The Midweek Team News

Artur Boruc is out for a number of weeks with a broken hand for Southampton, whilst Kelvin Davis is also injured ahead of the visit of Villa. Philippe Coutinho is fit for Liverpool’s home game with Norwich, though Kolo Toure is doubtful with a hip problem. Bacary Sagna is likely to miss out for Arsenal. Angel Rangel is out for at least a fortnight for Swansea, who expect Michu back in training this week. Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew both talk rotation, whilst Tony Pulis looks to Cameron Jerome and Marouane Chamakh to grab the goals in his first home game in charge of Palace. Here’s a summary of the press conferences so far:

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino handed Fantasy managers an early-morning heads-up in his pre-9 a.m press conference. The Argentine confirmed Artur Boruc is out for “some weeks” with the broken hand sustained at Chelsea, whilst Saints second-choice stopper Kelvin Davis is also out of tomorro’s match with Villa, as is Morgan Schneiderlin, Danny Fox, Gaston Ramirez and Guly Do Prado, as the injuries start to build.

Arsene Wenger has revealed Bacary Sagna is expected to miss tomorrow’s match against Hull, with Carl Jenkinson set to deputise at right-back. Steve Bruce will check on the availability of Paul McShane, who has recently been sidelined due to a hamstring problem, whilst the Tigers boss admitted James Chester may be handed his first start since Gameweek 5 after finally recovering from a similar complaint and taking a place on the bench last week.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Philippe Coutinho “will be fine for Wednesday” after the Brazilian picked up an ankle problem prior to the weekend loss at Hull. Coutinho is poised to return to the Reds starting XI against the Canaries, though Kolo Toure is a doubt after picking up a hip problem towards the end of the 3-1 defeat at the KC Stadium.

Sam Allardyce has admitted he could be set to freshen up his starting XI ahead of this evening’s encounter at Palace:

“We have only a few niggles from Saturday’s game. We don’t consider they will cause us any difficulties in terms of the selection process, but having three games in a week, it may be about asking other squad players to step in and do a job on Tuesday or on Saturday.”

Alan Pardew has also hinted at rotation as Newcastle make their way to Swansea. The Magpies boss has tinkered less than most managers over the last few games, but conceded he may hand a few squad players a run out at the Liberty:

“A few have been knocking on my door this morning asking to play. Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse, Vurnon Anita and Jonas Gutierrez – they’re all desperate to play. We’ve got real competition for places. That bodes well. We’re going to need to freshen it up and change it.”

Both Roberto Martinez and Chris Hughton confirmed they have no new injury concerns ahead of trips to United and Liverpool respectively.

Tony Pulis has talked up the partnership of Marouane Chamakh and Cameron Jerome ahead of his first home match in charge of Palace. The former Stoke boss looks poised to retain the 4-4-2 rolled out at Norwich last week, as he went on to say:

“I really hope we can get him on board because he’s got really good quality. He linked up well with Cameron, and we have to make sure those two have a partnership and a relationship and that they play together as a pair.”

Michael Laudrup has received a significant boost after scans revealed Wilfried Bony will be sidelined for just 10 days with a hamstring injury. The Swansea summer signing was feared to be out for a number of weeks but will be back before the turn of the year – as will Angel Rangel, who misses up to three weeks with a calf injury. Reports in the local press also suggest Michu may be back in training this week, though tomorrow’s game with Newcastle will come too soon.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this evening’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Tuesday’s press conferences unfold in what is shaping up to be a busy day for Fantasy managers.

          Gerrard is far better option and that shows in his returns. And the fact that he has scored in both games against Norwich last season makes it even sweeter.

        I've just messed around with my team and with lukaku I could have gerrard, oscar, ramsey and walcott in midfield and still have 3 decent defenders. Obviously if I had the transfers that is, but just show the flexibilty not having the big 3 up front gives you. Still it's getting really hard to ignore rooney.

          I know right! I think it only prudent to give yourself a way of getting Rooney in soon if Lukaku doesn't get enough returns. I could have traded Boruc > expensive GK but I went for Marshall instead to give me the Rooney option later.

      I think probably lukaku, he probly wont score that many less than roooney and rooney is a really streaky player, when RVP comes back in, he'll play deeper and may not produce as much. Lukaku is evertons finisher from gw 16-26 only liverpool and spurs would be hard games for him.

      As for Ozil -> walcott, im in the same boat and cant help you. Would think that in time, Wally will score as well or better than ozil but wait until he's up to speed. Look at this week where ozil got 11 and walcott got 4 (although 4 points for 1 minutes play is pretty good going)

    How would you rate a backline consisting of;
    Terry-Dawson-Evans (Azpi/Nasty + Clyne)

    The rationale being they are cheap (Evans and Nasty/Azpi), but they play more often than not. I basically have three players for spot number 3 in defence.

