The Watchlist Updated – The Midfield

Having rolled out our recommendations for The Defence over the next four-to-six Gameweeks yesterday, we turn our attentions to the midfield area. Chelsea’s Brazilian playmaker arrives on our radar, Arsenal’s in-form duo continue to look prosperous options and Liverpool’s fit-again former Inter player makes a significant climb in this week’s refresh:

We hold onto David Silva at the top of the rankings as we await for news on the calf complaint that forced him off in the midweek Champions League win over CSKA Moscow. With attacking returns in three of the last four, the City playmaker has been key to the form that has seen Manuel Pellegrini’s rack up the goals in recent matches and with a trip to Sunderland followed by back-to-back home games against Spurs and Swansea, the fixtures remain in his favour. Yaya Toure is waiting in the wings to replace his team-mate in the rankings if he fails to make it, while Samir Nasri, with a goal or assist in six of his 10 appearances, remains a real under the radar option.

Oscar takes the place of Eden Hazard as our Chelsea midfielder of choice. Jose Mourinho remained somewhat cryptic as to the Belgian’s chances of starting against West Brom this weekend, making Oscar the more secure option – with four goals to his name already, the Brazilian faces just one of the top 10 in the next six (WBA, whm, SOT, sun, sto, CPL) and with Fernando Torres likely to return in three weeks, the uncertainty surrounding the Blues’ lone forward berth elevates their midfielders in our thinking.

Arsenal pair Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey both retain their positions within the top five in spite of a trip to Old Trafford this Sunday. The Welshman has now scored or assisted in all but one of the seven league games since Ozil’s arrival from Real Madrid and continued his relentless pursuit of goals with a vital winner in Dortmund last night – with three home games in four to follow the United clash, they could be poised for plenty more points, though we’re keeping an eye on Theo Walcott’s injury recovery, with Arsene Wenger expecting him back soon after the international break.

A return from a shoulder injury brings Philippe Coutinho immediately back into the reckoning. The Brazilian was handed a 45-minute run-out at the Emirates last Sunday but is expected to be handed his first start since Gameweek 4 at home to Fulham this weekend – with a front two of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to feed, whether in a 3-4-1-2 or 4-4-2, Coutinho looks an enticing differential prospect and also has a trip to Hull and home games with Norwich and West Ham in the next five.

Stoke’s versatile new boy Marko Arnautovic climbs in this week’s refresh. The Austrian has been fielded up front and in “the hole” in recent matches but was moved to the left wing last weekend – at 5.5, he has notched twice in his last three in all competitions and has a trip to Swansea followed by three home games in four to help pick up the points.

A favourable run of fixtures keeps Ravel Morrison in the mix, though the West Ham budget midfielder is just one booking away from a single-match ban. Sam Allardyce’s side continue to struggle for goals but Morrison has scored two and assisted one of their last six – he has Norwich, Fulham and Palace in the next four.

A trip to Chelsea this weekend somewhat tempers our enthusiasm over Stephane Sessegnon, though the subsequent schedule hands West Brom three home games in four. With Morgan Amalfitano shifted to right-back last time out and Steve Clarke clearly uncertain over his preferred option for the lone forward role, the 6.6 priced Benin international looks the best route amongst the Baggies attacking options right now as he looks to kick on from last week’s assist at home to Palace.

With a goal or assist in four of the last six Gameweeks, Adam Lallana has the form but after this week’s home clash against Hull, the Southampton skipper has a tricky run of fixtures which could curtail his progress, Mauricio Pochettino’s side square up to Arsenal, Chelsea and City in the following four – certainly enough to deter any would-be suitors.

Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye has home games against Norwich and West Brom in the next three and, despite producing a goal or assist in four of the last six, has remained under the radar with a 3% ownership. Like Morrison, however, he’s a yellow card away from a one-match ban.

United youngster Adnan Januzaj has started three of the last four and looks good for another appearance in the XI after being rested from the midweek Champions League trip to Real Sociedad. He remains a real budget option at just 5.1, though with Arsenal, Spurs and Everton in the next four, David Moyes’ side have a tough task on their hands.

