Moving Target

Moving Target – Peter Odemwingie

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his eighth of the summer transfer window by acquiring Peter Odemwingie from West Brom on a three-year contract. The 32-year-old arrives for a reported fee of £2.5m, with the Welsh club beating Stoke and Swansea to his signature in a frantic transfer deadline-day scramble:

Speaking to the press after completing the deal, the Bluebirds boss admitted Odemwingie’s time in the top-flight with the Baggies was a key factor in his decision to splash the cash:

“I’m delighted to sign a player with a proven record of scoring in the Premier League. Peter’s record speaks for itself. He’s versatile, got great pace and does bring us that bit of experience we need. He’s an outstanding footballer at Premier League level, an intelligent footballer with a bit of guile. I spent a lot of time with him and he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person too. He’s going to prove an asset for Cardiff City of that I’ve no doubt.”

The History

Born in the Soviet Union, Odemwingie came through the youth system at CSKA Moscow before kicking off his career in Nigeria with Bendel Insurance. After notching 19 times in 53 appearances between 2000 and 2002, he was picked up by Belgian club La Louviere in the summer of 2002. Odemwingie’s time in the Jupiler Pro League lasted a couple of years – with nine goals accrued over 44 appearances he was snapped up by French club Lille prior to the end of the summer transfer window in 2004/05.

Having racked up 23 goals and 11 assists from 75 Ligue 1 appearances, the Nigerian was on his travels yet again, with Lokomotiv Moscow shelling out $14m for his services in July 2007. His time in Russia produced near-identical statistics, with 21 goals and 11 assists from 74 league matches before Odemwingie rolled up to the Hawthorns in August 2010.

The 32-yeard-old immediately took the Premier League by storm and, handing Fantasy managers a real cut-price contender for their three-man frontlines, produced 15 goals and nine assists in 32 games over his debut season. Odemwingie’s second year was far less successful, with 10 goals and three assists accrued from 30 appearances, while his final term at the midlands outfit proved something of a disappointment – a move to QPR was denied in the most public of fashions last January and, handed a peripheral role under Steve Clarke, he managed just five goals and three assists from 25 matches, with 12 of those games coming courtesy of the bench. On the international stage, Odemwingie has turned out for his country on 55 occasions and found the net nine times.

The Prospects

Mackay’s praise would certainly suggest the former Baggie hasn’t just been purchased to warm the Bluebirds’ bench all season. Although the Cardiff boss hailed the Nigerian’s versatility, it seems he is likely to earn most of his game time on the flank – Mackay somewhat tellingly admitted in an interview earlier this week that winger Craig Conway was omitted from the club’s 25-man squad as a result of Odemwingie’s arrival.

At present, Craig Bellamy and Peter Whittingham still look in the driving seat for the flank roles but, given that the former picked up a few injuries last term and the latter suffered from a lack of form and failed to find the net after October, Mackay has clearly drafted in Odemwingie as a viable alternative for the wing roles, with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt. Strength is depth is crucial for the Cardiff boss but the new boy’s arrival could cut into both Bellamy and Whittingham’s game time, with the likes of Craig Noone shifting further down the pecking order.

Coming in at 5.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Odemwingie’s classification as a forward across the Fantasy games looks problematic, though his adaptability could see him utilised through the middle late on in games if Mackay’s switches to a two-man frontline when chasing a result. Certainly, with Fraizer Campbell and Andreas Cornelius currently number one and two for the lone forward role, it would take a spate of injuries to promote him to a central position and bring him into our Fantasy thinking. For now, it’s a case of “wait and see” but as the season unfolds, there would be no surprise to see Mackay increasingly turn to the Nigerian’s experience and proven Premier League record as he looks to rack up the points to secure his side’s safety.

People that have used their WC to capture double price rises, how much have you earned?

For example, rise 0.2m = 0.1m extra for you to spend.

Ronh, it's not just the absolute gain in selling price you want from an early WC as this is never sufficient to justify it's use. You also get to jump on lots of longer term value punts that the rest of us can only manage in stages. In TV terms should be 1.0-1.5m gain compared to a similar non-WC team.

In terms of real money ie 0.1 mil for every 2 rises a player makes then no one can have made more than 0.3 because only 3 players have risen twice.

A)I have same keepers as you and ive gone for Boruc this week and this week only, liverpool are on fine form and migs is a class keeper - but they can't keep cleanies all the time

+ West ham have literally no attack apart from Nolan....Carroll, Downing and J.Cole are all out.

      I've gone with Boruc.

      B) Coleman - on attacking basis only, will concede.

      C) Toss a coin. I've got Benteke as captain.