    Alternatively I get Zabaleta or a another big hitter instead.

      If you had Terry/Dawson/Evans/Nasty you could just fill the last slot with a 4 mill defender because you realistically would always play 3 of the big 4 almost every week. Wish my back 5 looked like that.

        Hey, mate, give me your opinion. My defence:

        Migs-Boruc
        Coleman-Terry-Chico-Walker-Baker

        I have 2 FT, 0.3 in bank. I can live with this, but with 2 FT I can either ship out dead wood for long term or do one round move. So, either:

        A) Coleman -> Kosc
        B) Baker -> Palace defender
        C) Both

        or:

        D) Baker -> Jenks and have 2 FT next week to ship Jenks out if Sagna is back.

        What do you think? Better ideas?

          Definitely don't do one-round moves on defenders, look longer term. Arsenal defence has been on fire but three hard fixtures after this gameweek. Everton have two nasty fixtures and then a long period of great ones so don't lose Coleman now.

          I'm looking at Evans. United have some great fixtures soon and will inevitably tighten up as they start to gel.

          I would say do Baker > Ward today and plan on Chico > Evans next week but see how things progress.

            I don't trust in ManU anymore. I don't think anything will make them good. If I would have a ManU player, it would be either Rooney or Evra, but both are expensive relative to options.

            Chico has Hull at home next week, definitely keeping him until GW 16.

            Baker -> Ward is what I am holding on now. Still thinking about it. Arsenal has only conceded 1 in last 6 and we saw it last spring that this really is a top notch defence. I would love to have one from there. Of course, Jenkinson would be only one round option, and they'll probably concede when he plays anyway.

              You could be right about United but I remember the same pattern last year. I think it was round Christmas that they suddenly tightened up and after the Jan WC they went on an extraordinary run of about 7 clean sheets in 10 games (actual facts may differ).

              It is such a pain when players suddenly stop getting starts. Ward should be tidy though.

                But it's different United now, with Moyes, not Ferguson. I won't go for United before I see them enchaining good games. Ward is on the list now though.

        Excuse my ignorance but how do you get such high value teams? I assume you have to transfer in the best scoring players in the early gameweeks and keep them? I'm doing fairly well, about 100 points from the top but my team value is only 101.9 - much lower than most people around me.

        thanks

          Take a couple of 8 point hits in the first few weeks and make transfers straight away. If someone has potential long term and they are going up 0.3m in the gameweek then welcome them into your team on the Sunday. Do this for the first seven/eight weeks and then wildcard to the team you actually want. That's how it went for me anyway.

            Thanks man, does it not hurt you early on taking the 8 point hits or do you generally get the points back on the basis that you're getting the form players? Cheers for the reply.

              IMO team value goes from being massively important at the beginning of the season to not important in the slightest by the gwk 38. In the first few weeks there are more active teams and if someone scores a couple of goals everyone wants to get them in. If you think they are a good player then why not get them early and make 0.3m out of them. I'm not saying jump on every bandwagon, I never owned Barkley or Yaya this season but Giroud, Sturridge, Fonte, Ramsey have increased my value by quite a lot, as have Aguero and Suarez recently. Never have dead wood in your team either, your subs should also be increasing in value in the first 8 weeks. If you have a transfer value of £106 million in the Jan wildcard then the team you can get is amazing!

          The reason is just this. People often go for the team value in early season. You apparently have decided to make points instead. I bet none of us is positioned anywhere near you on table.

          I had similar reasoning last season and lead my minileague by far in winter. Then, come January, I crashed down. I don't blame that only on team value, though, but it played part in my fall.

          Now I'm taking a middle ground, I don't particularly aim at rising the value at expense of points, but don't shy dumping players when their price starts to drop or jumping ships early on if they look good, because last time that backfired in form of less money to spend at Spring when most strong players were ridiculously expensive. Of course, if you already have them from early on, everything is fine.

    Anyone worth bringing in for Oscar (has to be 9.0 or under - already have triple LIV though) or worth bringing in for Barkley (has to be 5.2 or under)?

    Got 2FTs and may as well use one of them, nothing else pressing to do.

    Okay, am I mad to do Baker -> Jenkinson? No hit involved, but would it be basically just wasting a transfer for one game?

    I have 2 FT, so if I only use one, I still have 2FT next round and can ship Jenks out if I wish.

    Ward, Coleman, Mert (Vlaar, Chester)
    Ozil, Oscar, Ramsey(v), RMorrison (Amalfitano)
    Suarez(c), Aguero, Rooney

    Look set? Unsure whether to play Coleman or Vlaar thinking Coleman just because of possible attacking returns, can't see either keeping a clean sheet tomorrow.
