady/JWP.

btw- what did i told you about Nadal yesterday

That serb is anywhere near close to Nadal talent and preformances

Nadal will dominate in next season as well and looking forward to see season without Serb taking any Slam title

    Murray and Nadal FTW

shame my prediction was 3-0 and nadal has smashed him only 3-1