Further down, Robert Snodgrass will be hoping to recover from a head injury for Norwich’s home games against West Ham and Palace in the next three, while promoted pair Peter Whittingham and Robbie Brady are another couple of budget options to consider. Both have set-pieces and spot-kicks in their favour – Whittingham has Villa, Palace and a home game with West Brom in the next six, while Brady welcomes Palace and Stoke to the KC over the same period.

If I were you I'd do it this week for a hit and do Giroud to Suarez. But Lukaku's fixtures do get bad after this week so maybe your idea is better.

I got Oscar and am starting to regret it already.

If you have no Liverpool attacking coverage then you absolutely have to have Suarez. Downgrade Michu to Jumanji to fund it.

    Arsenal Analysis
Up to this point in the season Arsenal have been “lucky” in that their team largely has picked itself. They’ve had a run of injuries to their midfield such that picking the matchday XI was fairly simple for Monsieur Wenger. Whoever was fit was playing. A by-product of that was this group has gelled stupendously well and could be the key reason why they currently lead the EPL by 4 points. But they now have a problem… Sure, many will say it’s a problem that most other teams would love to have, but I’m not so sure about that. They have some top quality midfielders coming back from injury and are expectant first teamers but they can’t all play. Some of the midfield group are going to have miss out, either in the guise of rotation or that they have just been overtaken in the pecking order and could now be surplus to requirements.

To try and get a gauge on who out of the midfield group may get game time, we need to a take step back and get an idea of how Arsene gets his team to play. The simplest response to that is; 2 holding midfielders with a bank of 3 in front supporting the lone striker. They play an aesthetically pleasing fluid passing style that requires a lot of off the ball movement and high levels of skill. Simples? It’s never that simple.

The bog standard formation that Arsenal send out, as I said, contains 2 defensive midfielders. Where they differ from other similar set ups is that they aren’t always required to be the tough tackling type that some of the “lesser” teams utilise. With Arsenal’s ability to control games and push and press higher up the pitch these 2 players are required to be a little more technically proficient as they will be taking part in more attacking plays, as opposed to a West Brom or Stoke who need them to sit a little deeper and provide more defensive insurance. These 2 midfielders have vastly different roles however, and they do look much better if one of these is a defensive beast. Wenger’s Arsenal teams over the years have played their best when they’ve had a very good defensive mid who was happy to do the dirty work, players such as Viera, Petit and Gilberto Silva spring to mind. This season Flamini was brought back and slipped straight into this role but as he has been struck down with injury, Arteta has been an excellent deputy. They both bring quite different talents to this position however. Flamini has brought a solidarity to the midfield that was at times missing last season. He has excellent positional and tackling skills but is no mug when it comes to passing the ball around. The position doesn’t require a massive passing range as many of the passes played by this position are short to more attacking players, he’s basically the anchor that lets the other players do what they need to do. When Arteta fills in however, he brings much better skills on the ball but the offset being the defensive side of his game is not as strong. He is getting much better at this in recent times however and his game against Liverpool suggests he can push Flamini for this spot full-time, but they do feel a little safer with Flamini there. One other small note on Arteta, throughout his career in England he has always gravitated to the right side of the pitch during the games and most of his “passes received” occur on the right of centre channel. When he plays, the second defensive mid needs to occupy the left, or the system may not work as well. This has ramifications further up the field and where the areas the second mid can push up into.

The second of the defensive mids has a great deal more freedom and is more of a traditional box-to-box midfielder. When this position moves up into the attacking areas he will start to fill gaps that the higher 3 mids will naturally leave free. This is probably one of the harder positions to play as you need to be able to have a high technical capacity to attack whilst also having the positional sensitivity to drop back when the need arises, and perform there at a high level too. That’s why Ramsey’s season has been so fantastic and possibly even a little underrated! Yeah we all know about his amazing run of goals but his value to the team is just as high in how he fits into the structure and how tactically mature he is becoming. That said, he does have competition for this position… Arsenal have a bloke called Wilshere who is more than capable in filling this spot, you could suggest that his attacking play is better than Ramsey’s but his defensive side (in both tacking and positional play) needs a little work. He can often be a little rash in the tackle and his defensive positioning sometimes isn’t up to Ramsey’s standard. The other option Arsene has up his sleeve is to play both Flamini and Arteta in these two spots which I think he will do at times. This will mean Arteta pushing a little higher up in the right side as opposed to Ramsey on the left. He might do this on occasion when Walcott gets back to full fitness to help channel a little more creativity around these areas.

