Scout Scribbles – Advantage Black Cats

Fabio Borini gives Sunderland a narrow lead over United in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final. Wayne Rooney misses out again with a groin problem as the champions taste defeat once more. Roberto Martinez is hopeful Leighton Baines will return for the weekend clash against Norwich, Manuel Pellegrini confirms Sergio Aguero will be back at some point this month, whilst Maarten Stekelenburg could return for Fulham this weekend:

Black Cats in the Ascendency

Sunderland have one foot in the Capital One Cup Final after heaping further misery on United with a 2-1 first leg semi-final win on Wearside last night. With John O’Shea back from injury to partner West Brown in the centre and Marcos Alonso available to make his debut, the Black Cats boss shifted Phil Bardsley to right-back – in indication, perhaps, of his first-choice back-four. Poyet rolled out a 4-3-3, with Fabio Borini and Emanuel Giacherrini on either side of Steven Fletcher, and Borini grabbed the all-important winner from the spot – crucially, this occurred when Ki Sun Yeung was on the pitch, suggesting the Italian is actually Poyet’s preferred option for spot-kick duties.

The Scout Says: Having already beaten City and Chelsea in the league and cup at the Stadium of Light under Poyet, there’s a case for saying that last night’s win over United perhaps wasn’t quite the shock many have made out to be. Given that the club have taken a single point from their last four league games in front of their fans, though, Poyet’s charges will undoubtedly be buoyed be their triumph – with home games against Southampton, Stoke, Hull, West Brom and Palace in the next 10, Fantasy managers may also be ready to take a punt on Sunderland’s main assets. Vito Mannone and Bardsley have proven particularly popular in the last week, with 20,000 and 6,000 transfers in respectively.

Another Defeat for Moyes

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie missed out yet again as United fell to a third straight defeat in all competitions last night. David Moyes fielded Ryan Giggs behind lone striker Danny Welbeck but had to rely on a headed goal from skipper Nemanja Vidic as the one crumb of consolation. Elsewhere in defence, Rafael returned following injury but Jonny Evans was subbed off after picking up a knock; further adding to the worries at the back, with reports also suggesting Rio Ferdinand may be out for two weeks with a knee problem.

The Scout Says: Rooney owners were hoping for at least a bench appearance last night as we look for a sign of his availability ahead of the weekend home clash against Swansea. His omission leaves us with a real dilemma now and judging by David Moyes’ recent press conferences, it would be somewhat surprising if he offered a definitive update on Rooney’s groin strain on Friday afternoon. Given that many Fantasy managers have already offloaded Theo Walcott, the United forward’s potential absence would prove a real headache and test the strength of numerous benches heading into the weekend, perhaps even tempting some to contemplate bringing forward their plans to wildcard… Moyes failed to mentioned Evans’ withdrawal, though it is believed to be a back knock – with Ferdinand unlikely to be fit and Phil Jones still sidelined, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic look likely to earn the nod against the Swans, depending on the Irishman’s prognosis.

Martinez Hopeful of Baines’ Weekend Availability

The Toffees boss issued an injury update in an interview with Everton TV yesterday. Martinez revealed both Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin are likely to remain sidelined for another couple of weeks with hamstring injuries before issuing an update on Leighton Baines, after the left-back missed the weekend FA Cup clash against QPR:

“Sylvain and Phil both have got probably a period of between seven and 10 days, but I would say two weeks is the most realistic time. But they are players who recover really well from these sorts of tissue injuries. They are not major problems….Leighton Baines was just a back spasm and he is recovering as we expected so I don’t think he’s going to be too far from being able to train. I would say Leighton will be back in training on Thursday. We’ll then have to assess him. Back spasms can be cleared completely or they can leave you a little bit with a lack of mobility. Any player needs to be 100% to be able to play and to be considered to play, so we’ll assess Leighton on Thursday, see how he is and take it from there.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, with all three looking imminent for a return, the Fantasy potential of John Stones or Antolin Alcaraz looks very limited. The pair are likely to deputise for perhaps two more Gameweeks (at home to Norwich and away to West Brom) with Martinez allowing his first-choice centre-halves enough time to rest and recuperate before the Merseyside derby at Anfield in Gameweek 23. Baines has been shipped in by over 28,000 FPL managers this week after racking up an 11-point haul on his first start since Gameweek 12 last time around – yesterday’s update gives his new owners cause for concern and presses pause on his bandwagon until Martinez hands us further prognosis in Thursday morning’s press conference.

Pellegrini Talks Injuries

The City boss also discussed his current injury list ahead of this evening’s Capital One Cup clash with West Ham. Pellegrini reiterated that he expects Sergio Aguero back before the month is out, whilst also revealing he plans to rotate some of the side that drew against Blackburn at the weekend in order to cope with the frantic fixture list.

