Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Samba

To the cynical viewer, the glut of yellow cards this weekend will have had Christmas shopping and midweek cup tie written all over them, in ten-foot-high neon lettering, while the solitary red card smacks a little of both.

The weekend’s sending off, in the second half of Spurs’ Sunday humiliation at home to Liverpool, looked harsh from my already uncomfortable seat in the White Hart Lane stands. A high boot from Paulinho, connecting with Luis Suárez’s chest in an effort to reclaim a bouncing ball in midfield, incurred the wrath of referee Jonathan Moss, who was well within his rights to brandish red. The Brazilian is set to serve a three-match ban and will miss the Capital One Cup tie against West Ham in midweek, in addition to Gameweek 17 and 18 showdowns with Southampton and West Brom.

Also missing midweek cup action through suspension will be Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Spurs captain Michael Dawson. Their timely fifth yellow cards will now clear both to play through the busy Christmas league schedule without the threat of missing action. Is it too much to ask that their form will improve with the monkeys off their backs? Fans of their clubs and Fantasy managers alike will certainly hope so.

If that wasn’t enough, two more players also moved their quota of yellows past the ban threshold in Sunday action, as both Gabby Agbonlahor and Angel Rangel slipped from the tightrope. The duo picked up cautions against Manchester United and Norwich respectively and, having been knocked out of the Capital One Cup, they will serve these bans in Gameweek 17 instead – Villa, without a goal in their last two games, travel to Stoke, while Swansea face a rampant Everton.

Playing the long game in the build-up to the busy Christmas schedule, and maybe planning some time with the family through an enforced rest, there are no fewer than eight new faces donning their plimsolls and digging out their balancing sticks for Gameweek 17.

The Saturday fixtures saw fourth yellow cards for Michael Essien (in just his fourth domestic start of the season) and for Marouane Chamakh at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile at St James’ Park, bookings for Cheick Tioté and Morgan Schneiderlin meant they also clambered onto the Tightrope. Phillippe Senderos and the fit-again David Silva complete the Saturday sextet, with the latter’s caution perhaps sounding a note of caution to those looking to cover Sergio Agüero’s injury with the scheming Spaniard.

Sunday filled the final two places from the weekend, with José Cañas and Kyle Walker threatening to enforce additional rotation upon their managers as they await the draw for the next round of the squad-sapping Europa League.

Finally to close out the suspension shake-up, we have a number of players returning to the fold having served out their sequestration last weekend. Fabian Delph, Chico Flores, James McCarthy, Yohan Cabaye and Jonathan Walters are all now ready to take their places once again this week.

      Rouge choice, but Suarez could be a choice? City conceded 3 to Arsenal, and I would argue Suarez has the ability to score against anyone. Not that we (Liverpool) will win, but we could at least attempt to go down kicking and screaming!

    Mixed opinions last time I asked so let me ask again.

    Should I take a hit to sell Paulinho for Walcott/Silva this week or bench Paulinho and start Ravel at OT?
    I have Nasri and Ramsey as City and Arsenal attacking cover.

    Has anybody actually compared Silva's and Yaya Toure's stats?

    David Silva has better stats than Yaya Toure in each of the following;

    Minutes per goal.
    Minutes per chance created.
    Minutes per pass received.
    Minutes per touch.

    Walcott or Silva then?

    I'll present a case for each.

    Walcott - 2 shots per game, 1.4 Key passes. (9 appearances)

    Silva - 2.1 shots per game, 3.8 key passes. (8 appearances)

    Though, Walcott only started 5 of the 9 games he has played in the PL this season, and Silva has stated each game when he's been fit.

    Also, I have Ramsey too.

    Thougts?

    I am loving the Hooper interest here. I hope he doesn't turn out to be Mirallas or an early season Hazard and fail for all those on this website (myself included!)

    He seems to have some form, how good was he for Celtic though? Is this just a blip, or are these rumours of an excellent finisher true?

      I posted this along with other players for Aguero replacements earlier today.

      Former Celtic striker Gary Hooper has flown completely under the radar, and I'm very surprised his name hasn't been mentioned more across the community. The Norwich front man has scored 4 goals in the past 6 matches for the Canaries, after only playing 22 minutes in one of those matches. Since Hooper found his goal scoring feet in gameweek 11, only Aguero and Suarez have a better 'minutes per goal,' out of any player who has played at least 360 minutes across the 6 gameweeks. If his form was to continue, then the downgrade to the £6.1m player would result in a lot of freed up funds to invest else where in your team.

        I read that, which comforted me in my choice. But season long wise, how was he? Gouffran, Chamakh and Remy have had these little streaks of form, but may not continue doing it.

        I guess what I am curious obvious is if Hooper is a consistent player, rather then prone to dips in form.

          He seems to be. He hasn't played that many games due to an injury at the beginning of the season.

          But your not exactly relying on Hooper to score bucket loads each week, the main source of points will come from your midfield players, as you'll have a lot of freed up funds to reinvest there.

            True, the Aguero injury, whilst unfortunate, has meant I now have Hooper up front with a decent 4 man midfield of Hazard, Ramsey, Coutinho and Walcott, with money in the bak to upgrade to Silva latèr.

        That is some impressive reading. Even dividing by 2 we are still looking at a player who can bag double figures for goals and a few assists.

        Interestingly, he hasn't done too badly in the Champions League, hopefully given him some taste of better teams, and some valuable experience.

        Yeah after watching his last two games he seems pretty nailed on and is looking very dangerous. Great cheap mid for now!

        yeah I figured Amalfitano out was more important than Barkley out right now. Don't mind having Barkley as a bench player for now he looks like he has goals in him!

    Help out lads! Keep me away from a brain fade! 2 FT's

    A) Aguero + Sess => Roo + Mirallas/Cabaye
    B) Aguero + Sess => Neg + Wally
    C) Aguero + Sess => Neg + Silva
    D) Aguero + Sess + Zaba for -4 => Aguero + Silva + any defender under 4.9(preferably Williamson) would allow me to do Ramsey to Wally next week

    Hows the team looking... -8 done --> Aguero, Ravel, Terry to Negredo, Silva, Evans

    Howard (4.0)
    Jagielka - Evans - Glen Johnson (Dawson, Chester)

    Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Ramsey (Januzaj)

    Suarez - Negredo - Lukaku

    What's the total number of Yaya penalties that you would be able to tolerate over the xmas period, before getting upset? I'd say 1.

      It would take an awful lot, considering I own him. Loved that one over the weekend. Last kick of the game, and thank you for my 5 points.

          Yeah, that would've been a bit much for a non-owner. The really good thing about it for me was that I did a -8 for last gameweek, and he was one of the guys I brought in. That penalty kick returned 5 points on my investment and definitely softened the -8 point blow.

    Should I do this? Aguero, Lampard to Negredo and Theo/Silva (-4) have Ramsey
    If so then Theo or Silva?

      If going Negredo up front I'd have Walcott over Silva. If no other city coverage go Silva.

    Losing aguero but need some city coverage. Should I
    (A) Get Negredo and Walcott/other mid -4 hit
    (B) Get Rooney and Silva/Yaya for -8 hit
    Thinking of going B cause I have to get rid of Koscielny anyways but will Rooney continue to drop deep?

    Aguero - Lukaku
    Shelvey - Silva
    Sess - Walcott
    Terry - Ward

    I really like the above transfers, however I'm thinking of doing the first 2 only for free to avoid a -8 hit and then the other 2 next GW for a -4? Sound idea or is it not the right decision to plan next week transfers? :/