Not the best FPL player but I am a Chelsea fan and I can't quite understand all this love for Lampard. Don't get me wrong, he was and still is a brilliant player... but c'mon, the guy is 35 now and granted he has looked after himself tremendously well over the years, I just can't see him playing as regularly as people are hoping.

I'm not so sure, as I think Lampard will start most weeks and don't see him being rotated much. When you watch him play you would never know he was 35. He has always been a fit player who looked after himself and has not really had bad injuries that I can recall. Saying that, who knows what Mourinho thinks.

Lamala is nailed on and will score goals. How any one thinks Tottenham could justify spending 30 mil on a player to rotate is madness. They just don't have the squad to be easing in a player of his quality. Having come from Italy I don't think he will find it as hard to settle as Soldado from spain, Italian defences are all well organised and tacticaly sound, he scored 15 last season!! I think he is the direct replacement for Bale, when did he ever get rested?? Erikkson will also play though I think he is more a goal creater than scorer. He did take most of Ajax's corners and free kicks

Already done Miralles -> Hernandez with my free.

    Now considering:

    Silva -> Ozil (-4) and possibly Toure -> Vidic / Agger (-8)

    -- Not convinced by Silva.
-- If Toure doesnt play it will be Chester (CAR).

I already have Walcott and Giroud but i think Ozil will boss it this year.

I see the Toure -> Vidic / Agger as expensive but will potentially 'buy' myself a transfer as either are likely to keep a clean sheet and its the move that i would make the following week anyway.

Can everyone on a WC please take out Mertersacker till tomorrow?

Replace him for Kosc, then when he drops down to 5.4 we can just do a straight swap and get Mert back.

    Thanks 😀

It's not 100% accurate but it's the nearest we have.

        Mert is at 92% fall.

Just go with Kosc from now, much better defender. Mert will feel the pressure from Verm when he is fully fit. I believe he is back in training?

Played my WC and just want Saturday to come so I cant change my squad again. Im pretty sure I will have had the best possible 15 for the next 6 fixtures at some point over the last 3 days but will most likely end up with the worst by Sat morning.

First season on FPL and I never hated Internationals so much and I was never a fan.

Playing this has definitely made watching MOTD

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster for a FPL season.

I need some help or suggestions, I normally boss my leagues from start to finish but have somehow managed to hit 3rd (few unlucky/bad choices ie benching migs vs manu and liverpool getting 3rd cleanie in a row)

Basically, WC or no? I normally WC much later and points when there are several DGW going on but I am unsure whether my team is so bad it really needs fixing now.

1 FT and 0.1m in the bank:

    Migs (Boruc)
    Lescott Coleman Fonte (Chester, Brayford)
    Coutinho Hazard Walcott Mirallas (Kim)
    Bony Soldado Sturridge

Coutinho failed. Hazard failed. Mirallas failed.

Is this is a midfield blip or have i got the wrong choices, it seems more likely that i at least need to remove coutinho. I would like benteke for bony, but its a funds issue there. Lescott needs to go at some point once citys main defence returns to full fitness. I don't need mirallas scoring as much with lukaku at Everton now too... I have no idea what to do.. Even had yaya toure in my team before the start of the season and changed him last minute FML Maybe Silva is a good option or is he rotational risk too?

Any suggestion, help would be good..

I would say you have a good team and only requires a little bit of tweaking. I would only WC if you intended on beefing up your defence and changing formation.

Those MFs failed for a lot of people - but not every MF is going to come off in 3 weeks.

Patience - unless you have a concrete reason to move someone like injury I'd leave it to just rebuilding with the FTs

Who do you think will get the most minutes from the United defense including cup and champions league? Also is Rafael back yet (The Sun Dream Team)

I would say Vidic and Evra are guaranteed to start every game when fit. I suspect Ferdinand may get rotated from time to time. Hard to say is Rafael will be guaranteed a start at RB but I suspect he will once fit again. Not sure when he is back from injury though.

I was reading an article that said you lose around 1 point for every 2 million you have on the bench. I personally wouldn't leave a 6 million pound player on the bench unless it was to negotiate injuries or tricky fixtures.

It's cover for players being rested (Lampard), temporary loss of form, rotation. Happy with the rest of the team, so tempted. Could save against having to do extra transfers in future gameweeks, and thus points.

Got the link to the article? Cheers Rab.

I would have no more than 18 mil on the bench in an ideal world. 4.5 mil per player

What do you guys think of my team?

    Mignolet | Boruc

    Walker | Vidic | Sakho | Koscielny | Turner

    Lamela | Lampard | Walcott | Redmond | Ward-Prowse

    Benteke | Giroud | Sturridge

Going to play 4-3-3 for a few weeks and see how it goes.

Any suggestions on who I should captain for GW4?
