The Weekend Team News

Olivier Giroud is back for Arsenal, though Aaron Ramsey fails to recover in time for the trip to Villa. Everton will assess three key defenders for Norwich’s visit, though Ross Barkley emerges as a doubt. Southampton could welcome back Artur Boruc for a home clash with West Brom. Liverpool’s Daniel Agger may be out for a month, Jonathan De Guzman and Dwight Tiendalli are sidelined for Swansea’s trip to United, whilst Norwich have mixed news on the injury front:

Arsene Wenger confirmed Aaron Ramsey is still sidelined for the trip to Villa, though Kieran Gibbs has “a little chance” of returning. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is available after a five-month spell on the sidelines – the winger played 45 minutes for the reserves last night and his manager admitted he “wouldn’t have any hesitation” of playing him against the midlands outfit. Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are back in training and available, though Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss out after coming off against Spurs last weekend with a knee problem.

Roberto Martinez will check over the fitness of a quartet of players ahead of the visit of Norwich. Ross Barkley is a doubt after picking up a toe problem in the FA cup win over QPR. In defence, Leighton Baines was missing against QPR due to a back spasm but Martinez expects the left-back to recover, whilst Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka “are close to making Saturday, but also on the verge of missing” after recent hamstring problems.

Southampton have been boosted by the possible return of Artur Boruc after a hand injury for the visit of West Brom. In his pre-match press conference, Mauricio Pochettino would only say the Polish stopper “may or may not play” this weekend. The Saints boss also revealed that Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez are “recovering well” and will be assessed going into the clash against West Brom, after the pair were forced off in the cup last weekend.

Michael Laudrup will be without the services of Jonathan de Guzman (calf) and Dwight Tiendalli (hamstring) for Swansea’s trip to Old Trafford. Pablo Hernandez and Roland Lamah are also “two to three weeks” away from a return for the Welsh outfit.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton has confirmed Seb Bassong, Wes Hoolahan and Bradley Johnson are all fit for the encounter with Everton, after the trio missed the FA Cup tie with Fulham last weekend, Meanwhile, Michael Turner and Jonny Howson remain out with hamstring and back injuries respectively. Hughton also revealed Anthony Pilkington and Alex Tettey have returned to light training, and could be pushing for a recall ahead of Hull’s visit to Carrow Road later this month.

Liverpool have suffered a fresh blow in defence with Daniel Agger reportedly out for four weeks with a calf strain. The Danish international limped off in the closing stages of the FA Cup win over Oldham and has since revealed the extent of his injury to the Danish press.

Hull defender Paul McShane is sidelined for three to four weeks with an ankle injury. Sone Aluko (Achilles) and Robbie Brady (groin) are on course for a return at the end of January or early February.

Reports suggest Robin van Persie has returned to training for United but is expected to miss out again this weekend. We await David Moyes’ press conference at 2pm for an official update, however.

The Newcastle press suggest Yohan Cabaye has returned to the club’s training base and will be assessed today as he attempts to overcome an Achilles injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

I think all of them are nailed on unless MCI buy a central defender this window. If they did that Nasty would be dropped.

The only defender that seems to get rotated in the league is Kolarov/Clichy.

All of them are good options and have good fixtures, so just go with your gut. My gut tells me that Giroud is about to go on a run as he scored in his last outing against Newcastle so should have his confidence back.

Any glaring errors? I have poor TV hence the team is less glamour than some I have seen on here!

    Szczesny Mannone
    Coleman Evans Chester Ward Bardsley
    Silva Hazard Gerrard Januzaj Whittingham
    Suarez Negredo JRodriguez

Then in a couple of weeks I can do Silva Negs > Ramsey Aguero

I paid £6m for him just before he scored away at swansea. I'd say that's the maximum I'd want to pay for him but if he continues his scoring rate he's worth 6.6/6.7. Not fancy baines for an extra 0.5?

I agree, a defender with higher PPG than Walcott, Oscar or Gerrard and who has scored 5 points less than £11.9m Aguero this season.
£6.7m is a ridiculous price to pay.

A selection of midfielders who have scored better than Barkley (5.3) since GW4:

    Gareth Barry (5.3)

I know they are not fashionable choices so I think most people are overlooking the stats as you do not see many people including them in their team.

Gone Lukaku and Adebayor. Will probably ditch Ade for him. Either way i will have enough money in the bank - millions(!) - to do it in any given GW. Us early wildcarders get the team we want earlier than those who wait and can still get Aguero when we want too.