The attacking 3 midfielders are a little more difficult to define and have seen a major step forward from last season. Their fluidity and teamwork could be seen at times last season but the introduction of Ozil into the group has seen it reach new levels as he complements the team perfectly. If we take the probable best team it should have Cazorla on the left, Ozil in the middle and Walcott on the right. Ozil is the type of player that likes to drift out onto the wings quite often, mostly to the right when they have the ball. This suits Cazorla because his natural instinct is to tuck in and operate more centrally than a traditional left winger should. Ozil going wider right then pushes Walcott up the field into striker positions, lending on his pace and finishing abilities to score or help out Giroud. It’s then up to Ramsey to operate a pass behind them or make runs into the box between them. The way these 3 positions, along with the defensive mid pushing up, all interact with each other is vital to how Arsenal will fare this season. They have already shown in the EPL and Europe that this group has developed an outstanding understanding and if they can keep it up, will provide very good value for money in taking out the league.

Now obviously that’s a very basic analysis of a gameplan and there are a lot of variables involved such as how the opposition set up, the game situation, player form, etc, etc, etc but it’s a decent starting point. The benefit Arsenal have then are players outside of that starting 3 of attacking mids that are very comfortable in filling the exact same roles as the starting players do. With Wilshere they have a player who is as similarly inclined as Cazorla is to play on the left and drift in, Gnabry can do similar stuff Walcott does and Rosicky can fill any of the 3 positions comfortably.

    So that’s their starting midfield sorted out… Where do all the “fringe” players fit in? In no particular order;

Arteta. Like I said before, he’s going to be the back up for either the defensive midfield roles, but primarily the more defensive position. This bloke is quality with a capital Q and will regularly be rotated into the team, whether that’s at the expense of either Flamini or Ramsey will probably be down to player management and ensuring they all get through the long season.

Wilshere. He has a the benefit over a few of his competitors in his positional flexibility. He has the ability to take Ramsey’s position as the box-to-box midfielder but he is equally adept at filling in for Ozil in the centre or Cazorla on the left. This guy has as much natural talent as anyone but has been severely hamstrung by injuries over the past couple of seasons and is struggling to string games together. If he is able to get fit and firing, it will be very interesting to see where he gets into this team as he does provide a different style of play than most of the others. I would suggest he’d be a horses for courses player and provide opportunities for the others to have a week off. You’d have to suggest he’s dropped down the pecking order slightly, but Arsene is a big fan…

Rosicky. We could’ve been mistaken in thinking that he would fall off the edge in regards to his Arsenal career with the arrival of Ozil, but so far this season he has been invaluable in helping Arsenal through this patch of injuries. When he has played he’s provided exactly what they’ve asked of him and has the ability to fill any of the 3 attacking mid spots, or even drop deeper at a push. Where he fits into this team now that a lot of them are becoming available is a little uncertain. Others are probably ahead of him in the pecking order and he may struggle to get regular games.

Gnabry. Another youngster from the Arsenal production line. He has immense talent and Arsene has put faith in him by playing him whilst Walcott has been injured out on the right wing. He should continue to get game time, but probably from the bench and definitely in Cup games.

Chamberlain. Unfortunately the Ox is out for a long time so we can’t really consider him. For us that’s a good thing because he could cause a lot more selection nightmares.

Podolski. Coming back soon! Before he was injured, he carved out a nice little niche for himself on the left wing but I’d be a little surprised if he slots back into this spot when he comes back. With Arsenal’s lack of strikers he may well go back up front, where he made a name for himself early in his career, and provide back-up to Giroud

Not much, really. It mostly is just a list of players and positions they can play, a lot of words for no new or utterly trivial information.

...except for its basic content, which is a very very disputable and unjustified thesis that Arsenal has been better off with a squad diminished by injuries than now that they're getting all the players back. With the tight schedules of CL playing teams, especially Arsenal that plays in the toughest group, I'd say it is an obvious blessing to be able to rotate a little and have fresh players for matches.

