Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Samba

To the cynical viewer, the glut of yellow cards this weekend will have had Christmas shopping and midweek cup tie written all over them, in ten-foot-high neon lettering, while the solitary red card smacks a little of both.

The weekend’s sending off, in the second half of Spurs’ Sunday humiliation at home to Liverpool, looked harsh from my already uncomfortable seat in the White Hart Lane stands. A high boot from Paulinho, connecting with Luis Suárez’s chest in an effort to reclaim a bouncing ball in midfield, incurred the wrath of referee Jonathan Moss, who was well within his rights to brandish red. The Brazilian is set to serve a three-match ban and will miss the Capital One Cup tie against West Ham in midweek, in addition to Gameweek 17 and 18 showdowns with Southampton and West Brom.

Also missing midweek cup action through suspension will be Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Spurs captain Michael Dawson. Their timely fifth yellow cards will now clear both to play through the busy Christmas league schedule without the threat of missing action. Is it too much to ask that their form will improve with the monkeys off their backs? Fans of their clubs and Fantasy managers alike will certainly hope so.

If that wasn’t enough, two more players also moved their quota of yellows past the ban threshold in Sunday action, as both Gabby Agbonlahor and Angel Rangel slipped from the tightrope. The duo picked up cautions against Manchester United and Norwich respectively and, having been knocked out of the Capital One Cup, they will serve these bans in Gameweek 17 instead – Villa, without a goal in their last two games, travel to Stoke, while Swansea face a rampant Everton.

Playing the long game in the build-up to the busy Christmas schedule, and maybe planning some time with the family through an enforced rest, there are no fewer than eight new faces donning their plimsolls and digging out their balancing sticks for Gameweek 17.

The Saturday fixtures saw fourth yellow cards for Michael Essien (in just his fourth domestic start of the season) and for Marouane Chamakh at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile at St James’ Park, bookings for Cheick Tioté and Morgan Schneiderlin meant they also clambered onto the Tightrope. Phillippe Senderos and the fit-again David Silva complete the Saturday sextet, with the latter’s caution perhaps sounding a note of caution to those looking to cover Sergio Agüero’s injury with the scheming Spaniard.

Sunday filled the final two places from the weekend, with José Cañas and Kyle Walker threatening to enforce additional rotation upon their managers as they await the draw for the next round of the squad-sapping Europa League.

Finally to close out the suspension shake-up, we have a number of players returning to the fold having served out their sequestration last weekend. Fabian Delph, Chico Flores, James McCarthy, Yohan Cabaye and Jonathan Walters are all now ready to take their places once again this week.

Amalfitano could be soon. Poor form, new manager, Sinclair/Berahino pushing for starts.

Brady seems to be right now but could win his place back eventually given how much Bruce was talking him up before his Hernia

I would do the Aguero -> Rooney first if he's the replacement you want and then hold out on the rest until the price changes force your hand (just monitor and check it every day shortly before the change goes through)..

      that's what I'm doing..

I've done Aguero -> Negredo for free and am considering Terry + Januzaj -> 5.3m or less def + Walcott for -8

Why not Chris? Owning Pablo has been kind of a nightmare. As for Silva, his stats are way too good. 2.1 SPG, and 3.8 Key passes per game. Just blanked twice in 8 starts this season.

Yes on both. Lukaku is owned by many but that's not really relevant, it's hard to bet against him with those fixtures and stats. Shouldn't be as tricky a decision as people are making it imo, OK Negredo is class, but things could change with his strike buddy gone.

I think Pablo will continue to frustrate as he generally has. After Aguero was injured City continued with Negredo as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1ish system with Silva in the hole. May perhaps signal their future intentions.

Pablo's been frustrating to watch too. I agree. And it means I could have a pretty decent midfield of Ramsey, Hazard and Silva. Also, the strikeforce would be Rooney, Lukaku and Suarez. I like the setup of the team. Not sure if Pablo to Silva's worth a hit though.

Agreed. Lukaku has excellent fixtures and is nailed on (one critical factor)

He hasn't been scoring or looked like scoring lately but remember 2 of last 3 games have been v united and arsenal away. Lucky assists yes but with the fixtures to come I can't see him being kept quiet.

City have 3 games in the space of 5 days. They have a bigger squad and more chance of rotation. Negredo won't start every single game during this period that is almost certain. Most likely to miss the palace at home game which is the most appealing of the lot.

Also you don't know how pellegrini will play, doubt he will go with 2 big strikers up front as that rarely works. Look for 1 striker, so it's between him and dzeko and possibly a fit again jovetic

I don't think I doubt Negredo's game time, especially with Aguero out now. He never looks tired. Also, I don't think Dzeko's lacking match fitness, so it would be a task to start him right away.

Lukaku, well, he's a beast, and we know, he has the ability to score a lot of goals in a single match. Everton's form is terrific, so are the fixtures. Hard to look past him.

One important point. Expect a fair bit of rotation in the city squad over christmas.

Aguero's injury will be a concern to Pellegrini and he won't want other key members of the squad getting injured by playing too many games. So he will almost definately rotate and use his squad. The aguero injury has made that even more certain.

Likes of silva, kompany, clichy, negredo, possibly even nasri and yaya are not 100% safe although yaya most likely in my opinion to start every game.

Agree with that, reckon this makes Yaya one of the best options to own right now. Shame I had to choose between Walcott and Yaya, if I could have both I would.

I don't think anyone is particularly safe. The likes of kompany and silva for me will almost certainly miss 1 game over the heavy christmas period due to them returning back from injuries.

Going down the list, the likes of clichy, negredo, nasri and even yaya are not 100% safe although yaya most likely in my opinion to start every game.

I am not saying he will rest them all in one game but the most likely game to see rotation will be palace at home. After that we may see some roation in striker/midfield positions for swansea.

You do have a valid point, though I can't imagine Pellegrini not playing Silva, especially when Aguero's out. Quite a lot of goals have been flowing through Aguero, and Silva when he plays, take those 2 out and I don't think City would be able to score anywhere near than what they are presently.

yes you have a very good point with silva being the key here. Maybe we can expect shortened minutes. He has been taking him off early every game, I don't know if he is ready for 3 games in such a short period though. Could well be but the way he has been taken out early shows there might be a risk of him starting all 3 games

Its anyone's guess on Silva. Especially after Milner's performance against Bayern Munich last week. I can see Silva getting about 200 minutes in the next 3 games. Have no idea how they will be distributed per game though. Could be 70,60,70, or something like 80,90,30..

Had him for DGW, then sold, got him back for Hull, then sold, then got him back last week. I've owned Silva then he got injured.. lather, rinse repeat. Bought Walcott at the start, sold when he got injured, brought him back, sold him after a 1 point cameo, now planning again.

its a bit convenient that suarez is against cardiff the game before everyone celebrates xmas - with 2 tough games after that. I'm hoping many casuals get caught out by the 26/29th games and he blanks!

But the way things are going he will probably get 3G 2A vs City, while Yaya scores a boxing day hattrick (including 2 penalties)
