Scout Mission – Gameweek 16

There may be a few days until the deadline but, as always, we’re already casting an eye over the upcoming set of fixtures. Here’s the scenarios and line-ups on our radar for Gameweek 16:

Silva’s game time
Back with a goal in Tuesday evening’s Champions League win over Bayern Munich, the Spaniard is already being cautiously considered by Fantasy managers. Silva has picked up a couple of injuries this term but, like many of City’s main attackers, has looked reinvigorated under Manuel Pellegrini’s guidance – with three goals and a trio of assists in just seven league appearances, he’s averaged six points per game so far. A start and a fine performance against league leaders Arsenal this upcoming Saturday could well persuade those on the lookout for a differential – Silva’s 3% ownership looks hugely tempting.

Michu’s goal threat
The Swansea man is another premium-priced option to return from injury earlier in the week. Though, handed the full 90 minutes up front in Monday’s home game against Hull, Michu failed to produce the goods, as Michael Laudrup’s side stuttered to a 1-1 draw – he’s blanked in his last six appearances now and is down to 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The Swans boss conceded his star man had struggled with injuries for a number of weeks prior to being sidelined and, if he can step up his match sharpness and impress away to Norwich this weekend, Michu may well present us with another alternative for a midfield shake-up.

Deulofeu’s impact on Mirallas’ minutes
Climbing off the bench late on in Sunday’s match at the Emirates, the youngster’s superb equaliser denied the hosts victory and ensured Everton received a well-deserved point. Having served up a goal and assist in his first start for the Toffees in Gameweek 13, Deulofeu has been tentatively used from the bench in each of the subsequent two trips to United and Arsenal, but a run of four home games in the next six looks ideal for Roberto Martinez to hand him further first-team opportunities. Kevin Mirallas’ owners would have been eyeing up this run of games as a potential source of points but will now be a little uneasy in light of Deulofeu’s recent showings – despite his classification as a forward, a price of 5.4 and two goals and an assist in his last 124 minutes suggest the Barcelona loanee may even be worth a real punt if Martinez affords him an extended run in the side.

Liverpool’s response without Gerrard
Liverpool have yet to officially confirm it but it seems all but certain their skipper will be ruled out for the festive period with a hamstring injury. Having limped off against West Ham on Saturday, Gerrard’s absence will be a major blow to Brendan Rodgers’ side – he had scored or assisted in nine of the last 10 league games in an incredible run of consistency. Luis Suarez owners will be looking for the silver lining here – the Uruguayan could well be on spot-kicks in his skipper’s absence but, with a trip to Spurs this weekend and visits to City and Chelsea in the next four, the Uruguayan’s threat may well be diminished without Gerrard pulling the strings in the centre.

Rooney and van Persie in tandem at Villa
With Suarez and Sergio Aguero proving mainstays in many a frontline, and the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Loic Remy offering mid-price options with form and favourable fixtures to follow, faith in United is low at a time when the schedule smiles kindly. Despite their side’s stuttering displays, the United front two have impressed in recent matches – Rooney has four sets of double figures in his last six, whilst the Dutchman has scored in all but one of his previous five appearances in the league. Free from suspension and injury and sitting in just 13% and 18% of FPL sides respectively, their ownership levels are relatively low enough to shake up the rankings if they can plunder the goals at Villa and boost their side’s ailing title bid.

Palace’s resilience at the Bridge
The Eagles’ trip to Chelsea this weekend is Tony Pulis’ first real test since taking the reins last month. Palace have conceded just once in the three games under their new manager but Jose Mourinho’s side have been particularly lethal in front of their own fans and have scored at least twice in every home game so far – if Palace can frustrate and limit the Blues on Saturday, faith in their budget backline options is likely to see further investment – aside from Danny Gabbidon, their defensive regulars are all owned by 2% of Fantasy managers or less.

Ozil’s Form on the Road
The Arsenal playmaker has been outstanding at the Emirates but has so far struggled to replicate that form on his travels. Ozil has produced just three assists in six away appearances – blanking against Swansea, West Brom, Palace and United so far. Certainly, his previous away appearance (an 11 point haul at Cardiff) bodes well but, with the Gunners facing a City side that have conceded twice at home all season, he faces a tough task to produce.

