The Weekend Team News

Olivier Giroud is back for Arsenal, though Aaron Ramsey fails to recover in time for the trip to Villa. Everton will assess three key defenders for Norwich’s visit, though Ross Barkley emerges as a doubt. Southampton could welcome back Artur Boruc for a home clash with West Brom. Liverpool’s Daniel Agger may be out for a month, Jonathan De Guzman and Dwight Tiendalli are sidelined for Swansea’s trip to United, whilst Norwich have mixed news on the injury front:

Arsene Wenger confirmed Aaron Ramsey is still sidelined for the trip to Villa, though Kieran Gibbs has “a little chance” of returning. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is available after a five-month spell on the sidelines – the winger played 45 minutes for the reserves last night and his manager admitted he “wouldn’t have any hesitation” of playing him against the midlands outfit. Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are back in training and available, though Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss out after coming off against Spurs last weekend with a knee problem.

Roberto Martinez will check over the fitness of a quartet of players ahead of the visit of Norwich. Ross Barkley is a doubt after picking up a toe problem in the FA cup win over QPR. In defence, Leighton Baines was missing against QPR due to a back spasm but Martinez expects the left-back to recover, whilst Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka “are close to making Saturday, but also on the verge of missing” after recent hamstring problems.

Southampton have been boosted by the possible return of Artur Boruc after a hand injury for the visit of West Brom. In his pre-match press conference, Mauricio Pochettino would only say the Polish stopper “may or may not play” this weekend. The Saints boss also revealed that Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez are “recovering well” and will be assessed going into the clash against West Brom, after the pair were forced off in the cup last weekend.

Michael Laudrup will be without the services of Jonathan de Guzman (calf) and Dwight Tiendalli (hamstring) for Swansea’s trip to Old Trafford. Pablo Hernandez and Roland Lamah are also “two to three weeks” away from a return for the Welsh outfit.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton has confirmed Seb Bassong, Wes Hoolahan and Bradley Johnson are all fit for the encounter with Everton, after the trio missed the FA Cup tie with Fulham last weekend, Meanwhile, Michael Turner and Jonny Howson remain out with hamstring and back injuries respectively. Hughton also revealed Anthony Pilkington and Alex Tettey have returned to light training, and could be pushing for a recall ahead of Hull’s visit to Carrow Road later this month.

Liverpool have suffered a fresh blow in defence with Daniel Agger reportedly out for four weeks with a calf strain. The Danish international limped off in the closing stages of the FA Cup win over Oldham and has since revealed the extent of his injury to the Danish press.

Hull defender Paul McShane is sidelined for three to four weeks with an ankle injury. Sone Aluko (Achilles) and Robbie Brady (groin) are on course for a return at the end of January or early February.

Reports suggest Robin van Persie has returned to training for United but is expected to miss out again this weekend. We await David Moyes’ press conference at 2pm for an official update, however.

The Newcastle press suggest Yohan Cabaye has returned to the club’s training base and will be assessed today as he attempts to overcome an Achilles injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

I was just making reference to your term "shut out". It is an Ice Hockey term. So I referenced a goalkeeper as a goaltender 🙂

Hi guys, long time admirer, first time poster

My question relates to Marshall or Boruc? I have Mannone also

I know the Vito/Marshall rotation has been much talked about, but for the same price is Boruc not the better shout? Saints were much better with him at the back, they've got good fixtures.

I guess it comes down to talent vs. fixtures an I'm pretty stuck

I like the Boruc option as you can get Burner to cover Cardiff's good fixtures (assuming he doesn't drop out for Hudson). Not sure how well Boruc rotates with Mannone though.

        Thanks!

Sunderland and Southampton are on the same home and away schedule which is a deterrent, but they generally have one good fixture a week. Cardiff are hemorrhaging goals already and most would agree that Malkay was a defensive orientated manager

Boruc Mannone is a good pairing. Not quite the perfect rotation of Marshall/Mannone but it covers the really bad fixtures at least, and Southampton should find that defensive vigour again, especially once Wanyama returns to lock down the midfield.

What have you got to lose/

Only thing with these Jan signings is that they can be explosive in the beginning (when they're on your bench out of fear of the unknown) then do nothing when you actually play them.

I'm 99% sure Magnus will come in at 5.0. He's a quality player he is. Saw signs of it when he played for our reserve team. Plus OGS's been bigging him up as his QB and set piece taker and what not.

But @4.5. Im throwing him straight in too.

From the reports I've read about him I think he's going to be a great player for us, but will be one of those frustrating fantasy prospects who tends to assist the assister. For the last couple of years though we've had a jan cheapie that's done really well (Coutinho last year and Siggs the year before) do hopefully he could be another prospect

As I've still got my first WC left, I thought I'd burn my January one early. Rate my WC team?

    Migs - Kelvin Davis
    Coleman - Merte - Terry - Whittaker - Chester
    Morrison - Oscar - Wilshere - Silva - Januzaj
    Rooney - Rodriguez - Suarez (c)

Leave me with enough spare funds to do Rooney -> Aguero next week.

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster. My TV isn't great, so WC team at the minute is:

    Foster - Davis

    Kosc - Nastasic - Clyne - Ward - Chester

    Silva - Hazard - Ozil - Oscar - Bannan

    Jrod - Suarez - Lukaku

This leaves enough in the bank to do ozil to ramsey and lukaku to kun, when he's back.

I'd prefer bony over jrod but this would require an extra transfer to get kun back in.

    Any suggestions?

Also, is the paid membership worth it? Thanks.

In the long term he is but at the moment Chambers is starting and has been performing well. That's not to say Clyne will not start this GW, it's to say that he MAY not start and that could easily mean a 1 point cameo.

I'm a Saints fan and I reckon he's first choice. Looking at his stats and taking his FA Cup start into account, Pochettino was easing him in. We look stronger with him playing and Pochettino is very cautious about over-playing our really young players for fear of burn out.

Starting to get nervous that I'm going to want to keep Negredo and double-up with Aguero (instead of swapping). I don't want to paint myself into a WC corner and build a squad that needs three transfers to do it.

    Decisions, decisions.

Lallana is more rotation free... Eriksen under new manager also may be rotation free if he can keep up his form...

Eriksen is as nailed on as they come. The only creative midfielder at Tottenham at the moment and he is playing well.

Newcastle seem to have problems at the back , leaving Negs out sounds like a bad idea now ...

He hasn't exactly done it against other opposition in the league so I wouldn't be too worried by his cup performance

I find it hard that Demichelis could benefit from this but here is the article anyway

Nasti could benefit as Demichelis is his main rival for the second CB spot

Would go for Lukaku, for this week at least, since you already have Lallana.

Lucas should never be in any team, like the Giroud punt... and i'd get rid of one Chelsea mid for a City one

Ah, I thought Lucas was a good call, but I guess there's a reason a Liv mid would be 4.3. Why don't you like Lucas? And I need some Mcity in my team, but with Toure and Silva being so expensive it's a tough call.

Lucas never gets any fpl points. If that's all you have you could try Gnabry if you get rid f another Arsenal player.

Haz and Oscar are just as expensive as the city ones roughly...

Been messing all week, but have tinkered for the final time.

    Marshall
    Coleman, Kompany, Koscielny
    Silva, Gerard, Hazard, Ozil,
Jrod, Suarez, Rooney (with Aguero upgrade money)

Just looks like every other WC team...very annoying.