Having options also gives you just that: options, also to your tactical set up. For example they can soon chose their defensive midfielder pairing from Arteta, Flamini, Wilshere and Ramsey, 4 very different players that give very different combinations. When they play the top clubs and need the maximum defence, it is Flamini + Arteta, or a little more attacking approach, Flamini + Ramsey. A carrier instead of playmaker, and it's Flamini + Wilshere. Fluid passing, Arteta + Ramsey. To break up a really defensive formation, a defensive playmaker + carrier, i.e. Arteta + Wilshere. Ramsey + Wilshere, well that combination should never be played again. These are also very tiring roles, so it is good that they can rotate it a bit. What better than having a fresh Wilshere on bench when Ramsey has ran box to box for 70 minutes?

Definitely good thing for Arsenal to get players back.

If you put sections of the text in google nothing is found. If there was an online article already written google can usually find it.

sorry I did not read everything.
to me it`s rotation with ramsey or wilshere to partner arteta or flamini for starts.
cazorla out wide left to drift inside and allow gibbs the freedom to come forward.
Walcott out wide right to stay out there and run onto passes from ozil and cazorla to feed giroud for tap ins.
sagna will stay deep to foul people and somehow get the same ref to not allow the advantage
      (vs sunderland)
      or a quick freekick(vs Liverpool)

not much of a problem, ramsey being rotated at 7.1,to keep over 9 assets like cazorla, walcott and ozil playing.

REPOST - Need more exposure if I am to become Poet Laureate 😯

My mini league is oh so tight
Amongst the hardcore there is furore
Anger even, at the casual with the foresight
      To have selected Yaya Toure.

From day one his team has been dead
He's young and foolish, just a nipper
Yet here he is with a 20 point lead
And with Aguero as his skipper.

I discect my team under a miscroscope
My chance of winning I don't fancy
But then I see a glimmer of hope
For he doesn't have Aaron Ramsey.

dropped michu for Pilkington,to then finally bring in ramsey for barkley next week.....it seems ozil passes to giroud who sets up a midfielder from deep,ramsey/wilshere,in the end no real points for ozil.
Walcott missed so many chances when he was fit,is it wise to downgrade ozil to Walcott when he returns?

in the end I think I will get Walcott and use the extra cash to upgrade my defense

Walcott - A fixture when he returns ?
There are plently of people commenting that they are planning to bring in Walcott once he is fit.
I understand the reasons for - however Arsenal are playing so well without him, I am begginng to think he could well be subject to rotation and loss of potential points. Maybe Ozil is going to be the only nailed-on mid if everone stays fit.

Took me -8 to get to this team:

        Ming
        Shaw Lovren Terry Vertonghen
        Ramsey Oscar Januzaj
        Rooney Aguero Suarez (C)

Bench: Lewis - Morrison Brady Collins.

Is the captaincy ok? I'm swapping between Suarez and Aguero. Hmmmm.

        Start Januzaj or Oscar?

I'm a bit torn as everyone is saying Oscar has been shit lately while Januzaj seems to be the stand out performer everytime he enters the pitch. Though if I don't start Oscar at home to WBA I might as well ship him out. Rest of midfield is Silva, Ozil and Ramsey

I'd say Silva is the best choice because he is very consistent.

Any Chelsea midfielder is a risk imo.
Also, Oscar will probably be benched for a game after the international break and Hazard is just too inconsistent.

Think I'm finally going to get Ramsey this week, his next four look great and it helps fund a premium defender now that Reid is injured. Unless Silva's fit, there's really no other midfielder that appeals right now.

I got suarez and aguero. 3rd is lukaku. Dont think hell be exactly the highest scoring but I bought him at 7.5 which was a bargain.. value wise fantastic. I dont think the other options are worth the extra 2(bemteke) or 2.5 mill (sturridge).. allows me to have silva coutinho oscar + ramsay comftorbly and still have a strong defence.

            ^^this^^

but with Gabby and Weimann injured, Benteke's appeal is lessened as he needs their pace to support him. Plus atm Rooney is undroppable, need to wait until he looks like hitting a lean spell.

i bought him before the carling cup match up last mid wk thankfully his head concussion didn't rule him out long term