Brady’s Role at Home to Stoke
The Tigers playmaker is on borrowed time now after warming the bench for the full 90 minutes of Monday’s draw at Swansea. Three sets of double figures in the first six highlighted Brady’s top-flight capabilities but, since picking up a hernia problem, he’s never been quite the same and, looking short of confidence, was taken out the firing line at the Liberty as Steve Bruce opted for Maynor Figueroa on the left of a 3-5-2 instead. At present, Brady still sits in over 8% of Fantasy teams but if his manager doesn’t turn to his talents against the Potters, the exodus will surely pick up pace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Paid 8.7 for Yaya now worth 9.6 so i can sell him for 9.1
      Silva currently 9.1

Should i swap yaya for the more attacking Silva?

CPL defenders have been involved in more duels than any other defence over the past four GW's ...they have also lost more duels than any other team, both on the floor and in the air, during the same period...They have conceded fewer goals than any other team during those same four weeks with just a single goal (=Arsenal)...Great stats and a busy defence that demonstrate that the CPL defence are organised and covering each other well....

Yeah, for their home games I'll definitely be playing Speroni. Even though they weren't keeping cleanies, I've been impressed with them all season defensively when I've watched them.. Against Tottenham 1st game of the season, against us among others.

thx all. gonna wait to do next gw for FT remy > rooney.

so many transfers i want to do but getting to a pt the -4 hit seem to start adding up. my team in the 100k position, and if i rack up -4 hits seems wont break the 10k postion.

u all in favor of only ft or how often to do -4 hits..? thx

want to do somehwere along the lines within the next 4 gw:

That doesn't make sense though. Just because you are playing 2, it doesn't make it any more or less likely that they will keep a clean sheet.

          I wouldn't bench a defender who costs 5.2

Whilst there is that age-old saying, never use your FT on a goalkeeper.

I'm not sure I'll be able to hold out until the January wildcard with Mignolet.

Only one of the four fixtures looks OK... and even then Cardiff have been known to spring a few surprises this season.

What are you doing fellow Migsy owners?

we talk about hits as if its on one player, but in order to take a hit you have to swap 2 players.....your team point total doesnt know any different......so why do we talk about hits for defenders?
if i brought in lukaku and howard for -4 surely the hit could equally be considered on either or spread between both......
    just a thought

      It's simple.

(Predicted pointes after transfers - any hits incurred) - Predicted points total before transfers = x

If x is likely to be equal to or higher than 1, go for it. If not, don't.

exactly so its spread on both, you cant simply isolate the defender in the example i gave

Often transfers aren't dependant on eachother though, for example, if you could have afforded Lukaku without getting Howard in.

In this case, you should work out which transfer is the most likely to increase returns and do it.

Then the second transfer is simple as I mentioned above. (Predicted pointes after transfers - any hits incurred) - Predicted points total before transfers = x

that said, the long term impact of making that transfer isn't factored in.

If you make changes regularly, averaging one or more per week, these hits can benefit/hinder you in every week following the hit.

This is why i think hits are good if considered part of a long term strategy and increasingly risky if they are made for one week gains (where the formula is bang on)

Obviously the perioud in which you judge the points difference varies. Right now, it's probably around 6 GWs since the winter WC is 6 weeks away.

Penalties – worth it or not?

Looking back over the last 10 seasons data it seems that the average (and it should be noted that the average doesn’t vary wildly, so the average in this instance is actually quite representative) number of penalties for most teams is about 5 or 6 per year. (a few teams seem to average a bit more – notably Chelsea). As of 2012 the average conversion rate for the last 11 seasons was 77% - approx 3/4.

This is not meant to be in depth analysis. But taking Brady as an example, he has already scored 2 from 2 pens. If this was an average season we could realistically expect him take another 3 or 4 pens and convert 2 or 3 of them perhaps. Given Hulls propensity for keeping games reasonably tight theres a decent chance he’ll walk away with 2 or 3 bonus in those games, giving him a score of 11 or 12 perhaps. Not bad. However, he does seem slightly destined to rely on penalties as Hull don’t really seem to create or score much.

Certainly, if I was in the market for a rotating or 5th mid I would rather have someone who gets more regular scores of 5/6 etc, as that would probably give me a higher chance of actually getting something other than a 2 off the bench. I would think someone like Redmond would probably be a better bet overall.

As I said this isn’t really meant to be conclusive, more food for thought. My personal preference looking at the stats is that being on penalties is a useful addition that *might* sway me in one players direction over another, particularly when considering a player who you always play (great if you can find a regularly playing Lamps in a team geared up for generating penalties!).

For the most part though I think it is something to be wary of placing too much emphasis on - not least because it carries a penalty(!) for missing them.

Yep, I agree that too much weight is given at times by some. This might even be the Lamps/Gerrard effect. For many years these 2 gained a sizable portion of their big annual hauls from pens.