“I think Sergio will be back during January – he’s working, he is training. Of course it’s very good news. Any players that are recovering from their injuries is very good news, especially an important player like Kun Aguero. It’s difficult to know [with Jovetic], but I suppose the same as Kun, during January. Of course for the player it is very bad news always for him that he cannot play because I think he is a very important player. But things happen and we must try to be optimistic for the future and suppose that Stevan will play the second part of the season…. Jesus Navas has a little problem with his knee. It’s not very important, but we are just being cautious. Richards can play, but he is not in the squad list. He must work a little more, but he is not injured and Demichelis is in the squad….I don’t know exactly how many changes we are going to make, but we are going to make some changes”

The Scout Says: The Aguero news confirms what the player and his manager have already mentioned in the past week. Unfortunately for Fantasy managers still waiting for the green light to activate their wildcards and acquire the Argentine, this could still be as late as January 29, where City roll up to Spurs on a Wednesday evening – many are still tentatively making plans until the situation becomes a little clearer. Demichelis’ return may hopefully afford us a window into Pellegrini’s thinking at the back, with some uncertainty surrounding his first-choice central defensive partner for Vincent Kompany. On the other hand, City still have six fixtures to play this month and the availability of another centre-half may afford their manager a chance to rotate more often until the schedule somewhat eases.

Stekelenburg Closing in on Cottagers Return

Rene Meulensteen is optimistic his first-choice stopper could recover from injury in time for the weekend’s crucial home clash against Sunderland.

The Scout Says: Stekelenburg has now missed the last three Gameweeks with an ankle injury, allowing David Stockdale the chance to deputise once again for the Cottagers. The latter has already stepped in for the Dutchman earlier in the season after he was sidelined with a shoulder injury but has managed just a single clean sheet in nine starts – Stekelenburg has fared almost as poorly, with a pair of shut-outs in 11 appearances indicative of Fulham’s porous backline. Given that Meulensteen’s side have conceded four to Everton and City and six to Hull in the last five Gameweeks, it’s fair to say that few will be looking to invest any time soon, despite games against Sunderland, Swansea, Southampton and West Brom in the next seven.

    RVP WC drafts?

Following on from Jonty's comment about looking at potential RVP WC drafts for later in the month in case he is back, it may me wonder what a draft like that would look like and what your opinions are on this topic.

With Suarez & Aguero basically the most 'essential' of the rest of the players and Walcott's injury dealing a blow to 'premium midfielders', would it have to be a SARvP team then?

    Example:

    Mannone, 4.0
    Kosc*, Coleman*, Ward, Chester, Burner
    Silva, Hazard, Ramsey, Puncheon**, Livermore**
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

*Could be any other mid-price/expensive mids depending on your budget.
**Could be any other rotating mids depending on your budget.

Alternatively can get rid of Silva for Lallana/Eriksen, have only the 1 premium MF and upgrade the weaker MFers or a defender and play 4-3-3 more often like this:

    Mannone, 4.0
    Coleman, Kosc, AZPI***, CLYNE****, Burner
    Hazard, Ramsey, LALLANA, Puncheon, Livermore
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

***Again could be Evans, Nasty, etc.
****Could remain Ward with one of the cheap MFers upgraded to Whittingham, Barkley, etc.

    CONCLUSION

RVP could be a huge differential come the end of the month as we have already seen him carry United last season there's not much to suggest he can't do it again. It is just a thought but I was wondering what you have to say about this following the Walcott news as well.

That's the thing. With Walcott out and Ramsey back soon, it may be quite achievable. The only question is if he is worth the money if you are more likely to captain Aguero and Suarez. Hard to say though without seeing RVP being back on form. Could well be a better option. People are quick to write people off (evident by people forgetting about Rooney due to a couple of bad GWs).

I can afford Suarez/Aguero/RVP if I have a midfield of Silva/Hazard/Ramsey/Eriksen (or Lallana)

Happy enough with that. Still allows Coleman and a 5-5.5M defender too.

I'm doing a SARvP wc team next week, and am pretty happy with mine.

Boruc Foster (still a great rotation)
      Kosc Nasty/Evans Burner Chester Ward
      Oscar Eriksen Ramsey Barkley Mutch
      Suarez Aguero RvP

Too much in defence, drop Kompany and one of Terry/Mert and Look at some of the cheap 3-way defence rotation plans to partner Terry/Mert and Coleman.

Goalkeepers worth taking a look at some of the rotation posts. Mannone/Marshall is popular.
Very heavy in defense, would downgrade (in cost terms) Terry or Kompany probably the latter.
Silva instead of Yaya, if you need a differential to the casual masses.
Punty upfront, but could pay off big time.

Chelsea seems to be tightening up. 3 cs in last 6 and 5 conceded.

Shots conceded inside the box 39 only Hull and Newcastle has conceded less.

Anyone with wildcard considering Cahill or Azpi? Can't afford to Terry. Cahill offers more goal threat but is 0.4 more than Azpi.