      Win/win in my view.

I think it would be a mistake for early WC not to have their Aguero plan in place so he can be brought in instantly when fit.

I had mine in place for next week but Walcott injury has hampered it and now need to take an 8 point hit if I get him next week.

As Negredo will be the one making way for him in my team, I think I'll wait until Kun has started at least one game before bringing him back. Would hate to do Negredo > Kun before CAR, and then see Neg get 60M+ and Kun half an hour off the bench. Not really worried about missing out on any massive returns against tot/CHE.

I think Özil. I tried to convince myself that he wouldn't be worth it and tried investigating his returns with and without Wally. Rather small sample size with Wally but quite a noticeable effect - 7ppg without and 4ppg with.

People shouldn't nessesarly think it's a no no to have a Goalkeeper from the same team as one of your Defenders.

Say you, like most on here, will be playing 2 defenders each week and rotating the other 3. The chances that your other two Defenders or your other Keeper don't have a good fixture to allow you not to have to double up when you are playing one of will be low.

I've gone through my rotation with two Sunderland (Boruc, Mannone, Bardsley, Gabbidon & Chester)and whenever they have the best fixture one of my other 3 have nearly as good a fixture to save the need to double up.

If you do find a rotation without double ups great but I wouldn't let it scare you if not, especially as much as it seems to some people on here.

      It's much simpler than that.

If you think your GK has a good fixture then your DEF must have a good fixture too.

        Exactly.

Everyone is buying Manonne for his "brilliant" home games.

I'm saying to all the Manonne owners - "Grow some balls"

        Get Bardsley.

Yes but doubling up in your 15 and doubling up in your starting 11 is another matter completely imo.

If your ahead in your mini league why take those risks, probably better to spread the risk. If your behind I'd say your more inclined to risk the starting 11 double up.

          What risk?

Like Christina says, if you think Mannone has good fixtures and make him your only playing keeper, the same goes for your defenders.

Why would I want to double up in my 15, and then not play those players in my starting 11.

Would be silly seeing a CS on my bench every week.

      +1

Two seasons ago I double up on Vorm/taylor and Krul/williamson when they were still cheap. It was brilliant as they rotated Home/away. I was sruprised no one caught on.

You're entirely free to do so.

I was just commenting that it's a dodgy way to choose players.

You've obviously narrowed it down to two options based on something you then rely on random posters with differing knowledge to rush you to 5.

And you probably won't take their advice anyway if it doesn't match with your thoughts.

Maybe Negredo. Giroud or Lukaku the best shouts though i would say. If JRod goes on a great run of form (the fixtures are certainly there) then he can just come in for Adebayor.

I'm planning to activate my wildcard saturday 11.31 and this is the team i am looking at. 0.0bank.

    Boruc Davis
    Azpillicueta Koscielny Coleman Chester Ward
    Silva Hazard Eriksen Ramsey Mutch
    Aguero Suarez Giroud

My only concern is Wenger's latest comments about the potential of podolski playing centrally - obviously this may affect Girouds time?

Hello all, had to play my WC due to ever growing injury list. Have ended up with this -

    Mignolet, Davis

    Mert-Kos-Coleman (mcnaughton, chester)

Yaya, Ozil, Silva, Hazard (cabaye on bench)

    Jrod, Ade, Suarez

Thoughts? Would you transfer out Silva/Cabaye for Lallana/Gerrard?

    Mignolet Davis
    Clyne Coleman Mertesacker Turner Evans
    Walcott Hazard Lallana Cabaye Januzaj
    Rooney Suarez Lukaku

0.5million in bank, 2 FTs. Thinking I might use my WC now, or is it worth it? Who to get in for Walcott for 9.8m, was thinking Silva.

    Mannone
    Coleman, Mertesacker, Evra
    Silva, Ozil, Hazard, Januzaj
    Suarez, Lukaku, Rooney

    Lewis, Whittingham, Ward, Chester
    1FT and 0,1mITB

Would you play Whittingham or Januzaj?
Would you use the FT? (looking at Evra to Clyne/Kolarov)

    Mannone
    Skrtel Kosc Coleman
    Ozil Silva hazard Lallana
    Ade Suarez lakuku
    (Davis Januzaj Chester Whittaker)

Lallana and one of forwards out for Aguero

Little worried about weak bench, goalkeeper, no YaYa. and no Roone but you have to make choices I suppose
