Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Samba

To the cynical viewer, the glut of yellow cards this weekend will have had Christmas shopping and midweek cup tie written all over them, in ten-foot-high neon lettering, while the solitary red card smacks a little of both.

The weekend’s sending off, in the second half of Spurs’ Sunday humiliation at home to Liverpool, looked harsh from my already uncomfortable seat in the White Hart Lane stands. A high boot from Paulinho, connecting with Luis Suárez’s chest in an effort to reclaim a bouncing ball in midfield, incurred the wrath of referee Jonathan Moss, who was well within his rights to brandish red. The Brazilian is set to serve a three-match ban and will miss the Capital One Cup tie against West Ham in midweek, in addition to Gameweek 17 and 18 showdowns with Southampton and West Brom.

Also missing midweek cup action through suspension will be Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Spurs captain Michael Dawson. Their timely fifth yellow cards will now clear both to play through the busy Christmas league schedule without the threat of missing action. Is it too much to ask that their form will improve with the monkeys off their backs? Fans of their clubs and Fantasy managers alike will certainly hope so.

If that wasn’t enough, two more players also moved their quota of yellows past the ban threshold in Sunday action, as both Gabby Agbonlahor and Angel Rangel slipped from the tightrope. The duo picked up cautions against Manchester United and Norwich respectively and, having been knocked out of the Capital One Cup, they will serve these bans in Gameweek 17 instead – Villa, without a goal in their last two games, travel to Stoke, while Swansea face a rampant Everton.

Playing the long game in the build-up to the busy Christmas schedule, and maybe planning some time with the family through an enforced rest, there are no fewer than eight new faces donning their plimsolls and digging out their balancing sticks for Gameweek 17.

The Saturday fixtures saw fourth yellow cards for Michael Essien (in just his fourth domestic start of the season) and for Marouane Chamakh at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile at St James’ Park, bookings for Cheick Tioté and Morgan Schneiderlin meant they also clambered onto the Tightrope. Phillippe Senderos and the fit-again David Silva complete the Saturday sextet, with the latter’s caution perhaps sounding a note of caution to those looking to cover Sergio Agüero’s injury with the scheming Spaniard.

Sunday filled the final two places from the weekend, with José Cañas and Kyle Walker threatening to enforce additional rotation upon their managers as they await the draw for the next round of the squad-sapping Europa League.

Finally to close out the suspension shake-up, we have a number of players returning to the fold having served out their sequestration last weekend. Fabian Delph, Chico Flores, James McCarthy, Yohan Cabaye and Jonathan Walters are all now ready to take their places once again this week.

    @Sarj

    Just read you post

I tried to big up Hooper on here, but of course, because it was me, and it was something a bit different I got laughed out of here.

But he has 4 in his last 6, is on pens and Norwich's fixtures ain't bad. He could be a nice punt.

I've picked Rooney, mainly as watching United yesterday and wanting him to do badly was torture given how crucial he is to us.

The problem is its Norwich. When have they ever showed signs of being anything but a defencive and budget midfielder team? Doesnt matter how good hooper is, it has to end at some point. That said we said the same about Villa before Benteke

haha! thats the exact same reason why I bought Rooney. My ML leader captained him and I didn't even have Rooney. So it was absolute torture watching that game as a United fan!

I think Hooper is a decent differential. He was worth a look but when downgrading Aguero and you have all that cash to splash most people want another big hitter which Hooper is not. He and Norwich are not explosive. But I agree if I was sort of cash and needed a mid range forward he and Jrod would be my picks.

Have got two free transfers this week, due to sleeping through and missing the deadline at the weekend. They'll come quite in handy, as it happens!

Thinking about spending 4 points on top of that in order to do the following...

Aguero, Sessegnon, Koscielny -> Rooney, Walcott, Evans.

Pretty template to be sure, but that's fine. My only question mark is whether there's a better way to spend 5m or less on a Koscielny replacement...?

Looks alright, eh? So jammy this weekend: planned move was Johnson to Distin, so I actually did 4 points better AND had a free transfer as a result of missing the deadline.

And even more crucially, I didn't have the opportunity to tinker with my captaincy choice.

wish i slept through the deadline, i'd have had suarez captain!

i like it. there are certainly several other ways to spend 5mil or less but a man utd option for that price (especially with centre backs suiting the baps this season) is not to be sniffed at, regardless of their struggles

Maybe someone like Debuchy or Santon to replace Koscielny, though Evans could be a good shout too. Evans can always end up right back on the bench, though. He gets rotated just when you think he's nailed on. Could be a good move, however, as he brings goalscoring threat when he does play.

i'd agree with this, not 100% nailed is a risk you'd have to take. one of the saving graces of this is he's a 90 or 0 man so at least you'd get a sub in. i do wonder what jones having a good game at CB could do too, as worst case scenario it could mean an extra man fighting for one of the 2 centre back spots with evans

I've been stung by him before, this is why I'm wary... One of the Newcastle guys isn't a bad shout actually, although I'm trying to go more CB-heavy, due to the BAPS.

I think Man city will change to a 4-2-3-1 with Negredo or Dzeko up top. When Aguero got injury he brought on Navas instead of Dzeko.

I doubt Dzeko will start more then 1-2 games until Jan, and I think even that I'm being a bit generous.

My lack of hits has cost me dear, my head ruling my gut has cost me dearer (e.g. not getting rid of Studge when Suarez came back as Studge was doing fine). In-balance even more so, I should never have gone Rooney-Suarez-Aguero, it really weakened my midfield, I'm a little lucky as my tv was almost 107m. But lesson learned, I hope.

Fully expecting Aguero to be 12m when he's back 200k teenagers out for minus 1, then transfers will skew after next weekend when he's only left in dead teams. He'll not be easy to fit in.

by the time he is back we will be in a wc window. If you're not in desperate need might be worth hanging on to that a bit later, then you can do whatever is needed to get him in.

      Team for the weekend (-8)

      Howard
      Jagielka,Terry,Evans
      Hazard,Oscar,Silva,Ramsey
      Suarez,Lukaku,Negredo

      4m,Ravel,Burner,Faye

      0.9m in the bank.

Would you take another hit to do Oscar>Walcott or wait till next week? Oscar has been not getting enough minutes for my liking.

I would save Oscar. Would probably rather have him against Arsenal than Walcott against Chelsea, though either option has its promise really. Just not sure it's worth a 4 point hit when the guy you have has the same probability in all likelihood of getting points in the fixture.

Always here at the sound of a Kolarov.

JK, hes actually doing really well this season. Tonnes of assists recently and topping the defender goal attempts table with fewer games than many. Pellegrini is great for him.

Depends what your other 4 are. Its almost january so if they're fit and healthy there is no reason not to.

If like me you have Vlaar and Vertonghen it is unwise to carry Kolarov, but that wont stop me.