Another way to look at it is 1 goal conceded in the last 5 in all competitions, and we've met LFC, Arsenal and Southampton (away).

That said, not sure Cahill is nailed on now that Luiz is fit. Azpi is a decent choice for those that can't afford Terry, but he's not nailed on when Iva comes back and he doesn't offer much in terms of baps or attacking threat even if he gets to play on the left again.

It's not about Wenger deciding to buy, it's about Bayern deciding to sell. Lewandowski will be the top striker come summer, but there won't be anyone besides Mandzukic to back him up.

Would it be better to just sell Whitt for someone cheaper like Livermore, seeing as i would hardly ever play Whitt over the others?

Wildcarding For Dummies - An Idiot's Guide

    1. Remove all players from your squad on the transfer page.
    2. Select your chosen keepers - if unsure pick Boruc + Davis or Marshall + Mannone.
    3. Select your chosen two decent defenders - if unsure pick Coleman + Koscielny
    4. Fill the final three defence spots with Bardsley, Ward + Turner for an awesome threeway.
    5. Re-select Suarez - if you don't have him log off and give up.
    6. Select Aguero - ignore that red i next to his name.
    7. Go to the midfield and select Hazard, Silva and Ozil (Toure is a valid alternative to any of these three).
    8. You have 3 spots left in your team, insert a bargain basement player who probably gets two points each week (If you want to play 343 this player should be Mutch or Noone, if you want to play 352 go for Chamakh or Berahino).
    9. This is the tricky bit and may involve thinking for yourself, you need to spend the remaining value on two players who you are happy to play each week. For high value teams this may be Toure and Adebayor, for low value Lallana and Rodriguez.
    10. You're nearly there, remove Aguero as he's not a good pick yet and insert absolutely any striker of your choice from the list.
    11. Depending on how you feel about hits you may want to re-invest the Aguero money for a two week upgrade of another player - this is only advised for expert team managers.

To be fair if I was wildcarding this would be my team.

Agree, but having Suarez, Aguero, Hazard, Silva and Ozil in your team does make your team as good as it can be with the knowledge we have currently. The other players in the squad can be different but going without those 5 seems unnecessarily reckless.

Already taken a hit to get Cabaye and Walcott out....

    Current squad....

    Migs

    Clyne - Kos - Distin*

    Oscar - Hazard - Eriksen - Silva

    Suarez - Lukaku - Rooney*

    Bench - Mannone - Burner - Bannan - Chester.

With Distin out and Rooney doubtful i'm tempted to wildcard now, its either that or i grin and bare and Burner comes in for Distin with Bannan potentially coming in for Rooney.

    Which pairing is best?

    A) Gerrard, Silva

    B) RVP, Ravel/Januzaj

I feel like A is missing a forward in order to compare this. I'd be partial to A either way since RVP isn't 100% yet.

Yes..Three big mids in Ozil, Silva and Hazard with two totally nailed high points earners in Cabaye and Lallana....Ade Rooney Suarez up front..obviously Rooney to Aguero after WC..

if you bought him expensive, then you have every reason to ditch him otherwise u will lose on his price
in my case i bought him for 6.5 and now he is at 7.1
so he stays until further notice

            I think I'll get both. Here's how she's looking:

            Mannone - K.Davis
            Kosc - Coleman - Nasty - Azpil - Ward
            Özil-Gerrard-Silva-Hazard-Colback
            Suarez - Negredo - J.Rod

Very template but with a twist of four big defenders in a five-way with Ward. A bit scared of Mannone Alone but I think I'll just address that further down the line. Also sad about dropping Bony but J.Rod looks like outrageous value.

I like it. I like that you've followed through with the whole 'big teams tighten up after Christmas theory' I'm hoping to do the same but I haven't hit the button yet so I don't know what I can afford.

Any cash in the bank? Are you planning on getting Aguero when he's fit or riding it out with Negredo?

Yep, I'm all in on that, especially with the extra baps for defenders (shame only two of them are CBs). It's only really possible with Nasty and Azpil being the prices they are. If Azpil loses out to Ivan & Cashley then I might drop back to Debuchy. Newcastle are a big team, right? 😉

And yes, enough for Negredo > Aguero (plus 0.1 for a Negredo drop)

I'm sure I could come up with a definition of 'big' which fits if required 🙂

Looks like you've got the bases covered - no logical reason why that team shouldn't flourish!

Had Coleman since start so definetely keeping, but looking at his fixtures, I feel temptation to bench him few times in the future.

He has gw23 liv, gw25 tot, gw27 che

Possible alternatives for my team to play in those games could be

    Ward HUL, WBA, MUN
    Clyne ARS, STO, whm
    Chester cpl, sun, car

Ward looks good for 23 and 25, who knows maybe even 27.
Would you play him instead of Coleman in those fixtures?

Chester would save 0.2, but I think I wouldn't play him in those awaygames instead of Coleman.
    Toughts?
